It has long been said that the United States has benefited from its geography, when it comes to national security. This is attributed to vast oceans to the east and west, along with friendly neighbors to the north and south. The same can be said for Canada, with Santa being a pretty friendly neighbor to the north, one would assume. Do to this shared advantage, which might be less true today, Canada and the United States have long worked together to secure "Fortress North America". From the defensive structures of NORAD and NATO, to the continued force projection taking on some of the biggest challenges of the day, these two countries have collaborated in a number of military spaces. While it would take too long to dive into all the shared challenges that these countries face on the global stage, we did take a special opportunity to speak with the Canadian Defense Attaché to the United States about several of the biggest issues of the day. Major General Michel-Henri St-Louis of the Canadian Armed Forces graciously gave his time to talk about NATO, NORAD, Ukraine, and the current state of Canada's military and integration with American forces. With a thirty-plus year military career, the Major General has held many high level commands across multiple theatres, as he has helped to ensure Canada upholds its international security obligations. This episode tackles important questions, from what challenges do the armed forces face in terms of readiness, what support has the Canadian government provided to Ukraine, and how our adversaries actively work to undermine important foreign policy conversations here in the US and Canada. This fascinating and unique conversation provides access to top level military thinking, accessible for all.Major-General Michel-Henri St-Louis is an infantry officer from le Royal 22e Régiment, currently serving as the Defence Attaché to the United States. Born in Managua, Nicaragua, he and his family moved to the south shore of Montreal in 1978 during the time of the Sandinista Revolution. Before assuming his current responsibilities at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, DC, MGen St-Louis was the Acting Commander of the Canadian Army. This followed his appointment as the Canadian Army's Training Authority. Preceding this, he served as the Commander of Joint Task Force - IMPACT in the Middle East for more than a year (mid 2019 – mid 2020). Other previous commands and appointments include Deputy Commanding General for Operations of America's First Corps (I Corps - US Army) at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (2017-2019), command of 5e Groupe-Brigade Mécanisé du Canada (2015-2017), as well as commander of the last Canadian Battle-Group in charge of combat operations in Panjwai, Kandahar (2010-2011).Through his service he and his family have lived in Saint-Jean, Québec City, Oromocto, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Washington, D.C., Washington State and Kingston (Ontario). He has deployed on 6 different missions, to such places as Srebrenica (Bosnia), Rastevic (Croatia), Zgon (Bosnia), Kabul, Kandahar (Afghanistan) and the OP IMPACT Middle East area or operations (Kuwait-Iraq-Jordan-Lebanon).He has attended the US PINNACLE and CAPSTONE Leadership Programs, followed seminars at the Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies (NDU) and the US Army War College. He is a graduate of the National War College (Washington, D.C., U.S.A.), the Canadian Forces College, le Collège Militaire Royal de Saint-Jean, the Royal Military College in Kingston, and the Canadian Army Command and Staff College. His three Masters degrees have focused on the study of war, defence and strategy. He served as chief of staff at the operational level in the 1st Canadian Air Division. In addition, he served three times at the strategic level with the Director General of Strategic Planning, within the Canadian Army Staff and with the Strategic Joint Staff.

