Steak Mtn (Christopher Norris) did the art for several Against Me! records including this one. We talk about the album White Crosses, the revolution being a lie, collaborating on art with Laura, Christopher's not a fan of anarcho-bucket music, getting that Warner Bros. money, this album has sheen but it also has teeth, the iconic Transgender Dysphoria Blues meat-cube album cover, scanning porn magazines and melting them in Photoshop, major-label tinkering, Laura being a teenage anarchist, The Ocean is an Against Me! song from the future, White Crosses is not pop-punk; it's pop-rock, more Florida talk, Robert McNamara's son is a farmer and I interviewed him once, Christopher sat on a flight with the manager who was suing the band, writing a book is hard, and he's not an artist nor is he an author, but he did design this record cover and you can buy his novel, The Holy Day, now. steakmtn.com https://www.rosebooks.co/ twitter.com/steakmtn twitter.com/routinelayup Email the show: delugepodcast@gmail.com Support the show: patreon.com/afterthedeluge --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/afterthedeluge/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/afterthedeluge/support

Today's guest is Christopher Norris aka Steak Mtn, the visual artist behind album art for bands like Against Me!, the frontman of Combatwoundedveteran, and now the author of the new book THE HOLY DAY. He's here to help us figure out what happened to Lindsay Lohan, former teen idol from films like FREAKY FRIDAY and MEAN GIRLS, who seemed on her way to working with legendary directors like Robert Altman. Instead her career took some strange turns before fizzling out, and we're talking two of the most Unwatchable examples: 2007's horror fiasco I KNOW WHO KILLED ME, and Paul Schrader's 2013 “erotic thriller” THE CANYONS. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/unwatchablespod/message
This week Drusilla and Josh are joined by the legendary Steak Mtn aka Christopher Norris. Steak Mtn is the graphic designer behind legendary punk bands like Against Me! and others and is the author of Hunchback '88. He's also a hardcore punk musician and sometimes porn director. Steak brought the gang Jean Rollin's Lips of Blood. From Wikipedia: "Lèvres de Sang (English: Lips of Blood) is a 1975 French horror film directed by Jean Rollin. The film tells the story of a man who begins to have visions of a young woman dressed in white who is locked behind the gates of a château.[1][2] The director was "forced" to shoot the hardcore version as well under the title Suce Moi Vampire.[3]"But first! Black Phone, the theaters of New York City, Belladonna of Sadness, X, and Ti West, the remakes of the 2000s, Ticket of No Return and Ulrike Ottinger. Movies getting porn films wrong. Then the gang gets into the feature and the work of Jean Rollin, who made tons of erotic horror movies in the 70s as well as hardcore porn. Steak Mtn saw these in the 90s and they struck a chord with him. Josh loves that this begins at a perfume launch party and how pretentious it is. Goofy fangs. How much of the movie is just vampires walking? A lot! And so what. Drusilla compares it to the Spanish film Count Dracula's Great Love. The movie has a secret cabal storyline that's a little weird, but it has great weird interiors, too, so it evens out. Dario Argento comes up a lot. There's a Jean Rollin film INSIDE this Jean Rollin film. The ending is so beautiful and romantic. But is it incest? Next week's movie is a Polish mermaid horror musical, The Lure. What is the value of science communication if there is distrust in the accuracy, completeness, or truthfulness of the information presented? Media will often use strategies of selectivity to present a narrative that is most appealing to their financial interests (cannabis causes schizophrenia? Find out tonight at 6), but do not work to benefit the public whatsoever. In fact, these techniques to conceal some information, while bringing other info to light actively works against the interest of the public, and instead dissuades critical thinking and further fact checking, ultimately creating confusion and causing more harm than good. The structure of the information, the literacy of the consumer, and the accessibility of the material determine how the information is used, by whom, and the influence it ultimately has on a group, community, or society. We planned to give you Dr. Christopher Norris's work on the positive vs negative effects of cannabis intoxication (euphoria vs anxiety) and the associated biomarkers, but we got into a discussion on the problems with pop-science & science communication - from scientist communication fails, to public ignorance, to flat out fake news portrayed by media. Stay tuned for this exciting cannabis-related episode coming soon!Produced by Roger Hudson, PhDcDirected by Dr. Mina Nashed, PhDVisual Effects by Dr. Stephen Daniels, PhDAudio Mixing by Dr. Paul Sheppard, PhDDigital Marketing by Bryan Jenkins, PhDc

What the hell is going on with publishing? Lots of empty opinion, hype, doom saying and general noise. Cutting through to the signal is difficult – but heck, that’s what LAD does best! So tonight, we bring you an author, a leading industry expert and a publishing rain-maker (oh yes) to cut through the cacophony and tell us exactly what’s going on. Hint: it’s not all bad news. While a quarter of all Americans didn’t read a single book last year (you know who you are) over in Iceland, a million books get checked out of the Reykjavík city library every year... and that’s in a city of only 200,000 residents! What's more, those frozen Icelandic nutters have a tradition where people buy each other books for Christmas and sit down to read them on Christmas eve often while drinking hot chocolate or alcohol-free christmas ale! It's called Jolabokaflod. Our rain-making guest Christopher Norris is bigging it up although frankly, it's unAmerican. Speaking of unAmerican, and books (seamless segues: it's what we do) another of tonight's guests— the whip-sharp, and ethically-focused former barrister Leila Segal-- has just published Breathe, her steamy short story collection set in Fidel Castro's Cuba. Read it and you'll know she's been there-- heck, she reads a slice to us on air! But even if Leila takes your breath away (and she will) with hundreds of new titles being publsihed every week, how can she sell the book without selling her authenticity? And even if her metric is more profound than sales, how can her work affect more people? We’re delighted that one of the publishing industry’s most senior experts can join us for this show. Neill Denny, editor of the publishing trade's daily news magazine BookBrunch, has had a ring-side seat to the publishing world's lumbering move to digital for more than a decade. Neill graciously allows us to pick his industrial-sized brain on trends, famous authors, the role of your local bookshop and more. He even offers us some hope: turns out the rise of coloring books for adults is actually propping up some first-rate literary fiction-- who knew? So look out readers, authors, agents and publishers, tonight, we're bringing sexy back. Only in paperback! Release the Jolabokaflod! Follow Christopher @chris24n! Buy Leila's book!
