Author Ellie Yang Camp and I first crossed paths 24 years ago at a triennial Christian conference for college students. I was the main speaker that week and she was a student leader of her InterVarsity chapter @ Cal. We never met that week, but when her debut book Louder Than the Lies crossed my desk and I read her bio and then saw what she had to say about the insidious and pervasive problems of white supremacy and whiteness, and how they continue to oppress and brainwash many of us Asian Americans, I immediagtely knew I had to bring her on my show. And with Trump having been re-elected to the White House, Ellie's book should be required reading. You can find her on social media @eeewhysee and you can find her book anywhere great books are sold. #whiteness #whitesupremacy #aanhpi #defeatingracism

And does Country need Beyoncé? The likely answer to both of those questions is no. But the discussion Beyoncé sparked seems to be the larger point of her new album, Cowboy Carter. Sidney Madden is a reporter for NPR Music, and has delved deep into the intricate dynamics of race, genre, and industry politics addressed on the album. Audie and Sidney talk about these bigger themes and explore the conversation that's been started by Beyoncé's latest bold venture. Sidney Madden is also co-host of the podcast Louder Than a Riot. Watch, “Call Me Country: Beyoncé & Nashville's Renaissance,” available to stream in the U.S. on Friday, April 26 on Max (subscription required). The documentary examines this reckoning in the genre, straight from the country music capital of the world. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

With so many platforms it can be hard to keep track of the latest pop culture trends. So this week we're sharing pods to keep you current by rounding up the best in pop culture. First, we'll meet MC Sha-Rock. You may not know her name, but she's an integral part of hip-hop history. Her group the Funky 4 + 1 More was one of the first rap groups to ever perform on national TV. But shortly after, her career hit the glass ceiling. Louder Than A Riot explores how Sha-Rock's legacy got buried in the hip-hop archive. Then we look at the origins of another hip hop icon Drake. But we're not talking about his mixtape. We're talking about his performance on Degrassi: The Next Generation:The podcast Back Issue asks "Do you remember the teen show that made you fall in love with teen shows?" From there we change lanes from hip hop to 90s pop. In a clip from Switched on Pop, we'll hear from Seal himself on how his timeless hit "Kiss from a Rose" became a surprising, but enduring classic. Yes, the Batman Forever soundtrack was an integral part of the song's legacy (thank you, Joel Schumacher). Plus: we look into the rise of TV rewatch podcasts. Why are they so popular and why does every celeb seem to have one? Featuring: Switched On Pop: "Kiss From a Rose" is one of the most unusual number one hits of all time. Seal's song can't decide if it's in minor or major, it uses an old-fashioned waltz rhythm, and its lush orchestration and elaborate vocal harmonies support mysterious lyrics about a "greying tower alone on the sea." Seal himself wasn't sure about the song, and needed some convincing to include the composition on his 1994 album SEAL II." Louder Than a Riot: "In 1981, MC Sha-Rock and her group, the Funky 4 + 1, were invited to perform on Saturday Night Live. It was one of the first nationally televised rap performances ever, expanding the reach of the nascent genre to mainstream audiences who might never have heard or seen it before. It was almost certainly the first time many viewers had seen a woman rapping. But little did SNL's audience know that Sha-Rock was hiding something — for the sake of the group's continued success, and for her own survival." Frontburner: "As a kid in the Winnipeg suburb of Transcona, Tyson Smith was obsessed with hockey and the Winnipeg Jets. He dreamed of being a professional goaltender. Decades later, Smith – now known as "Kenny Omega" – has made his way to the Jets' home arena for a different reason: he's performing as a professional wrestler. Omega joined Front Burner host Jayme Poisson to discuss the culture of wrestling in Winnipeg, his path to fame in Japan, his push to expand inclusivity and storytelling in the sport, and swirling rumours about what he'll do next." Back Issue: Josh Gwynn is joined by Amil Niazi to revisit Degrassi: The Next Generation. Does the show stand up? Or did it age about as well the the cottage cheese you forgot in the back of the fridge? 2 Black Girls, 1 Rose: Time for a reality TV deep dive. If you watched season 3 of Love is Blind, then you may have had a lot of questions for Zanab Jaffrey. Co-hosts and real-life BFFs Justine Kay and Natasha Scott-Reichel did too. Here they dig deep on "the cuties debacle," Zanab's experience as a woman of colour dating a white man on TV, their epic wedding breakup, and more! From our friends at Louder Than a Riot, a look back at the origins of Miami's wildest rap icon, Trina Rockstar. Her vivacious vibes and ruthless bars helped flip the script on the double standard that women in the industry often faced. This episode looks at the unwritten rules that continue to shape hip-hop – specifically rule number four: "It ain't trickin' if you got it."

