120: Luis Benitez: Professional Mountain Guide has balanced his life between two countries, Ecuador and the United States, and between mountaineering and being of service to military veterans. Luis Benitez  Host Mark Pattison sums up his new guest Luis Benitez with the quote: “The only thing that isn’t ok is to quit trying.” Luis Benitez grew up in Ecuador and the United States with asthma. But that breathing complication didn’t prevent him from going up the famous Cotopaxi mountain, the second highest summit in Ecuador, which reaches a height of over 19,000 feet: “Spending time in altitude really helps your lungs get stronger. The air is thinner, cleaner, and it forces you to breathe hard.”   On this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, we talk with Luis Benitez, Professional Mountain Guide in Colorado, who takes his role in mountaineering seriously: “You got to put in the work. The thing I love about mountaineering is that it doesn’t matter how big of a check you write to work with a guide in some remote corner of the world, if you are not prepared, and if you haven’t put in the work, it is going to be the biggest waste of money you have ever put on the table. I think one of the things that is so rewarding about mountaineering is, you can’t fake it.”   What You Will Learn:   The love of the great outdoors and mountaineering itself began at a young age. It was also connected to his fight against the restrictions of asthma: “The higher we would go, the calmer it would make me. Because those were the things that really kept my breathing in check and kept me calm during an asthma attack as a kid...When I really started getting into mountaineering, it think it was like any other professional athlete that really finds that passion at a young age. It is all consuming. You sleep it, eat it, drink it, live it.”    Luis Benitez lives up to his own quote: “Challenge yourself and change your world.” But what was it in his life that was the driver behind this message? Luis discusses the importance of human evolution, the need to challenge ourselves to exceed our perceived limitations. “The more advanced we are from a technology standpoint, the more complacent we are with stepping out of our mental and physical comfort zones. It is one of those unique things where technology has brought us so much and has helped so much. But then there is still this thing of human vs. nature.”   Luis talks about examples of going beyond his limits by talking about his first time on Mount Everest, a mountain he has now been on seven times, with the first blind man to climb it, Erik Weihenmayer. “It was the experience of a lifetime for sure. Thank God for all of us. We said a quiet prayer everyday that, Erik was and is an incredibly capable teammate. So he is not somebody who showed up and expected to be dragged somewhere. He was a very competent and safe climber. Which, we never would have been able to get it done without his level skill.”    Luis Benitez gets into what it has been like becoming a professional mountain guide who was a part of Adventure Consultants, founded by Rob Hall Into Thin Air who passed away on the top of Mount. Everest. Luis met the successor of the company, Guy Cotter, as well. Into Thin Air is the 1997 bestselling non-fiction book written by Jon Krakauer that covers the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, in which eight climbers were killed on an expedition led by guide Rob Hall.   Luis Benitez has done the seven summits 32 times. What was the most challenging mountain out of all of them? Find out when he shares it along with picking his hardest trip. He also talks about how no one summited in 2010. “What can makes a mountain challenging varies. The terrain can be great but the team can be awful, and vice-versa.”    Consulting and Green Space   Learn about how the consulting side of mountaineering has been like for Luis Benitez, along with his interest in politics and economic development:  “I have been lucky enough to grow up within the outdoor industry. I was an outward bound instructor starting when I was 19. My American grandfather owed a sporting goods store. I got into mountaineering in high school, and later on in life, which became my professional career. As you know when you are a guide, you have to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer, priest, rabbi, politician all rolled into one.”  Find out how green space can impact are health and daily lives: “Green space does something to your chemical makeup. In your brain and in your body. There is actually direct causality and health benefits to spending time outside. To the point where doctors now in four countries and in three states are legally allowed to prescribe time outside instead of prescribing a course of medication.”     Warriors to Summits    Luis Benitez talks about starting his non profit organization Warriors to Summits: “We wanted to help create an organization that not only gave back to the veteran community, but do it in our own way. This wasn’t just about sitting under a tree and trying to reconnect with nature and heal a little. This was about going out and stepping out of your comfort zone.” Don’t miss a moment of mountaineering passion with this episode of the Finding Your Summit Podcast with guest Luis Benitez. BGBS Episode 014: Sometimes Your Path Chooses YouOver the course of a decade, Luis Benitez has quietly emerged amongst a growing field of climbers as one of the more experienced, respected and busiest professional guides and leadership development consultants in the world. Throughout his career, Luis has summited the top of the famed “Seven Summits” a cumulative 32 times, including being a six-time summiteer of Mt. Everest. Between managing expeditions on some of the most remote peaks in the world, while consulting with a deep and varied group of clientele, Benitez works to tie the lessons available from the outdoors and carry them back to the everyday challenges of life and business during his keynote presentations and seminars. In this episode we talked about: What Luis' current title Director of the Outdoor Recreation Industry Office for the State of Colorado means and the kind of difficulties