In this episode, Travis and his producer Eric riff on one of the hottest debates in modern city life: are reservations and curated nights out killing “real” experiences, or are they the only sane way to survive places like Las Vegas? Using a viral Subway Takes clip as a jumping-off point, they break down why lines get engineered, why chaos is overrated, and how to actually plan a great Vegas trip without burning cash (or patience) on bad clubs and hour-long waits. On this episode we talk about: The “no more reserved seats” hot take and why Travis and Eric think it's one of the worst opinions on going out How engineered lines and scarcity at places like With Love Always shape perception and demand Why wandering around for 45 minutes “exploring the neighborhood” sounds romantic online but is awful in real life—especially with kids Eric and Travis's case for reservations, predictable tables, and reducing unnecessary chaos in already chaotic lives Vegas tips: overrated experiences (nightclubs, certain hyped dining spots) versus underrated ones (off-strip restaurants, comedy clubs, and Cirque shows) Specific recommendations for steakhouses and nicer dinners: Del Frisco's, STK, Bavette's, Mastro's, and local gem Black Sheep Why national chains often underperform in Vegas compared to chef-driven, off-strip concepts Top show picks: Mad Apple, Mystère, Absinthe, O, and why comedy clubs like Brad Garrett's are such a great bet A frank breakdown of why most nightclubs are “eternal pits of money,” bottle service psychology, and how to avoid a five-figure hangover Top 3 Takeaways Convenience tools like reservations aren't killing spontaneity; for most people they're protecting sanity, time, and the ability to actually enjoy a night out. In Vegas, the best value often comes from off-strip or less-hyped spots—chef-led restaurants, comedy clubs, and thoughtfully chosen shows can beat loud clubs and generic chains. Nightclubs are designed as high-margin, high-temptation environments; if you go, treat it like a pre-planned expense, not a place where attention from staff equals real connection. Notable Quotes "When I go to eat is when I'm like, life's been chaotic. I want to go to my table." "Any night club is an overrated experience—it's an eternal pit of money where you can't hear anything." "Have fun, be cautious, and don't buy into the thought that these bottle service girls really love you—it's all a hustle designed to get all the money out of your bank." Ep. 159 Absinthe: How Bad Science and a Greedy Wine Industry Transformed the "Green Fairy" Into the "Green Demon"

Absinthe, a pale green drink consisting of mostly alcohol and small amounts of wormwood oil, has only recently been legalized in much of the western world after a nearly century long ban. Everyone knows the myths about absinthe - that it causes hallucinations, that it'll make you go crazy. They banned it for a reason after all right? It's powerful, dangerous stuff which, in many ways, makes it all the more alluring to the masses. But what if I told you that thujone, the psychoactive chemical found in wormwood, doesn't cause hallucinations at all? That the degeneration and "poisoning of the population" blamed entirely on absinthe at the turn of the 20th century was much likely to have been caused by the near 70% alcohol it contained? So why was absinthe really banned? Who turned the "green fairy" into the "green demon?" Let's fix that. Support the show! Join the Patreon (patreon.com/historyfixpodcast)Buy some merchBuy Me a CoffeeVenmo @Shea-LaFountaineSources: Distillations Magazine "The Devil in a Little Green Bottle: A History of Absinthe"Healthline "Does Absinthe Really Make You Hallucinate?"Alandia "Absinthe History: From invention to ban and re-legalization"Food52 "The Folklore-Filled History of Absinthe"Shoot me a message! We offer tastings, cocktails on tap, and rotating spirit slushies.Old Homestead Distilling Company in Indiana celebrates a rich history of local distilling that dates back to homesteading times when each homestead proudly operated its own still. Our approach is deeply rooted in this heritage, blending traditional batch distillation methods with contemporary techniques. We source our grains, fruits, botanicals, and yeast locally, embracing Indiana's agricultural richness to craft spirits that reflect our state's distinct flavors.Initially, our distillery will focus on producing clear spirits. Our offerings will include Agave Spirits, Gins, and traditionally-made Absinthe, alongside a unique creation we call "Sunshine Spirits." This is a type of moonshine, made from malted and roasted sunflower mash, offering a fresh twist on an old favorite. Later we will offer Bourbons, Ryes, traditional Whiskeys, and Apple Brandy.Alan Bishop is a self-taught distiller and historian of Southern Indiana's deep distilling heritage. He grew up alongside generations of tobacco farmers and both legal and illicit distillers. Alan began his own education in earnest