With the arrival of my baby daughter, I'm taking a month off podcasting. Each week I am selecting some of my favourite episodes, and republishing them here :) Episode #14 with Joshua Mantz. This is one incredible podcast episode. I was truly moved and honoured to have Josh on the show. Josh served as a platoon leader and was shot and killed by an enemy sniper. He flatlined for 15 minutes (yes you read that right) before being brought back to life. We discuss what went on in those 15 minutes and the decade long emotional struggle he would endure as he sought to find meaning in a “second life.” About Joshua: Josh was serving as a Platoon Leader with the 1st Cavalry Division in Iraq when he was shot and killed by an enemy sniper. The bullet first severed the aorta of one of his men before ricocheting into Josh’s leg and severing his femoral artery. He went on to flatline for 15 minutes before being revived by the medical team, and retains full recollection of the event. Physically, Josh made a complete recovery and continued to excel in his career. But internally, he was collapsing. He’d soon come to understand that his near-death experience would pale in comparison to the decade long emotional struggle he would endure as he sought to find meaning in a “second life.” It took traveling down many dangerous paths, false starts, suicidal spirals, and bouts of depression before Josh uncovered the truth behind trauma. He found that many of the things that plagued him had little to do with the experience of dying itself. Instead, the void he was experiencing was being driven by guilt, shame, and the microscopic details of events that didn’t even seem to be traumatic on the surface. It’s this experience that has ignited a passion in Josh for helping others grappling with emotional trauma, and now informs his work within Darker Souls. He is a firm believer that all of us have the strength to overcome our experiences and regain control over our lives. I had a conversation with one of my grad school cohorts Josh Mantz about his book The Beauty of a Darker Soul: Overcoming Trauma Through the Power of Human Connection. Josh is a former army major who was shot and killed by a sniper and flatlined for fifteen minutes, and was brought back to life. Four months later he was back on deployment, and a year and half later he was on a national public speaking circuit and was able to leverage his story as part of a military initiative to empower others to access mental/behavioral health treatment. The years following his death/rebirth, or his "second life", presented Josh with emotional challenges that led him to write this book dealing with themes of shame and trauma. And, we talked about Josh's astrology. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Jason "Overcome" Redman and Ray "Cash" Care interview retired US Army Major Josh Mantz. Josh is the author of "The Beauty of a Darker Soul" and founder of Asymmetric Mind Consulting. Josh has an absolutely incredible story of being KILLED by an enemy sniper in battle in Iraq in 2007. Miraculously, after 15 minutes with no pulse, an incredible medical team did the unthinkable and brought Josh back to life. Despite this incredible miracle, Josh spiraled down with survivors' guilt and depression before hitting rock bottom. He began a spiritual journey to understand the mind and how we as humans process physical, mental and emotional trauma which is captured in his book. Additionally Josh is now focused on helping others through his company Asymmetric Mind where he talks to medical professionals and companies on how to deal with and overcome trauma. We dive into the Word of the Day - Trust - and how this word drives Josh to make a difference. Available On: iTunes | Google Play | Stitcher | Spotify Josh Mantz graduated from West Point in 2005 and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Valor while serving in combat in Iraq. In 2007, Josh died after suffering a gunshot wound in Baghdad, only to be miraculously revived by an expert medical team after his heart stopped for a full fifteen minutes. To chronicle his journey back from the dead to a place of truly living, Josh wrote his #1 best-selling book, The Beauty of a Darker Soul. The book carries a universal message about trauma that empowers people to transcend through their most challenging experiences. From Andy: The most compelling part of Josh's story is, of course, his experience with death (he remembers every detail of the last few minutes of his life.) But after peeling some layers back, it becomes clear that that was just the start of his journey. Today, after working through his own demons, he is committed to helping others through their mental, emotional, and spiritual crises, in addition to their physical trauma. THE MAN WITH TWO LIVES Conquering death has been man’s dream since the beginning of time. Today’s podcast guest is a man who literally conquered death. Josh Mantz was a brave young American soldier deployed in Iraq. One day on patrol, a sniper bulled killed him. He flatlined for 15 minutes. What does that mean? It means that Josh was officially dead for a quarter of an hour before medics revived him. Was it a miracle? Who can say? I can’t. What I can say for sure is that Josh Mantz defied science by coming back to