Corrosion control is fundamental to the success of any water treatment program, but how often do we question the limitations of the tools we rely on? In this episode of Scaling UP! H2O, host Trace Blackmore welcomes back returning guest Mike Standish, Vice President of Water Additives at MFG Chemical, to explore the evolving role of maleic acid-based corrosion inhibitors in industrial water treatment. Drawing on decades of expertise, Mike shares practical insights into when — and when not — to use these innovative solutions to meet today's complex challenges. Understanding the Corrosion Control Toolbox Mike Standish opens the conversation by reframing corrosion control strategies through the lens of a toolbox analogy. With limited primary approaches — from phosphate-based to organic and metal-based chemistries — the success of corrosion management depends on matching the right tool to the right application. Mike stresses the importance of avoiding overcomplication and focusing on the fundamental chemical pathways for mild steel protection. Organic vs. Inorganic Approaches The discussion turns to the critical differences between organic and inorganic inhibitors. While inorganic phosphates remain cost-effective mainstays, organic phosphonates, including maleic acid-derived materials, offer advantages in high pH, high hardness, and oxidizing environments. Mike emphasizes that “organic” in water treatment bears no relation to natural or sustainable products, a frequent misconception among newcomers to the industry. Why Maleic Acid-Based Inhibitors Matter Maleic acid phosphonates distinguish themselves with exceptional oxidant stability, a feature increasingly necessary as continuous halogenation becomes standard practice. Mike explains the chemistry behind maleic acid derivatives and how the ability to tailor molecular structures creates flexibility for specific field conditions — such as scaling tendencies, pH control, and calcium carbonate formation risks. Best Practices for Application and Measurement Field success with maleic acid-based inhibitors hinges on proper dosage and testing. Mike shares lessons from real-world trials, emphasizing that underfeeding is a common mistake that compromises corrosion rates. Accurate differentiation between orthophosphate and phosphonate concentrations is vital for precise monitoring, and bench testing must closely simulate real-world surface-to-volume ratios to yield reliable predictions. The Future of Corrosion Control In a forward-looking discussion, Mike predicts that industry consolidation will trigger a second wave of entrepreneurial water treatment companies. His vision underscores the ongoing need for technical excellence, adaptability, and innovation in corrosion management practices as the industry evolves. This episode challenges water treatment professionals to rethink their corrosion strategies with a sharper, more informed approach. Maleic acid-based inhibitors are not a universal solution, but when applied thoughtfully, they offer powerful advantages for specific operational demands. The software, intended for creating AI images, contained malware that granted hackers access to his computer and sensitive data. The hackers stole his Disney login credentials, leading to the leak of over 44 million Disney internal slack messages, including customer information, employee passport numbers, and financial data. They also accessed his personal accounts, stealing credit card numbers, leaking his social security number, and even gaining access to his home Ring cameras.Matthew was subsequently fired from Disney after a forensic analysis of his work computer found he had accessed pornographic material, which he denies. He lost his health insurance and $200,000 in bonuses. The incident highlights the dangers of downloading software from untrusted sources and the vulnerability of personal and corporate data to sophisticated cyberattacks. Lot of people think that content from GitHub are trustworthy and they couldn't be more wrong. Matthew's case underscores the importance of strong password security, two-factor authentication, and vigilance against malicious software. He was using 1Password as his password manager but didn't have any 2FA access on it.Global Security Flaw Exposes Sensitive Employee Data and Physical Vulnerabilitieshttps://www.modat.io/post/doors-wide-open-critical-risks-in-amsA widespread security risk has been discovered involving misconfigured and exposed Access Management Systems (AMS) across numerous industries and countries. This exposure has resulted in hundreds of thousands of employee records, including personal identification details, biometric data, photographs, and work schedules, being accessible online. Additionally, the physical security of thousands of organizations has been compromised, allowing potential unauthorized entry into buildings and bypassing physical security measures. The affected sectors include construction, healthcare, education, manufacturing, oil, and government entities, with a high concentration of exposed systems found in European countries, the US, and the MENA region. The consequences of these vulnerabilities range from financial losses and regulatory penalties, such as GDPR fines, to severe breaches leading to identity theft, unauthorized access, and disclosure of confidential business information. The report emphasizes the critical need for organizations to implement robust security measures, including restricting internet access to AMS, regularly updating security patches, changing default credentials, and implementing continuous monitoring to protect sensitive data and maintain physical security.Malicious PyPi Package Pirating Deezer Music for Yearshttps://socket.dev/blog/malicious-pypi-package-exploits-deezer-api-for-coordinated-music-piracyA PyPi package named 'automslc,' downloaded over 100,000 times since 2019, has been pirating music from the Deezer streaming service using hardcoded credentials. The package bypasses Deezer's limitations and downloads full-length, high-quality audio files for offline listening and distribution, violating Deezer's terms of service and copyright laws.Security firm Socket discovered the package, noting that while it functions as a piracy tool, it also utilizes