Get ready to snap your necks, Australia, because New Zealand black-thrash titans Bulletbelt are crossing the ditch this June to tear you all a new one.The Wellington metal veterans are locked and loaded for the highly anticipated resurrection of Dead of Winter Festival. Taking place on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at its brand-new stomping ground the Mansfield Tavern, this iconic alternative counter-culture gathering is officially back after a multi-year hiatus. While Aussie heavyweights like DZ Deathrays and Mammal are ready to hold down the home front, Bulletbelt represents the absolute pinnacle of relentless, sonic savagery coming from across the Tasman. If you have ever witnessed Bulletbelt live, you know they do not just play music; they deliver a sonic assault that leaves your ears ringing and your feet bruised. Their signature blend of old-school thrash velocity and cold, uncompromising black metal atmospheric filth creates a hellish wall of sound. It is the kind of measured aggression that instantly gets your head snapping. For years, these guys have carved out a reputation as one of the hardest-working, most road-hardened extreme metal forces in the Southern Hemisphere.Dead of Winter has always been a sanctuary for the outsiders, the riff-lords, and the beautiful weirdos of the heavy music community. Moving the madness to the legendary Mansfield Tavern means 34 acts will split your skull across multiple stages. It offers the perfect, high-intensity indoor environment for Bulletbelt to do what they do best: decimate crowds. Expect sweat-soaked leather, full-throttle blast beats, and a wave of pure, unadulterated energy that hits with the subtle force of a flying brick.HEAVY caught up with drummer Steve Francis to find out more. With Dead Of Winter returning after a number of years, we ask Steve just how important festivals that nurture homegrown talent are to the continued growth of Australian and New Zealand music."They're huge," he replied instantly. "And look at Australia. Look at how many amazing heavy bands there are at the moment, and a little bit of a parallel to back here in Wellington. I think the local scene at the moment here in Wellington and the bigger New Zealand is probably better than it's ever been. There's so many bands that are getting overseas and getting signed to international labels and coming over to play Brisbane with such a really cool, diverse lineup as well.We came two years ago and played Necrosonic Festival, and that was catered a little bit more to the heavier side of the rock genre. But this one is really exciting because we're going to be presenting ourselves in front of a bunch of people who aren't just into heavy music, they're into all sorts of rock-oriented music. So, yeah, really excited."In the full interview, Steve reported that Bulletbelt has been off the road since a November 2024 15th‑anniversary show while recording a new album, which is finished and produced by U.S. producer Damien Reynard to achieve a “world‑class” sound. The record emphasizes more melody, higher tempos (including songs near 200 BPM) and power‑metal influences, and is planned for release around October; release timing is partly delayed by the postponed film Deathgasm 2, for which Bulletbelt wrote the theme.Steve characterized the band's festival approach as high‑energy, crowd‑engaging “party band” sets and said festivals are crucial for reaching broader rock audiences beyond heavy‑music niches. He confirmed the band will perform two new songs during the Australian shows and named local bands he's anticipating at Dead of Winter and more.Dead Of Winter will be held at the Mansfield Tavern in Brisbane on June 27, featuring Mammal, DZ Deathrays, Jay and Lindsay, Beanflipper, Toe to Toe, Slim Krusty and many more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

David is mal wieder da. Cheerio. Learn more about your ad choices. Here we are again, the least popular time of year for the most of us. The year-end holidays have passed, and spring is still months away. Oh, and it's the darkest and coldest time of the year, too - because why wouldn't it be? Some of us go dormant like plants this time of year, insulating ourselves and enduring the season with introspection and maybe a touch of seasonal depression. Others go on a more positive spin, taking time to detox and find spiritual rebirth. And of course some people actually love the winter, they vibe with the chill and embrace the darkness. Besides, if not for the harshness of winter, would spring even seem so amazing? Then there are those whose kinkier sides come to life in winter ... but that's another podcast for another day. In this episode of "How We Heard It," your hosts explore music about winter, inspired by winter or evoking winter and all the heartaches and trials of the season as well as the victories and joy. You might be surprised how inspiring winter is for songwriters and just how many loving and uplifting songs are spawned during a "bleak" time of year. There's some moody and sad stuff too, but you know that can't be avoided.

