Video version available on HCPLive! In this episode of New Insight, host Veeral Sheth, MD, MBA, director of clinical research at University Retina and Macula Associates, speaks with Riad Sherif, MD, chief executive officer of Oculis, about the company's groundbreaking advancements in ophthalmic therapeutics. The discussion delves into Oculis' clinical pipeline, particularly OCS-05, a neuroprotective agent demonstrating promising results in acute optic neuritis. The Phase 2 ACUITY trial showed that OCS-05 preserved retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), reduced axonal loss, and improved low-contrast visual acuity. Importantly, patients receiving OCS-05 experienced significantly fewer multiple sclerosis relapses, suggesting broader neuroprotective potential. Administered intravenously alongside corticosteroids, the therapy could represent a paradigm shift in preserving vision in acute optic neuritis and beyond. Sheth and Sherif also explore Oculis' lead candidate, OCS-01, a topical treatment for diabetic macular edema (DME) that utilizes Optireach™ technology to penetrate the retina. With two ongoing Phase 3 trials (DIAMOND 1 and 2), OCS-01 has the potential to offer a non-invasive alternative or adjunct to intravitreal injections, expanding treatment options for patients with DME. Additionally, Oculis' OCS-02, a TNF inhibitor for dry eye disease, integrates a biomarker-driven precision medicine approach, ensuring targeted therapy for responders and potentially revolutionizing dry eye treatment. Looking ahead, Oculis is focused on executing its clinical programs, particularly finalizing patient randomization in the DIAMOND trials, advancing precision medicine for inflammation, and expanding indications for OCS-05 in neuroprotection. Sherif envisions OCS-05 as a potential game-changer, addressing significant unmet needs in ophthalmology and neurology by preserving vision and improving quality of life for patients facing vision-threatening diseases. Stress hormones are released immediately during challenging situations, making stress a significant yet subjective experience. These stress hormones increase insulin resistance & cause hyperglycemia unlike physical weight, stress cannot be quantified—it varies for everyone, making it a deeply personal phenomenon. Uncontrolled blood sugar can lead to complications like early-onset cataracts, often appearing as early as 45 or 50, especially in diabetics. Retinal issues and glaucoma are also common, emphasizing the need for annual eye exams. People with Diabetes should inform their doctors and prioritize regular evaluations to detect and manage potential eye complications effectively. Awareness promoted by the government and media highlights the importance of vaccinations. A disease Herpes zoster or shingles can affect individuals with diabetes. This virus resides in everyone but becomes active when the immune system weakens. Fortunately, a vaccine with 90% efficacy is available for those over 50. Administered in two doses, the first dose is followed by the second after two months, within a six-month window. Adult vaccination schedules should include common vaccines such as hepatitis B, pneumococcal, influenza, and herpes zoster. Evaluations for neuropathy (nerve damage) and vasculopathy (blood vessel damage) are also critical. Neuropathy affects nerves, while vasculopathy leads to arterial damage. Dr. Kavita Gupta advises caution during fasting, as starchy foods like potatoes and sabudana can spike blood sugar levels. Instead, opt for foods with a low glycemic index to avoid sugar surges. Increase fiber intake while avoiding sugar and jaggery. Common fasting foods like halwa, sago vada, and khichdi can elevate sugar levels. A better alternative is incorporating salads, roasted chickpeas, lemon water, small amounts of coconut water, or fresh coconut. Bhagar (a low glycemic index grain) combined with vegetables like tomatoes, peas, and carrots is beneficial. Including protein and lean meat can further improve dietary balance. The Florida Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan Program is a state-funded short-term loan program that provides immediate, temporary assistance to small businesses impacted by a disaster, such as hurricanes, floods, or other emergencies. Administered by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO), the program is designed to "bridge the gap" by offering quick financial relief to small businesses until longer-term resources, such as insurance claims or federal disaster assistance, are available.Key FeaturesLoan Amount: Loans typically range from $1,000 to $50,000, although this can vary depending on the specific disaster and available funding.Interest Rate: These loans are interest-free for a specified term, usually for up to one year. After this period, if the loan is not repaid, a fixed interest rate might apply.Repayment Terms: This is a short-term loan, usually requiring repayment within 12 months. It's not intended as a long-term solution but rather as a bridge to keep businesses operational while they secure additional funds.Eligibility Requirements:Business must be physically located in Florida.Must have been operational at the time of the disaster.Typically, there are size limitations (e.g., fewer than 100 employees).Must show evidence of economic injury from the specific disaster.Application Process:Applications are submitted through the DEO.In some cases, additional documentation (e.g., tax returns, financial statements) may be required.Approval Timeline: Designed for rapid deployment, with approvals and disbursements generally processed as quickly as possible to support immediate needs. How to ApplyEligible small businesses can apply online through the DEO's website during an active application period, which usually opens after a disaster declaration. It's a first-come, first-served program, meaning that funding could be exhausted, so early application is encouraged. For more detailed information, including current application deadlines, visit the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity's website or contact them directly.Call 1-833-832-4494 EmergencyBridgeLoan@Commerce.fl.govhttp://www.floridajobs.org/EBLTune in and learn https://www.ddamortgage.com/blogdidier malagies nmls#212566dda mortgage nmls#324329 Support the show

Interview with Rinki Agarwal, MD
Jim's life as an alcoholic began with an addiction to morphine when he was 14. Administered four times a day while he was hospitalized for a month after a serious surgery, Jim found that morphine did more than kill the pain. It helped him escape the mental tribulations he felt from childhood on. But morphine was difficult to get and he soon found that increasing amounts of alcohol was would have largely the same results. So, he didn't stop drinking or using drugs until he was 46. Jim's life prior to sobriety was the familiar odyssey of drinking and drug use, to which so many alcoholics in AA can relate. But the biggest challenges and threats to his sobriety occurred after he had joined AA. At 13 months sober, his wife of 17 years was found dead from a drug overdose suicide. At nearly 4 years sober, a drunk driver caused a near fatal motorcycle accident for Jim that landed him in the hospital for 3½ months of multiple surgeries for shattered bones and brain injury. Released to a life of chronic pain, he also lost his beloved career as a symphonic musician. Later on in his sobriety, Jim lost his best friend to suicide. More recently, as the only child, Jim has been caring for his 91 year old mother who's been very sick. Handling the tragedies that have befallen him during sobriety, as well as the gifts that have come from it, Jim has stayed firmly planted in the action part of his AA Program. Sponsoring other men and ceaseless service have never failed to improve the quality of his sobriety no matter what he faces in life. Jim's story is both courageous and captivating. It provides a roadmap for navigating troubled times and an inspiring optimism for living a happy life in midst of Alcoholics Anonymous. So please enjoy this episode of AA Recovery Interviews with my fine friend and AA brother, Jim D. [This is an encore of Episode 65, originally released February 16, 2022]. If you've enjoyed my AA Recovery Interviews series and my Big Book Podcast, have a listen to Lost Stories of the Big Book, 30 Original Stories Missing from the 3rd and 4th Editions of Alcoholics Anonymous. It's an engaging audiobook I narrated to bring these stories to life for AA members who've never seen them. These timeless testimonials were originally cut to make room for newer stories in the 3rd and 4th Editions. But their vitally important messages of hope are as meaningful today as when they were first published. Many listeners will hear these stories for the first time. We hear about 2 products that many have heard of and are using, MultiMin and Lactipro from Axiota. Plus we have market information, cattle for sale and lots more all wrapped into this all new episode of the Ranch It Up Radio Show. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 191 DETAILS HOW TO USE MULTIMIN & LACTIPRO. Your Best Shot at Strategic Trace Mineral Supplementation for Cattle Supports Cattle Health and Reproduction Multimin® 90 is a unique injectable solution containing zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium, proven to support cattle health and reproduction. Research shows that strategic trace mineral supplementation enhances breeding success, healthy calving, and improved immunity. Successful Breeding Using Multimin 90 improves trace mineral status in breeding stock, leading to more calves in fewer days. Healthy Calving Third-trimester injections improve cow-to-calf trace mineral transfer and colostrum quality, especially when used with a scours vaccine. Enhanced Immunity Multimin 90 boosts vaccine protection and strengthens the immune response when integrated into a vaccination protocol. Why Is Trace Mineral Supplementation Necessary? Inadequate trace mineral status in cattle can lead to suppressed immune function, lower fertility, and decreased growth. Oral nutrition programs face challenges such as: Antagonists in water/feed binding minerals in the rumen, limiting absorption Variation in intake among cattle Increased mineral demand during stressful events, which oral minerals cannot quickly meet How Does Multimin 90 Work? Multimin 90 complements an oral nutrition program by rapidly increasing zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium levels in cattle during high-demand periods. Administered via subcutaneous injection, it reaches peak levels in the blood within 8-10 hours and is stored in the liver for later use. Benefits of Strategic Supplementation with Multimin 90 Rapid peak plasma levels within 8-10 hours Bypasses rumen antagonists Ensures consistent supplementation for every animal injected Can be used during high-demand periods like calving, breeding, vaccination, and transportation When to Use Multimin 90 Cows and Heifers Last trimester of pregnancy 30 days pre-breeding or at CIDR insertion (11 days before AI) Bulls Weaning 90 days post-weaning 45-60 days prior to breeding season Calves Branding/first vaccination Weaning/preconditioning Stockers At processing How to Use Multimin 90 Consult your veterinarian and follow label directions. Multimin 90 has a 14-day pre-slaughter withdrawal and 0-day milk withdrawal. Calculate the correct dosage based on the animal's weight. Maximum volume per injection site is 7 mL. Follow Beef Quality Assurance guidelines for proper subcutaneous injections. By strategically using Multimin 90, cattle producers can enhance herd health, reproduction, and immunity, leading to better productivity and success. IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION FOR MULTIMIN® 90: Not for use in humans, keep out of reach of children. Multimin 90 has a pre-slaughter withdrawal time of 14 days after injection. Do not use it during the first trimester of pregnancy or in pre-ruminant calves as safety has not been established. Selenium and copper are toxic if administered in excess and may lead to sudden death, depression, weakness, ataxia, salivation, and drooling. Do not use concurrently with other selenium or copper injections or boluses. Maximum volume per injection site is 7 mL. Allow a minimum of 30 days before considering repeat dosing. See prescribing information. Introduction to Lactipro® Lactipro® is a rumen-native probiotic containing a live, stable strain of Megasphaera elsdenii (Mega e®), an effective lactic acid utilizer. It helps cattle producers maintain healthy rumen pH and improve profitability by accelerating finishing diets and reducing post-terminal processing mortality. Key Benefits of Lactipro® Shortens step-up period by 50% or more Reduces post-terminal processing performance losses Supports rumen health in hospital cattle Lactipro® promotes rumen health during transitions to higher-grain diets, grazing crop residue, and as bulls move to higher energy diets during development. How Does Lactipro® Work? Naturally occurring Mega e takes weeks to handle grain-based diets effectively. Fast-growing bacteria produce excessive lactic acid, lowering rumen pH and causing health issues like acidosis. Lactipro® introduces Mega e directly into the rumen, consuming lactic acid and producing butyric acid, which promotes cell growth and better VFA absorption. The Importance of Mega e Strain MS Biotec's patented Mega e strain is selected for its: Rapid growth and resilience Production of butyric acid Compatibility with feed additives Enhanced rumen fermentation with other microbials Two Formulations of Lactipro® LactiproNXT® An easy-to-use drench available in 200 mL and 1,000 mL pouches, ideal for processing multiple cattle. LactiproFLX® A small capsule in a 25-capsule