Audiostretto 59/4/24 English

Pipettes are very useful for dosing liquid medicines or other substances in the laboratory, or sometimes for cooking and baking at home, because they allow you to dose the desired liquid drop by drop. There is usually a squeezable rubber at the end of the pipette, which is used to create a small vacuum to draw up the liquid. The same rubber is then squeezed again to dispense when the pipette is no longer in the liquid. The rubber therefore ensures that the pipette can be both filled and emptied. Squeeze to empty, release to fill. An interesting thought: when I let go, I get something. We usually have a different understanding: we think we have to actively grasp what we don't want to lose. Here it is the other way round. Perhaps this comparison will help you in an area where you need something and yet realise that you are not getting anywhere on your own. I wish you an extraordinary day!

The Waeve is the coming together of two unique musical voices - Graham Coxon & Rose Elinor Dougall who've just come together to make a rather deep and magical record together as The Waeve.Rose - started out in the Spector-eque girl group The Pipettes in the early millennium, has recorded since with Mark Ronson amongst others and her solo music, like on her most recent solo album A New Illusion, taps into a dreamy yet darkly tinged sound with elements like psychedelia, krautrock and folk in the mix. Graham is, what we call in England, somewhat of a national treasure. As guitarist from Blur, he's been a major creative driving force behind some of the most iconic music of the last thirty years and like Thurston Moore or Jonny Marr, created a real alternative version of a guitar hero, one with vulnerability, angularity and curiosity in place of machismo and pomposity.  They spoke with Paul about how they came together and made a dark, richly layered album, along the way becoming a couple and they reflect on the difficult subject of Englishness, their creative processes and more. The Waeve's debut LP is out Feb 5th on TransgressiveThis episode is sponsored by Audio-TechnicaPaul's debut book, Coming To Berlin: Global Journeys Into An Electronic Music And Club Culture Capital is out now on Velocity Press. Abstract: The patch-clamp technique has revolutionized neurophysiology by allowing to study single neuronal excitability, synaptic connectivity, morphology, and the transcriptomic profile. However, the throughput in recordings is limited because of the manual replacement of patch-pipettes after each attempt often also being unsuccessful. This has been overcome by automated cleaning the tips in detergent solutions, allowing to reuse the pipette for further recordings. Here, we developed a novel method of automated cleaning by sonicating the tips within the bath solution wherein the cells are placed, reducing the risk of contaminating the bath solution or internal solution of the recording pipette by any detergent and avoiding the necessity of a separate chamber for cleaning. We showed that the patch-pipettes can be used consecutively at least 10 times and that the cleaning process does not negatively impact neither the brain slices nor other patched neurons. This method, combined with automated patch-clamp, highly improves the throughput for single and especially multiple recordings. Copy rights belong to original authors. We discuss Pop, Folk, Post-Metal, Emo, & Whatever the hell Scott Walker was doing at that point. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. In this podcast always possible Chief Executive, Richard Freeman, has a conversation with Bobby Barry and Emily Mary Barnett about making music that is experimental, challenging, interesting and unusual - with a new take on the original musical Avant-Garde of the 1940s and 1950s. Richard asks Bobby and Emily whether this music is more of an experience than something to be listened to on its own and whether cynics who dismiss experimentalism as pretentious and craftless have opinions that should be respected. Is making an electronic soundscape so different from writing a pop-song? Could anyone do it? And are genres and scenes important when pushing music into new directions? When working together, Bobby Barry and Emily Mary Barnett are better known as music duo Far Rainbow and as founders of the Zero Wave club nights, home of one of London's most acclaimed experimental music scenes. Bobby is a composer, producer, teacher and writer, who had top 40 chart success as creator of indie-pop girl group The Pipettes in 2003. His solo act Monster Bobby has developed a following in the electronic music scene, and many other new music devotees regularly read his criticism in The Quietus, The Wire and Art Review. Bobby's book ‘The Music Of The Future' was published in 2017. Emily Mary Barnett is an artist, photographer and drummer. Her work has always combined physical visual art, layered from unusual materials, with live performance and events. Her most well-known curations are The Shindig Club in Brighton and the No events in East London. Emily was recently artist-in-residence with Theatre Deli and her 3D paintings were exhibited at London's ASC Gallery and the Dronica Festival in 2017. We end the episode and close out the year by sharing our favorite science stories of 2017. 00:00:00- Scottish Loch Ness tour guide Captain George Edwards claims to have the best phoot of Nessie yet and Steve D. wants to know what the Paleopals think. We're not impressed, scientists find new species regularly. Neither is the uncredited token skeptic from the clip Benjamin Radford, who hosts the Monster Talk podcast. Ryan attempts to debunk, Charlie finds a conflict of interest, and Patrick comments on the aesthetics. The faithful will no doubt remember that our first episode started with a Nessie story, so it's only right to keep that going on our anniversary. 00:16:31 - Drinks are a lot like Loch Ness, deep, dark, and possibly hiding something wonderful. Charlie returns to a sage-muddled whiskey spritz. Patrick defends the value of wine blends. And Ryan captures a yeti (stout) with a brachiolope (glass). 00:23:19 - Trailer Trash Talk goes back to Santa Cruz with a tangent filled segment obstensibly talking about the preview for the SC-based surf movie Chasing Mavericks. 00:38:37 - Jake C. heard about a new study claiming that glass shape affects the drinking speed of alcoholic beverages and asked us about it via our Facebook page. The Paleopals have nothing but kind words for the new study published in PLOS ONE, but that may just been the booze in a curved glass talking. 00:57:31 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like this episode, already 2/3's done. Patrick presents a donation from Nick W. letting us know he's back on the bandwagon and happy we made it to 150. Thanks, Nick! It's been 3 years and we're all thrilled for 3 more but it's also important to look back so the boys then round out the show reminiscing and talking about emotions, podcasting, and friendship.   Discuss this episode and other podcasts from the Brachiolope Media Network on our forum!   Music for this week's show provided by: Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2 I'll Drink To That - The Mighty Mighty Bosstones ...And Then They Were Upon Us - Reigning Monarchs (Greg Beherent's band, co-host of the Walking the Room podcast) Pull Shapes - The Pipettes

Awww, the Best-Of list. Everybody longs to have the definitive outlook, but nobody ever gets it right. So here’s what we will be doing: We will be analyzing the year end lists of some other "reputable" music publications, I’ll sort of edit them accordingly to fit my preferences, and then play those songs on the Snobcast. Then you, the reader, can tell me what you think should stay; what should go; and what should be added or subtracted from the list/playlist. In the end we will have compiled the definitive Best of 2007 list. Read the full blog at Donnybrook Writing Academy
