It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma are joined by Austin Kocher, political and legal geographer studying immigration enforcement, and Assistant Research Professor at Syracuse University. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel's  bombardment of Gaza – breaking another ceasefire and killing hundreds – Trump's back-and-forth with the judicial system, DOGE's assault on the US Government, Trump's union-busting pick for NLRB General Counsel, Trump's crackdown on pro-Palestinian speech, the FDA's move to delapidated office spaces, an abortion arrest out of Texas, and Trump's attack on the Social Security Administration, before expanding on Israel's violation of a ceasefire in Gaza with strikes killing over 300, and setting the stage for a potential return to ground invasion. Professor Austin Kocher then joins, diving right into the Trump Administration's recent deportation of hundreds of Venezuelans to El Salvadorian “gulags” under the guise of association with militant gang “Tren de Aragua,” exploring the unsurprising revelations about the *lack* of association between many of these migrants and the gang, and why authoritarian President of El Salvador Nayib Bukele was so happy to bring these migrants into his expansive prison labor system ($6 million will help). Next, Professor Kocher steps back to assess the insane legal “strategy” grounding Trump's agenda, with his blantant push for chaos allowing for his regime to carry out astonishingly inhumane actions amid countless injuctions and court orders, and why Judge Boasberg's push to get attourney's to sign onto their arguments might create some liability moving forward. After expanding on the regime's obvious misrepresentation of who they are deporting, Austin, Sam, and Emma walk through the various layers of protection offered to immigrants in the US right now, including preemptive legal action, and knowing your rights, before wrapping up the interview by assessing exactly how absurd Trump's claim of an “invasion” truly is. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch White House Spox. Karoline Leavitt attempt to claim verbal court orders don't count, reflect on Trump's growing friction with the courts, and unpack Steve Bannon's and Fox News' respective attempts to defend Trump's invocation of the Alien Enemies Act. Tim Walz and Chris Murphy begin to turn the tide of how Democrats are talking about the neoliberal era, Brady from Kentucky discusses a potential run for office, and a bunch of Big Tech fraudsters lie about the “failure” of Social Security, Phil from Delaware tackles SB-21, plus, your calls and IMs! The joro spider has been discovered in Bucks County, Pennsylvania in September. The Joro Spider is about four inches long according to Michael Skvarla, Assistant Research Professor of Arthropod Identification at Penn State University. "They're kind of gray and green stripes. The males look. So that's the adult females. The males look a little bit different. They're much smaller and kind of a reddish, reddish brown color. And they're all weaver. So they build a large orb web and they sit in the middle of it. There's a similar species of related species in the same genus golden orb weavers or golden silk orb weavers that live in Florida, parts of southern Georgia, if I recall correctly. And they're similar in size and shape. They have a different color pattern to them, but they kind of do the same thing. They make a big web. They sit in that web. They don't really move from it. So draw spiders are similar, but differently colored and from a different part of the world, "said Skvarla. Joro Spiders does have venom, however, Skavarla believes it is not medically important. "They don't leave their web. And so to get bit, you have to physically go up to the web and touch or grab them. Most people aren't going to be doing that. If you do that. They're reluctant biters because most orb weavers are like, you have to really mess with them to get them to bite you. Most orb weaving spiders, if you pick it up in their web, they're going to curl their legs up and sit in your hand if you can make it bite you. The venom is weak because it's not evolved toward causing pain in mammals. It's evolved for subduing insect prey. And because of that, it doesn't elicit much of a pain response. It's maybe on par with a bee sting. There haven't been any reports of people having allergic reactions to it that. In theory could happen. People have allergic reactions to lots of things, but as far as we can tell, there's been no reports of that in their native range. So. Theoretically somebody might have an allergic reaction if they can make it bite them. But that is the only risk and it is a small one. So are they venomous? Yes. But does it matter? Not really. Not for people, at least, "said Skvarla.    Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this engaging conversation with Dr. Shanéa Thomas, a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ inclusion in education, the discussion revolves around the question of whether we are doing enough to promote inclusion in schools. Dr. Thomas shares her personal journey and professional growth, highlighting the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in the rigid binary framework of educational settings. The conversation goes beyond identifying the problems and explores potential solutions. Dr. Thomas encourages us to challenge our preconceived notions and emphasises the importance of continuously updating our knowledge about sex and gender. She suggests using platforms like TikTok as a resource for education. Dr. Thomas underscores that training and open discussions about sex and gender benefit everyone and calls for greater recognition of trans and queer individuals in our communities. About this Episodes Guest: Dr Shanéa Thomas Dr. Shanéa Thomas, LICSW (He/She/Dr.) is a bold lecturer and seasoned scholar-practitioner with more than 18 years of professional social work experience in the Washington D.C. metro area. His organization, Thomas Consulting and Therapeutic Services, main commitment is training and strategising with social workers, educators, and service providers around building safer therapeutic and educational spaces for all people. This is especially for those working in communities that are underserved and under-resourced, and those identifying as Black, Indigenous, people of color, and LGBTQ+ folks. Dr. Thomas has facilitated over 80 workshops centring on DEI needs, grief and loss, mental health, sex and gender, and LGBTQ+ populations. Dr. Thomas ended his 10-year position at the University of Southern California School of Social Work as a Senior Lecturer in 2022 to further the commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusivity through the University of Maryland School of Public Health as their new LGBTQ+ Training Specialist and Assistant Research Professor. Dr. Thomas is currently curating a national training program launching in May 2023 with the use of the Prevention Research Center's evidence-based tools to build LGBTQ+ competency in practice amongst mental health professionals.

Megan shares her unique insights and invaluable experience in managing sour rot in grapes. We also delve into her ground-breaking research on the disease and offer practical advice on how to prevent it in vineyards. We also discuss control strategies for sour rot disease, highlighting the importance of timely spraying before symptom development. Megan and Mizuho share their collective wisdom on the three primary contributors to sour rot. They then shed light on their research findings regarding the best combination of antimicrobial plus insecticide sprays. Additionally, Mizuho shares his expertise on alternative options to oxidate, such as bio fungicides, which could potentially reduce the impact on fermentation. As always, we ensure to wrap up the conversation by sharing valuable resources for our listeners, equipping grape growers with the knowledge needed to manage this challenging disease. In this episode, you will hear: Why and how sour rot occurs. The signs and symptoms of sour rot. The role that insects & microorganisms play in causing and spreading sour rot. What cultural practices play a role in prevention. Alternative products for preventing and treating sour rot.