I was able to view the 2024 solar eclipse totality and captured the sound. It's a little windy later in the tape, so pardon that part. Returning to Fika with Vicky this week are Authors Shelley (Michelle) Dorey and Jim Moriarty. We had so much fun discussing their A Haunting in Kingston Series in Episode 37, that we decided to visit again with their Witch Way paranormal fiction series. From Michelle ““I've lived in Kingston Ontario all my life, born here, went to Queen's University, and raised my children in this historic city. I like the size and feel of the city and can't think of living anywhere else. Jim Moriarty is my spouse and partner in life, but he was born and lived in New York City, specifically the Bronx. When he was in his twenties, he came to Canada to ski at Mont Tremblant and within a year, he uprooted his life to move here, raising his own kids in Smith Falls which is fairly close to Kingston. We met in 2010 and have been together since then. It was finding a soul mate for both of us, and well worth the wait. We both enjoy skiing, our trips to Cuba every winter, enjoying a beer at our firepit in the evening, and playing with our pug, Suki. We started writing the Hauntings of Kingston series after going on the local Haunted Walk in 2012. It was fun visiting spots in Kingston and hearing tales of ghosts that have been seen in houses, taverns and even near the courthouse where the gallows once stood. But when we got home, we were frustrated as well; we were given the bare bones of the tales, missing the details of the stories. Who were the people who encountered the ghosts? How did the haunting happen? How did the people experience living in a house that was haunted? And that is what sparked the first novel – The Haunting of Crawley House. It is loosely based on a haunted residence that the university owns. We were told a woman died tragically while living there, and that her spirit has been seen in the garden and also in the attic area of the home to this very day. But who was the woman? How did she die? All we were told was it had been a tragic death. What if it was murder? As you can see, asking questions like that flings open the door to the imagination. Well, after finishing that tour, Jim and I started musing on the tale. What if the woman who died was in fact murdered? Why was she killed? And why is she still on this mortal plane, not having moved over to the other side? And that's how my career as an author began. We were in our kitchen, playing this game of ‘what if', and answering the questions. As we did, a story came to life. Today, we call our kitchen ‘The Magic Room'. That's because for many books now, as we prepare and eat supper we brainstorm, bouncing ideas off each other, pausing to jot notes. From there, I will write the next day and he'll do a read-back where things get expanded or changed. There is always a back and forth. There are times that Jim will do a complete re-write of a chapter if he feels it could use more passion. Jim is the more dramatic and I'm the more aloof but disciplined type. It's a good balance and partnership in writing. We are both fans of Stephen King, Anne Rice and Dean Koontz and we read a lot. After writing many frightening tales of ghosts and hauntings, I wanted to write books with more of a fantasy and magical theme. Well, that brought me to a new pen name (Shelley Dorey—yes, I know, how original, huh? LOL . As Shelley Dorey, I've written books about women approaching mid-life and becoming witches, as well as younger women discovering magical realms. My life is so rich, and I'm very blessed. Kingston, ON has a fantastically bright craft beer scene, and no brewery has taken that more literally than Daft. Co-Founder Adam and brewer Rich joined Cee and Nate to chat about what's changed since we spoke to them last in late 2021, the move to cans from bottles, aging their dark beers, how amazing West Coast IPAs are, where the Kingston beer scene is at, the challenges of distributing beer, their LCBO switch out, and some of the stories behind their beer names. They got into a gang of Daft brews, including Barenaked Light Lager, Thirst Trap DDH IPA, Day Off Strawberry, Peach & Cream IPA, Throwing Shade Black Lager, Down By The River West Coast IPA, and Dad Bod DIPA. This was super fun, cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads
We made it to 150 in the Adjunct Series, y'all! Almost two years exactly to the recording date, we finally had Andrew Silver from Kingston, ON's Fine Balance back on the pod. We caught up on what's been happening the last two years, we went in-depth into their third-anniversary beers (all 9 of them!), we discussed the value of joining provincial bodies like the Ontario Craft Brewers Association, the pros and cons of getting SKUs in the LCBO, how breweries can survive "in this economy", and how to appeal to craft beer drinkers in every segment of the market. We got into their Bene Pilsner collab with Bar Volo, Single Pop IPA with Badlands, Double Pop Double IPA with Town, and Triple Pop Triple IPA with Counterpart, Gelato Sour with peaches and vanilla, and Reclaim, their bourbon barrel-aged Eisbock (all but Bene were anniversary beers). This was a truly thought-provoking conversation - cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

If anyone would like to read our books, we publish our ebooks exclusively on Amazon, with our books enrolled in the Kindle Unlimited program. For the past month, we've reduced the two haunting series we've written to 99 cents each as a run up to

