La chorégraphe originaire du township de Soweto est décédée fin 2024, à l'âge de 39 ans, créant un grand vide dans le monde de la danse. Elle laisse derrière elle plusieurs relectures et réinventions de classiques européens, comme le Lac des cygnes ou Roméo et Juliette. Des danseurs continuent de préserver ses œuvres et de les partager. À Johannesburg, ce week-end du 16 mai, les spectateurs ont pu assister à sa version d'Hamlet de Shakespeare. De notre correspondante à Johannesburg,  Sur la scène du Market Theatre, les chorégraphies interprétées par la troupe portent bien l'empreinte de Dada Masilo. Les mouvements sont vifs, saccadés, explosifs ; l'histoire est racontée du point de vue féminin et les personnages défient les normes de genre. « Il est clair qu'elle nous a laissé un bel héritage. Tout le monde ressort de la salle impressionné et, même si elle nous a quittés beaucoup trop tôt, elle a incontestablement laissé une empreinte très forte », affirme Lesedi en sortant du spectacle, émue. Pour les artistes qui faisaient partie de la troupe de Dada Masilo, comme Thuso Lobeko, il aura fallu un long temps de deuil avant de parvenir à danser, à nouveau, l'un de ses spectacles : « Ça nous a pris une année entière. En 2025, on n'a rien pu faire autour du travail de Dada. On a tout arrêté et c'est seulement maintenant qu'on a décidé qu'on était prêts pour tenter de poursuivre ce qu'elle a commencé, confie-t-il. Au tout début, lors de la première semaine de répétitions, j'étais bouleversé, car j'avais l'impression qu'elle était là. Il y avait plein de petites choses qui n'arrêtaient pas de me faire penser à elle. J'espère qu'elle aurait aimé ce qu'on fait, et je sais qu'elle serait fière que l'on préserve son œuvre en continuant son travail. » À voir aussiLa chorégraphe sud-africaine Dada Masilo en un mot, un geste et un silence « Elle a transformé le monde de la danse » Ceux qui ont eu la chance de danser à ses côtés, comme Lehlohonolo Madise – choisie pour jouer Ophélie –, ont dû s'appliquer à transmettre ce style si particulier aux nouveaux venus de la troupe : « C'est un style qui mélange un peu de danse classique, avec des mouvements africains, explique-t-elle. Elle a transformé le monde de la danse, et ce qu'elle faisait était très différent de tous les autres chorégraphes du pays. » Dans Hamlet, comme dans plusieurs créations de l'artiste, l'œuvre européenne se retrouve déconstruite puis réinventée à travers un regard sud-africain. Llewellyn Mnguni, interprète de Gertrude et assistant-chorégraphe, a travaillé pendant douze ans aux côtés de Dada Masilo. « C'est comme si on allait rouvrir des archives et creuser dans nos propres mémoires, pour nous souvenir de la façon dont elle faisait ce travail, pourquoi elle créait ces mouvements et comment elle tissait des histoires ensemble, souligne-t-iel. Elle a créé une œuvre très importante et cela m'inquiétait de savoir si cela allait être préservé et si la prochaine génération pourrait en faire l'expérience. » Ce spectacle part désormais en tournée, cette semaine, en Angleterre, puis en Allemagne, avec la volonté de perpétuer l'héritage artistique de la chorégraphe regrettée. Averil Mansfield was the UK's first woman vascular surgeon and first female professor of surgery. She qualified as a surgeon in the early 1970s, at a time when only two per cent of her colleagues were female – and was often met with disbelief bordering on amusement when telling people what she did. She talks to Woman's Hour about her medical achievements, which she downplays to, ‘It's just glorified plumbing,' as detailed in her memoir ‘Life in Her Hands.' A a new app to block child abuse images has received £1.8m pounds of EU funding, with the aim to help combat what has been described as a "growing demand" for child abuse images. According to the NSPCC, child abuse image offences have reached record levels with more than 30,000 reported in the last year. It also revealed that the police have recorded the first child abuse crimes in the metaverse, with eight instances recorded last year. We hear from Rani Govinder, Senior Child Safety Online policy officer from the NSPCC and John Staines, former police officer from E-Safety Training who goes into schools to educate children and teens about online safety. Dada Masilo is a South African choreographer, who is known for her re-working of classic stories to reflect black female identity. Her latest show is called Sacrifice, inspired by Stravinksy's iconic ballet Rite of Spring is on a national tour of the UK, and will be performed at the Sadler's Wells in London this weekend. Plus the new study from the Cambridge Centre for Family Research which shows that having an older sibling helped keep children well-adjusted during lockdown. From "Giselle" to "Swan Lake" and "The Rite of Spring", South Africa's Dada Masilo deconstructs classic ballets to tell a new story, far from the stereotypical damsel in distress but that of modern-day people who suffer modern-day issues such as homophobia, gender inequality and racism. She's performed her creations all over the world – in Rome, Montreal, New York and Perth to name but a few – and her work is adored in France. Dada is in Paris with her show "The Sacrifice" at La Villette. She talks to Eve Jackson about revisiting "The Rite of Spring" and changing the ending to make it speak to the audience in 2022.