life after a prolonged flatline. Medical experts tell us that the chances of surviving beyond 6 minutes is rare. Here is another amazing fact. People who come back to life after the six minute mark do so with major brain damage. Not Josh Mantz. If you are really interested in meaningful change and challenging your limiting beliefs, listen to this podcast. You will learn about: The real meaning of courage The peace and power of absolute surrender Commitment and true teamwork Compassion as the key to counterinsurgent warfare Trust as the most powerful weapon against evil The power of a peak experience to dramatically change your story One of the most valuable lessons in this podcast is the importance of getting beyond judgement and prejudice. Josh Mantz’s riveting true story will inspire and elevate you, and enrich your view of life and the world. Scott A. Huesing is a retired United States Marine Corps Infantry Major with 24 years of honorable service, both enlisted and as a commissioned officer. His book, Echo in Ramadi, is a ten-month snapshot in time that changed the face of operations on the battlefield; a captivating story of Echo Company, 2d Battalion, 4th Marines during the Second Battle of Ramadi in support of the Multi-National Forces (MNF) Surge Strategy in 2006. His true-life account provides keen insights into what may be an unfamiliar world to readers, but very familiar to those, like Scott, who lived it and endured this historic fight. Echo in Ramadi was written to honor the sacrifices and spirit of his Marines and the families they supported – it is his tribute to them and his honor to tell this great story. Readers will feel the pain, emotion, laughter, intensity, and friction that Scott describes in unvarnished detail. Scott shares the struggles he had writing his book and how he overcame having his computer stolen which had his only copy of his first draft of the book. He also talks about how his book was picked up by a traditional publisher and the importance of reaching out when writing a book Scott and I first connected because of a mutual friend and guest on episode 08 Major (ret.) While serving as a Platoon Leader with the 1st Cavalry Division in Iraq, Joshua Mantz was shot and killed by an enemy sniper. He flatlined for 15 minutes before being revived. That 15 minutes, and the decade-long period of turbulent healing that came in its wake, formed the basis for the work that has come to be the focal point of Mantz’s second life. What does it really mean to survive? How can those of us who have experienced trauma recover from that frontline and regain control over our lives? According to Mantz, “The only force of nature powerful enough to overcome the emotional impacts of traumatic events is a strong sense of community and human connection.” Charting his brave passage through the harrowing realms of emotional disturbance, The Beauty of a Darker Soul offers a pathway to reemergence, aiming to give others the strength to overcome their own experiences. Having shared his story at TEDx and hundreds of other events, Mantz’s next stop is our Thursday Night Soapbox! Join us for a presentation and book signing of this important new work. Over the past few weeks, we've talked to some incredible warriors with powerful stories and huge hearts. I've come up with three things that I'm going to do to help me develop a warrior's heart, and I hope you'll join me. I'm also going to challenge all of you to share how these Warriors have encouraged you: Create an Instagram story sharing how any of the guests I've had on my show have impacted you. Tag me: @theimpactmike Find mentors – Each of our guests developed strong relationships with mentors from an early age, and continue to cultivate those kinds of relationships to this very day. Mentors matter because they can accelerate your success, and they can do that in three ways: Showing you the path. Helping you understand and adapt to the environment. Quickly identifying opportunities and threats. Don't fall victim to the “comparison conundrum” – Each of our journeys is intensely personal, and it's because of that very fact that we need to fight the tendency to compare ourselves or our experiences to others. Comparison will do nothing but steal our joy. Here's how we can kick that habit to the curb: Choose to – because our choices are incredibly powerful. Develop greater self-awareness so we can easily identify situations that may cause us to compare ourselves or our experiences to others. Practice gratitude, because it kills negativity. Begin taking inventory of our skills. We all possess talents and strengths, and they don't have to be huge things. Embrace imperfection. Enjoy the journey! When you're fully present in the moment, you're able to enjoy the process of growth. Say NO to the comfort zone – You don't have to be the biggest person or the smartest person, but you do have to have what Jason Redman calls a “No Quit Attitude.” You must drive forward, find a way to accomplish your mission, reach your goal, and never quit. We all want to be confident, but the only way we can develop our confidence and grow is if we take action, try new things, embrace failure, and learn from it. It's only in the possibility for failure that you'll find the possibility for incredible