In this episdoe Kathleen shares about her struggle between her left-brain approach to UFO research and her more recent attempts using non-conventional methods, which really began with stuying alleged alien communications through "contactee" Kevin Briggs. Marden also critques AARO (All-Domain Anomoly Resolution Office); and reveals why full disclosure of an ET presence may not, sociologically, be a smart approach. Kathleen discusses surveys she was involved with which indicated that people of faith would be more open to ET contact than atheists or agnostics - a conclusion I personally struggle to understand.Kathleen Marden's lifelong pursuit of UFO and extraterrestrial contact research stems from her personal connection to the 1961 Betty and Barney Hill abduction. This experience ignited decades of dedicated investigation, archival research, and advocacy, including placing the Hills' records at the University of New Hampshire. With a background in education and sociology, she transitioned into a leading UFO researcher and author, contributing significantly to MUFON's Experiencer Research Team and participating in four large-scale studies on experiencers. Marden's extensive publications, include two editions of Captured! The Betty and Barney Hill UFO Experience, Science Was Wrong (also published in Chinese) and Fact, Fiction, and Flying Saucers, The Alien Abduction Files, Extraterrestrial Contact: What to do When You've Been Abducted (also published in French), and two editions of Forbidden Knowledge. Her work as an advocate highlights her commitment to understanding and supporting individuals who have experienced contact with non-human entities. She has appeared as an on-camera expert on sixty two television and video productions, and innumerable radio shows, and podcasts. Additionally, she has lectured at conferences across the United States and in several foreign countries. Welcome to episode 197 with Kevin Briggs, who is a retired sergeant for the California Highway Patrol, known as the "Guardian of the Golden Gate Bridge”. The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the one-mile-wide (1.6 km) strait connecting San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean in California. It's about 200 feet above the water and there are 6 lanes of traffic that cross the bridge as well as a separate pathway for pedestrians and cyclists. It is one of the most famous landmarks in the world, partly because of the incredible architecture but also because it's reputation as a suicide hot spot. Part of Kevin's job, as part of the Highway Patrol was to respond to calls for anyone attempting suicide by jumping from the bride. He was the person responsible for talking them back over the railing and keep them safe. It's estimated that Kevin helped around 200 individuals over his 20 years on the force. In this episode I chat to Kevin about joining the force and how, as a new police officer, he had to learn very quickly how to talk people off the bridge despite having no formal training in this at all. We chat about what it was like to do this 4 or 5 times a month, just as part of his job and how his approach changed over the years. We chat about how to talk to someone about suicide and the importance of actually listening and the difference between having these conversations in day to day life versus having them on a ledge, more than 200 feet above water. We also chat about the picture of Kevin talking a man off the edge of the bridge, how that day played out and what it was like when that photo became famous all over the world. I'm sure you've seen that photo; it does the rounds on social media all the time! It was incredible to chat to Kevin about that day and also all the other days and the work he does now. He has so much experience in this space and so much knowledge and it was a real pleasure to chat! This week the books are 'You Are Deathless: A Near-Death Experience Taught Me How to Fully Live and Not Fear Death' by Nicole Kerr and 'Spiritual Consciousness - A Personal Journey' by Kevin Briggs.Nicole KerrIf death is an end, then I know for certain there is nothing final about it.When Nicole Kerr hit the ground, she thought: I am going to die, yet death is not supposed to happen this way. I am just 19 years old. I still have things to do, places to go, deadlines to meet, so I cannot be dead. I don't have time to be dead. Still, I think I am. This must be death. Rays of brilliant white light flood me from all sides. Streams of light cocoon me, wrapping every part of my being in a chrysalis of soothing waves. Instead of the pain of impact, I feel rocked and held. This is bliss. No fear. All of us fear death. For most of us, that fear remains below the surface of conscious awareness most of the time. What is fear if not the body's reaction to the possibility of its own end? Eventually, you will die, so why, then, does Nicole Kerr make the audacious claim that you are deathless? In the book You Are Deathless, Nicole Kerr shares her journey about awakening to herself and the transforming work of aligning her soul, spirit, mind, and body. Through her own death, Nicole was forced to shed ascribed identities, such