Everyone knows the legacy of The Exorcist, and conversely everyone knows the infamy of Exorcist II: The Heretic, a deeply hated follow-up to the original that jettisoned most of what made it work. Here we talk about the convoluted direction and ideas, the poor soundstage work, the Linda Blair fetishism (creepy!) and a whole lot more. Synopsis The film begins 17 years after the events of The Exorcist and follows the characters Father Dyer and Lieutenant Kinderman who have kindled their friendship from the shared tragedy of losing their friend Father Karras. A series of murders in Washington DC copycat the Gemini Killer, who has been dead for 17 years. Kinderman is befuddled that they include Gemini's trademarks that were never revealed to the public. The investigation leads to a psychiatric ward and a supernatural suspect. Review of Exorcist III The Exorcist 3 certainly does a better job of carrying forth the themes and story of the first film, however it never comes close to matching its quality. That being said, it's a vast improvement over the incomprehensible mess of Exorcist II: The Heretic. The film is written and directed by William Peter Blatty, the author of the original Exorcist novel. While the writing is good, and the characters and relationships strong, the direction is a mixed bag at best. It's hard to put a finger on whether it is because of Blatty's lack of experience, this being only his second film he directed, or because of the studio interference demanding a more direct sequel. The answer is probably both. The relationship between Dyer and Kinderman is the best part and the heart of the film. The dialogue between them genuinely feels like old friends sharing a laugh and challenging each other’s philosophies. Like the Exorcist, the dichotomy of good vs evil, and the nature of man is explored. Like the original, the forces of evil seem to be unhindered, and as such, the tone is oppressive and dark at times. The standout performance is Brad Dourif as the Gemini Killer. Rarely has Dourif been given the free reign to appear on screen as himself and deliver a truly scene chewing performance that displays his full range. It goes from calm meticulousness to unhinged rage within seconds. The things that hold back the film from being great are the unrefined visual style, and the obviously wedged in and tonally divergent exorcism in act 3. It goes from a tight and oppressive thriller to a bombastic supernatural bombardment in the last act. Score 7/10

The deep dive into the 'Exorcist' franchise continues, with underloved and underseen sequel 'Exorcist II: The Heretic' getting its time to shine! Is it a misbegotten failure to replicate the grim intensity of the original, or is it actually a pretty typical 70s sci-fi thriller with the era's usual emphasis on ESP, paranormal powers, and the next step in human evolution? Time for you to take a listen and find out!
On today's Halloween special, we're joined by author and visual artist Christopher Norris for two films that are decidedly NOT The Exorcist. William Friedkin's 1973 phenomenon inspired plenty of imitators, but few rode its coattails as closely as these: 1974's Italian-made knock-off BEYOND THE DOOR—a minor hit that was sued for copyright infringement—and John Boorman's official, infamously reviled 1977 sequel EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC.You can find more from Chris, including his latest novel, at https://steakmtn.com/Unwatchables is hosted by Marc Dottavio and Seth Troyer, produced by Tony Scarpitti, featuring artwork by Micah Kraus. Directed by John Boorman and starring Richard Burton and Linda Blair, the latter returning to play the possessed child Regan, this sequel has been referred to as one of the worst movies of all time since its release in 1977. Priestley, the film features an ensemble cast that includes Boris Karloff, Melvyn Douglas, Gloria Stuart, Charles Laughton, Lilian Bond, Ernest Thesiger, Raymond Massey and Eva Moore.[5][6] Set in interwar Wales, the film follows five travellers who seek shelter from a violent storm in the decaying country house of the eccentric Femm family.”Also discussed: feeling good and self-improvement, Jacob's Ladder, The Exorcist II: The Heretic, The People Under the Stairs and other Wes Craven deep cuts, and more. Everybody loves an underdog story, so when a franchise is able follow up a stinker of an entry with a fan favorite, you know we've got to talk about it. EXORCIST III: LEGION ((1990) is one such film and it atones for every sin from Exorcist II: The Heretic - just check its prayer beads! It's got William Peter Blatty in the writer AND director's chair, George C. Scott and Brad Dourif… You can't go wrong with that kind of star power. It's also got jump scares that rival the original, another feat worth praising. Come wash away your transgressions with a confession session at the church of HMN! On the next installment of the Star Wars Spooktacular aka Star Wars Spooky Dookie we will head back to the year it all began, 1977. No this isn't to talk about Star Wars, but instead we will discuss another well known franchise as we tackle The Exorcist II: The Heretic. There is a Star Wars connection and if you've seen the film it will be pretty obvious what it is. It takes a brave creative team to give Exorcist II: The Heretic a run for its money as worst "Exorcist" film, but at least part two was lovably batshit and a work of care and pearsonal vision, even if that vision was really weird. They said it couldn't be done. They said it shouldn't be done. But Thor didn't listen to the advice of our two lawyers and made 1000 episodes anyway. This episode starts out with us discussing the special milestone, and we jump into Exorcist II at 29:06.
