MapableUSA.com: Despite being around for years now, the subject of Opportunity Zones continues to be confusing for many in the industry. With a “Grand Canyon” sized gap of resources, CEO David Sillaman and his Eazy OZ team decided to create a comprehensive educational program to teach people all aspects of the program with his “Certified Opportunity Zone Advisor (COZA) Program. In this podcast, he explains how it all came to be, as well as all the other ways he is providing education and advocacy in the Opportunity Zones space.
This episode is church heavy! First, we discuss the controversies that surrounded COZA's Senior Pastor's 2020 Shiloh attendance. Should he be recognised when there are many allegations surrounding him? This lead us to our second pastor, Timi Adigun, who has been accused of teenage sexual harassment or 'inappropriate behaviour' as he called it. Lastly, what does Jo Pearl's want from Burna Boy and the public after coming out?
Openpit miner Afrimat reported an 11% year-on-year increase in operating profit for the six months ended August 31, despite a 9.4% year-on-year decrease in revenue. The company also ended the period with cash and cash equivalents of R330-million, a 170% year-on-year increase. Afrimat declared an interim dividend of 36c a share. “Our diversification strategy proved its worth, most certainly so during the pandemic; our values-based entrepreneurial culture is paying off; and a very strong balance sheet enabled growth. "In effect, a self-closing loop was created by implementing this strategy, using the cash generated by successful operations to pay down debt, and surplus cash to make further acquisitions, which in turn leads to further diversification, which in turn drives further growth,” CEO Andries van Heerden explained during the company’s results presentation on October 29. He added that what had started out as a simple construction materials business had gradually become more sophisticated with the addition of industrial minerals, and then again with the addition of iron-ore. “The potential acquisition of the Nkomati mine will add anthracite to our portfolio, thereby again enhancing our skills and our commodity diversity, while the Coza mining acquisition will further strengthen our iron-ore capacity.” Van Heerden further provided a brief update on Nkomati, saying that, as a large creditor, Afrimat had applied for business rescue proceedings, which was approved by the court. Shareholder approval has also been obtained to proceed with the proposed scheme of arrangement. “This, coupled with the high market demand for high-quality, clean burning anthracite, will add tremendous value to our bulk commodity diversification strategy. High-quality anthracite remains a sought-after product by large smelters in South Africa for metals smelting, fabrication and furnaces.” In respect of Coza, Van Heerden said the high-quality ore resource, which consists of the Jenkins, Driehoekspan and Doornpan mines located close to Afrimat’s Demaneng iron-ore mine in the Northern Cape, would give Afrimat the ability to leverage resources due to its proximity to Demaneng. “This acquisition will also potentially allow for a local product supply agreement to primary steel producer ArcelorMittal South Africa, whereas the Demaneng iron-ore mine is solely focused on the export market.” OPERATIONAL REVIEW Afrimat entered the national lockdown with a robust balance sheet, positioning the group well for the uncertainty that lay ahead. “The impact of the lockdown was dampened by the partial reopening of the Demaneng iron-ore mine and certain industrial mineral operations early during the lockdown period,” explained Van Heerden, adding that the reopening was undertaken with utmost care to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all employees. From April 20, Afrimat ramped up its operations according to market demand and in line with government regulations. All operations recovered from the Covid-19 impact and returned to profitability before August. “Our product range is now well diversified and consists of construction materials, including aggregates and concrete-based products; industrial minerals, comprising of limestone, dolomite and silica; and bulk commodities, which is currently made up of iron-ore.” The company’s Demaneng mine continued to make an "excellent" contribution to the group results, delivering a 135% increase in operating profit growth to R325-million. The performance was largely owing to favourable iron-ore pricing during the reporting period. Afrimat’s industrial minerals businesses across all regions delivered satisfactorily results. The segment was, however, affected by the lockdown and experienced a decrease in operating profit of 60% year-on-year to R24.6-million. This while the construction materials segment was impacted considerably by the national lockdown, resulting in no revenue for the month of Ap...