amounts of success, growth, and development. In the next episode, we'll be starting The Creative Mindset Series, which will feature some incredibly talented artists and musicians from a variety of mediums. You'll learn a tremendous amount about entrepreneurship by hearing how they approach and deploy their craft on a daily basis. -- Previous episodes in The Warrior's Heart series: Ep. 82 – Revealing the Beauty of a Darker Soul – with Josh Mantz Ep. 83 – Overcoming Trauma & Finding Meaning in Suffering – with Josh Mantz Ep. 84 – A Warrior's Grit: Forging (and Reforging) a Navy SEAL Leader – with Jason Redman Ep. 85 – Lessons Learned at 45,000 Feet: The 1st Female F-14 Fighter Pilot – with Carey Lohrenz -- We are brought to you by the Lawton Marketing Group, a full service advertising and design agency serving companies and entrepreneurs at all levels. This week we kick off our series about The Warrior's Heart with Josh Mantz, who was shot and killed in Iraq but came back to life – now he's on a mission to help veterans and non-veterans alike recover from the emotional wounds that severe trauma can cause. Two mentors and role models had a significant influence on Josh's life, and his decision to be a soldier. The first was his stepfather, a police officer and former infantry officer who brought Josh into a military and police family. He had an incredible positive influence on Josh's life, and got him thinking about the military as a possibility. Second was a gentleman named Sergeant Major Doug Van Der Pool. After retiring from the special forces, where he ran anti-drug operations in South America, he took over the Junior ROTC program at a small high school in Pennsylvania. SGM Van Der Pool and Josh's stepfather drove home the importance of appreciating foreign cultures, appreciating the capacity of human beings wherever they come from, learning language, understanding cultural norms, and understanding empathy. Josh entered West Point in 2001 and graduated in 2005. His class is considered “the class of 9/11” because they were freshman on that fateful day, and four years later there was no doubt that they would be sent to fight. Josh and the other cadets wanted to quit the academy – not to leave the fight, but to enlist and ship off immediately – but, for the most part, they waited and graduated. The Day Josh Died Because Josh majored in Arabic, his unit was partnered with the local Iraqi police force and tasked with training them. One day, they were on a humanitarian mission to deliver school supplies. The operation went off without a hitch, and the Iraqi police did a great job. On the way back, a RPG was fired at an American unit. While investigating, they noticed a suspicious vehicle driving in the area. They stopped the car, and then they were engaged by an enemy sniper. A bullet ripped through the aorta of the Staff Sergeant and then severed Josh's femoral artery. At first, Josh didn't know he was shot. Time and sound were distorted. “I could only hear the muted sound of the sniper shot and my own voice calling for a medic.” Despite a brilliant evacuation effort, Josh started to die. “I consciously knew that was it. I took my last breath, said my last thought, and I died.” His last thought was, “Please take care of them.” Two days later, Josh woke up in the green zone. He had flatlined for 15 minutes straight and, while he survived, his Staff Sergeant did not. “I would soon come to learn that the experience of dying would pale in comparison to the decade-long emotional struggle that I'd go through as I sought to find meaning in a second life.” The Beauty of a Darker Soul: Overcoming Trauma Through the Power of Human Connection Trauma isn't always what it seems. It took almost a decade of struggle for Josh to uncover the meaning in his second life – and to admit that the experience of dying wasn't the source of his trauma… It was the guilt in his ability to heal when so many others in the hospital couldn't. This may seem like an unimportant distinction, but when it comes to the resolution of trauma, it's incredibly important to do the forensic investigation and piece the sequence of events back together, in context. Josh wrote his upcoming book, The Beauty of a Darker Soul, to help others uncover and validate the true source of their pain, too, and to give them a shared language they can use to express that pain productively. Emotionally traumatic experiences are prevalent in our society, but few people understand the power they can have over our lives. The darkest demons that emerge from these experiences are often the most subtle and difficult to uncover. They can drive us into isolation, make us feel distant from the world, and leave us living within a deep emotional void that seems impossible to overcome. Darker Souls emerged out of a need to help people understand the depths of trauma so they can regain control over their lives. As we start to emerge from these experiences, they will begin to add a new level of perspective and meaning to our lives. The process to get there is difficult and painful, but the journey is absolutely worth it. There will come a time when you’ll realize that you’ve become stronger and more powerful than the experience itself. http://darkersouls.com/ Like this episode? We want your feedback.