at the age of 15 on a pot still he built with the help of his father and grandfather. By his mid-twenties, Alan had pursued home distillation to its pinnacle and the time had come to take the next step.Alan began distilling professionally at Copper and Kings in Louisville, KY, where he oversaw the cultivation of Chenin Blanc, Colombard, and Muscat grapes. He was responsible for the production of apple brandy and absinthe, and also the blending of products for bottling. After two years at Copper and Kings, Alan became Head Distiller at Spirits of French Lick in French Lick, Indiana where his focus was on creating spirits with a respect to historical styles of distillation and a grain-forward approach. In April 2024, Alan left Spirits of French Lick to take on the role of Head Alchemist at Old Homestead Distilling Co in Indiana, helping to build the distillery from the ground up. Old Homestead Distilling Co will carry on Alan's dedication to merging traditional methods with contemporary techniques, incorporating locally-sourced ingredients including wild yeast.Alan collaborates with the Mount Vernon Distilling Program and frequently volunteers at the Historic Locust Grove Farm Distillery. Currently, he is working with the Indiana DNR to re-establish the historic distillery at Spring Mill State Park in Lawrence County, Indiana. He also is an established seed cultivator, focusing on the development of agricultural/horticultural varietals for distilling. In addition, Alan provides professional distillery consultation services through his company, Alchemy in Action.Alan loves to write about the history of the Southern Indiana Distilling Complex. You can read his research on the lives, individual methods, and stories of several Hoosier Distillers on his blog, alchemistcabinet.wordpress.com. He is the author of two books on distillation, The Alchemist Cabinet vol 1. Philosophy and The Alchemist Cabinet Vol.2: The Black Forest Method.Alan hosts the Distillers Talk podcast, One Piece at a Time Distilling Institute on Youtube and If You Have Ghosts You Have Everything podcast.

Ugly Stick's Absinthe returns in 2025 with a long overdue vinyl reissue, more than thirty years after its first appearance on CD in 1993. Formed in Delaware, Ohio in 1989, the four-piece carved out a sound that was equal parts Los Angeles punk and Midwestern heartland rock, drawing on the grit of X and the melodic punch of Tom Petty to create what critics would later hail as “genre-crossing” and “seminal.” Hovercraft Records has remastered the album and added bonus material from contemporaneous live shows and unreleased studio sessions, marking the record's first-ever release on LP and digital platforms. Steeped in the small towns and shrinking industrial landscapes of Middle America, Ugly Stick were uniquely positioned to capture the tension of that moment in time. Their cow-punk attack carried both the edge of beer-soaked garage nihilism and the expressiveness of roots rock filtered through a landscape of carnival posters, endless farm fields, and collapsing barns. As Columbus Alive once wrote, Absinthe was “the bedrock of the Cowtown sound,” establishing Ugly Stick as central figures in a movement that defined the Columbus scene of the early '90s. The record's remastered release only underscores how prescient the band was. “Their mix of punk, college rock and alt-country was years ahead of its time,” noted Daggerzine. Exclaim! observed that “straddling the line between genres is never an easy task but with Ugly Stick's talent and experience the results have rarely been so rewarding.” From the ragged twang to the jangly guitars, the band's ability to transform punk and rockabilly into something original drew international praise, with Belgium's Rootstime calling them “pioneers of a genre and a sound which was baptized as the Columbus sound.”Photo Credit: Amy Rathbone UGLY STICK ONLINE INSTAGRAM | FACEBOOK | BANDCAMP | YOUTUBE Checkout my YouTube Channel with long form interviews from the Subversives | the History of Lowest of the Low. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9d1VSeOHYuxFWKuRdmn9j8UTW6AHwS_fAlso my Weekly Tour Vlog is up an live on the YouTubeshttps://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9d1VSeOHYuwphwhc4zd0VgY66f1OUQZp Pledge monthly with Patreon https://www.patreon.com/apologueShop Apologue products at http://apologue.ca/shopCheck out new Four Square Here: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/foursquare/brighton-beach-ephttps://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/foursquare/seven-oh-sevenhttps://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/foursquare/industry-at-home–21st-anniversary-remix-remasteredhttps://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/foursquare/when-weeks-were-weekends