as being a people-pleaser, to instead develop an authentic, loving relationship with herself and God.Her story proves that we can put to death the punishing, angry God that man created. This allows the beautiful God of love and acceptance whom she encountered in her own death to emerge and accompany us in day-to-day life.Nicolebeautifully presents how her NDE was actually an STE: A Spiritually Transformative Experience. This aligns with the ten most common NDE lessons (Source: IANDS 2020 Annual Report), the first of which is We do not die. Nicole has persevered through enormous suffering and pain to create the life she now loves.Nicole has seen what awaits you at the end of this life because she's been there, and she can assure you that it's a new beginning more beautiful than you can now comprehend. A good death begins today, and with it, a great life. Through Nicole's death experience, you can learn how to live your life to the fullest. You can engage in your own metamorphosis without having to die like Nicole did.Award-winning health expert Nicole Kerr is the co-author of Eating the Rainbow: Lifelong Nutritional Wellness—Without Lies, Hype, or Calculus. She has appeared on CNN, PBS, CBS, ABC, the Food Channel, and a host of other TV and radio shows to share her unique perspective on wellness, lifestyle, and nutrition.NICOLE KERRFor the past 30 years, Nicole has worked in all sectors of society, including in government (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), non-profit (American Cancer Society), military (United States Air Force Medical Operations), academia (University of Hawaii), healthcare institutions/hospitals (Adventist Health Castle and Queens Medical Center), corporate settings (Sea Ties, LLC), and private consultation. Nicole's warm, engaging presentations have earned her a place in front of international audiences ranging from corporate food producers to health and medical associations. Throughout her career, she has focused on supporting people from every walk of life to make realistic, meaningful, happy choices for lifelong health and well-being.When she was a 19-year-old cadet at the United States Air Force Academy, Nicole would be forced to learn how to live and love differently following a terrifying and transformative Near-Death Experience. Her memory of the crash came back 20 years later, and it has taken Nicole almost another two decades to align her soul, spirit, mind, and body, proving healing is certainly a non-linear process.A disabled veteran, Nicole now maintains a private practice primarily using Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) targeting the often overlooked domains of emotional, energy, and spiritual well-being. https://www.amazon.com/You-Are-Deathless-Near-Death-Experience-ebook/dp/B0B9V99DLR/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1663922513&sr=8-1https://www.nicolekerr.com/Kevin BriggsBMK Publishing is proud to offer Spiritual Consciousness as a nonfiction book. It is these experiences that he encounters that are important. They are experiences that many people dont have, but if you do, then dont be fearful. Embrace them and learn. Season 2: Race and Voting Rights Episode 2: Barriers and Impact Factors In this second episode of our season-long look at race and voting rights, we take a look at some of the systemic barriers and impact factors related to race and voting. Host the Rev. Kathy Walker is joined by Professor Irving Joyner, professor of law at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) School of Law and legal commentator for local, state and national media; and Kevin Briggs, a research fellow with The Episcopal Church's Office of Government Relations.
If you want to learn how to sit with someone in the darkest of times, you could learn a lot from hearing from someone who has done it. Hundreds of times. Retired Sgt. Kevin Briggs is a suicide-loss survivor, a person living with depression, and someone who has sat in the darkness with many who had lost hope, listening with patience and compassion. This 16-minute episode could help you be there for someone in need.
Take the time to listen to someone in need.Philippians 2:4Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
My guests today are Kevin Briggs and Kevin Berthia. While you might not know the name, they have gone viral on social media countless times in the last 10 years or so. Kevin Berthia is a suicide survivor and prevention advocate. Kevin was born with a genetic major depression disorder. In 2005, at the age of 22, Kevin attempted to take his own life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. It wasn't until 8 years after his attempt that Kevin was reunited with the officer who talked him back to safety. Officer Kevin Briggs graduated from the California Highway Patrol Academy in 1990. In 1994 he began patrolling the Golden Gate Bridge, estimating that he had dissuaded roughly two people per month from committing suicide. Kevin Berthia is one of those survivors. Today, we are fortunate to have both Kevin Briggs and Kevin Berthia on the show to share their story. Kevin Briggs has stood, sometimes for hours late at night, in the