He started his formal dance training in 1990 at Moving Into Dance wherein 2002 he became the Associate Artistic Director. Maqoma has established himself as an internationally renowned dancer, choreographer, teacher and director. He founded Vuyani Dance Theatre (VDT) in 1999 when he was undertaking a scholarship at the Performing Arts Research and Training School (PARTS) in Belgium under the direction of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.Maqoma is respected for his collaborations with artists of his generation like Akram Khan, Vincent Mantsoe, Faustin Linyekula, Dada Masilo, Shanell Winlock, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Nhlanhla Mahlangu and Theatre Director James Ngcobo.Several works in his repertoire have won him accolades and international acclaim. This includes FNB Vita Choreographer of the Year in 1999, 2001 and 2002 for Rhythm 1.2.3, Rhythm Blues and Southern Comfort respectively. He received the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Dance in 2002. Maqoma was a finalist in the Daimler Chrysler Choreography Award in 2002 and in the Rolex Mentorship Programme in 2003. He is the recipient of the 2012 Tunkie Award for Leadership in Dance. In 2014 he received a “Bessie”, New York City’s premier dance award for Exit/Exist for original music composition. He served as a nominator in the 2016–2017 Rolex Arts Initiative as well as curating the 2017 Main Dance Program for The National Arts Festival. His current works ‘Via Kanana’ and ‘Cion: Requiem of Ravel’s Bolero’ were touring in Africa and Europe when Covid colosed borders and dancers were forced to return to South Africa.In 2017 Maqoma was honoured by the French Government with the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Arts & Literature) Award. In 2018 was honoured by the South African Department of Arts & Culture with the inaugural Usiba Award for dedication to dance teaching.In 2018 Maqoma collaborated with William Kentridge as a choreographer and performing in Kentridge’s opera ‘The Head And The Load’ toured to the UK, Germany, Austria, Holland and New York.In 2019 Maqoma Collaborated with Idris Elba and Kwame Kwei-Armah in the production “Tree” produced by Manchester International Festival and the Young Vic. He is also part of the selection committee for Dance Biennale Afrique Festival which was to take place in Marrakech in 2020.

Growing up in the township of Soweto, Dada Masilo never thought to dream of ballet training or world tours. She liked street dancing to Michael Jackson and was only introduced to ballet two years after the end of Apartheid, at the age of 10. It was a strange world, she says, of pink shoes and tights. But she loved the discipline and went on to train internationally as a classical ballerina. Still only 34, she now tours the world with her very contemporary takes on traditional ballet. Her Swan Lake tackled Africa’s AIDs epidemic with male dancers playing the love triangle. Her Giselle is a feminist revenge story conceived long before #MeToo. She’s celebrated at Arts festivals from Perth to California, but the themes of her work make it less welcome in parts of Africa.

The South African choreographer Dada Masilo sits down with us to discuss her life and work in our very first episode of Still Spinning, The Joyce Theater's podcast on dance and the creative process. Dada Masilo has taken the world by storm with her reimagined versions of classic ballets, which she imbues with a characteristic blend of ballet, contemporary dance and traditional African styles.
