In July 1975, former competitors the Soviet Union and the United States both launched rockets into the sky within hours of each other, as part of a joint project. They wanted two spacecraft, from two different countries, to achieve the first international docking in space. While millions watched on TV, the cosmonauts and astronauts opened the hatches between the two vehicles and shook hands, then shared meals and conducted joint science experiments. In 2022, former NASA chief historian, Bill Barry told Nick Holland why the unique rendezvous was a turning point. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: visionary architect Antoni Gaudi and the design of the Sagrada Familia; Michael Jordan and his bespoke Nike trainers; Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal; and Görel Hanser, manager of legendary Swedish pop band Abba on the influence they've had on the music industry. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the time an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the President of the United States in protest of America's occupation of Iraq; the creation of the Hollywood commercial that changed advertising forever; and the ascent of the first Aboriginal MP.(Photo: Commander of the Soviet crew of Soyuz, Alexei Leonov (L) and commander of the American crew of Apollo, Thomas Stafford (R). 74:The Metal Maniacs Podcast : Interview with Mike Poshedly of The Wounded Touch In this episode, host Jay Ingersoll dives deep into the harsh and chaotic world of Midwestern hardcore with special guest Mike Poshedly, guitarist for the punishing hardcore outfit, *The Wounded Touch*. Known for their noisy, raw sound that pushes boundaries, The Wounded Touch has been shaking up the scene with their unique blend of distortion-heavy, emotionally charged music that demands attention. Jay and Mike discuss the origins of the band, how their sound developed, and the journey from their 2019 debut album *From This Day 0 Forward* to their most recent single *Submitted for Disapproval* (released July 2024). Mike offers insight into the writing process behind their shorter, yet impactful songs, exploring the themes of tension and release that define their sound. Fans of heavy, abrasive music will appreciate the conversation about how the band crafts their brutal sonic landscape, blending noise and groove into something distinctly Midwestern. Mike also opens up about his bandmates — Nick Holland on vocals, Ben Jenson on guitar, Jeremy Schultz on drums, and Kyle Maddock on bass — and how each member contributes to the volatile energy of the band. The discussion touches on the evolution of the band's sound, including the more melodic elements found on tracks like "Condolences and Autumn Nights" from *Americanxiety* (2022), and how they balance clean parts with relentless heaviness. Expect some in-depth talk about the gear and production choices that give The Wounded Touch their crushing tone, from guitar rigs, saturated distortion that defines their live sound. They also delve into the creative process, touching on everything from songwriting patterns and riffs to when a guitar solo finds its place in the chaos. The episode is packed with stories from the road, as Mike recounts some of the band's favorite live performances, worst show experiences, and upcoming tour plans. You'll also hear about how *The Wounded Touch* creates a captivating atmosphere during their performances and what keeps them motivated in an ever-evolving hardcore scene. For anyone interested in the DIY ethic and intense energy of hardcore, this conversation is a must-listen. Plus, Mike reveals some of his favorite hobbies outside of music and what he's currently spinning on his playlist. Whether you're a die-hard fan of *The Wounded Touch* or just discovering them, this episode offers a raw, unfiltered look into the world of one of hardcore's most interesting acts. Both seem to be stabilizing, but are very far from their beginning of the year highs. Even bigger are the stories about Luna and TerraUSD. TerraUSD is a stablecoin that is pegged to the USDollar, and managed to fall sharply under the $1 mark dragged down by Luna, which is the sister cryptocurrency. Luna has collapsed. In August 2008, Russia went to war with another former Soviet republic, Georgia. The conflict began after Georgia attempted to recapture the breakaway region of South Ossetia, which had fought a separatist war with Tbilisi during the 1990s. As fighting escalated, Russia sent in troops - seizing control of South Ossetia and also of Georgia's other breakaway region, Abkhazia. The five-day war ended in humiliation for Georgia - several towns, a Black Sea port and military airfields were bombed by the Russian air force. Several hundred people were killed and thousands of ethnic Georgians displaced. Nick Holland reports. PHOTO: Russian troops on their way to South Ossetia in 2008 (Getty Images)

In June 2012 one of the solar system's rarest of astronomical events took place, when it was possible to see the planet Venus fly past the face of the Sun. It appears when the orbits of Earth and Venus momentarily line up, but that happens only four times every 243 years. Astronomers in Australia, London and Hawaii tell Nick Holland what it was like watching the sight, one they will never get to see again because they won't be alive when it next reappears in the year 2117. Scientists are checking up on the health of forests by analysing the sounds in them. They test their vital signs by measuring the croaks, tweets and hums of resident creatures. If they can hear a full range of animals they can be confident an ecosystem is doing well. However, if gaps start to appear, it's a sign something is up. Nick Holland hears more about how it works and how it's being used to strike a balance between the needs of Papua New Guinea's growing indigenous communities and the need to preserve the biodiversity of the forests they live off. In 2005 thousands of tonnes of petrol ignited at a fuel depot 40 kilometres North-West of London. The explosion was the largest in the UK since the end of the WWII. The blast, which severely damaged surrounding homes and properties, was reportedly heard in Holland. Despite the enormous amount of damage, nobody was killed. The fire destroyed large parts of the depot, leading to shortages of fuel at petrol stations in the weeks that followed. Five firms were eventually fined millions of dollars for safety failures that led to the blast. Greg Smith tells Witness History what it was like to be inside the depot at the time of the explosion. People in Kenya have been paid to catch swarms of locusts eating farmers' crops. The insects are full of protein and the captured ones are ground up and put into animal feed. The BBC's Nick Holland and Claire Bates find out what tricks these 'locust hunters' use to catch the critters and what difference the cull makes. They also hear about a way of capturing tiny micro-plastic particles that come off car tyres and delve into a clever project feeding homeless people in Mumbai.