resealable pouch, perfect for individual animals or small groups. Administration Both formulations provide equal bacterial counts and are effective, with an extended shelf life requiring refrigeration. LactiproFLX comes in three types: Dairy – for beef cows Feedlot – for feedlot cattle and developing bulls Calf – for young calves Use Cases Accelerated Step-Up Shortens step-up period by 50% or more for a faster diet transition. Terminal Processing Reduces post-terminal processing performance losses. Other Use Cases Supports rumen health during diet transitions, grazing, and bull development phases. Integrating Lactipro® ensures a healthier rumen, leading to better overall cattle health and profitability. Clay Jenkinson joins his friend Dennis McKenna in Chaco Canyon in northwestern New Mexico to observe the solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. Chaco Canyon dates to at least the ninth century CE, more than a thousand years ago, and somehow their skywatchers know how to observe equinoxes, solstices, and eclipses. What better place to see the solar eclipse of 2024? Administered by the US National Park System, but interpreted for us by a Native Navajo and Zia expert Kailo Winters, it was a magical experience in a sacred place. We came away impressed by the capacity of the European Enlightenment to figure all of this out, but far more in awe of the Puebloan scholars who figured such phenomena out centuries before European science was out of its swaddling clothes. We also check in with our favorite Enlightenment correspondent David Nicandri.
In this episode of Pekingology, Freeman Chair in China Studies Jude Blanchette is joined by Chenggang Xu, Senior Research Scholar at the Stanford Center on China's Economy and Institutions and Visiting Fellow at Hoover Institution of Stanford University to discuss the institutional underpinnings of China's political economy. What explains the Communist Party's ongoing resilience? Why did China pivot away from the economic reforms that had generated so much wealth for the country and the government? Xu advances the framework of “Regionally Administered Totalitarianism” (RADT) to describe China's political economic transition during the reform period. He is also author of the forthcoming book Institutional Genes: The Origins of China's Institutions and Totalitarianism (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming) exploring these questions.
In this episode, Holly talks about a new program she is helping head, whose goal is to provide treatment to patients suffering from opioid addiction.

June 16, 2008... the last day two-year-old Caylee Anthony is seen alive. One month later her grandmother Cindy Anthony franticly calls 911 to report her granddaughter is missing. Casey Anthony claims that a babysitter kidnapped her daughter. By October when nothing Casey tells police turns out to be true, she is arrested and charged in Caylee's death, even though Caylee is still missing. On December 11th, Caylee's remains are found in a garbage bag, dumped in a wooded area near the Anthony home. Eight days later, Caylee's death is ruled a homicide. Prosecutors announce they will seek the death penalty against her. At Casey Anthony's trial, her lawyer first makes clams that George Anthony was molesting his daughter and that he staged Caylee's death to look like a drowning to cover up that he may have been abusing his granddaughter as well. Those claims, made again after Casey Anthony is acquitted in the death, have haunted the Anthonys for years. Now, George and Cindy Anthony agree to take a lie detector test in front of cameras for the A&E network special "Casey Anthony's Parents: The Lie Detector Test." Now that Alex Murdaugh has been convicted in the murders of his wife and son, it's time to take a look back on all the pieces that had to come together for the jury to deliver that guilty verdict. Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell talk about key testimony in the case and also had a fun chat with South Carolina prosecutor Creighton Waters himself. Looking ahead, we have big plans to expand our particular style of journalism to other cases across the country — cases that would be solved if not for local corruption in law enforcement and other government agencies, but we still have a lot of work to do with this case. Over the next few months we will be redoubling our efforts into our investigation of the Stephen Smith Case. Sandy, Stephanie and the entire Smith family deserve to see justice in this case, which should have been solved in 2015. So this is a big day — we hope a new day — in South Carolina.