he faces. Some of the early ambitions Luis had growing up. What life was like for Luis growing up in Ecuador and the history of his family and where he got his outdoor and mountaineering experience from. How Luis became instantly inspired to be a mountaineer from reading about Jim Whittaker, who “had what I have (Asthma).” What steps Luis took to become a mountain guide as he inspired to be. What it's like to be a mountain guide and what type of hierarchies are involved. Luis expedition to Cho Oyu in Tibet and the horrifying experience that occurred going through the pass from Nepal to Dharamsala India. The involvement Luis got into with the incident he had seen going on his expedition. Luis experience meeting the Dalai Lama, what conversations they had, and how his message to a certain group of refuges changed the perception of Luis' life and how he had applied it to his community. What lead Luis getting into politics and being elected to serve as Town Council in Eagle, Colorado. The call with John Hickenlooper and him hiring Luis to be the first director of the Outdoor Recreation Industry Office. Luis' take on the leadership of the country today, especially on how it influences the outdoor economy. Quotes: [13:58] “I remember dragging that magazine into my parents' bedroom, pointing at Jim Whittaker saying, “This guy has what I have. This is exactly what I want to do. Dave, Jeff and Erik welcomed Luis to the No Barriers Podcast studio and it felt initially like a trip down memory lane. Jeff and Erik have known Luis since they were all young mountain climbers in their late 20’s. They have made films, went on great expeditions and shared countless experiences. Since those days all three have been on different trajectories all while still maintaining a connection to the outdoors where it all started. When Luis is asked if he expected to have gone from climbing to being in the world of business and politics he is adamant he never saw this path for himself. In 2001 the team that would eventually summit Everest together and make history as the team that included the first blind person, Erik Weihenmayer, to ever reach the top. They were brought together, along with our Technical producer and expedition photographer, Didrik Johnck, by their team leader, Pasquale (PV) Scaturro. Luis talks about how people viewed this decision to take a blind guy up Everest as a “career-killer.” They assumed he wouldn’t make it and he’d be known as the guide who was responsible for his death. We know how this turned out though. “We weren’t just going to climb Everest, we were going to shatter that belief in what we could actually get done.” When Luis was young he actually was not athletic and was in fact, quite sickly. With severe asthma and allergies he was confined to his house for most of his childhood and led a sedentary lifestyle. He lobbied his dad successfully to take him to Ecuador where he could acclimatize his lungs in the high altitude and help them heal - as he had read in an article about a successful mountaineer who had similar issues. Luis recalls one of his first meetings with Erik before they climbed Everest on a local ice climbing day in Colorado where he overheard the film crew talking badly of Erik and his abilities and it just reminded him of being a young sickly kid who was also counted out. “It was at that moment that I knew what we were about to do had very little to do with just climbing and a whole lot to do with breaking that perceived barrier of what you were capable of.” After Everest was such a success Luis become high in demand. He remained committed to his goal of being a mountain guide and helping others reach their potential. He loved the concept of a Rope Team on a mountain. For him expeditions are not just resume builders. “For me it wasn’t about returning to Everest or going on these big expeditions but helping other people understand what they were capable of.” Our hosts reflect that wanting to guide and lead requires a special mentality and being of service. Luis ultimately translated his love of the climbing communities and his desire to recreate that special energy their Everest team had into becoming a professional guide. When asked about his best moment in his guiding profession Luis surprises the hosts by saying it was their “failed” attempt at Ama Dablam when they were training for Mt. Everest. As a young, hard-charging team it was hard to let go of ego and make the tough decision to turn around when they realized that weather would make it impossible to summit. It’s moments like these that have informed Luis’ sense of right v. wrong on mountains and valuing real human lives over perceived triumphs. “To make the decision to turn around because of objective hazard when we knew how that would translate and the hardship that would result….being a part of the process to pull the plug...with all that pressure and all that was on the line, to turn around - it didn’t matter, reputation doesn’t matter - I don’t work for you, I work for your family and will not make that phone call home.” As for the low point in his career it was a defining moment in 2006 on Mount Cho Oyu that changed the course of his life. Luis witnessed what he describes as a crime against humanity and ultimately had to make a hard decision to be truthful and let the world know what he witnessed, even if it cost him his professional goals. But, from a lost job and even lost friendships, Luis found a new path in the adversity. He is now the first State Director of the Outdoor Recreation Industry office for Colorado. His office is responsible for over 5,000 CO jobs and they work with other governors to not just act as “tree-hugging hippies,” but to bring awareness that this industry makes significant impact to the USA’s GDP and our economy. It seems like Luis has come full circle by doing work that matters and gives voice to the outdoor community. “I wouldn’t be ready for this position if all of this hadn’t happened in my life.” Each experience Luis has had has been a catalyst to a future experience that brings him closer to his mission. Turns out the Dalai Lama was right: ‘You don’t always choose your own path - the path chooses you.’

