This week Mickey-Jo headed to the Lyric Hammersmith in London to see GHOSTS, Gary Owen's new contemporary adaptation of the classic Henrik Ibsen play. In this new updated version, Victoria Smurfit stars as Helena Alving alongside Callum Scott Howells as her son Oz. This world premiere production re-situates this classic story into the modern day, and follows in the footsteps of similarly re-lensed classics in the Lyric's recent history including A Doll's House and Accidental Death of an Anarchist. Check out this full review to find out what Mickey-Jo thought of this play as a piece, its themes, and its relationship to the original text...• 00:00 | introduction 02:00 | adaptation 08:21 | overview / themes 14:32 | the writing 19:08 | performances•About Mickey-Jo:As one of the leading voices in theatre criticism on a social platform, Mickey-Jo is pioneering a new medium for a dwindling field. Cast members Tom, Tim and Megs are interviewed by Cait, for the brilliant Putney Theatre Production of Accidental Death of an Anarchist by Dario Fo and Franca Rame, adapted by Tom Basden. Directed by Barney Hart Dyke and Owen Thomas James. An irrepressible fraudster known only as the Maniac is brought into Police Headquarters just as the officers are preparing for a judicial review of the recent 'accidental' death of a suspect in custody. Outwitting his captors, the Maniac dupes them into performing a farcical recreation of the incident, exposing the absurd corruption and terrifying idiocy at the heart of the system.Dario Fo and Franca Rame's riotous satire has been widely performed around the world since its premiere in 1970. Tom Basden's acclaimed adaptation was first performed in 2022 (starring Daniel Rigby as the Maniac), transferring first to the Lyric in 2023 before moving to the West End.Reviews of the original production'A glorious comedy that leaps off the stage' – The Times. December 31st: Rod Covlin Kills (2009) Sometimes, when a crime scene seems off, there is good reason to have a second look at a case. On December 31st 2009 a woman was found dead in her apartment and, though it would take a decade to finally get some answers, a second look at the case proved invaluable. https://www.distractify.com/p/what-happened-to-shele-danishefsky-covlin, https://www.the-sun.com/news/7241286/where-rod-covlin-now-shele-danishefsky/, https://www.oxygen.com/dateline-secrets-uncovered/crime-news/rod-covlin-convicted-of-killing-wife-shele-danishefsky, https://www.sportskeeda.com/pop-culture/dateline-secrets-uncovered-how-rod-covlin-try-frame-nine-year-old-daughter-estranged-wife-s-death, https://thecinemaholic.com/rod-covlin-now/, https://www.the-sun.com/news/7241286/where-rod-covlin-now-shele-danishefsky/ Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, I explore the complexities of subconscious influence in our lives, motivated by a listener's unsettling experience with a car crash. I discuss the possibility of our subconscious leading us toward self-destructive paths as a way to escape toxic relationships. Through personal anecdotes, I reflect on the role of serendipity in shaping our destinies and the often unseen connections that drive significant life changes.Additionally, I analyze how personal injuries can reveal the depth of care from others, illustrating the dynamics of give-and-take in relationships. I address a listener's dream about mourning a brother, unpacking the symbolic nature of death and its relation to oppressive family dynamics and free will. Ultimately, I emphasize the importance of higher moral standards in guiding our lives and relationships, highlighting the critical role of conscious choice and self-reflection in navigating our journeys.GET MY NEW BOOK 'PEACEFUL PARENTING', THE INTERACTIVE PEACEFUL PARENTING AI, AND AUDIOBOOK!https://peacefulparenting.com/Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free! Also get the Truth About the French Revolution, multiple interactive multi-lingual philosophy AIs trained on thousands of hours of my material, as well as targeted AIs for Real-Time Relationships, BitCoin, Peaceful Parenting, and Call-Ins. Our bodies are on the ballot, and our choice are on the line. In this episode, right before the US presidential election, we discuss one of the most pressing issues in Canada and the US: women's bodies and the right to choose. We sit down to discuss this issue with the Leader of the New Democratic Party, Jagmeet Singh. Some might think it is a silly choice on our behalf to speak to a man about abortion rights---but this is purposeful. Men need to speak out and stand in solidarity with us, be allies and agents of disruption in the face of other men who are trying to suppress our voices. And Canada, think again if you think we cannot lose our rights here--The CPC has proposed many anti-choice bills. We say for Canada too, "We will not go back"! AP correspondent Norman Hall reports a Michigan gun owner has been sent to prison for the accidental death of his grandson.
