Author Clay McLeod Chapman has done it all.. short stories, novels, a TON of comics, and screenplays for both indie and big-name films. In this episode, we talk about his wild and winding journey through the horror genre.. from an early indie short that caught Elijah Wood's eye, to co-writing Wendell & Wild with Henry Selick and Jordan Peele, and what a chaotic, drawn-out process making a movie can really be… even when you're working with legends. Then we dive face first into Clay's newest novel Wake Up and Open Your Eyes, which hit us on a deeply personal level. It's a searing, surreal exploration of what it feels like to watch loved ones be consumed and "possessed" by extremist ideologies. We talk about the slow erosion of identity, the horror of misinformation, and how fiction can humanize without excusing. It's honest, emotional, and one of our favorite conversations yet so...COME HANG OUT!!!Follow Us on Social Media:Instagram & Threads: @mostlyhorrorpodTikTok & Twitter/X: @mostlyhorrorSteve: @stevenisaverage on all socialsSean: @hypocrite.ink on IG/TikTok, @hypocriteink on Twitter/XEnjoy this episode? Get ready for a wild, surreal ride through the twisted corridors of early-2000s cinema as the Reel Comic Heroes crew dives headfirst into Monkeybone—a film that's part dark fantasy, part slapstick comedy, and entirely confusing. In this episode, we unpack the strange journey of cartoonist Stu Miley (Brendan Fraser), who finds himself trapped in a bizarre limbo world filled with oddball creatures, bad decisions, and one very horny monkey. We'll explore the film's chaotic tone, the surprisingly impressive creature design by Stan Winston Studio, and ask the big questions—like “Who exactly was this movie for?” and “Was Hollywood just... okay with this?” We also look at director Henry Selick's jump from The Nightmare Before Christmas to Monkeybone, and how the film's troubled production and studio meddling might've buried its potential. Expect laughs, bewilderment, and a healthy dose of 2000s nostalgia (and regret). Spoiler warning: monkey business ahead. What happens when Henry Selick, the Director of a Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline, and  James and The Giant Peach decides to create a live action film? You get the insanity that is Monkeybone. This dark fantasy/gross out comedy stars Brendan Fraser, Bridgette Fonda, the voice of John Tutoro, and zombie Chris Kattan and when it released in 2001, it failed at the box office and marked the short end to Henry Selick's live action career. But does this movie deserve all the hate? And are there elements of Monkeybone that critics in 2001 just didn't get? The 15th anniversary re-release of Coraline is crushing it at the box office and Olivia and Emily break down why it's still a hit. They cover everything from claymation (and Olivia's obsession), the beautiful world building, the exaggerated and fun characters, whether or not it's horror, and the crazy film theories surrounding Coraline. Of course you'll also hear Liv and Em recall the first time they watched Coraline at ages 6 and 8, and why Emily, to this day, can't watch horror movies.Coraline was directed by Henry Selick, starring Dakota Fanning and Teri Hatcher and was re-released on August 15, 2024, based on the novella by Neil Gaiman.

Sam Clements talks to filmmaker Henry Selick and actor Terri Hatcher about their classic animation, Coraline, which is now being re-released 15 years after it first opened. This August, celebrate the 15th anniversary of the acclaimed stop-motion epic that has enchanted fans across the globe since its release back in 2009. Combining the visionary imaginations of celebrated author Neil Gaiman (Sandman) and groundbreaking film studio LAIKA (Kubo and the Two Strings, ParaNorman, the upcoming Wildwood), Coraline is a wondrous and thrilling, fun and suspenseful adventure for young and old alike.A young girl walks through a secret door in her new home and discovers an alternate version of her life. On the surface, this parallel reality is eerily similar to her real life–only much better. But when this wondrously off–kilter, fantastical adventure turns dangerous and her counterfeit parents try to keep her forever, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness, determination, and bravery to save her family and get back home.