freezing cold mist on the Golden Gate Bridge. The routine became all-too familiar for Kevin. Talking to someone who had climbed the barrier of San Francisco's iconic bridge and who was about to jump to the choppy waters below. With no formal training in negotiation, or how to handle depression or suicide, he would carefully navigate conversations with these individuals who stood there in the wind at the lowest point in their life. What's remarkable about Kevin story, is how effective him just listening to these people was. Over his career he talked approximately 600 people down from the bridge, and sadly lost two. In this interview, Kevin tells me about the people he encountered and what brought them to the bridge. We also talk about the effect this kind of work has had on him, and what advice he has to others who are feeling suicidal, or know someone who is. In this interview, we talk about people who were suffering in the depths of depression, and some people may find parts upsetting. If you are affected by depression or suicide, please talk to someone. You can start by checking out one of these links below. There will be someone like Kevin there to listen to you, and help you with what you are going through. https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/feelings-symptoms-behaviours/behaviours/help-for-suicidal-thoughts/https://mentalhealth.org.nz/conditions/condition/suicide-coping-with-suicidal-thoughts
On March 11, 2005, twenty two year old Kevin Berthia stood on a narrow pipe on the outside railing of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, 220 feet above the cold water of the bay. Kevin, who had struggled most of his life with a major depression disorder, woke up feeling hopeless that morning and could only think about stopping the pain he was feeling. A recent job loss and mounting bills had pushed him to his limit. As Kevin was preparing to carry out his plan, he suddenly heard a voice call out to him. That voice belonged to California Highway Patrolman, Kevin Briggs. Over the next ninety two minutes, Officer Briggs provided a caring, listening ear and offered words of hope to Kevin Berthia. At first, Kevin felt anger toward the voice on the other side of the railing because it was interrupting his plan to get out of pain. However, things began to change the longer Kevin spoke and Officer Briggs listened. Kevin eventually felt enough hope to climb back over the railing to safety. In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with both, Kevin Berthia and Kevin Briggs, who retired from the California Highway Patrol in 2013 after 20 years of service. The two men will recount the events of that day in 2005 & their subsequent reunion in 2013. Today, these two men, who have become close friends, are mental health and suicide prevention advocates and speakers, who work tirelessly, both individually and together to help bring hope to others and save lives. Note: This episode discusses suicide prevention. If you or someone you know is in need of help, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. 1.800.273.TALK(8225) https://kevinberthiafoundation.org https://www.pivotal-points.com Photo(s): Courtesy of Kevin Berthia and Kevin Briggs Music: "With Loved Ones" Jay Man
According to the World Health Organization, more than 700,000 people die by suicide every year. As a former sergeant with the California Highway Patrol, Kevin Briggs is more than familiar with these startling statistics. He's often referred to as the Guardian of the Golden Gate Bridge as he encountered countless individuals during his years of service who went to the bridge with the intent to end their life. In this Be Wellcast episode, Pete Seljevold and Elizabeth Magee talk with Kevin about his work and the lessons he learned talking with those who were contemplating suicide. He discusses the signs to watch for and advice for how to talk with someone you think may be suicidal. In this emotional and eye-opening podcast, he'll share the realities of the individuals he was able to help and the tragedy for those he couldn't.
Kevin Briggs, a retired California Highway Patrol sergeant, spent a decade patrolling the Golden Gate Bridge. A trained negotiator, Briggs handled 4-6 crisis calls a month on the bridge. These challenging but rewarding efforts earned him the nickname “Guardian of the Golden Gate Bridge.” On one fateful day in 2005, Kevin met with one of the most challenging, yet rewarding encounters of his service career with a young man of twenty-two who had come to that destination to end his life. Kevin Berthia was that young man and the 90-minute, over-the-rail exchange between these two men not only saved his life but was the start of a life-long friendship. Their hopeful, life-affirming story offers insight into how we can gain an understanding for those in the throes of personal anguish and how to extend compassion to those who may be struggling. Kevin Briggs has shared what he's learned in his memoir, Guardian of the Golden Gate. He currently speaks with law enforcement organizations, schools, and businesses to share inspire compassion and understanding about mental health and suicide issues.