There was an NCC meeting on Wednesday, the state of disaster expired on Saturday and the roar against the alcohol ban was deafening. Against this backdrop, we saw the leisure and alcohol stocks running last week. Then on Saturday night, the president made the announcement, level 2. We can travel between provinces, buy alcohol and tobacco and visit friends and family. Yet Monday saw the stocks that had run hard all start giving back their gains and most are back at where they started last week. This is not surprising, a common saying in the market is "buy the rumour, sell the fact". This applies to results, mergers, takeovers and now also lockdown restrictions. The logic is that everybody thinks they're clever having spotted the potential news before anybody else and positioning themselves ahead of the news. But they're to the only ones spotting it as the price action tells us. Then when the news happens the reality is that it's actually a long road and those early buyers take their profits. For traders, the lesson is careful buying as the news breaks. Sure often the news will send a stock price still higher, but watch the price action and if the news starts to see weakness in the price, take your money and run. The other lesson is that to be early often pays, but careful of how early. Buying weeks or months ago on an eventual lifting of the ban will make a profit, but being that early means your profit is still some way off. JSE-listed ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) has reached an agreement to sell its 25% shareholding in Coza Mining, held through subsidiary Oakwood Trading, to Afrimat. Coza’s principal activities are the exploration and prospecting for iron-ore and manganese on three properties in the Northern Cape. AMSA has on numerous occasions since 2018, indicated to shareholders that a foundational element of its turnaround strategy is to diversify the supply and cost structure of its strategic raw material supply. This transaction is a contributor to that strategy. To give effect to this, AMSA has also concluded a supply agreement with Afrimat Demaneng for the supply of direct shipping ore on favourable terms for each party. Afrimat will also acquire the remaining 75% interest in Coza from other shareholders. It notes in a statement that the purchase consideration for Coza will be R300-million. The payment to AMSA will amount to about R135.75-million. Pending the granting of approval by the Mineral Resources and Energy Minister for the disposal of a controlling interest in Coza, Afrimat Demaneng will be appointed by Coza as the mining contractor to conduct the mining at the Coza mines. As part of its bulk commodities growth strategy, Afrimat has explored numerous opportunities in the Northern Cape with a specific focus of augmenting its existing footprint. For Afrimat, this transaction presents an opportunity to secure a significant high-quality iron-ore resource close to the current Demaneng operation. Moreover, it is in close proximity to existing operations to leverage existing resources. The asset also includes possible manganese resources for further exploration. It also presents the execution of a product supply agreement for the supply of direct shipping ore to AMSA.

In This Episode: I talk about a long-awaited movement that has begun in my country Nigeria, and the whole of Africa. #MeTooAfrica For many years, RAPE CULTURE has been overlooked in Africa but not anymore. Our people are finally beginning to see the importance of speaking up. I trended nationwide on the 30th June, 2019 after a Twitter thread of mine went viral. The thread detailed my infiltration of a megachurch (COZA) whose senior pastor, Biodun Fatoyinbo, was accused of rape by Busola Dakolo, the wife of musician, Timi Dakolo. I know, sounds like something out of a Hollywood movie. In this episode, I give a little more context to the events that transpired on that fateful day -- the protests, the Coza experience, how it felt to be Twitter-famous and the need to support our women during these pivotal moments in our country's history. The events of that day, earned me name, Undercoza Brother, in reference to the fact that I was undercover in Coza. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theyounggodpod/message

Who ya gonna vote for in November? Mitt? Barack? That's a political question. Here's a constitutional question: will your vote matter? Or is your state so reliably Red or Blue that your vote will be buried beneath an avalanche of the other party's votes? We'll talk about the constitutional institution at the heart of such questions: the Electoral College. We'll hear from someone who supports the College as a protection of state sovereignty. And we'll hear from someone who doesn't like the College at all, and who has a plan for effectively abolishing it -- without amending the Constitution. Listen up!
