With the arrival of my baby daughter, I'm taking a month off podcasting. Each week I am selecting some of my favourite episodes, and republishing them here :) Episode #14 with Joshua Mantz. This is one incredible podcast episode. I was truly moved and honoured to have Josh on the show. Josh served as a platoon leader and was shot and killed by an enemy sniper. He flatlined for 15 minutes (yes you read that right) before being brought back to life. We discuss what went on in those 15 minutes and the decade long emotional struggle he would endure as he sought to find meaning in a “second life.” About Joshua: Josh was serving as a Platoon Leader with the 1st Cavalry Division in Iraq when he was shot and killed by an enemy sniper. The bullet first severed the aorta of one of his men before ricocheting into Josh’s leg and severing his femoral artery. He went on to flatline for 15 minutes before being revived by the medical team, and retains full recollection of the event. Physically, Josh made a complete recovery and continued to excel in his career. But internally, he was collapsing. He’d soon come to understand that his near-death experience would pale in comparison to the decade long emotional struggle he would endure as he sought to find meaning in a “second life.” It took traveling down many dangerous paths, false starts, suicidal spirals, and bouts of depression before Josh uncovered the truth behind trauma. He found that many of the things that plagued him had little to do with the experience of dying itself. Instead, the void he was experiencing was being driven by guilt, shame, and the microscopic details of events that didn’t even seem to be traumatic on the surface. It’s this experience that has ignited a passion in Josh for helping others grappling with emotional trauma, and now informs his work within Darker Souls. He is a firm believer that all of us have the strength to overcome our experiences and regain control over our lives. Lt. Gen. Michael Ferrier, who is president and CEO of the National Veterans Memorial and Museum in Columbus, said veterans have many important lessons to offer during the global coronavirus pandemic. For instance, Ferriter said, there are several corollaries between veterans that have been through during their deployments to what those on the front lines and first responders are experiencing right now during the Covid-19 pandemic. "Veterans can relate to that and veterans can be a part of (helping with) that," said Ferriter, who is Columbus Business First's latest guest on its new Crisis Management podcast. So even though the doors of the physical museum and memorial have been closed since March 13, Ferriter said his team immediately sprung into action to take its programs virtual. The organization has hosted webinars on "resiliency, strength and wellness," featuring veterans with powerful stories to share, including Purple Heart recipient Joshua Mantz, a retired U.S. Army major who is a leading speaker on psychological trauma. Its services to veterans are also going online. The museum attracted 7,000 people from across the country to attend its virtual "Rally Point" program, which usually attracts between 75 to 100 people in person and is meant to provide veterans with fellowship and support. Ferriter said said the Covid-19 experience has allowed the opportunity to "let loose the creativity of my team." "We are open, we are supporting and connecting, and we are impacting the lives of many," Ferriter said.

Have you ever felt stuck? That you’re “just” a teacher, dad, stay-at-home mom, accountant… That there’s more for you to achieve? Or are you achieving what you set out for, but still don’t feel fulfilled? My guest today reminds us that your definition of success needs to change with you and with time… + will give you tips on how to get “unstuck” today. Laura Gassner Otting is the author of Limitless: How to Ignore Everybody, Carve Your Own Path and Live Your Best Life. Our conversation will free you to see the endless possibilities within your life + give you tips to uncover them. Entrepreneur, executive headhunter, nonprofit developer + past White House appointee, Laura shares energetic insights from her experience that will help you redefine success + live inspired. SHOW NOTES What does success mean for you?  We feel the need to justify our decisions because we are limited by other's definition of success. Figure out what success means for you + lean into that with everything you have. We judge our life bloopers by looking at everyone's highlight reels on social media. Limitless: when you're at your very best; when everything that you've been called upon is solving the problem at hand; when you're in alignment. Confidence is harmony: what you do matches who you are. Work/Life Alignment: you can be the person that you are in all parts of your life. Your definition of success must change along with you + with time. Learn your definition of success with Laura's Limitless Life Assessment. Four areas of confidence make you feel limitless: Calling Connection Contribution Control Connection: is your daily work leading you to your calling? Do you have sightlines as to why the work you're doing matters?  If your work is not matching your calling, ask yourself, "what needs to happen?" If you don't have sightlines to your calling, find ways to gain a deeper connection. Lean in:  Do everything you possibly can to be successful. More importantly, realize you can redefine success. Create space to define what success means for you by prioritizing your need for calling, connection, contribution, and control at every stage of life. Embrace "sidequests".  Small things that are not on the route to your main quest prepare you for your main quest. Builds confidence through competence. Laura shares how Joshua Mantz, Iraqi military serviceman, achieved limitlessness because he let go of other's expectations for him to become the person he was born to be. Listen to his TEDx here. Failure is not the finale. Failure is the fulcrum. Get Laura Gassner Otting's book Limitless here. LAURA GASSNER OTTING'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Stones from the River by Ursula Hegi. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? I talked to strangers more often. I was more extroverted. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? My husband writes me a letter every year on our anniversary. They are a chronical of our 23 years together. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? My children's future selves, the people that they've become after I'm long dead. I want to know how the story turns out. 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? "You're just not that important." I was working hard to be all things to all people and not actually being present for anybody. You're not that important to everything. Figure out where you are that important and double down there instead. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Write your plans in pencil, because even if you think you know yourself (and you don't!), the world around you is going to change, be flexible.  7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? My life was better because she was part of it.  *** Did you enjoy today's episode? Subscribe, rate + review on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts! While serving as a Platoon Leader with the 1st Cavalry Division in Iraq, Joshua Mantz was shot and killed by an enemy sniper. He flatlined for 15 minutes before being revived. That 15 minutes, and the decade-long period of turbulent healing that came in its wake, formed the basis for the work that has come to be the focal point of Mantz’s second life. What does it really mean to survive? How can those of us who have experienced trauma recover from that frontline and regain control over our lives? According to Mantz, “The only force of nature powerful enough to overcome the emotional impacts of traumatic events is a strong sense of community and human connection.” Charting his brave passage through the harrowing realms of emotional disturbance, The Beauty of a Darker Soul offers a pathway to reemergence, aiming to give others the strength to overcome their own experiences. Having shared his story at TEDx and hundreds of other events, Mantz’s next stop is our Thursday Night Soapbox! Join us for a presentation and book signing of this important new work. He went on to flatline for 15 minutes before being revived by the medical team, and retains full recollection of the event.   It’s this experience that has ignited a passion in Josh for helping others grappling with emotional trauma, and now informs his work within Darker Souls. He is a firm believer that all of us have the strength to overcome our experiences and regain control over our lives.Support the show (https://www.milestonemind.com/donation)