No Shame On U (NSOU)Featuring: Miriam Ament, Founder & Executive DirectorThe most impactful organizations often come from one person who has lived through a traumatic experience and recognizes that they could be a catalyst for the solution. This conversation with Miriam Ament, the founder and executive director of NSOU is a great example of the power of one individual. Miriam realized that mental health conditions, which are often perceived at a “big negative”, shouldn't be a secret. This awareness led Miriam to focus on utilizing her life experiences in order to normalize mental health conversations. No Shame On U is dedicated to eliminating the stigma associated with mental health conditions and raising awareness in the Jewish community and beyond. Knowing that her story helps many others, Miriam shares vulnerably. On this podcast, she tells the story of how she started No Shame On U and gives examples of the impact it is making. I was personally impressed to hear that NSOU offered 240 programs over the pandemic. They continue to increase their impact. She also provides resources and tips for those who are struggling with mental illness. Two tools, of many possible ones, that Miriam mentions on this podcast are gratitude and exercise. No Shame on U held their first official event in November, 2015. They hosted speaker/author Kevin Briggs. Kevin Briggs is known as the Guardian of the Golden Gate. Kevin is a California Highway Patrol officer noted for his work in suicide intervention, having dissuaded more than two hundred people from jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco Bay. In 2013, Briggs retired from the California Highway Patrol to focus his efforts on suicide prevention. He is the author of “Guardian of the Golden Gate: Protecting the Line Between Hope and Despair.” His book can be found here on Amazon. He also has a Ted Talk from 2014 found here. Most importantly, to those with mental illness Miriam's and the message of No Shame On U is that they are not alone. I am grateful to share Miriam's story and the work of NSOU. If you or someone you know is in crisis please utilize the resources listed below. Research on Mental Health Conditions (from No Shame On U's Website)More than one in four Americans ages 18 or older lives with a diagnosable mental health issue - 26.2%. This means that on average, every family is touched by mental illness. Yet two thirds of those diagnosed do not get treated. Research shows that stigma is one of the key barriers to people seeking mental health treatment. Founded in November, 2014, No Shame On U is dedicated to breaking the stigma associated with mental health so the people who need the help will seek it, family members and friends will know how to provide proper support, and to save lives. We achieve our mission through our community outreach programs, classes and workshops, our online presence of over 120,000 social media followers, our weekly blog, our podcast, distribution of our fact sheets, crisis information magnets and videos, and educational presentations. For No Shame On U's mission & more about their work, visit https://www.noshameonu.org/.Mental Health ResourcesIf you are in crisis, or know someone who is, you are not alone: please call 24/7 hotline: 1-800-273-8355 (TALK) OR text 741741 for a 24/7 crisis text line a live, OR go to www.imalive.org for 24/7 online crisis chat.Support the show (https://www.bridges613.org/donate)
When does a hero, who saved over 200 lives, say, "right now, I need some help too?" Kevin Briggs has dedicated his life to suicide intervention. He spent years helping those in need come back over the railing on the Golden Gate Bridge. His impact was so tremendous that the media dubbed him the Guardian of the Golden Gate. Briggs' understanding of trauma, having experienced many traumatic events himself, heart surgeries, a cancer diagnosis, a divorce, helped mold his approach. Even the most skilled and caring people can miss the cries for help in those they love. Kevin is no exception. He shares his own experience helping countless strangers in distress, and helping the people in his immediate family during their most dangerous times. Listen in as Dr. Shauna Springer, Ph.D. talks to Kevin Briggs about his experience on the Golden Gate Bridge, his personal traumas, and his healing journey with the Stellate Ganglion Block treatment by Stella.

One man's story of 60 years living with extraterrestrials The idea that human looking extraterrestrials walking amongst us is not new to those who have immersed themselves in the rich though still mysterious history of our relationship with non-human intelligence. More people are coming forward to report their frequent interactions with these beings, yet even more, perhaps millions are reluctant to speak out about their own contact encounters. Lifelong contactee Kevin Briggs is NOT one of those individuals. Recalling his first encounter with beings whom he refers to as Ort and Dee at the age of eight, Kevin maintains that these two beings have been with him for nearly 60 years - and at their urging, his mission has been to share his experiences with the world in hopes that more people will come to understand that they - the beings have and continue to be with us, especially through these turbulent times. In this episode, Kevin details his incredible journey alongside the ETs, what they have taught him and what they insist he now must share with the world. Key areas discussed include: ✓ Blond, beautiful human looking beings (he's NOT the only one who has witnessed these entities!) ✓ Human's abilities to telepathically pick up on thought communication between non human entities. ✓ The connection with contact and OBEs (out of body experiences). ✓ Encounters with “shadow beings.” ✓ Contact with multiple non human species including The Reptilians. ✓ Consciousness as a common denominator. ✓ Recalling past lives (and deaths) as a child. ✓ Urgency to share message from the ETs with the world. #ETcontact #consciousness https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFSJWx-e6B4 ► Get INSTANT access to the after show with Kevin Briggs on Patreon