My American grandfather, dad's from Ecuador mom's from the United States, my American grandfather owned a sporting goods store. A small specialty fly fishing bird hunting shop that was literally right down the road from my grade school. You know those pictures that you see from the olden days, I would walk a quarter mile down the road my grandfather's shop every day on ice before school and my parents he liked to pick me up after they got off of work. What I really learned at a very young age other than just specialty family-owned retail was that these places in these spaces were really convening spots for folks to talk about things that they loved the most. My grandfather had the normal core customers but those core customers loved spending time in the shop to talk about fishing, hunting, hiking, and boating. He was one of the original Orvis dealerships so if you know anything about fly-fishing that was a fairly significant brand back in those days. So to hang out with some of his old cronies at a really early age and realized that all these folks love talking about policy and access and conservation and stewardship, that was my start. Things we talked about Outward Bound Warriors to Summits Trekking for kids Colorado Outdoor Office of Recreation: Economic Development, Conservation and Stewardship, Education and Workforce Training, Public Health and Wellness Outdoor Research- Dan Nordstrom Camber Outdoor Job Board Advice, tips I think it's on all of us as leaders within the industry to make sure people know what's out there. Number one a lot of people younger folks that I talk to think a lot of these jobs it's kind of a wizard behind the curtain. I'd love to be a ski or snowboard shaper but I don't know, do I just call a ski company and ask them? I mean I think that's been the journey up to this point you used to have to hack your way in. I think what the responsibilities of officers like mine and I talk to a lot of my counterparts is that we need to educate everybody about how deep and wide our ecosystem is. So if you have a searchable database that has every outdoor company and nonprofit listed, which we have in Colorado and it's constantly being built bigger and bigger. A young student can go in to be like okay I got a list of fifteen different ski companies. Much like folks wanting to start out their career, they know what their landscape looks like in the backyard. With a little bit of knowledge and then access to some senior level folks, you know you got to get out there. Invite CEOs,  not to a closed-door session where you know the general population can't attend but open door sessions where anybody that wants to comment is interested can do a little networking, professionally exchange emails and ideas. We are really working hard to create that ecosystem here so people feel like A they understand that it's an inclusive environment and economy and B they can start to define what a career path could or should look like. Today’s episode of the Take Me Outdoors podcast features Luis Benitez, Colorado’s Director of the Office of Outdoor Recreation Industry, and Jon Snyder, Washington’s Outdoor Recreation and Economic Policy Advisor to the Governor, on the topic of growing the number of states that are standing up the Office of Outdoor Recreation. For the third year in a row, the SHIFT Festival will provide a platform for action and the building of best practices around this all-important office -- one that ties together the impact of outdoor recreation, the growth of it as an economic driver and the importance of conservation. This year’s workshop is a critical part of the SHIFT Festival’s theme: The Business Case for Public Lands. SHIFT’s 2017 Festival takes place November 1-3 in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and this year’s panel takes place on Nov. 1 from 8 a.m. to Noon, at  the Snow King Resort, the epicenter of the action for the Festival this year. This year’s panel will be led by Cailin O’Brien-Feeney with the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA), who has contributed a great deal of leadership and support to the formation of the growth of this office. Rachel VandeVoort, the newest leader in the group for the State of Montana, will also be in attendance, as will Brad Peterson, who was the very first leader appointed in this role for the State of Utah. Full details can be found here. This episode of the Take Me Outdoors podcast offers a fantastic opportunity to go deeper with two active leaders in this role, Luis Benitez of the State of Colorado, and Jon Snyder, of the State of Washington. Both share their respective state’s vision and goals around this mission-critical office, as well as what the commonalities are for the growth of this office nationwide. The episode is broken up into two interviews, the first features Luis Benetiz. Luis stepped into his role as Director for the Office of Outdoor Recreation Industry July 1, 2015, and he’s started his third year in the post and is the State of Colorado’s first Director for the Office of Outdoor Recreation Industry. He brings years of experience as a leader with Outward Bound, Fortune 200 and 500 consulting and multiple summits of Mt. Everest to the role. He also served as a Town Council Member for the City of Eagle, Colo., prior to joining Governor Hickenlooper’s team at the State of Colorado. Jon Snyder, who serves as the State of Washington Governor Jay Inslee’s Policy Advisor for Outdoor Recreation and Economic Development, also joins us in this podcast. Jon’s role coordinates policy, legislation, budget items, and outreach related to outdoor recreation. He was appointed in December 2015 after serving on the Spokane City Council for six years and owning a regional outdoor magazine for nine years. Snyder served on the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, Spokane Transit Authority, and Spokane Regional Health District as well as having a leadership role in passing local ballot measures to fund parks, streets, libraries, and public transportation. Luis and Jon give us great insights into the catalyzing effects that SHIFT has brought to the growth of this State leadership post. The podcast covers a lot - including the importance of this role to bring together a fragmented outdoor recreation economy and conservation movement and the importance of doing so to protect America’s public lands. Download this episode today to get an insider’s view of the State Office of Outdoor Recreation and Industry, and to learn more about Luis and Jon’ missions and goals. By Summer, 2018, it’s estimated that up to 10 offices will be in place in states across America. This year’s SHIFT Festival will again serve as a bellweather for the future impact of this office - please join us to learn more about it in this podcast, and at the 2017 SHIFT Festival!

