McCahon met penpal Ron O'Reilly in 1938, when the pair were just 19 and 24 respectively. They wrote to each other regularly, amassing hundreds of letters covering McCahon's art practice, the contemporary art scene, ideas, philosophy, and spiritual life. A selection of the letters chosen by McCahon scholar Peter Simpson has been published in a new book Dear Colin, Dear Ron - with an afterword by McCahon's grandson Finn.

The first half of an art auction containing items from the Bank of New Zealand's collection has exceeded expectations, bringing in more than $13.5 million last night. It included the $2.45 million sale of a Colin McCahon painting, which was a new record for New Zealand. Because the collection was in public hands when it was put together, there has been some anger that the works weren't first made available to New Zealand's many museums. The national museum, Te Papa, spent just over $625,000 at the auction for two paintings, one by A. Lois White and the other by Robin White. Te Papa's chief executive, Courtney Johnston, spoke to Guyon Espiner.

A video version of this episode can be viewed here Justin Paton is the co-curator of the most exciting exhibition to arrive on Sydney's doorstep since our world was upturned by the pandemic. ‘Matisse: Life and Spirit, Masterpieces from the Centre Pompidou, Paris', now showing at the Art Gallery of NSW, is an uplifting collection of paintings, drawings and sculptures which not only brings with it excitement, joy and optimism, but also is immediate in its nature.  “As these works have come out of their crates I've really had the feeling that the paintings are almost making themselves before your eyes … he's not giving you a sealed off, finished, product”, Justin tells me in this podcast episode. “He's showing you his thinking. He wants you to feel as though you're looking over his shoulder as he revises, adjusts, amends a line, sands something back'. And this proximity to Matisse is not only felt in the works themselves, but in the way they are presented to us. His sculptures and paintings seem to talk to each other and the breathtaking space which evokes the artist's Chapel of the Rosary in Vence takes us a step closer to what he might have felt in the moments of its creation. The space is designed by renowned Australian architect Richard Johnson. Justin Paton is the head curator of international art at the Art Gallery of NSW, talks with me about the exhibition, from the early works from the Fauvist period and Matisse's time connecting with the Australian artist John Russell to the later cut-out works and how they came about. He also talks with me about the ‘Matisse Alive' exhibition which he also curated. Justin is also an acclaimed writer and his books include ‘How to look at a painting' (which was adapted into a TV series) and more recently  ‘McCahon Country' about the works of the famous New Zealand painter Colin McCahon. To hear our conversation click on ‘play' beneath the above photo. The exhibition ‘Matisse: Life and Spirit' continues until 13 March 2022. Now she collaborates with a number of writers to tell the full story in a book called The Architect and the Artists. This painting is from 'The book of power' series of multi-canvas appropriation works which Imants Tillers began in 1981 and still continues. Tillers cites the work of other artists to question authorial originality, how images circulate and to investigate ideas about location and place. The numerals 1, 2, 3 are taken from 'Koru, 1, 2, 3' 1965 by New Zealand modernist painter Colin McCahon. Tillers has overlaid the McCahon work onto a landscape of Lake Wakitipu in New Zealand by colonial artist Eugene von Guérard. He has added a third appropriation, the signature of Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico. De Chirico's reuse of his own early 20th-century imagery, in works he painted much later, is an example of the cultural recycling that fascinates Tillers.