In this episode, the Gritty Nurses talk about the concerning increase in cyberattacks on hospitals in recent years. Ascension, one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the nation, was hit by a ransomware attack in May 2024 (right around nurses week). Affected were no less than 12 states, over a period of 36 days. Cyber attacks have increased by 128% from 2022-2023. They discuss safety issues when EMR charting is down, how we can better prepare, how much we should rely on paper charting. Technology can be a double edged sword. Summary: Personal Experience and Faith: Leah shares her personal journey through multiple hardships, including the loss of her house, her son's addiction, and her mother's cancer. She emphasizes how these experiences have deepened her intimacy with God and strengthened her faith. Permission to Feel and Wrestle with God: The discussion touches on the importance of embracing emotions and being transparent with God. Leah explains that acknowledging and wrestling with feelings of grief and suffering can lead to experiencing God's peace and presence more profoundly. Community and Support: Leah highlights the significance of community support during times of grief. She shares examples from her own life where friends and community members provided crucial support, reinforcing the idea that healing often involves others helping to "unravel our grave clothes." Message of Hope and Redemption**: Throughout the conversation, Leah and Speaker 1 underscore the message of hope in Christ. They stress that while grief and suffering are inevitable, turning towards God and trusting in His plan of redemption can lead to healing and transformation. Podcast Intro: My guest is Lea Turner, a wife, a mom to 5 children, she's an author and a grief coach. When you hear just a little bit of her story today, you'll see how much experience she's had in the area of grief and it will explain why she's the perfect one to come alongside grieving hearts and help them navigate the seasons of life when we live with loss and uncertainty. A quick overview of her grief journeys (with an S - plural)…within a very short time period of 3 years it included death, cancer, a house fire where she and her family lost absolutely everything include the family dog), her son battling addiction, shattered dreams, heart surgery…and just recently her mom's cancer journey has shifted and is adding yet more uncertainty for the days ahead. Our conversation focuses on Lea's book, The Freedom to Feel: Finding God in Grief and Trauma, Her book goes into greater depth with regard to what we discussed plus additional topics that we didn't have time to discuss. I really picked around in Lea's pain and she was gracious enough to answer every question. She explains how her relationship with God has evolved through each season of loss, emphasizing the importance of building a foundation with God to weather difficult times. She shares a story about a pastor's advice that spending time with God is preparation for future hardships. Lea highlights the importance of embracing feelings of grief and suffering rather than running from them and she explains that acknowledging and feeling pain allows the Holy Spirit to provide comfort, contrasting this with numbing behaviors like alcohol or excessive activities. She also discusses the importance of not becoming a victim of grief, suggesting that continually dwelling on hard stories can trap a person in their suffering. Instead, she recommends balancing necessary daily responsibilities with the need to process emotions and seek God's guidance. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did as we discussed the hope and transformation that comes from a relationship with God. All that she shared is very encouraging but I especially loved the reminder when she said that as believers we lament, meaning we grieve with hope. I'd say that Leah's over all message and I whole heartedly agree with it….is the importance of continually turning towards God. Even in the midst of grief and heartache we can count on God's character and presence to remain constant through every crashing wave of any storm we endure. Let's listen in for encouragement and a reminder that God has a plan of redemption for every form of suffering they endure. Have you heard that all nurses aren't made the same? That some are Registered Nurses and others are Registered Practical Nurses or Licensed Practical Nurses? Did you know that even within nursing, we create categories of who is "really" a nurse? Let's cut the bullshi*t, shall we? In this episode, the Gritty Nurses talk about registered practical nurses (RPNs) with none other than Dianne Martin, CEO of WeRPN. We discuss what RPNs can do, common misconceptions, and raising awareness and improving working conditions, and her hopes and aspirations for RPNs. After all, if nurse is in your title, you're a nurse. Dianne Martin has been a nurse since 1979. She graduated first as an RPN and then in 1998, she graduated as an RN with a diploma in nursing and is dually registered as both an RN and RPN. Currently she works as an RPN in the role of Chief Executive Officer of WeRPN where she has been recognized for her work to build bridges of greater understanding and respect among the categories of nurses in Ontario. Dianne has experience working in several Ontario hospitals predominantly in the field of Perinatal Care. She has held several leadership positions including professional practice coordinator in an Ontario hospital and senior policy analyst with the Nursing Policy and Innovation Branch of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (formerly The Nursing Secretariat). In 2016, Dianne received the Premier's Award which recognizes college graduates whose achievements have made a difference in the province of Ontario. She is the daughter of a nurse, mother to a nurse, and she holds all those who care for others in the highest regard. Thank you to our episode sponsor, healthcareproviders.ca! DON'T FORGET TO LEAVE US A RATING AND REVIEW!Positional asphyxia. How common is this cause of death? Have you ever heard of it in a true crime case? Is it is possible that a 17 year old boy could die this way by crawling into a rolled up gym mat? OR is is possible that this is a story that is stemmed in racial injustice, lead by an FBI agent who covered up evidence and committed by two teenage boys that went to the same