There's a certain, very specific green liqueur that's become difficult to find in the past few years… impossible in some places. Jessica Leigh Graves, the founder of Violet Crown Spirits in Austin Texas, set out to make a “twin” (her word) of this bottle, and did pretty damn well for herself. She sits down with Greg and Sother to talk about making absinthe in Texas, what it's like to try and recreate one of the most famous cordials ever, and what she and her partner are doing on a farm they've set up in Texas's hill country.PLUS, congress recently closed a farm bill loophole that could have massive implications for the THC beverage industry. From the height of its popularity in the 19th century to its modern revival, absinthe has a long and storied history. A favorite pastime of artists, writers, and bohemians, the spirit known as "the green fairy" was subject to a near global ban for nearly a century due to myths about its hallucinogenic effects. Even after those bans were lifted around the turn of the millennium, its wild and mysterious reputation remains. On this week's show, we delve into the mythical world of this once illicit elixir. We begin with Evan Rail, author of The Absinthe Forger. In this true crime novel, Evan follows the trail of a shadowy grifter who uses absinthe's mythical status to his own ends. Along the way, Evan gives readers a fascinating glimpse into the international underground absinthe scene that proliferated during the drink's prohibition. Then, Marielle Songy joins us to discuss the history of an iconic New Orleans cocktail: the Absinthe Frappé. Marielle delves into the early days of the drink and its first home, the Old Absinthe House in the Crescent City. Today, you can enjoy an Absinthe Frappé anywhere in the nation thanks in no small part to New Orleans environmental chemist Ted Breaux. Ted tells us about the two decades he spent analyzing pre-ban absinthe bottles to prove to the U.S. government that there was nothing dangerous about the fabled green liquor. Send us a textIn this special revisit episode of Fabulously Delicious: The French Food Podcast, we return to one of our most loved series — the A to Z of French Herbs — to rediscover a plant that's as intriguing as it is bold: Absinthe, also known as wormwood. Far more than just the legendary green spirit, this herb has a rich history in French cuisine, medicine, and folklore. From ancient Greece to the cafés of Paris, absinthe has left its unmistakable mark on culture and gastronomy. We'll explore wormwood's origins, from its growth in North Africa and Eurasia to its medicinal use dating back to 1552 B.C. Discover how it found its way into drinks like vermouth and bitters, spiced mead in the Middle Ages, and even became a natural pesticide in organic gardens. Along the way, we'll uncover its myths, its medicinal risks, and its reputation as both a healing tonic and a dangerous indulgence.Absinthe's influence in French cuisine is equally fascinating. You'll hear how chefs have used it to season meats, fish, oysters, and escargot, as well as in a striking 1889 creation — Absinthe Sorbet — served to celebrate the unveiling of the Eiffel Tower. We'll also discuss its place in art and literature, from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to its infamous association with bohemian Paris. So pour yourself a glass of wine, slice some baguette, and join me for this deep dive into the bitter, aromatic world of absinthe. Whether you're a longtime listener or discovering the A to Z of French Herbs for the first time, this episode is a journey into the flavours, stories, and culinary magic that make French food so endlessly captivating.Looking to deepen your culinary journey beyond the podcast? Evan Rail is based in Prague, in the Czech Republic and is prolific food and travel writer, and has covered beer and spirits for many years. His latest book is called The Absinthe Forger: A True Story of Deception, Betrayal, and the World's Most Dangerous Spirit.Evan and I have been crossing journalistic paths for many years. We both have written for the New York Times Travel section for a long time and we also have an interest in food and drink, though in very different parts of the world. But we now have the same agent and last year, said agent, sent me a copy of Evan's new book before it came out and I couldn't put it down. For one, absinthe is this intriguing spirit and I've always been fascinated by it. It has this rich history that inspired all kinds of great art, but then it got banned in much of the world a century ago and there's always this desire for things that we cannot have. The book is part history lesson about the absinthe story and part true crime novel about this forger that was creating and selling what he alleged were highly sought after expensive pre-ban bottles of absinthe. Evan describes this entire absinthe underground that exists, this community of enthusiasts who want to taste history, and how actual lost bottles are occasionally being tracked down and being rediscovered in chateaus and estate sales. It's a great read and I highly suggest getting a copy.Read more at New Worlder.