Briggs, a retired California Highway Patrol sergeant, spent many years patrolling the Golden Gate Bridge. While on patrol, he encountered numerous individuals clinging to life by a thread – individuals who had lost hope and could see no way out of their current situation - ready to jump off the bridge to what they assumed was a sudden death and end of their pain and hopelessness. Briggs, through his compassion, gentle voice, eye contact, and his innate ability of “listening to understand” encouraged more than 200 individuals over his career to either not go over the bridge's rail or come back to solid ground from where they had been standing precariously out on the chord of the bridge and start a new chapter in their life. These challenging, but rewarding efforts earned him the nickname “Guardian of the Golden Gate Bridge.” After a 23-year career with the California Highway Patrol, Briggs retired to dedicate his life to promote mental health awareness across the globe through Pivotal Points, an organization he founded. Today, Briggs is mapping a movement as he speaks and trains others in suicide prevention, crisis management, and negotiations. He shares his “Listening to Understand” skills followed up with key active listening points; his personal triad for healthy living; his RELEASE model to assist in communicating with someone in crisis and his crisis safety plan for those who may be struggling. He also discusses in-depth his own personal mental health struggles. Briggs spends the majority of his time speaking/teaching at conferences, advocacy events, colleges and universities, first responder conferences, law enforcement (including FBI & Secret Service), and military bases. Part 2 of 3: In the second episode of a three part series, in continuation of episode 20, we speak to Kevin Briggs the police officer in the Golden Gate Bridge Suicide story. Unique both their names are Kevin, but Briggs was the first person to give Kevin Berthia the man about to jump off the bridge a change in listening. Briggs listened for almost 90min while Berthia shared his entire life. To now hear this story from Briggs side is amazing. Briggs shares some of the amazing powers of listening, but more importantly understanding a person's perspective. Many see something occur and judge on the present, but they dont take into consideration of their entire life. How someone's entire life leads up to specific events. By us understanding, or trying to understand someone without putting our own narrative in the way, is what truly listening means. As Briggs says "Why do we have to get a stage 4 cancer of the bridge for someone to finally listen" Make it about them. Not us. It isn't a competition to listen. Don't make it into one. In this episode Briggs continues with amazing suggestions in how to listen, how to understand perspective. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/ChooseYourAttitudePodcast)

Kevin Briggs has had a life of service: First in the Army, then as a correctional officer, and finally in the Highway patrol in CA, which included patrolling the Golden Gate Bridge, a hotspot for suicide. His job was precisely to talk to people who were threatening to jump off the bridge. He has a TED Talk called “The bridge between suicide and life,” which has been watched for over 3.5 million people. Today he is a mental health and suicide prevention speaker and trainer. For more than a decade, he would go to the bridge and talk to those at risk, something he had never been trained to do. Kevin answered hundreds of emergency calls. In this interview, he shares what he learned about suicidal people, powerful stories of those he saved, what they had in common, ways to approach this population, what to avoid, and how his view on mental health has evolved since then. He also talks about his personal history of suicide: his grandfather took his life, something the family has never discussed. After years of avoiding his own mental illness, Kevin reached his limit and started treatment for depression. In 2019, there were 28 confirmed suicides on the bridge and 167 interventions. Since its inauguration in 1937, over 1,700 have died by jumping off the Golden Gate. Kevin Briggs spent 18 years stopping 200+ Golden Gate Bridge suicides. Kevin has story after story, tactic after tactic, lesson after lesson. In this episode we cover A LOT. Kevin shares what he learnt in his years both saving and sometimes losing lives on the bridge. What is the first thing Kevin would say? It is probably not what you expect. What about the things you should avoid saying, well, Kevin has his four comments that he always avoids. Even though Kevin became educated and trained on deescalation it wasn’t those skills that allowed him to help guide over 200 people back onto the safe side of the bridge. It was listening, it was understanding, it was patience and authenticity. It was being honest and true, staying away from cliches and talking human to human allowing the individual to clear the darkest thoughts possible and think with some instance of clarity and rationale. Kevin doesn’t consider himself a hero. I will let you hear his story and decide for yourself. Sergeant Kevin Briggs is a retired California Highway Patrol officer who spent many years patrolling the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. While on patrol, he encountered numerous individuals clinging to life by a thread – individuals who had lost hope and could see no way out of their current situation - ready to jump off the bridge to what they assumed was a sudden death and ending of their pain and hopelessness. His TED talk entitled, "The bridge between life and death", has had more than two and a half million views. He is the author of "Guardian of the Gate".