We invited our audience to join in a discussion on what it means to you and your identity to define yourself with a specific label in the trans community and our audience came prepared! We had a fantastic discussion about labels and identity, joined by Special Guests Susan Holtz and Audry Farber who lead the Chicago Gender Society. You can watch and listen to this episode for free and definitely check out our Facebook pageto see all the comments that came in live during this interview. About Susan: Susan Holtz is retired and happily married, but only in the last year has finally been coming to terms with her gender identity after over 50 years of confusion and self-denial. Through an intensive period of self-discovery, she is developing a presence as Susan in society. She is embarking on a path toward true authenticity, honesty with herself and with others, self-acceptance, and striving for a sense of balance, meaning, and a sense of purpose in this new persona. Susan is now a board member as Secretary of the Chicago Gender Society and wants to use the opportunity of this position to give back to the community that has been so generous and welcoming to her. Susan is also contemplating what transitioning as a transgender person means to her. About Audry: The Chicago Gender Society was first formed in 1987 and has made a major impact on Audry's life since joining in 1995. She has since shared the story of her journey over the years in their Primrose Newsletter, has served on the board for nine years as Treasurer, Vice President and is in her third term as President. Audry defines herself as dual gender, which for her means that most of her personal life is happily spent in male mode, though she has transitioned at work as Audry. She shared her truth with her family late last year and the result has been rocky but is still a work in progress. You can hear her stories on the Facebook Page, Louder Than a Momand has also collaborated with influencer Rachel Rollins on her YouTube channel. Chicago Youth Poet Laureate Kara Jackson reads hers and Lucille Clifton's work and then discusses Black feminist embodiment and musical influences -- including but not limited to Jamila Woods, Marvin Gaye, and Joni Mitchell. In the words of Terrance Hayes: "“Kara is amazing! She's a terrific writer of course in the poems but in the prose too. Style plus insight.” Finally: special shout out to Dr. Camea Davis, Urban Word NYC, and The National Youth Poet Laureate Program (see links below) for putting together such a rad collaboration. On Kara Jackson -- Kara Jackson is the daughter of country folks. She is the Youth Poet Laureate of Chicago. Her work investigates a trail of language that leads from the South to the North. Jackson is an alum of the solo voice jazz ensemble at Merit School of Music. Jackson received the Scholastic Art and Writing Award for her short story Nursery Rhymes, which won a silver medal at the national level. She is an Adroit Journal mentee. Jackson is an alum of the Spoken Word Club at Oak Park River Forest High school. She represented the school in the Louder Than a Bomb festival from 2016-2018, and in her final year performed on final stage at the Auditorium Theatre, where she was granted the Literary Award by Patricia Smith. Professional climber, filmmaker, and photographer Jon Glassberg joins the podcast to talk about his production company Louder Than 11 and how he went from getting recognized by his talents on the rock to working behind the camera producing films and content for some of the biggest names in the climbing industry. Growing up in central Virginia, Jon was introduced to rock climbing at a young age during a summer camp he attended and fell in love with it instantly. Although photography would also be introduced to him early on in his high school years, Jon's attention during that time was focused solely on the pursuit of climbing. As he moved through the ranks of competition climbing and also began making a name for himself by sending some of the hardest boulder problems in the country at the time, Jon soon found himself attracting sponsorships and attention from the climbing community. It would be later in college while studying business and graphic design that Jon would start to plan out the possibility of creating a company that could quickly produce short films of all the adventures they were having. Over the years that company has evolved into a full fledged filmmaking and content creation studio working closely with brands like Mountain Hardware and USA Climbing. During our conversation I ask Jon about what it's like trying to balance a career as a creative with the responsibilities of being a sponsored athlete, the type of work he seems to be moving more towards with companies in the outdoor retail space, how he manages to not burn out in such a niche industry, and the advice he gives to others who want to do what he does. EPISODE 30: You know what they say: thirty, flirty & thriving! Real talk though, super cool that my podcast has exited its 20s before I myself have. And what better way to celebrate than with Chicago's own DJ Ca$h Era, of Louder Than a Bomb, Northwestern, & WGN Radio fame! She joins me in studio to talk about when and why she started mixing music, we compare DJ naming experiences (mine is DJ Graham Cracker) and she tells me how Chance the Rapper, DJ INC an Kevin Coval have all shaped her DJ career. Music mixed by @DJCashEra herself!