We got 999 problems, but an editor ain't one. McFly made this clip show from over 10 years of nonsense and Scarlet Witch designed the artwork. McFly's Best of Archive, including the radio plays. Here's a list of all topics covered so far. Reach out if you'd like to listen to a classic episode. The next traditional topic will be Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977).
Who possessed these filmmakers to make one of the worst sequels of all time? The Exorcist 2 is a befuddling mess that bears no resemblance to the original. Synopsis In this sequel to the Exorcist, Father Lamont, played by Richard Burton, is assigned to investigate the last exorcism of Father Merrin to clear his name of any doubt of faith. Father Lamont finds Regan spending her time in therapy in a psychiatric institute that appears to be the backrooms of Westworld. Her doctor, Gene Tuskin, played by Louise Fletcher is testing out a new device that synchronizes hypnotic states… or something. In the course of her experiments and Father Lamont's investigation, we find out that Regan isn't Exorcized, but just mostly exorcized. In the end, we get more pazuzu than we bargained for… Review of The Exorcist II: The Heretic The Exorcist still stands as one of the best movies of all time, and still is my favorite horror movie. So I have always been intrigued by The Exorcist 2, and the fact that it's so bad, that almost no one ever talks about it. Exorcist 2 is widely regarded as one of the worst movies ever made, and probably the worst sequel ever made. How does this happen? If you look at the cast, there are some real heavy hitters. The film's cast includes one Oscar winner (Louise Fletcher) and five Oscar nominees (Linda Blair, Max von Sydow, Richard Burton, Ned Beatty, and James Earl Jones). It's directed by Sir John Boorman, the director of Deliverance. In short, a bunch of people that should have known better than to absolutely abandon everything that made the original good. Instead of grounding the story in reality and the characters' humanity to further analyze the nature of good, evil, and faith; we are treated to some kind of scifi supernatural fever dream. The film feels like it was written on the fly, and that's not far from the truth. After it's disastrous opening, it was pulled twice from theaters to be recut, and even after all that, this film is utterly befuddling. There are some scenes, especially involving the hypnotism device, that are so hilariously inept that it feels like they were written as jokes. If you dig deep enough, you can find some interesting ideas about good attracting evil, and the dangers of getting too close to evil, but they are completely overwhelmed by the bizarre choices in the story. It is a very bad movie, but the case can be made that it's so bad that it's good. This is definitely an oddity, and could be a good time with friends if you want something to riff on while watching. Score 3/10

SHOW NOTES It's November, so our Casual Explorers have novels to write, but we also want to bring you the innovative Casual Content you crave, so we're going to go through all of Short Trek in a two part binge. We've make some new friends alongside Tilly as we discover that Ice Cream isn't a universal constant like Sweedish Meatballs (Babylon 5 fans will get that one) in Runaway while in the far-future, things feel a bit like the opener to most RPGs with FPS mechanics in Calypse. After that, things go a little bit folk horror for the Kelpians as we get Saru's secret origin in The Brightest Star while Miles becomes disturbingly obsessed with saying 'Jippers on a Beach' like he's Harry Mudd in The Escape Artists. Next episode will see us wrap up the Short Excursion with the second season of Short Treks!- 8:01- Runaway (ST)- 19:21- Calypso (ST) - 29:21- The Brightest Star (ST) - 39:17- The Escape Artists (ST) Talking points include- Harlan Ellison's agressive tendencies, The Exorcist II: The Heretic, Wes Anderson and The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar, Charlie hates Maroon 5 (But when pressed on this, he simply replied 'Who Doesn't?'), we had a LOT of music on this one, Asteroid City, folk horror, Bioshock and RPGS with First Person Shooter Tendencies, Classic Doctor Who fans having very obsessive tendencies, every time Charlie talks about Delgrassi Junior High, he paints an ever more disturbing image of a Canadian Teen Drama written and directed by Sam Peckinpah, Quinton Review's Long YouTube Videos about Carly 101 and VicTORIous, Rick and Morty and apparantly the British being unable to pronounce anyone's names correctly. Pedants Corner: Miles is editing the two Short Trek episodes and that has inspired him to take some of the editing load off Charlie giving them both one episode a month to edit, there may be a few spotty edits, but there we go. The Quinton Review discussion went in a few tangents dealing with personal stuff that both Miles and Charlie decided were best left out of the episode itself. For the 150th episode of the podcast, returning guest Meg Shields joins me from Vancouver for a show about William Friedkin's legendary horror film The Exorcist, which turns 50 years old this December. I had always been TOO