command-and-control infrastructure, potentially turning users into a distributed network. This raises concerns about the potential for the tool to be repurposed for other malicious activities. The package remains available on PyPi at the time of reporting, and users are warned of the legal risks associated with its use.Code Security Remains Crucial, Even in Hardened Environmentshttps://www.sonarsource.com/blog/why-code-security-matters-even-in-hardened-environments/A recent study demonstrates that even in hardened environments with read-only file systems, attackers can exploit file write vulnerabilities in Node.js applications to achieve remote code execution. This is accomplished by manipulating exposed pipe file descriptors, bypassing typical security restrictions. The research highlights the limitations of infrastructure hardening as a sole security measure. Attackers can leverage vulnerabilities in the application's source code, even when the underlying infrastructure is fortified. The attack involves writing crafted data structures to anonymous pipes used by Node.js's event loop, ultimately triggering the execution of arbitrary code. This technique exploits the "everything is a file" philosophy in Unix-based systems and demonstrates the importance of code security.Key findings include:* Bypassing Read-Only Restrictions: Attackers can write to pipe file descriptors, even when the file system is mounted read-only.* Manipulating Event Handlers: Attackers can craft data structures to manipulate Node.js's event handler and execute arbitrary code.* The Importance of Code Security: Infrastructure hardening alone is insufficient; vulnerabilities in the source code must be addressed. This research underscores the need for developers to prioritize code security, even in environments with robust infrastructure hardening. Vulnerabilities at the source code level can be exploited, regardless of other security measures.Google Introduces AI Scam Detection for Androidhttps://security.googleblog.com/2025/03/new-ai-powered-scam-detection-features.htmlGoogle has launched AI-powered scam detection features for Android devices, designed to protect users from conversational fraud. These features target scams that start innocently but escalate into harmful situations, as well as phone call scams using spoofed numbers.Google partnered with financial institutions to develop AI models that can identify suspicious patterns in conversations and provide real-time warnings. These models operate entirely on-device, ensuring user privacy. Users can choose to dismiss or report and block suspicious senders. The feature is enabled by default for conversations with unknown numbers.A similar AI-powered scam detection feature for phone calls is being expanded to English-speaking Pixel 9+ users in the U.S. This feature, which is optional, processes call audio ephemerally and notifies participants when it is active. These developments follow Google's announcement that over one billion Chrome users are using Enhanced Protection mode, which utilizes AI and machine learning to detect phishing, social engineering, and scam techniques. Meet the Women Behind the WOW Committee This episode features insights from six trailblazing women who are not only leaders in their respective fields but also passionate advocates for the WOW mission: Stephanie Choury, Enterprise Account Manager at Buckman Digital Water Tammy Faber Sales Director of HOH Water Technology and Co-Chair of WOW (Women of Water) Paule Genest, Director of Sales and ESG, Water and Energy at TGWT Clean Technologies, Host of the Paule-Cast and Co-Chair of WOW (Women of Water) Michelle Lunn, Marketing Director of GLA Water Consultants & Director on the AWT Board Janice Shawl, President of AMSA, Inc. a specialty chemical manufacturing company Pam Simmons, National OEM Sales Manager, Watson Marlow What is Women of Water? WOW exists to welcome, highlight, and celebrate the contributions of women in AWT. Paule Genest articulates the mission clearly: “To encourage all the women working and thriving within the industry of water technologies to come forward and contribute their time and talents to the greater good.” WOW focuses on creating a thriving community where women can belong, elevate, and positively impact AWT. Mission of the WOW Committee The mission of the WOW Committee is clear: to promote the professional development and advancement of women in the water treatment industry. By providing education, networking opportunities, and a strong support system, the committee aims to foster a diverse and inclusive environment where all members can succeed. This mission not only benefits women but also strengthens the industry as a whole by encouraging fresh perspectives and innovative approaches. Facing Challenges Head-On In every industry, women encounter unique challenges, and the water treatment sector is no exception. Pam Simmons, a dedicated member of the Women of Water (WOW) committee, sheds light on the obstacles women face and how the committee is striving to address them. Pam begins by acknowledging a reality that many women are all too familiar with the gender pay gap. According to the International Labor Organization, women globally earn about 20% less than men. This disparity is not just a number; it's a barrier that women must navigate throughout their careers. But the pay gap is only one piece of a much larger puzzle. There is also the issue of unequal opportunities, particularly in leadership. A 2022 report from Deloitte on women in the boardroom highlights that only 19% of boardroom positions are held by women. This underrepresentation speaks volumes about the challenges women face in advancing to leadership roles. For many women, the journey to the top is not just about breaking the glass ceiling; it's about finding the ladder to reach it in the first place. Career gaps present another significant hurdle. Whether its time taken off to have a baby or care for a family member, these interruptions can create substantial obstacles when women return to the workforce. Pam points out that these gaps can make it difficult for women to regain their footing and continue progressing in their careers. The struggle doesn't stop there. Navigating work-life balance is another challenge that