Gary's guest this week is photographer, explorer, and theatre artist Stephan Mazurek. Stephan is a storyteller - on screens, on stages, on buildings and on the web. He is a director of photography, still photographer, playwright, theatre director and projection designer. His clients include The Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel, Food Network and ESPN, as well as spot work for Skittles, Nikon, Oscar Mayer, McDonalds and Goo Gone! Stephan is an acclaimed documentary photographer. His favorite long form documentary project was the award-winning Louder Than a Bomb, which followed 10 Chicago area high school students for a year as they prepared for a poetry competition. He also spent more than a year in Turkey, Somalia, Iraq and Bosnia shooting Love is a Verb, which tells the fascinating story of Fethullah Gulen, the exiled religious leader of the transnational social movement that began in Turkey in the 1960s, and bears his name. Gulen has been in the news recently because Mike Flynn was offered $15 million if he could bring him back to Turkey. Here is a photo of Stephan filming in Somalia with an armed body guard. Documentary film-making has taken Stephan all over the world. He tells Booth One about a favorite place - Northern Ireland. He says there is something about "the pace, the color, the light" that make him feel comfortable there. Though he has never taken a photography class, still photography remains Stephan's first love because "I know when I have it." He tells us how he gets inspired "just walking around." As a theater artist, Stephan has worked on numerous productions, designing projections for plays and musicals, including Shining Lives at Northlight Theatre. He also designed projections for The Remembered City, part of the Tim Evans' Traffic series at Steppenwolf, which featured Tony Fitzpatrick and Steve Earle and was directed by our producer, Betsy Ingram. Stephan is currently working on a screenplay. We can't wait to hear what it's about and see the film! Gary and Stephan discuss the infinite variety of theatre experiences available these days in Chicago, and what memorable stage encounters stay with them through the years. Stephan's was in Spain, Gary's in Hamburg, Germany. Stephan admits to being highly selective when choosing to take on a theatrcal project, knowing that he will want to fully dive into the work. He's looking to be challenged, inspired and wholly committed to the process. Having gone to some of the more troubled spots in the world to "get the shot", Stephan relates a harrowing story about his interpreters in southern Turkey near the Syrian border while filming Love is a Verb. After getting him lost and then lying about their exact location, Stephan has decided that in future, he will demand translators instead - someone who will repeat his conversations word for word and not "interpret" what he is saying or asking. A good lesson learned. Kiss of Death: Frances Hansen, Who Wrote Poetry Across and Down The New York Times published 82 of Mrs. Hansen's crossword puzzles, starting in the 1960s. The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times and book publishers like Dell, Random House and Simon & Schuster also printed puzzles she constructed. A diabolical cruciverbalist, Hansen often used her own original poems and limericks as answers in the 21x21 grid that makes up the Sunday NYT magazine crossword puzzle. Many times clues were given backwards, and answers were to be entered back to front. She said that puzzles came to her in her sleep, left there by the "idea Fairy." Mrs. Hansen was 85.

EPISODE 26: Chicago’s first ever Youth Poet Laureate, E’mon Lauren joins me on the show this week to talk about her brand new book of poems, Commando! She tells me about finding and embracing writing and poetry at a young age, participating in different Louder Than a Bomb teams throughout high school and finding confidence in her unique and powerful voice. Then, she walked me through her influences, which range from the streets of Chicago to her artistic and strong—willed Mother, Laura, to Gwendolyn Brooks, Kanye West and re-runs of ’A Different World.’ Finally, E’mon shares a couple of her poems (and I get the chills).