In 1974, Wichita, Kansas was shaken by a series of brutal attacks inside family homes. Men, women, and children were bound, tortured, and killed by a predator who called himself BTK. For 17 years, he terrorized the community, claiming at least 10 victims and taunting police with disturbing letters that detailed his crimes. Then in 1991, the killings abruptly stopped, leaving law enforcement and the public to wonder if the killer had vanished forever. For more than a decade, there was silence. Then in 2004, BTK resurfaced with new messages, reigniting fear in Wichita. But that renewed need for attention would ultimately be his downfall, and by the following year, detectives had identified the killer as Dennis Rader, a father of two, a Scout leader, and a trusted member of his church council. Rader was the last person anyone suspected of being a sexual sadist serial killer, but once investigators began putting all the puzzle pieces together, it became clear that Rader's family-man persona was just a mask covering the monster beneath. Roz debates Monopoly rules with Shem, Mocha forgets his hat and gets chirped, and Roz shares a lasagna so thick it deserves its own segment. Maurie chats with Emma Thompson about her intense new thriller Dead of Winter, while listeners call in with love for the show—including one who's getting married and another who's been listening since childhood. Plus: squirrel feeding drama, a scammy Amazon job offer, and Mocha's mom approves Roz's egg recipe (but dad does not).

HR1 Andy's 5-Star Movie Reviews: Gabby's Doll House: The Movie and Dead of Winter. 9-26-25 by John Rush
This week's episode of the Empire Podcast is one of those jam-packed ones in which we specialise. Guest-wise, Chris Hewitt is blessed with the presence of our old chum, Brett Goldstein, who talks beards, bums, and baring his soul in new romantic drama, All Of You; [18:37 - 36:33 approx] and Chris also has a lovely chat with Emma Thompson as she enters her action hero era in Dead Of Winter. [1:01:07 - 1:16:03 approx] And if that weren't enough, Alex Godfrey talks Leonardo DiCaprio and car chases with One Battle After Another director, Paul Thomas Anderson. [1:40:45 - 1:57:06 approx] Then, in the podbooth, Chris is joined, after a week away, by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer to discuss which dystopian gameshow they would do best in, cast their eyes over the week's movie news, including a bunch of trailers, and review all three of the films listed above (with a little help from Alex). Enjoy.

This week, Evan and Megan discuss ELEANOR THE GREAT (3:14), Scarlett Johansson's directorial debut starring June Squibb as a 94-year-old Jewish woman who's grieving, tells a lie that spirals beyond her control, and befriends a college student (Erin Kellyman). The great performances anchor the film. Then we all (Dave, Evan, and Megan) talk about DEAD OF WINTER (24:21), Brian Kirk's action thriller starring Emma Thompson as a woman travelling solo in the woods who discovers a kidnapped teen and must contend with the kidnappers. We had divergent opinions on the film, but we all agree Judy Greer is fantastic as a desperate and ruthless villain. And on our Patreon bonus episode, we converse about the Robert Redford movie poll winner: the 1992 comedy-caper SNEAKERS!

And if you're already a Vanguardista, we salute you. ‘One Battle After Another' hits the big screen this week—and there's already plenty of buzz, not least from Steven Spielberg, about this much anticipated new flick starring Leonardo DiCaprio and the dazzlingly named newcomer Chase Infiniti. Its director—and one of the most exciting directors working today—Paul Thomas Anderson is our very special guest this week. He and Simon unpack his decades-long writing process on the movie, his first ever car chase, and getting binned off by DiCaprio for ‘Titanic'. Could this be the year PTA finally gets his Oscar? Answers in an envelope now please... Mark reviews ‘One Battle After Another' too--along with two more of the week's most popcorn-worthy cinema releases. First up, ‘The Dead Of Winter'--where we see Emma Thompson explore new territory in a frozen thriller set in chilly Minnesota. And yes, that means she does the accent. Plus, ‘The Strangers: Chapter 2'... let's see if this unintentionally silly slasher can improve on its predecessor, which shouldn't be difficult... one would hope. All the usual tasty features too as Mark runs down the full Box Office Top 10 and Simon tries to wring some genuine humour out of the Laughter Lift.