resonates with everyone, regardless of gender, but it affects women in distinct ways. Pam reflects on how this delicate balance—or lack thereof—can leave a lasting impact on both personal and professional lives. The WOW committee is not just identifying these challenges—they are actively working to address them. Pam shares that WOW is committed to introducing resources and strategies to help women cope with these challenges. Through support, education, and community, WOW aims to empower women in the water treatment industry to not just survive but thrive. How is WOW Helping Women in the Water Industry? The WOW Committee is already making a significant impact. There are now three women on AWT's Board of Directors, the most ever in the organization's history. Stephanie Choury has seen firsthand how the inclusion of women has led to greater collaboration and innovation within the industry. She notes that the women on the Board feel they have a “seat at the table” and are making meaningful contributions alongside their male colleagues. WOW is also instrumental in providing mentorship and creating spaces for women to grow their knowledge, skills, and leadership roles. The Power of Mentorship Mentorship is central to the Women of Water (WOW) committee's mission, acting as a crucial tool for professional growth and community building. As the industry evolves, mentorship plays a key role in creating pathways for women in water treatment. Tammy Faber emphasizes the importance of mentorship, referencing Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg. Sandberg highlights that a mentor or sponsor can significantly boost career progression, yet women often lack such support. WOW addresses this gap by connecting seasoned professionals with newcomers. Tammy explains, “It's not just about an older professional helping a younger one; it's about leaning in and helping one another grow.” WOW has prioritized mentorship this year, especially with young professionals. Both mentors and mentees experience mutual growth, as Tammy shares: “The mentor-mentee relationship is so important because I can walk in a room and already know five people that maybe I only saw at technical training in March, but yet we've connected through text and email along the way. It feels like family and a safe place.” This focus on mentorship fosters a sense of belonging and a supportive network. Tammy notes, “We're a group that wants one another to succeed, and that's the power of mentor and mentee relationships.” These connections offer members a trusted group for advice and support, reinforcing that within WOW, no one stands alone. Empowering Connections: Key Takeaways from WOW's Leadership As we wrap up this insightful episode with the Women of Water (WOW) committee, our guests share powerful messages about empowerment, mentorship, and community. Michelle Lunn's closing thoughts are a beacon of encouragement: whether you're new to the industry or a seasoned professional, reaching out and connecting is crucial. Her message is clear—every woman in the industry belongs and has the potential to achieve great things. So, at the next convention or industry event, don't hesitate to introduce yourself and make connections. You have the power to excel and belong. Pam Simmons adds a call for self-awareness and openness to addressing subconscious biases in our interactions. She encourages all professionals to be mindful of how these biases might influence relationships and conversations. This self-reflection is essential for fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment. Tammy Faber challenges seasoned professionals to reach out to those who may seem hesitant or reserved. By engaging with someone who might be standing on the sidelines, you can make a significant impact. Invite them for a coffee, introduce yourself, and help them feel welcome. This simple act of kindness can make a world of difference to someone new in the room. Janice Shawl reminds us that women are a vibrant and integral part of the water treatment industry. Her message celebrates the contributions of women and underscores the importance of recognizing and valuing their presence in the field. Stephanie Choury underscores the immense value of mentorship. Whether at an industry event or in everyday interactions, extending a helping hand to others can be incredibly rewarding. She emphasizes that mentorship is a two-way street and encourages everyone to be both mentors and mentees. By fostering these relationships, we can all contribute to a supportive and thriving professional community. Paule Genest reinforces the core message of WOW: we belong, we elevate, and we are WOW. She urges everyone to help others recognize their worth and potential, creating a positive impact both within and beyond the industry. As we look at the current statistics—only 10% of surveyed AWT members are women, and a similar percentage represents women in industrial water treatment nationally—there is a clear need for continued effort. In 2024, 40% of our Scaling UP! H2O podcast guests have been women, reflecting progress and the importance of representation. Our challenge to you, Scaling UP! Nation is to connect with the remarkable women you heard from in this episode. Together, we can empower women in the best industry in the world to make a lasting impact on the water treatment industry and build a thriving, inclusive community. The challenge is…clean and organize your OWN test kit and test equipment. Previously, I've challenged you to clean your customers testing area, but today we're turning the tables. Clean your own. Your test kit should not look like Moses used it to test the waters just before he parted the Red Sea. While it does not have to look pristine and new either, it should instill confidence in those that see it that the results obtained are trustworthy and reliable. Old reagent bottles with the labels worn off, broken equipment, and a jumbled mess of bottles does not instill confidence. Your test kit and equipment are extensions of you and are critical to doing your job. They reflect upon you and your quality of output and recommendations. Show them a little tender loving care. In the end, it will make your job easier and leave a better impression upon those around you.