Today’s email is NOT about bodybuilding. It’s not about diet, mindset or goals… and yet, I would argue, this message is more important than any of those things. It’s about suicide. Here’s the story: You know me by now, and you know that my brain (hopefully like yours) is a sponge for wisdom! Recently, I was watching some TED talks and I came across one given by a decorated police officer of nearly three decades… During his career, Kevin Briggs worked in the area surrounding the Golden Gate Bridge in California. Sadly, that spot is one of the most common places people who take their own lives, jump from. (he said people actually FLY INTO California to die here.) I’m including the link to the full talk below, but one thing REALLY struck me, which I want to share with you now: Now, we all know someone who’s struggled with depression, or worse. Some of us have even known someone to have commit suicide. And what’s always struck me is that those who knew the person often didn’t see it coming. But there are signs, and there is a single question one can ask that, according to Officer Briggs, just might save their life. Here it is: “A few people suffering under comparable circumstances have taken their own lives. Is this something you’ve considered?” That single question, asked without judgement, without condemnation, just might turn things around for your friend, family member or co-worker… or stranger! So, today’s message is somber, but consider this: Life on this planet is precious, and we at Crazy Muscle all believe that sending this email is worth it… Sharing this might just save someone’s life. Mental illness afflicts so many around us, but few are aware of what’s happening, while many others are embarrassed or ashamed to reveal what’s going on in their minds. --->Let’s be the positive force for good today. Let’s pay attention to others, and let’s pay things forward, in gratitude for all we have, as we do our best to make the lives around us even better than before! --->You’d be surprised how much power an intentional smile, an unexpected “hello” or a random high-five can have on a stranger who just might have needed that smile, “hello” or high-five today. I trust this message finds you well--and if not, let someone know! You’re always welcome to hit reply and talk to us. We’re here for you.
Sergeant Kevin Briggs is known by many as the “Guardian of the Golden Gate Bridge.” An army veteran with no formal suicide prevention training, Kevin Briggs dissuaded more than 200 people from jumping off the bridge over his 23 years with the California Highway Patrol. With a gentle voice and compassionate lens on the world, Kevin shares his experiences working with people who are in tremendous pain and how his innate ability of “listening to understand” has been his greatest tool in encouraging people to come back over the rail onto solid ground. Retired, Briggs is now dedicating his life to promoting mental health awareness and suicide prevention across the globe.Benefitting the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Since it was erected in 1937, more than 1700 people are estimated to have jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge, and just 25 are known to have survived, according to Robert Olson of The Centre for Suicide Prevention in Calgary, Canada. But one man has talked over 200 people from making that leap into the abyss. I am thrilled to be joined by Kevin Briggs; former CHP Trooper, Veteran and now author and speaker. Kevin knows loss and trauma and uses his skills of empathy, understanding, and listening to help the hopeless take a step off the ledge and back to humanity. The Golden Gate Bridge in California is perhaps the most beautiful and iconic bridge in the United States, but it carries a dark side - many people have chosen to end their life on that bridge...and when a person is standing on the edge, if possible - someone tries to talk them down. That's exactly what Sgt. Kevin Briggs did on more than 200 occasions. What's that like? What do you say? How do you bring someone back who is in that dark place - contemplating suicide? It's all this week on a new Riggs off the Radio podcast, "Mental Health Monday".

At least once a week for almost 20 years, Sgt. Kevin Briggs would stand just a few feet away from a severely depressed person who had climbed over the rail in the middle of the Golden Gate bridge and was a step away from falling to their death. While they both stood there with noisy traffic and cold, strong wind creating insane vibrations, Kevin had to find a way to do whatever he could to break through and get people to decide to climb back. In this conversation, Kevin shares the enormous challenges he’s faced whole life -- his own family’s history with suicide, a mom dying from cancer at 49, learning about his own cancer at 21 and then battling a severe depression of his own along with multiple heart operations all while dealing with people at their darkest hour. We all have moments of despair so I hope that, in this brief conversation with the man who’s become known as the “Guardian of the Golden Gate,” you can borrow from the powerful technique and messages that he used too help hundreds of people save themselves.

Kevin Briggs is the “Guardian of the Golden Gate.” The former California highway patrol officer has prevented more than two hundred people from dying by suicide on the Golden Gate Bridge. His tactic is simple but effective. He'll ask the person in distress about their plans for the following day, then invites the person back to the bridge if their plan doesn't work out. In a day when the threat of nuclear weapons continues to make headlines, how can we be more like Kevin Briggs? How can we bring hope to bear on fearful situations?About Denison Forum and The Daily ArticleToday's Daily Article was written by Dr. Jim Denison and narrated by Chris Elkins.