“It’s an interesting time for outdoor recreation - we were called the sleeping giant just a few years ago. The giant is now awake!” - Jessica Wahl While it’s easy to be overwhelmed with all of the uncertainties in our turbulent political climate, this week’s guest brings some light to all of the positive things that are in motion that affect our lands and industry. I sat down with Jessica Wahl, the Government Affairs Manager at the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) who’s on the front lines in DC making a difference at the policy level. Jessica fell in love with the outdoors when she saw how it changed lives and improved communities through her previous work with the Office of the Secretary on external affairs and youth engagement in the outdoors. Jessica got to work closely with companies like Patagonia, KEEN and The North Face, so joining the ranks at OIA seemed like the perfect next step for her. When Jessica first came to OIA, more of her focus was on conservation but recently that focus has widened to anything and everything that gets people outside. The lines are blurring  between the traditional “man powered” outdoor industry and opening up to the whole supply chain including motor powered recreationists, hunters and more. When we all join arms and speak up together, our voices become louder. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I do! GIVEAWAY: Verde and OIA partner KEEN are giving one lucky listener a pair of Durand Polar Shell boots! Bulletpoints: OIA was founded in 1989 by visionary outdoor industry leaders who realized that “outdoor” could be much more than a passing consumer trend. Today, OIA is the leading trade association and voice of the outdoor recreation industry. The Recreations Economic Contributions Act (REC Act) has been signed by President Obama, ensuring that the outdoor recreation economy, including outdoor industry jobs and our economic impact, are measured by the federal government and accounted for as part of the national Gross Domestic Product. Using the momentum from the REC Act, OIA is educating new members of congress and other admin on the importance of this Act and how it touches every district and state. It would be a huge benefit to appoint a Director of Outdoor Recreation, like Luis Benitez, in every state’s governor’s office. With these positions in place, each state can have a point person to take charge with land issues and to look out for outdoor business and recreation. In 2017 OIA wants to make sure there aren’t many rollbacks in recreation assets, public lands and climate policy. The much talked about Infrastructure and Transportation package should benefit trails, protected bike lanes, public lands, roads and bridges in parks. The National Park Service Centennial Act (H.R. 4680) addresses the $12 billion in needed repairs to park infrastructure, such as unmaintained trails and deteriorating buildings and structures that are in danger of falling apart. President-elect Trump does see value in the outdoor recreation economy and the jobs it creates. His pick for Interior Secretary, Cathy McMorris Rogers, was one of the original co-sponsor for the REC Act and helped push it through. Land management is critical and important. There are places to develop and places to leave in their natural state. Having those conversations at the local level is essential to overall success. We must work to keep our lands federally managed as it’s the #1 threat to outdoor recreation at this point. How can you help? Support your local specialty retailers! Buy gear and buy local. Get involved in your outdoor community and conservation efforts. “It has less to do with political party, and much more to do with conversation around how to take care of it, how to grow it, and how you focus on the next generation of leadership.” - Luis Benitez Luis Benitez is the state of Colorado’s first director of the newly created office of the Colorado Outdoor Recreation Industry, which was created mid year 2015. We had an important milestone sneak in, close to the very last day of November of 2016. The US Senate passed HR 4665 the Outdoor Rec Act. This bill will instruct the department of Commerce in Federal Land Agencies to provide statistics on how the outdoor industry, including bicycling, and many other disciplines we all love, how they contribute to the US economy. Luis Benitez joins us today to discuss the future and impact of this bill, and how you can become involved with all the interesting and amazing things that are coming out of this bill being hopefully passed. House passed it earlier this year, the Senate just passed it November 29th, 2016, and the legislation is now headed to President Obama’s desk. We are hoping it will be signed by President Obama before he leaves office. Bulletpoints This Outdoor Rec Act encourage the government to fully measure, recognize, and enhance the economic benefits of outdoor recreation to communities, businesses, and our nation This bill could help us build