This year we're embarking on the task of building a brand new CityOfKingston.ca. Not just a fresh coat of paint, but levelling it and rebuilding from the ground up. It's been a decade since the City last undertook this work on our most significant community-facing communications tool. Scott Tulk, Manager of Digital Transformation Architecture and Planning, is at the mic to talk about what's changed in ten years (a lot!), what a website redesign at this scale involves, and how we're centring the user experience. Beloved in their native Canada but often unheralded elsewhere, Kingston Ontario's The Tragically Hip made intelligent, intensely evocative rock music that won them legions of fans in the Great White North. Their final concert in 2016 - after lead singer Gord Downie's tragic diagnosis of terminal brain cancer a year earlier - was broadcast globally by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as a cross-platform television, radio and internet streaming special. Notes: Wendy Luella Perkins sings to telemarketers, tells of her brother choosing her for his show-and-tell, and why she has a tik-tok channel. She talks about auditory memory, singing as refuge, and the reclamation of her voice. She describes the transition from singer/songwriter work into the Soulful Singing in 2002, and the challenges unique to this kind of therapeutic singing which is not professional therapy. We have the awkward conversation about money -- is it possible to make a living as a songwriter without commodifying song, which is a birthright? Yet again, Patty Piotrowski has created the most appropriate beautiful art in my mind because of the generosity and openness of the bloom. Songwriter Info: Wendy Luella Perkins has been singing and making up songs since she was a very young child. When she was three years old, her older brother, Tim, took her to school as his Show+Tell item saying, “this is my sister Wendy Lu, listen to her sing!” She's been going strong ever since. As a singer-songwriter, Unitarian Universalist community minister, and founder, in 2002 of Soulful Singing (singing meditation for all) Wendy Luella leverages the power of song to build authentic, healing and joyful communities. A prolific writer of folk songs and meditative chants and supportive guide who helps others to create their own songs, Wendy Luella's greatest joy is to bring friends and strangers together in the transformational circle of song. Wendy Luella has produced three CDs of original music, which you can find on her website. As a response to pandemic restrictions and recognizing the need to keep on singing in community, especially in difficult times, Wendy Luella transitioned Soulful Singing to online sessions in March 2020. Soulful Singers from all over have been gathering online EVERY SINGLE DAY since then and once a week on THURSDAY evenings. Everyone is welcome to join Soulful Singing via Zoom. Singing daily over the last 875+ days with wonderful folks from Kingston and around the world has encouraged Wendy Luella to share her original songs more broadly in what she calls her “Song Liberation Project” (The SLiP). She has written hundreds of songs and with The SLiP is sharing them one by one on TikTok. Wendy Luella grew up in rural Nova Scotia, and has lived in Kingston Ontario for over 25 years with her sweetheart and fellow musician, Charlie Walker. She loves waking early, walking daily, eating communally, crafting publicly, sharing deeply, gardening bountifully, laughing abundantly and of course, singing soulfully! Notes: This poignant song by Wendy Luella Perkins comes from early on in the pandemic -- a time of fear and grieving -- yet also, in the early mornings, the streets were so unusually quiet in the cities that birdsong was clearly audible. You'll be able to hear the echo of a dove call in the melody, which I teach with extra care so you can feel comfortable and relaxed singing it. This song helps me notice what I'm hearing around me -- and when I notice the sounds around me, I drop into the present micro-second, where all is well. In the next episode, there's a songwriter conversation with Wendy Luella, which includes not one, not two, but four songs that can be personal assistants as we heal, adapt, and grow. Notes: I stumbled upon Wendy Luella Perkins a few weeks before recording this episode, when I was browsing in facebook groups of songleaders, looking for new music I loved and wanted to share. I heard "What Am I Rushing To?", and went hunting online to learn more. Several Soulful Singing sessions later, I can say that this intuitive songleader and gracious, gentle song and space creator has become a great gift in my life. Not only do the most beautiful, varied songs seem to pour through her with ease and fluidity, but she understands how to tend herself and those around her with laughter, loving-kindness, and acceptance. Wendy Luella tells the painful origin of this song in a time of grief and conflict... and also how she and small groups of singers have sung it in bus depots, shopping malls, and other public spaces in the month of December, and the delighted reaction from passers-by. Wendy Luella has always dreamed of having this song pop-up in other communities, led by other folks, so if there are podcast listeners who are inspired to offer What Am I Rushing To? in your communities, please do and let her know about it! It can be sung beautifully as a unison song -- and today, I add harmonies to it that were created by members of my family. Rebecca Csuy, Elyse Wadsworth, and Elizabeth Norton joined me in singing it over the American Thanksgiving holiday, and as we played with different harmonies, this combination struck me as particularly suited to the song. It was magical, and gave me a way to imagine you all in the room, too... if I'd been really on top of it, I'd have brought a microphone and recorded us all together!
