The crew each picked a film from his filmography to review and the films covered was 1968 Rape Of The Vampire, 1973 Iron Rose, 1978 Grapes Of Death and 1979 Fascination. These four films will help shed a little light on Jean Rollins career in cinema. We also have You the listeners voicemails are awesome as well. Bryan and Dave go Belgian this week for a look at the extremely artsy vampire sleeper, Daughters of Darkness. Where Jess Franco and Jean Rollin both released signature lesbian vampire movies in 1971, Harry Kumel snuck in and delivered his own interpretation of sleazy euro-trash horror through the lens of The French New Wave. The film stars the absolutely radiant Delphine Seyrig and her many outrageous costumes. We break down the film's attempt to make a statement about the gender dynamics between men and women in a patriarchy and Dave goes to great lengths to illustrate the ways in which gay women are treated differently than gay men. In the process you get a crash course in radical feminism and, more specifically, radical lesbianism and the two of us do a lot of lousy cartoonish French accents. "Lucie! Je t'aime!" The other film we discuss that involves both "pesticides" and "zombies" is the Jean Rollin flick The Grapes of Death.
French filmmaker Jean Rollin is a controversial figure in cult cinema, known for his surreal and vivid imagery as well as his strange, almost dreamlike stories. Let's dive into his body of work with one of his early forays into erotic horror and vampire movies, the 1971 'Shiver of the Vampires' (also known as 'Strange Things Happen at Night') and see what makes him so loved and hated all at the same time!
It's 1978 France and the wine has taken on a toxic zombessential quality. Great legs, though!

On this edition of Parallax Views, we take a break from current events coveage to present a Halloween Hangover episode featuring Dennis Daniel on his book The Horror! The Horror! A Film Fanatic's Obsession With the Cinema of the Macabre. A lifelong horror movie fan and monster kids, Dennis Daniel has contributed to such publications as Deep Red, Delirium, and Cinema Macabre. We end up discussing not only his lifetime love of horror but also the underground tape trading culture of the pre-DVD/Bluray era, the role Dennis played in a fiasco where Charlie Sheen mistook an underground Japanese horror movie for a snuff film, the poetic horror of French filmmaker Jean Rollin, the schlock-tastic Italian cinema of Bruno Mattei, the wild and weird world of Jess Franco films and his muse Lina Romay, the 1930s adaptation of Frankenstein starring Boris Karloff as the Monster, and much, much more!
On this spooky season edition of Parallax Views, Chris Alexander of Full Moon Presents Delirium Magazine returns to discuss his new TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD homage movie SCREAM OF THE BLIND DEAD, the Euro-horror of Jess Franco and Jean Rollin, and his two new Headpress books ART! TRASH! TERROR!: ADVENTURES IN STRANGE CINEMA and CORMAN/POE: INTERVIEWS AND ESSAYS EXPLORING THE MAKING OF ROGER CORMAN'S EDGAR ALLEN POE FILMS 1960-1964. We also discuss new horror movie fare like the "revenge-o-matic" SAW X and the Australian demonic possession movie TALK TO ME. At the end we try to figure out a movie that slipped my tongue, I found out after the show that I was thinking of was Full Moon's THE PRIMEVALS. We talk the making of the Roger Corman Edgar Allen Poe movies, the use of Freudian image in Corman's Poe films, THE HAUNTED PALACE, THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM, THE HOUSE OF USHER, THE TOMB OF LIGEIA, the Corman/Poe horror-comedy THE RAVEN, the impetus behind casting Vincent Price in the Poe films, Roger Corman's dabbling in the counterculture and his LSD trip (as well as his counterculture movies like THE TRIP, BLOODY MAMA, and GA-S-S-S-S -OR- IT BECAME NECESSARY TO DESTROY THE WORLD IN ORDER TO SAVE IT), Corman's early years at American International Pictures (AIP) and how his relationship with AIP evolved over time (and where it fell apart), Roger Corman's wife Julie Corman and her contributions to the Corman movie machine, the Vatican's attempts to censor Corman's THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH, and much, much more!
The month of Halloween is almost over but studios are still putting out the spooky stuff on this week's edition of physical media talk with Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski. Criterion has one of the great modern haunted house tales with one of Nicole Kidman's best performances. Brett Ratner tries to remake Michael Mann, Lewis Teague does his first Stephen King and Roland Emmerich completely botches Godzilla. Paramount has a whole box set of frights with some 4K debuts including a surprise title that really gets under Peter's skin. Indicator has some Jean Rollin and a box set of film noir. There is more Shaw Brothers, Sammo Hung, Mario Bava and, naturally, Bill Haley and the Comets. Plus the one thing that every show, big and small, needs – Muppets! 0:00 - Intro 0:59 - Criterion (The Others (4K)) 7:43 - Arrow Films (The Iron-Fisted Monk) 9:51 - Shout! There is no disagreement that the new work from Nicole Holofcener is worth grabbing. Horror fans get works from Lucio Fulci, Jean Rollin and Michael Crichton. Ralph Bakshi finally gets a Blu-ray release for his animated musical ode and you can also see Louis Malle's controversial film with Brooke Shields and where that George C. Scott meme comes from courtesy of Paul Schrader. 0:00 - Intro 0:59 - Arrow Films (Weird Science (4K)) 15:25 - Cauldron Films (City of the Living Dead (4K)) 23:55 - Indicator (The Night of the Hunted, The Rape of the Vampire) 34:34 - Sony (American Pop) 43:33 - Universal (Elizabeth (4K), Promising Young Woman (4K)) Shout! This week Drusilla and Josh are joined by the legendary Steak Mtn aka Christopher Norris. Steak Mtn is the graphic designer behind legendary punk bands like Against Me! and others and is the author of Hunchback '88. He's also a hardcore punk musician and sometimes porn director. Steak brought the gang Jean Rollin's Lips of Blood. From Wikipedia: "Lèvres de Sang (English: Lips of Blood) is a 1975 French horror film directed by Jean Rollin. The film tells the story of a man who begins to have visions of a young woman dressed in white who is locked behind the gates of a château.[1][2] The director was "forced" to shoot the hardcore version as well under the title Suce Moi Vampire.[3]"But first! Black Phone, the theaters of New York City, Belladonna of Sadness, X, and Ti West, the remakes of the 2000s, Ticket of No Return and Ulrike Ottinger. Movies getting porn films wrong. Then the gang gets into the feature and the work of Jean Rollin, who made tons of erotic horror movies in the 70s as well as hardcore porn. Steak Mtn saw these in the 90s and they struck a chord with him. Josh loves that this begins at a perfume launch party and how pretentious it is. Goofy fangs. How much of the movie is just vampires walking? A lot! And so what. Drusilla compares it to the Spanish film Count Dracula's Great Love. The movie has a secret cabal storyline that's a little weird, but it has great weird interiors, too, so it evens out. Dario Argento comes up a lot. There's a Jean Rollin film INSIDE this Jean Rollin film. The ending is so beautiful and romantic. But is it incest? Next week's movie is a Polish mermaid horror musical, The Lure. While the claws aren't out yet this season yet, the fangs are this week as the ten remaining monsters transform into Vampire Queens. Ironically, the king of the room rules this challenge, but Hollow's confidence and worm reveals also take a bite out of the challenge.