jobs, innovation, and help with conservation What the bill aims to do is count all outdoor industry jobs and revenue towards the GDP We’re still counted right now, but in a very fractured way If the bill is passed, it could show that outdoor industry jobs are worth more than the automotive and pharmaceutical industry combined For the first time there is a heightened awareness that we all need to take care of what we love, and how that is measured and counted Each state has their own definition of economic development in the Outdoor industry We’re not sure what the standpoints of president Trump will be on these policies The shift conference is a conference that is completely focused on conservation and stewardship The CPW adopted the “shift” principle Links Luis Benitez’s Twitter: twitter.com/endeavorconsult Luis Benitez's Website: LuisBenitez.info H.R.4665 Summary: Congress.gov/bill/114th-congress/house-bill/4665 Conservation Alliance: Bicycleretailer.com

There are a LOT of values-based and mission-driven companies in the outdoor, snowsports, endurance, cycling, health and wellness, fitness and travel markets. Being able to use our companies as vehicles for positive change is one of the biggest reasons we choose to launch businesses in these markets. But launching is one thing. Growing is quite another. In fact, I'd venture to say that nothing makes founders recoil faster than making the association between accessing capital for growth and compromising their values. As values-based business owners we've got a clear vision around how we want to make an impact with our companies. And going forward, that will stay in tact through the funding cycle if Alissa Sears has anything to say about it. Alissa, along with Ted Ning, a leader in the Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability (LOHAS) marketplace and Luis Benitez, founder of Endeavor Consulting and also the newly-appointed director of the Outdoor Recreation Industry Office for the State of Colorado, launched the AdVenturesAcademy. The organization's goal is to “harness the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship to revolutionize how to grow truly great, resilient companies committed to building a better world.” Alissa is my guest today on the Intrepid Entrepreneur podcast. We talk about the inception and growth of AdventuresAcademy as a vehicle to evolve venture capital to work more effectively with mission-driven businesses. With the advent of the sharing economy, peer-to-peer reviews and the Internet effectively providing a higher level of transparency than ever before, mission-driven companies are growing quickly. In fact, Alissa points to the growth needs of values-based companies being driven by a growing contingency of values-focused consumers. With more options available to the buyer than ever, consumers will continue to gravitate more and more toward supporting the businesses and brands that align with their values. The companies with strong values who are able to convey that story to their consumers, with authenticity, will win. Alissa also shares the vision behind the forthcoming “Colorado Backcountry Investment Camp,” taking place in Colorado in April of this year. AdVenturesAcademy's event brings together select entrepreneurs and investors in a backcountry environment to learn survival, team building, leadership, and innovation skills together. Sears says that hosting the event in the backcountry is very intentional, as experiences learned together are highly relevant in outdoors and in business. And, she added, nothing brings out more of a person's true personality than working as part of a team in the backcountry. I couldn't agree more. …   What Alissa, Ted and Luis are spearheading in AdVenturesAcademy is disruptive and the timing is fantastic. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Alissa Sears on this important episode of the Intrepid Entrepreneur!

Every lesson that needs to be learned in life can be taught by nature. When we get out there we have time to breathe, to think, and to reflect on the beauty before us. It teaches us so much. No one knows that better than life-long Outward Bound promotor, Mark Brown. His life journey has taken many turns and his connection with the outdoors has fueled that life of adventure.  After spending his entire career in Outward Bound, he recently published a book titled Outward Bound Lessons to Live a Life of Leadership that interviews some of Outward Bound’s most prominent alumni. They include Luis Benitez, one of the foremost mountaineers in the world, former US Senator Mark Udall, The Home Depot co-founder and current Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, and Kohler Co. VP Laura Kohler. The book identifies the impact of Outward Bound in the world as told through the stories of former instructors and participants who have gone on to make a difference in the world. The lessons focus on what was learned in the wilderness and how it applies to being a powerful, positive leader in any setting.