Oh shit, it actually happened... Episode 1. January 1st, 2016. The very last time I'll be on time. Mark it on your calendars! In this, our inaugural episode, we talk with pro climber Carlo Traversi, exploring the merits of being dynamic in your climbing. We take a close look at his approach to an impressive send of "Sky" (V14), that required rethinking an enormous move. Carlo came up with a solution that most of us never would have considered. Adidas Killswitch video of Carlo doing Sky (V14) Rocklands, South Africa. We also discuss his signature move, the Pogo, and how to determine when you might be using your new skill TOO much. As one can attest from their April 24 take over of 21 digital billboards in NYC’s Times Square, no one is going to accuse Hillsong Worship (nee Hillsong Live) of being understated or subtle – well, at least in terms of promotion. Their latest collection, No Other Name, released this week, coincides with the Hillsong Church celebrating 30 years of ministry. After such a bold statement, the question is whether Hillsong Worship can deliver the goods with this 11-song offering. We set loose contributor Jessica Collins to find out and research the reviews. Read on to enjoy the results of her labor. The ConsensusFrankly, it was difficult to find a dissenting voice. Critics were effectively universal in praising the release, yet they were not effusive in their response. A common thread among comments is an appreciation for the tasteful and inspired interweaving of classic hymns with new songs. Hillsong hasn’t abandoned their tried-and-true big anthem approach, and they continue to execute it well and resist being lulled into formulaic product. No Other Name appears to demonstrate a continuing commitment by Hillsong to produce quality, Christ-focused worship and to be a resource to the universal church.HallelsReview Link: http://www.hallels.com/articles/2095/20140627/hillsong-worship-no-other-name-album-review.htmKey quote:“Yet, the album forges ahead onto new grounds. Instead of diluting their lyrical content by borrowing stacks of clichés from their secular peers, they have harkened back to the rich heritage of the church giving these songs a heftier theological depth and dimension.”New Release TuesdayReview Link: http://www.newreleasetuesday.com/albumdetail.php?album_id=14045Key quotes:“…they continue to resource churches around the globe with brand new songs that consistently make up the most anticipated worship album year after year.”“Ever-committed to resourcing individuals, worship teams and churches alike, the Hillsong Worship team seeks to bring songs that are as diverse as the greater Church herself is.”Christian Music ReviewReview Link: http://christianmusicreview.org/hillsong-worship-no-other-name/Key quote:“One thing you can always count on from Hillsong and that is singable, passionate songs that glorify God and express faith and devotion to Christ…No Other Name points us towards Jesus, the only One whose name has the power to release us from everything that attempts to drag us down. “Louder Than the MusicReview Link: http://louderthanthemusic.com/document.php?id=4395Key quote:“These are songs that will draw the worshipper closer to God…the songs are much gentler and intimate. We have become so used to Hillsong albums that are very much ‘in your face’, with big powerful guitars and drums producing anthemic praise songs, but these songs let the worshipper breathe a little bit more and sit in the presence of the King of Kings.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Welcome to Episode 8 of "Artists Mean Business" with Jess Kaswiner. Taking time away from our busy schedule at the One State in the Arts Conference in Bloomington, I sat down with Kevin Coval, Spoken Word artist and co-founder of Louder Than a Bomb. We chatted about what it takes to start an art education program in this city and what it means to stay 'fresh' with your pedagogy. Download the podcast to hear Kevin's take on how Chicago schools can start improving arts education today to build successful artists for the future. Kevin Coval's work inspires youth where they live and meets them on their turf; often juxtaposing historical poets with contemporary hip-hop artists. His work as a poet and author have earned him national recognition, serving as poet-in-residence at The Jane Addams’ Hull House Museum at The University of Illinois-Chicago and poet-in-residence at The University of Chicago’s Newberger Hillel Center. Check out the film 'Louder Than a Bomb' or be on the look out for his upcoming book, "L-vis Lives: Racemusic Poems"