SCARED to watch the original Exorcist (even though I had seen the first two sequels) so for this podcast, as a farewell tribute to Hurricane Billy who passed away this August, I watched it for the first time. Meg and I discuss this prototypical blockbuster based on the bestselling novel by William Peter Blatty, the first horror movie to be Oscar nominated for Best Picture, and a cultural phenomenon where audiences lined up for hours hoping to buy a ticket for this endurance test, with many reports of horrified walkouts and fainting spells in the lobby at every screening. We discuss the differences between the original 1973 theatrical version and the “director's cut” from the year 2000, the criticism of this film in some circles as a reactionary and patriarchal work, Friedkin's insane conduct on the set (including mistreatment of the actors), the strange connection between The Exorcist and Freidkin's later film Cruising, and Meg and I wonder what Hurricane Billy would have said about this year's “legacy sequel” The Exorcist: Believer, which opened two months after his death. It's time for Part 1 of our "Priests in Peril" double-feature!Part 1 is the widely despised sequel, EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC (1977)! For what it's worth, The Exorcist II The Heretic should have sank the franchise forever. Not many horror movie series recover from being laughed off the screen. But, what Warner Brothers didn't want, Morgan Creek did. James G Robinson was now in control of the franchise, and what he wanted was another Exorcist film. But author William Peter Blatty did not want to do a movie version of his book Legion and sell it as The Exorcist III. Not after The Heretic's bad taste was still lingering. But Robinson was insistent. And after both original director William Friedkin and horror maestro John Caroenter both turned the project down, Blatty figured he should just do it himself. The result is one of the most under appreciated at the time release in horror history. While it wasn't laughed at like its predecessor, The Exorcist III was not embraced upon its release. Listen to Garrett, Matt, and Mik discuss whether this was reception was warranted. And come back next week as they reconvene to talk about director Renny Harlin's Exorcist: The Beginning!
Your Stupid Minds is back with more spooky fare for Halloween. At least, it gives the air of spookification. If you find mind meld hypnosis machines, panopticon-like modern interior design, and fever dreams about locusts spooky, then you'd probably find 1977's Exorcist II: The Heretic adequately spooky. After a botched exorcism in Latin America leads to a woman “accidentally” setting herself on fire, Father Lamont (Richard Burton) is tasked with investigating the life and work of the late Father Merrin (Max von Sydow), who gave his life performing the exorcism in the first movie. He travels to New York where Regan (Linda Blair) has no memory of her past possession, and undergoes psychiatric treatment at a cutting edge facility led by Dr. Gene Tuskin (Louise Fletcher). They use an experimental “synchronizer” machine to mind meld each other to relive past trauma in order to treat it. Instead, it unlocks the dormant Pazuzu, the demon from the first movie. Now Lamont must travel from Washington D.C. to Africa to Washington D.C. again to investigate this demon and defeat it once and for all. His travels involve seeking out a man named Kokumo (James Earl Jones), once-possessed by Pazuzu and exorcised by Merrin, who may hold the key, and special powers, the defeat the demon once and for all.
It might be hard to fathom now, but in 1977 ‘horror sequel' was a foreign term. Sure, the Universal Monsters had sequels where they were visited by a bride, Abbot, and Costello. But to have a film that follows a set of characters after they were terrorized for two hours in a previous film was unheard of. So when The Exorcist was released to huge box office and critical success, Warner Brothers saw a massive opportunity to cash in. But instead of Jason Miller, they had Richard Burton. And instead of Ellen Burstyn, they had Kitty Winn. Perhaps most importantly, instead of a on his game William Friedkin directing, they had a first Exorcist hating John Boorman. The result is The Exorcist II The Heretic, one of the most derided films of all time. Listen in as Garrett, Matt, and Mik dissect everything from how Boorman exploited his actors to what after several series together finally ‘broke' Mik. And be sure to tune in next week as the guys look at what many call one of the most underrated horror films of the 90s, The Exorcist III

Episode 368: The Crew's riding on the wings of some demonic locusts while watching John Boorman's The Exorcist II: The Heretic. The first Exorcist sequel ditches the horror and adds fantasy and sci-fi elements. ESP, shared dreams, metaphorical evil locusts, Regan's new chosen one role, and a Poltergeist style ending do add something new, but most of it makes no sense to the audience. And there's so much talent, both in front of and behind the camera. The Crew discusses. If you like our music intro, head over to Soundcloud and hear more amazing music from aquariusweapon.
