On April 26, 1880, the Tombstone, Arizona, newspaper, The Epitaph, printed a startling report. According to the article, two cowboys saw a giant bird outside of town, shot it, and carried its gigantic carcass into Tombstone. How, I asked myself, could what seemed to be a prehistoric flying creature have been shot down by cowboys in the 1880s? Many of Hollywood’s older hotels are much like Hollywood itself. They are aging and slightly faded, still trying to hang onto the shimmer of glamour that they enjoyed in the days gone by. In 1959, Harold Perelson seemed to be a man with everything going for him. He had a distinguished career as a doctor, a beautiful wife, loving children, and a wonderful home in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles that was ideal for what seemed to be the perfect family. And then on the night of December 6, neighbors were awakened by the sound of Harold Perelson’s daughter, Judye, screaming and banging on their door...When the police arrived, they entered the Perelson house and found Harold’s wife, Lillian, dead in her bed and Harold himself dead from a massive drug overdose. He had apparently committed suicide. At just three minutes before midnight on March 12, 1928, the St. Francis Dam, which had been designed as a reservoir for the Los Angeles water supply by William Mulholland, suddenly failed, releasing 11 billion gallons of water into a narrow valley in northeastern Los Angeles County, destroying everything in its path.