This is a Vintage Selection from 2006The BanterThe Guys talk about a new (2006) NY state law permitting distilling on a small scale and two guys who are making an interesting vodka from apples. The ConversationThe Restaurant Guys welcome Ted (T. A.) Breaux, chemist, microbiologist and absinthe expert. Ted talks about the misguided banning of absinthe and his leading the charge for its legalization. (It was legalized in the U.S. the following year.) He also described the history and ritual of absinthe including the unfounded rumors about its hallucinogenic properties. Hear about his quest to reanimate the Green Fairy. The Inside TrackThe Guys are fascinated by Ted's analysis of unopened antique bottles of absinthe which led him to developing modern absinthe that is true to its tradition.“Well, it's akin to forensic chemistry. What I had to do was take samples  from these unopened bottles and I subjected them to a chemical analysis. It took quite a while for me to go through and identify every significant compound in these absinthes. It opened up a whole new world of detail. I'm talking detail of…a list of herbs, where those herbs are grown, how they're harvested are all key elements in the end result,” Ted Breaux on The Restaurant Guys Podcast 2006BioTheodore (T. A.) Breaux is a research chemist and absinthe expert. He lobbied for the legalization of absinthe in the United States. He founded Jade Liquers and revitalized the world of absinthe. He was able to effectively reverse engineer antique brands of absinthe. January of 2004, he began distilling absinthe using a distillery founded in 1834 with absinthe distilling equipment installed by Gustave Eiffelthis. This launched Jade Liqueurs, with the Jade absinthes being held in high regard for over 20 years. In 2007, he created LUCID absinthe for Viridian Spirits, which we used to break the 95-year ban on absinthe in the USA. In March of 2007, LUCID became the first genuine absinthe sold in the Friday, March 14 is the first Restaurant Guys LIVE with Chef Rocco DiSpirito at the NBPAC in New Brunswick, NJ (next to The Guys' restaurants!)Restaurant Guys' Regulars get a discount code for VIP tickets. When one is found dead, nearly naked, out in front of the family home, the spouse is the only suspect, but the evidence is basically non-existent. Did the true story ever surface & was anyone held responsible??Along the way, we find out that crawfish are delicious & not that hard to eat, that just because someone is on OnlyFans, it doesn't mean their spouse isn't taking the pictures, and that Absinthe liquor bottles usually don't land on top on cell phones!!New episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports! Absinthe is a drink that has been both romanticized and demonized over the centuries. While the spirit was a favorite of avant-gardists like Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh and Baudelaire, it was also thought to be hallucinogenic and the catalyst for violent crime. My guest is Evan Rail, author of "The Absinthe Forger: A True Story of Deception, Betrayal, and the World's Most Dangerous Spirit". He tells us about the history of the infamous drink and his investigation into a modern-day counterfeiter who imploded the secretive pre-ban absinthe market with his fakeries. To painters and poets in late-1800s France, absinthe was "the green muse" or the "green fairy," an almost magical potion that promised vivid dreams, wild ideas, and artistic inspiration with every sip. By the 1910s, this once incredibly popular herbal liquor was banned—not only in France, but in countries around the world. Condemned as the cause of both individual ruin and social decline, absinthe consumption was blamed for seizures, memory gaps, hallucinations, and even murderous rage. So what's the deal: is absinthe just a drink, or is it actually deadly? This episode, we've got the story behind the myths, from witchy distillers to women on bicycles, and military rations to pre-ban bottles. Join us for the trip! Learn more about your ad choices.