high school as this victim? Is this a case of police and government conspiracy to committ murder, or is this just a tragic story of an accidental death that no one could have predicted? In this episode, The Gritty Nurses and Nurse Matthew discuss two juxtaposing cases: first of a nurse who uploaded a video showing her at a strip club before her shift and a horrifying case of a nurse who fell asleep in her car and then accidentally drove off the top floor of a parking garage. We discuss both cases, the circumstances around each, the "upload/pick me" culture and how common falling asleep while driving among shift workers are. Details of Case 2: "I was so exhausted..." A Boston nurse was injured after driving off the top floor of a parking garage. Authorities responded to the incident at Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain, according to a police report from the Boston Police Department. Responding officers found a “heavily damaged” 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee next to the garage, as well as a piece of railing that appeared to match the railing on the garage's roof. Boston fire officials reportedly informed police that a vehicle had plunged off the top of the parking garage, though it was unclear how. In this episode, the Gritty Nurses discuss something that would be a patient's worst nightmare: having a medical instrument left in your body. In this particular instance, an epidural needle was left in Giovanna Ippolito's back from years ago! Furthermore, no one will take responsibility for it. Amie & Sara unpack some of the issues in hospitals related to medical malpractice, patient advocacy and glaring gaps in the healthcare system. Giovanna Ippolito is living with a broken needle in her spine after it broke off during childbirth. An anesthesiologist then left the 4cm/2 inch-long fragment embedded in her back — and didn't tell her what happened. Instead, it was discovered during an X-ray more than a decade later. The woman says her doctor can't directly link the pain she's experiencing to the needle, but one thing has been made clear to her: it's not safe to remove it. Right now, across Canada and the US, patients are not receiving the care they deserve because nurses continue to work with fewer resources. Nurses have stated, time and time again, that patients are getting sicker, are more complex and require more dedicated attention to their care. The evidence is clear--staffing ratios protect patients, support nurses to do the work required and improve better outcomes. Why is it that the only thing that seems to matter in traditional nursing is seniority? Ask a nurse, any nurse to tell you about themselves and they will start by saying how long they've worked. While the rest of the world focuses on performance and skills, nursing somehow seems stuck on where you are on the seniority list. Does seniority have a role in nurses eating their young? Or are times changing? Listen and see what The Gritty Nurses think. Thank you to our episode sponsor, healthcareproviders.ca! Attention, hospital employees, retirees and HR in Canada! Contact Amy Contact Jennifer The raw emotion of heartbreak and the quest for healing takes center stage as Jennifer Eikenhorst joins me on 'Wednesdays with the Watson.' Jennifer's story is a tapestry of pain and faith, woven together on an ordinary day that escalated into a life-altering tragedy. As she recounts the accident that took the life of David, a beloved veteran, and father, we are reminded of the overwhelming weight of grief and the responsibility one carries after such an event. Through tears and courage, she shares how this experience became the fulcrum of her faith, testing its strength and resilience. Struggle and spirituality collide in our intimate conversation about the role of faith through life's most trying moments. As we navigate the tumultuous emotions that come with feeling forsaken, from anger to surrender, we acknowledge that faith is not immune to questions and doubts. Yet, it is also in these moments that we find the potential for profound growth as we learn to differentiate between our humanity and our purpose. This episode is more than just a recounting of sorrow; it's a journey toward understanding and compassion. Jennifer's creation of 'Accidental Hope' and the process behind her memoir is a testament to the redemptive power of sharing one's story. To all listeners bearing the heavy mantle of tragedy, know this is a space of support and love. As we close, I extend an invitation to embrace the greater narrative of your life, with faith as the guide, offering solace and transformation in the wake of life's storms You ARE:SEEN KNOWN HEARD LOVED VALUED
Trigger Warning: loss, suicidal ideation Jennifer is a wife, mother of four, and an educator who is passionate about helping struggling students. One evening on a routine run to pick up her child, she collides with a motorcyclist. Despite her desperate prayers and efforts made, he passes away. Everything begins to unravel and life as she knew it was falling apart, her identity, faith and mental health. She battles the voices of guilt and whispers of shame and countless questions without hope of answers on this side of heaven. In this episode Jennifer shares: A bit of her faith walk The night of the accident and praying for a miracle The unimaginable loss, shock and facing the possibility of prison Her rock solid faith being shaken for the first time How God moved through people and circumstances A vision in a church service God gave her of David in heaven and a word from God Fully surrendering her fate and trusting it to God before her court decision Learning about "cities of refuge" found in the Bible Being called to share her testimony for the first time and its effect Being led to serve in a ministry to help others who are seeking hope after causing accidental death or injury "I will tell you, in those darkest, scariest places, have hope for the day because God has a plan. The work done on the cross was meant for you too. That there is nothing, absolutely nothing, that can separate you from the love of God that he is in complete control. He will give you perfect peace and if you trust him, he will make those things work out for good." -Jen Eikenhorst In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God's people in accordance with the will of God. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
