On this episode, we discuss books set in or about the outdoors, one of the prompts on the Winter-Spring 2024 Books & Bites Bingo reading challenge. We recommend a memoir by a teenage naturalist and environmental activist; a popular YA dystopian novel; and a horror novel set in Rockcastle County, Kentucky. Carrie's PickDiary of a Young Naturalist is by Dara McAnulty, a young autistic writer, environmental activist, and naturalist from Northern Ireland who began writing the book when he was just fifteen years old. It chronicles one year in his life, from winter to spring. In lyrical prose, Dara writes about his experiences in nature with his family, his work as a climate activist, and what it's like to be autistic. Pairing: Kale and Bean Stew from Rachel's Irish Family Food by Rachel Allen, available on Hoopla.Jacqueline's PickThe Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is an award-winning dystopian, action-adventure YA novel. The districts of Panem must send two people (tributes) between the ages of twelve and eighteen to compete to the death in the tournament known as the hunger games.Main character Katniss Everdeen volunteers to compete in the hunger games when her younger sister Prim is chosen to be a tribute for their district. Can she survive the games? Even if she survives what will it cost her?Pairing: Fresh Dandelion Greens Salad with Dandelion Dressing.Michael's PickIn Jenny Kiefer's This Wretched Valley Clay, a geology student at UK, discovers a pristine cliff face in Rockcastle County, Kentucky, and puts together a group of climbers to document the first climb of this rock face. Seven months later, one of the climbers is missing, and the rest have been found dead in the Kentucky wilderness. To piece together what transpired we go back to that fateful spring as the group treks into the woods of Rockcastle County.Pairing: Enjoy a refreshing Kentucky Mule after a hike through This Wretched Valley.

Envisioning a future colored by a worsening ecological crisis makes for a despairing picture, but how can we find ways to keep our hearts open amid destruction? How can we express an authentic love for the living world in ways that invite others into a space of reverence? In this week's podcast, we're featuring a conversation from 2021 with Irish writer, naturalist, and activist Dara McAnulty. This week we're re-sharing our interview with Irish teenage author, naturalist, and conservationist Dara McAnulty. His debut book, Diary of a Young Naturalist—which he wrote at the age of fourteen, and which is in part an intimate portrait of his love of the living world and his distress at its destruction—is a testament to the power and importance of joy, a joy that encircles his relationship with nature. In a world where many are incentivized to act out of fear, Dara's instinct to wonder at all that unfolds around him feels regenerative—a return to the essence of our connection with the living Earth. In this conversation we spoke about the importance of approaching living in an era of crisis from a place grounded in joy, and his realization that writing, music, and art can be activism. What journey did Steve go on when writing Neurotribes? How was autism first developed? What is the Geek Syndrome? In this episode of the Thoughty Auti Podcast, Thomas Henley is joined by Steve Silberman to talk about the history and future of autism - Steve is a multi-award winning writer, former writer for Wired and Ally Of The Year award winner for his contributions to the autistic community! They start of the podcast talking about two authors Steve had involvement with during the development stages of their books - Alex Riley in A Cure For Darkness & Dara McAnulty in Diary Of A Young Naturalist - and the background to these standout writers. With the daunting reality of COVID-19, Steve highlights the sly endorsements of eugenics during the pandemic, further exploring the affect COVID has had on the autistic people. In a welcome discussion, the two talk about the recent topic of self diagnosis and Steve's recent award... the Samuel Johnson Prize. Steve started his research into autism following a tech giant cruise across the Alaskan Panhandle where he met the renowned Larry Wall, the inventor of the innovative programming language PERL. In an investigative piece ‘The Geek Syndrome' Steve ignored the ramblings of scared parents around the ‘epidemic of autism' in Silicon Valley, pressing on to look at the strengths demonstrated by autistic tech entrepreneurs. Steve became obsessed with autism and its complex history, pouring his heart, soul and money into the formation of Neurotribes. Highlighting the misconceptions around the conceptualisation of Aspergers Syndrome and the little known past of Asperger's Jewish colleagues, the two delve into the developments that may lie in the future.
