We're #manifesting a happy New Year's with our best influencer friend courtesy of Sophia Takal and Adam Gaines' "New Year, New You" (2018). The all-female entry of Into The Dark is all about toxic (female) friendships and anticipates a ton of 2022 "Influencer" horror titles, particularly Sissy. Plus: praise for Carly Chaikin, questions about Suki Waterhouse's career, debates about social media advertising and complaints of "wokeness", and sly commentary (maybe?) by Takal and Gaines about the importance of Black, queer and fat people in white women's stories. What one thing are you most desperate for? Is there any price for it you'd be unwilling to pay? If the path to it was before you, and a sure thing, would anything stop you from walking it? Would you be able to stop yourself, at the halfway point, if your body began to betray you? If your mind ceased to be all your own? If you were well and truly out of time? One night a year, the longest of its kind, the Uncommon Bazaar asks these questions of all who'd step within. Most ignore them, content to flit about its safe, outermost edges. But this year, this night, a Lamb, a Snake, and an Intercessor will seek the Bazaar's center. And one way or another, they will be made to answer. It's important to support the Can-Con....On this episode and in celebration of episode #400 (We Can't Believe It Either) we're diving into some cinema from a Canadian talent who is making good in Hollywood and we dive into that 'Culture Shock'.This thriller follows a young Mexican woman in pursuit of the American Dream, who crosses illegally into the United States, only to find herself in an American nightmare. As a part of the 'Into The Dark' anthology series from Blumhouse Television, this is the feature debut of our very own Gigi Saul Guerrero who has gone on to make other films like 'Bingo Hell' which is now on Prime Video with tons of other projects in development. While this has been available via Hulu with our friends to the south of us for quite some time, it's actually debuting on Hollywood Suite here in Canada, TODAY.We got to sit down with Gigi and talk about how she got the job, the importance of the story to her how she connected to it as a Mexican-Canadian,, navigating the business in LA and so very much more....

This week Mike is doing another spoiler-free book review from the High Republic era, with the final book in the second wave (of the first phase) with Out Of The Shadows by Justina Ireland – the young adult novel which is set shortly after The Rising Storm & Race to Crashpoint Tower, with a bunch of new and familiar characters from Into The Dark, A Test Of Courage and more! In more detail, Mike begins by confirming where OOTS sits in the High Republic timeline, as well as confirming what other SW content Justina Ireland has released, before providing his fully spoiler-free review of the book. Mike then reads the blurb & crawl of the book and gives his thoughts on the themes & characters (some who have appeared previously in THR) which features some minor spoilers, including some interesting lore on Hyperspace. After providing these thoughts, Mike finishes his review by providing more-detailed thoughts on the book and confirms the general plot (including the ending) of the book so any listeners who aren't going to read the book still have an idea of what happens and it's impact in the High Republic era. Do we love them, do we love them NOT? I️ think we honestly and truly want to have high hopes for all genres of horror movies, but some just don't make the cut, BUT some absolutely do. This episode we talk about "CUPID", "VALENTINE", "INTO THE DARK: ,Y VALENTINE" and the very trustworthy "MY BLOODY VALENTINE". Thankfully we watched these in ascending order so each movie kept getting gradually better. Give us suggestions in our email @ HorrorYmasPodcast@gmail.com and visit our instagram @HorrorYmas WE WILL BE RIGHT BACK!!!

This week Mike is doing another spoiler-free book review from the High Republic era, now venturing into the second wave, starting with The Rising Storm by Cavan Scott – the “main adult” novel with a huge amount of characters, major plot points and shocking moments! In more detail, for the first half of the episode, Mike gives a bit of information on the other releases for The High Republic (the first two waves within Phase 1), gives some background/plot information on the book and then delves into his spoiler-free review; providing information from the blurb, the themes, how it continues from Light Of The Jedi, what he enjoyed about it, which characters have returned and details found within the first few pages. From around the halfway mark, Mike reads out the blurb & crawl before providing more details on the characters and their general journeys/thoughts, the state of the Republic at the start of this book, the wider themes and how they impact story elements, as well as how it fits in with other High Republic material, which all falls into light-spoiler territory. He then talks about “connected content”, primarily the tie-in High Republic comics and gives a mini-review of the Tempest Runner audio drama before giving plenty of warning and delving into his more detailed review, which still doesn't fully spoil the book but it does mention some plot details right at the very end, so you can listen to as little or as much info about The Rising Storm before picking it up yourself. The Rising Storm was released June 29th 2021 by Cavan Scott. He has also written the Dooku Jedi Lost audio drama, The Tempest Runner audio drama (set just after this book), as well as one story from each A Certain Point Of View book, all of Marvel's standard The High Republic comics plus several titles under Star Wars Adventures for IDW publishing including the Monster Of Temple Peak mini-series, all 3 sets of Vader's Castle stories and Adventures In Wild Space. The Rising Storm is the adult novel of the second wave of the High Republic's first phase along with Out Of The Shadows and Race To Crashpoint Tower, while Wave 3 (due early 2022) will include Claudia Gray's “adult” novel The Fallen Star plus junior-novel Mission To Disaster and young-adult novel Midnight Horizon. From the first wave of phase 1 is Light Of The Jedi, A Test Of Courage & Into The Dark, which Mike has reviewed on this show in 2021; LotJ was March, AToC was August and ItD was October. Mike also spoke with fellow THR author Claudia Gray on December 12th 2020 on this very channel/feed, so make sure you check that out if you haven't already, plus Mike spoke with Star Wars comic artist Paolo Villanelli on the feed of his other show Genuine Chit-Chat (video version also on YouTube). Check out the last episode of SWCIC for the penultimate chapter of the War Of The Bounty Hunters crossover, Mike goes into the many plot details of the 6 comics along with many of the connections to other content and more! Hello people! We're in the home stretch of spooky season 2020 and what a way to wrap up our Halloween themed shows than with Monsters! In this episode, Heather covers the literary classic Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus, followed by Jeff who takes on Hulu original movie Good Boy, staring Judy Greer. Heather and Jeff break down the story of each piece by piece, and then share their analysis. They follow up their presentations with a conversation on “what makes a monster?”. Written in the early 1800's by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus is a gothic horror story which inspired centuries of macabre work. A truly chilling novel, Frankenstein is much different than the green skinned, flat-top character you're used to seeing every Halloween season. Heather breaks down how Mary Shelley's person hardships and grief fuel this story into something both personal and unique. Did You Know?: The concept of Frankenstein was conceived in 1817 when Mary and her husband spent the summer with Lord Byron. Good Boy is an entry of the Into The Dark series under the Blumhouse banner and exclusive to Hulu. Staring Judy Greer, good boy is about a supernatural emotional support dog named Reuben who kills those who give his owner Maggie (Played by Greer) too much anxiety. This dark comedy is carried by Greer, whose performance is both funny and a departure from what she is normally seen in. Jeff carries us through the plot of the movie & points out the dark comedy that makes this movie an entertaining afternoon watch. Fun Fact: Chico The Dog, who plays Reuben, is a Dachshund-Terrier mix. Tune in to hear Jeff and Heather's candid thoughts on the masterpiece scenes of each monster movie, how Frankensteinand Good Boy compare, and how Jeff and Heather relate to aspects of each. Share this episode with anyone who you think would enjoy it and let us know your thoughts on these monster movies!
