June 16, 2008... the last day two-year-old Caylee Anthony is seen alive. One month later her grandmother Cindy Anthony franticly calls 911 to report her granddaughter is missing. Casey Anthony claims that a babysitter kidnapped her daughter. By October when nothing Casey tells police turns out to be true, she is arrested and charged in Caylee's death, even though Caylee is still missing. On December 11th, Caylee's remains are found in a garbage bag, dumped in a wooded area near the Anthony home. Eight days later, Caylee's death is ruled a homicide.  Prosecutors announce they will seek the death penalty against her. On July 15, 2008, she was reported missing in a 9-1-1 call made by Cindy, who said she had not seen Caylee for 31 days and that Casey's car smelled like a dead body had been inside it. Cindy said Casey had given varied explanations as to Caylee's whereabouts before finally telling her that she had not seen Caylee for weeks. Casey lied to detectives, telling them Caylee had been kidnapped by a nanny on June 9, and that she had been trying to find her, too frightened to alert the authorities.[3] She was charged with first-degree murder in October 2008 and pleaded not guilty.On December 11, 2008, two-year-old Caylee's skeletal remains were found with a blanket inside a laundry bag in a wooded area near the Anthony family's house. Investigative reports and trial testimony varied between duct tape being found near the front of the skull and on the mouth of the skull. The medical examiner mentioned duct tape as one reason she determined the death was a homicide, while the cause of death was listed as "death by undetermined means".The trial lasted six weeks, from May to July 2011. The prosecution sought the death penalty and alleged Casey wished to free herself from parental responsibilities and murdered her daughter by administering chloroform and applying duct tape. The defense team, led by Jose Baez, countered that the child had drowned accidentally in the family's swimming pool on June 16, 2008, and that George Anthony disposed of the body. The defense contended that Casey lied about this and other issues because of a dysfunctional upbringing, which they said included sexual abuse by her father. Cindy Anthony’s 911 call in the summer of 2008 was as upsetting as it was chilling. She said her granddaughter, three-year-old Caylee Anthony had been missing for 31 days. Her daughter Casey Anthony had also been missing, but now she was back — and her car smelled like it’d held a dead body. Police rushed to the scene to interview 22-year-old Casey. But Casey’s story was odd. She claimed her daughter had been kidnapped, and that she’d been trying to find Caylee on her own. Police quickly caught Casey in a string of lies. She was eventually charged in her daughter’s death. Then Kristin tells us about Dr. Linda Hazzard. Well, Dr. Hazzard wasn’t really a doctor, but thanks to a handy loophole, Linda was able to call herself one. In the early 1900’s she made a name for herself by championing the benefits of fasting. She even created a sanitarium called Wilderness Heights, where her wealthy patients endured lengthy fasts, enemas, and violent massages. But locals soon dubbed the sanitarium “Starvation Heights.” Linda’s methods killed several patients, but not before they signed over their valuables.   And now for a note about our process. On June 16, 2008, Casey Anthony left her parents’ home in Orlando, Florida with her daughter, Caylee.  Caylee’s grandfather, George, was the last person, other than Casey, to see her alive.  For 31 days, Casey lied to her mother about where she and Caylee were, who they were with and what they were doing.  On July 15, 2008, Cindy Anthony tracked her daughter down and demanded that Casey take her to Caylee.  Eventually, Casey told her brother that Caylee had been kidnaped by a fictional “nanny.”  In response to Cindy Anthony’s frantic call, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department began their investigation by taking Casey around Orlando to places she claimed the babysitter had lived.  The next day, investigators returned, bringing Casey to her office at Universal Studios.  After leading investigators on a second wild goose chase, Casey finally admitted that she hadn’t worked there since shortly after Caylee’s birth in 2005.  In spite of blunt statements from investigators, Casey continued telling the kidnaping story.  She was arrested and jailed, yet continued claiming that her daughter had been kidnaped by a non-existent “nanny.”  When Caylee’s body was found in December, 2008 in a wooded area a half mile from the Anthony residence, Casey was charged with first degree murder.  Join Lisa O’Brien and Michael Carnahan on Tuesday, August 21, 2018, at 8:00 p.m. Central for a discussion of the facts surrounding Caylee’s disappearance, the evidence against Casey Anthony, the controversial verdict that resulted in her acquittal of all charges arising from Caylee’s death and the change in the law in Florida and other states that were spurred by this tragedy.

Casey Anthony appears to blame her parents — specifically her father — for the death of her two-year-old daughter in a new interview with the Associated Press. She tells the AP reporter that she doesn’t know what happened to Caylee, but that the child was in the care of her parents. The 2011 Casey Anthony trial became the most sensational news story of the year. Time magazine called it the social media trial of the century. The 22-year-old single mom was charged with three felonies including first degree murder, aggravated child abuse and manslaughter. When pictures surfaced on the internet showing her at a nightclub shortly after her two-year-old daughter, Caylee, went missing, the media and public went ballistic. Thirty-one days passed after Caylee disappeared before police were notified and then it was not mother Casey, but her family that called police and they were pointing fingers at her.  The trial resembled in many ways the Roman Colosseum, where crowds thirsted to see lions devour the captured prisoner. Internet blogs exploded, just as the Roman crowds must have, with demands for execution. The trial's streaming videos and interactive blogs left the public demanding to see an embodiment of Caesar give his final “thumbs down” against their prize. The trial jury was another matter. Jurors cried as the evidence against her was so thin they had no choice but to find her "not guilty."  Almost unnoticed, a few leading journalists protested the media carnival that became the Casey Anthony trial. They objected to the one-sided narrative informing the court of public opinion forgetting there is a difference between someone appearing guilty and the requirement that prosecutors need to prove in court. The media‘s coverage is something we should discuss beginning with: Did police arrest the wrong person? Was the jury right deciding Casey Anthony was "not guilty"?  Was Casey's mother involved in a coverup of a crime aganst Caylee? Who was Cindy protecting, Casey or her husband, George?
