Football audiences were shaken on January 2nd when Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest after a tackle during a Monday Night Football game. He was resuscitated on the field and then transferred to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in critical condition. Thus began a waiting period, all too familiar to neurologists, while the world wondered to what extent Mr. Hamlin's brain would recover. But remarkably, just 4 days later, Mr. Hamlin was able to communicate in writing. He was extubated the following day and discharged home on January 11th. Our guest on today's podcast, ANA Vice President and Johns Hopkins University neurointensivist Dr. Romer Geocadin, says that Mr. Hamlin's story should inspire hope... not only for families of survivors of cardiac arrest but also for researchers and physicians. Romer was interviewed by ANA Education Innovation committee Chair and UCSF Neurohospitalist Dr. Megan Richie for this special episode of ANA Investigates.... on cardiac arrest and paths to recovery. Series 4, Episode 3.
Welcome to episode #55. In all honesty, this episode is one of the most powerful yet on the podcast. This conversation about emotional intelligence, healing, and our nervous system is something I wish we were all taught in school. It's basically “how to be human 101.” I was joined by my friend and life and trauma coach, Heidi Romer. She introduces emotional intelligence, the importance of doing deep inner healing work, being aware of our emotions, and finding the ways we can manage, honor, and work through our emotions and nervous system responses in our lives. My favorite quote from Heidi from the episode is : “The first step to healing is awareness. You have to be aware of something to change it. The second thing is awareness without judgement.” There are too many powerful highlights from the conversation to list here, but here is a snapshot: We dive into our habit of avoiding our emotions, and creating an identity based on the stories we tell ourselves. Heidi shares how we stay in self-sabotaging patterns, why we stay in the uncomfortable emotions and how the uncomfortable emotions are actually what is “comfortable” because it is the emotion and story we know. How when we don't allow ourselves to feel our emotions in those traumatic experiences, they get trapped and we create an identity with those stories. She explains how breath work brings you to a state of fight or flight in order to work through how your emotions trigger a nervous system response. It teaches you to support yourself and no longer hold that emotional response to the stories we are telling ourselves. She talks about when you heal yourself, and honor your emotions, you plug your own holes in your self and don't need others to fill a void through temporary "bandaids" or validation. Instead, you are whole as you, honoring yourself, and that impacts how you relate and engage with others, therefore, shifting your relationships. You won't want to miss this episode!

“A world where there's a plethora of different kinds of society where people consent to the rules, and people have the ability to choose what kind of system they live under, is a better society for everyone.”— Peter YoungPeter Young is the managing director of the Free Cities Foundation. In this interview, we discuss the development of autonomous administrative areas around the world called ‘free cities', where new types of governance can be offered to citizens outside the control of existing states.- - - - Paul Romer, former chief economist at the World Bank and a Nobel prize winner, proposed in 2009 the concept of Charter Cities. Romer was trying to tackle the problem of stagnant investment in the Global South arising from bad governance. The solution was to evolve the idea behind special economic zones and create autonomous city-states within existing countries. The autonomy would extend to alternate legal and political systems from the host nation, and to the provision of services by private organisations. An advanced guarantor country would protect the legal rights of residents. The idea was that such cities would become trusted centres predicated on good rules, attracting investment, firms and people, the benefits of which then filter beyond the cities' boundaries into the host country. The Free City Foundation have taken Romer's idea and sought to implement it in different parts of the world. The aim is to provide citizens with alternatives to the status quo: establishing new legal, financial and municipal relationships with residents. The ideology is to reduce the size of the modern state, which is considered to act in its own self-interest at the expense of society. There are a number of different scales of initiatives for the Free City Foundation: from intentional communities to prosperity zones, all the way to Free Private Cities. Prospera in Honduras is a working example of a Free City: a new settlement on the island of Roatán is being developed within its own civil law, regulatory agencies and taxation; although it must still adhere to the Honduran constitution, international treaties and criminal law.But this is only the start: many more examples are being developed across the world. Perhaps the most innovative idea is Seasteading, where independent communities are developed in international waters, outside of the jurisdiction of existing governments. Are these initiatives viable and preferable alternatives to the nation-state? That may be too early to tell, but there is a growing number of investors who think they are the future of civilisation.- - - - This episode's sponsors:Gemini - Buy Bitcoin instantlyLedn - Financial services for Bitcoin hodlersBitcasino - The Future of Gaming is herePacific Bitcoin - Bitcoin‑only event, Nov 10 & 11, 2022Ledger - State of the art Bitcoin hardware walletWasabi Wallet - Privacy by defaultTexas Blockchain Summit - Nov 17-18, 2022 | Austin, TexasBCB Group - Global digital financial Services-----WBD553 - Show Notes-----If you enjoy The What Bitcoin Did Podcast you can help support the show by doing the following:Become a Patron and get access to shows early or help contributeMake a tip:Bitcoin: 3FiC6w7eb3dkcaNHMAnj39ANTAkv8Ufi2SQR Codes: BitcoinIf you do send a tip then please email me so that I can say thank youSubscribe on iTunes | Spotify | Stitcher | SoundCloud | YouTube | Deezer | TuneIn | RSS FeedLeave a review on iTunesShare the show and episodes with your friends and familySubscribe to the newsletter on my websiteFollow me on Twitter Personal | Twitter Podcast | Instagram | Medium | YouTubeIf you are interested in sponsoring the show, you can read more about that here or please feel free to drop me an email to discuss options.

On this Café Lauren Rome, joined me to discuss the different responses. She is the CEO and founder of Romer skincare (Pinterest, TW, FB, IG @romerskincare) . Romer Skincare is a woman-owned clean and sustainable facial skincare line that was launched earlier this year. The gender-neutral line was built after realizing there were too many products in her bathroom cabinets that weren't delivering results. She solved the hassle of cluttered choice paralysis by creating transparent, good-for-you formulas with insight into the product journey from start to finish that could be shared regardless of gender. They also recently won The Knot's 2020 Beauty Award for Best Face wash! Some listeners shared their thoughts on the topic which further raised interesting questions. Tune in as we discuss does the beauty in creating come from going back to your roots, does your background influence your career through seeing the disadvantages and creating the opportunity and subconscious involvement as to why some find it and others don't. And you the listeners will be given the opportunity to be part of next week's GET TO KNOW YOU Café, tune in, to know how. We are excited to announce Romer Skincare will be giving 15% off to our listeners when you use this promotional code: GETTOKNOWYOU15CreditsMusic- Sara Oliveira Support the show

Colorado's rafting industry plunged into one of its hardest seasons in 2020 before riding higher than ever in 2021, hosting a record number of rafters. Numbers are still being finalized, but the Colorado River Outfitters Association expects that commercial river trips taken last year total around 625,000. This year, that number is likely to fall, with minimal snowpack and economic pressures affecting water conditions and people's ability to road trip to rafting sites. Outdoors writer Jason Blevins talks to Erica Breunlin about this summer's forecast for the rafting industry and the enormous economic impact that outdoor recreation has on Colorado.
