Hey Plant People! I've decided to take a little break from releasing interviews while I get a few of them recorded, and wanted to give you some new content! I'm going to start making occasional Plant Tips episodes about whatever happens to be going on at the time. It's definitely summer here where I live in Texas, so I thought I'd do an episode throwing out some tips about keeping your plants happy and healthy (and just alive) through the summer heat. What's up, Plant People?? Listen, there are a lot of good things for you and one of those things is for you to not die lost in the woods. To help make sure that wish comes true, my friend Paul Csomo from the Varmints Podcast came on the show for today's episode to tell you some things he's learned from his hobby of studying wilderness survival. We also talk a lot about starting a podcast, listening to podcasts, and about gas station sushi. Paul is a wonderful human, and I think you're really going to enjoy this. Don't eat the sushi, don't eat the mushroom, and don't die in the woods. Hey Plant People! Welcome back for the first new episode of 2021! I'm trying out some new formatting stuff, but I'm stoked about today's episode! I talked with Rachel Boyd, who's a Jazz musician, radio producer for KTTZ (the Texas Tech University station and local public media affiliate), and the host of the brand new In The Grow podcast. We talk about music, life, and the radical act that is growing your own food. It's hopeful and fun and I know you're going to love it. Hey there, Plant People! This is a very special bonus episode because it includes a whole bunch of my good podcast friends! I'm in a little (ok, not THAT little) group of podcasters who talk about science and academia on their shows, and we all thought it would be fun to do a live-streamed wrap up of 2020. This is the audio recording of that live stream which took place a couple of days ago. It's fun and encouraging we spend VERY little time talking about COVID and a lot of time talking about the good things we've learned and experienced in our podcast journeys. Be sure to follow all the shows listed below on Twitter and check out their podcasts! This isn't the episode that was supposed to come out today, but it was the one I felt like I needed to do. I graduate on Friday, and recorded this (longer than intended) piece about my experience through my PhD and where I go from here. I hope you get something out of it! It was certainly therapeutic for me to record. This episode also contains a promo for follow PodFix Network show, The Fish Nerds! Find out more and listen at FishNerdsPodcast.com!Oh, also, I started a new podcast! I wanted to be a part of #NaPodPoMo for November, where podcasters are posting content every day, but it didn't fit well with Planthropology. Because of that, The Plant Prof was born! Tune in weekly for plant facts, garden tips and tricks, answers to your questions, and whatever else pops into my head! Episodes will be bite sized and never more than 10-15 minutes long. I hope everyone (in the US) had a lovely Thanksgiving and the rest of you wonderful people had a great Thursday! In my family, we've always put up our Christmas decorations the day or weekend after Thanksgiving. I thought it would be fun to do a short episode about Christmas trees so you'd have something to listen to in case you're like us! I discuss origins of the tradition as well as pros and cons of different types of Christmas trees you could buy for your home! I'm also planning to do an episode next week about how plants are used in holiday traditions all over the world. I hope you're safe and well and that you enjoy this short little bonus episode!**********************************************************************************************Well hey there, I started a new podcast! ***HEADPHONE USERS BEWARE*** Hi guys, and welcome back to another episode of the pod! Today we cover the heartbreaking case of Jonelle Matthews. After being classified as a cold case for decades, construction workers discovered her body, and the Greenley PD chased down their suspect. Happy whatever month it is, everyone! Really, time is mostly meaningless these days. What's not meaningless, however, is this wonderful episode with Beth Nichols of Fronds With Benefits. Beth is an absolute delight of a human being and a brilliant plant scientist. She's just finishing up her PhD in computational plant science, has spent time as a biology teacher, is a talented artist, and really just so much fun to talk to. ALSO, she designed the fabulous new Planthropology logo! Because of that, The Plant Prof was born! Tune in every day in November, then weekly after that, for plant facts, garden tips and tricks, answers to your questions, and whatever else pops into my head! Episodes will be bite sized and never more than 10-15 minutes long. Listen in today for a taste of the show, with 3 of the first episodes of The Plant Prof! Y'all, I've been waiting for this one a long time! I've wanted to have an archaeobotanist on with me since the show started, and was lucky enough to find 3! Dr. Alan Farahani and his undergraduate researchers, Lydia Wolfe and Carlos Romo-Caballero make up the Farahani Lab of Archaeobotany at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and study the archaeological remains of ancient agriculture and what those remains mean anthropologically. They were the PERFECT guests to wrap up year 1 of Planthropology and I hope you love this episode as much as I did!Farahani LabVarmints Podcast: @VarmintsPodcastJust the Zoo of Us Podcast: @JusttheZooofUsPetri Dish Podcast: @DishPodcastDiscover Pods Awards: https://awards.discoverpods.com/Sample Excavator Podcast: @SampleExcavatorCheck out our Podcast Partners (Podners?):Pecan RidgeFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/thepecanridge/Website: https://pecanridge.com/Use the promo code "plantpeople" at check out for %10 off your order!Local LBKFacebook: @LocalLBKInstagram: @LocalLBKTwitter: @Local_LBKTikTok: @LocalLBKWebsite: www.locallbk.comFollow the link below to sign up to be a member of Local LBK for just $5/month and get access to dozens of great deals and discounts from businesses around Lubbock, TX!Sign-up for Local LBK Rewards! As always, thanks so much for listening! It's our second episode with Joe Vaughn! We talked about his day today responsibilities as a procurement forester, how climate change is affecting the forestry and timber industries, and about what it's like to be black in the green industry. We cover some heavy topics, but Joe is such a positive person and approaches inclusion, diversity, and representation in such a meaningful way, that I hope this leaves you inspired to be more inclusive and accepting in your own life. Prairies and grasslands are great, and so are people who study them. I chatted with the recently doctored Dr. Kat Radicke. We met in grad school and were pretty fast friends. She's charming, funny, and super smart and I think you're really going to enjoy hearing from her. We talk about everything from the stress and challenges of graduate school, to collecting cow burps and it was a lot of fun! I'll be honest, my heart is super heavy this week and I struggled with today's episode. Between my first plan falling through and just not feeling my backup idea, I was pretty lost until I remembered this little recording I did with my son Bradley from the end of March. It's silly, kind of pointless, and chaotic, and I hope it's a fun distraction from...well all the everything going on. Hang in there, friends. Memes. Olives. Guerrilla ecologists. What do all these things have in common? We talk about them all in this awesome episode with Rhett Barker and Curtis Sarkin from Wild Green Memes for Ecological Fiends. They were gracious enough to re-record with me after I had some technical problems and I'm so glad they did. We laugh a ton about memes and get serious about ecology. You're going to love it! Hey Plant People! I'm SO excited about today's episode. Paige Boyle is a Presidential Doctoral Research Fellow at Utah State, an advocate for Women in STEM, a self-proclaimed "earthworm whisperer," and a wonderful human. We talked about her experiences in graduate school, how completely freaking WILD earthworms are, how to plug in as a graduate student (and important it is to be able to say now), and what's it's like to be a woman in a STEM field. It was so much chatting with her and I think you'll get a lot out of this conversation! What's up, Plant People?? I have a great one for you today. I sat down (several months ago, actually) with my dear friend Kristin Bingham to talk about plants, college education, and just life in general. Kristin is an Assistant Professor of Biology at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. She also runs the greenhouse and gardens at SPC (sound familiar?) and is super hilarious. There are actually times I'm concerned we're the same person Kristin is also the host of the Catabolic Conversations Podcast (more info below) with her colleague, Dr. Megan Keith. You'll LOVE hearing Kristin's thoughts on the twists and turns our lives take as we figure out what we want to be, on plants and science, and on how to be successful as a student.I mentioned all kinds of new stuff that's going on in today's episode! What's up, Plant People? It's your host, Vikram Baliga, back again with Episode 7! Listen, do you like water? Of course you do! I know for a fact you like to drink, eat, bathe (at least I hope), and, well, just have the ability to live in general. Water is totally necessary for life and 100% irreplaceable to us as living organisms. It's a good thing there are people like Katherine Drury out there! Katherine is the Education and Outreach Coordinator with the High Plains Underground Water Conservation District on the Southern High Plains of Texas. I sat down with Katherine to talk about everything from her love of gardening to how different types of aquifers store and supply water to so much of North America. She's fun, personable, smart, and an excellent science communicator with experience in traditional news media, horticulture, water conservation, and so many other things. Dr. Ritchie took on the role of Department Chair in September of 2019 and has already made a big impact on the students, staff, and faculty in the department. I got the chance to sit down and have a great conversation with Dr. Ritchie about everything from his thoughts about the directions in which academia should to his goals as a researcher and Chairperson. It's a funny conversation that stays lighthearted, even while tackling some of the ins and outs of a competitive and evolving academic world. Whether you're involved with academia and education or not, you'll love Dr. Ritchie's insightful and kind take on the way we should approach education and treat people. Russ Plowman doesn't agree and thinks the future actually looks bright, as horticulturists will become more and more important as populations grow and the climate changes. Listen in for a great discussion about the many and various things one could do in horticulture, like floral design, nursery growing, landscape design, food production, education, and much more. Turns out, Russ Plowman has done pretty much all of those things. He's the leader of the Texas Tech Floral Design program and Ornamental Horticulture Research Group, an instructor of horticulture, and a long time and accomplished business owner in the field.