Strict but fair. That's the description of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority from retiring chief executive Mick Kinley. Some of the world's biggest shipping companies have been named and shamed by the regulator in recent years and their vessels banned from entering ports over sub-standard conditions or not paying crew. Speaking with characteristic Australian candour and colour, Kinley reflects on the progress made by the regulator he has led for the past 10 years and offers some advice to the International Maritime Organization where he has been a key figure for some time. As Kinley sails off over the horizon after 30 years with AMSA, Lloyd's List sits down with him to talk about his role, changes in the Australian maritime industry over the past three decades and some of the global achievements the authority has had as it seeks to protect seafarers and maintain standards in shipping.

My guest today has a long history of working and playing in some of the most rugged and remote parts of NSW. So, with a few days up his sleeve, a bit of research and the right kind of skills and experience behind him, he set off for another steep n' deep trip through Kanangra Boyd National Park, bound for Katoomba on the traditional K2K route.WARNING: The K2K route is described online as a classic 3 day trip in the southern Blue Mountains. This description was written before the fires and floods since 2019. It cannot be compared with other walks of a similar length such as the Six Foot Track, which is on well-defined management and fire trails. The K2K has always been a challenging walk that pushes the Australian Walking Track Grading System of 1-5, into an unofficial 6. That was then (before the fires) and now, it's an even more punishing route.I've written about this route before with this rescue of Chini who shared her written story.NPWS Alert re: K2K routeHeraclitus was a Greek philosopher, born around 500 BC. Now, I'm wondering if he was a bit of a bushwalker and a lover of nature, cos he's the one who said, “No man ever steps in the same river twice. For it's not the same river and he's not the same man.”He's also the one credited with saying, “the only constant is change.”Nowhere is this more evident than in nature: The turning of the seasons, the changes this brings in life cycles of plants and animals, erosion from weather, climate change, bushfires, my greying hair, you name it.And for those of us who love being out on (or off) the track, it's something that feels more obvious in recent years: there's more people, more bushfires, weather events and landslides are changing the landscapes that we love to spend time in.Learnings from this episode: Having a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) as a critical part of your packing. The importance of having a 'place to go' within yourself (eg. meditation, mindfulness, faith, etc) when faced with a crisis, helping you remain calm and make wise decisions. The value of having past experience in similar terrain you expect to encounter. Just because a track is marked online or on apps, doesn't meant it exists in the landscape. Other than the official land manager apps (eg: NPWS App) data can be out of date and user reviews or descriptions extremely subjective. Apps like AllTrails, etc should be used in conjunction with other research and navigation skills. If it's been a while between longer or hard walks, consider your overall health from other factors.Helpful Links: Episode 6 - PLBs and other satellite communication devices // My interview with Linda Berriman from AMSA (the AU govt agency responsible for rescues in Australia) Creatine Kinase (CK) testing
A man who played a key role in the R1.9 billion loss at VBS Mutual Bank pled guilty to charges of money laundering, theft, fraud, and racketeering. As part of a plea and sentencing agreement with the State, former VBS head Tshifhiwa Matodzi pleaded guilty to 33 charges on Wednesday in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria. He received a 15-year prison sentence as a condition of the agreement. In an interview with host Ray White, Pauli Van Wyk, a writer for Daily Maverick's Scorpio division, offers more background on this subject. Following ArcelorMittal SA's (Amsa) announcement that its long-running steel division will remain functioning, a significant chunk of the steel value chain as well as the manufacturing sector in South Africa have expressed relief. This story is discussed by journalist Phillipa Rodseth and anchor Ray White on Business Live. Despite the downturn in M&A markets in many countries due to rising interest rates, the importance of ESG in acquisitions has increased globally in the previous twelve to eighteen months, according to the third year of the global organization's ESG Due Diligence study. Host Ray White, speaks with Ben April, the Director of ESG Leader Africa Financial Services at KPMG, about these findings. In addition to seizing over thirty laptops for further examination, four senior DPWI managers were put on precautionary leave. This story is discussed by host Ray White and Mybroadband Editor Jan Vermeulin. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
