Learn how Fran Lawler went from JMO to C-Suite. This former officer is an incredibly successful leader. She is a 1995 West Point Graduate, served six successful years in the Army as a Medical Service Corps Officer, and transitioned to a business career in 2001 through Cameron-Brooks. She earned her MBA at Harvard and has held high-level human resources roles, including several Chief Human Resources Officer positions. She recently founded her own leadership consulting and coaching company, Harvest Cove Talent Partners. Fran is also the first officer I recruited to participate in the Cameron-Brooks program. I met her in Leesville, LA, just outside Fort Polk, LA (now Fort Johnson) in May 2000. She agreed to be a podcast guest to share her experience and leadership lessons. She shares her incredible story, filled with lessons on resilience, adaptability, and the pursuit of personal growth. Fran's insights shed light on what it takes to lead with authenticity and impact. Identify Personal Purpose A pivotal moment in Fran's career was crafting her personal purpose statement. This exercise helped her align her career aspirations with her deeper values, transforming her approach to leadership and teamwork. As Fran shares, finding purpose was a professional milestone and a personal breakthrough that shaped her trajectory. The Power of Coaching and Leadership Development Fran's passion for coaching stems from her own transformative experiences. She highlights the importance of asking probing questions, fostering self-reflection, and empowering clients to discover their own solutions. As Fran emphasizes, the role of a coach is to guide, not to dictate, creating a safe space for others to explore and grow. In our discussion, Fran reflects on how coaching has enhanced her professional relationships and deepened her connection with friends and family. This underscores the broader impact of coaching—its ability to enrich lives beyond the workplace. Harvest Cove Talent Partners: A Vision for Growth and Community Fran recently took a bold step by launching her firm, Harvest Cove Talent Partners. Inspired by her commitment to growth and human connection, Harvest Cove aims to support leaders and teams in achieving their full potential. The firm's name reflects Fran's mission to create a “harvest” of blessings and opportunities, cultivating a space where vulnerability and authenticity thrive. Leadership Rooted in Purpose Fran Lawler's journey from JMO to C-suite is a testament to the power of adaptability, purpose, and continuous growth. Her story reminds us that true leadership goes beyond achieving goals—it's about fostering connection, empowering others, and staying grounded in one's values. Through her coaching work and the creation of Harvest Cove, Fran exemplifies how leaders can inspire transformation while staying true to their purpose. Fran's story is an inspiration for anyone navigating transitions or seeking greater meaning in their work. I split the interview into two parts:  This first part talks a lot about leadership and training and why we need to allow our subordinates to fail if we really want the best for them.  Part two includes some lessons from Med School and the War in Afghanistan that drive home the point about humility and making career decisions.Music is by PineApple Music, by Alexander Nakarada, and by Chris HaugenHey Chaplain Podcast Episode 086Tags:Army, Accountability, Discipline, Failure, Learning, Leadership, Police, Standards, Training, Leavenworth, Kansas, LouisianaSupport the Show. Thanks for Listening! 6ers, how do you earn the right to win? I know for certain that talent alone does not guarantee success. I also know for certain that winning is largely based on one's effort. A trained athlete who wants to increase his chance of winning will have thorough preparation and that means putting in countless hours of hard work and planning a strategy for every possibility. This week, Tony Nash is joined by Will Huff, veteran and Director of Partnership at https://soldierstosidelines.org/ (Soldiers to Sidelines) and a Board Member at https://www.baltimorestation.org/ (The Baltimore Station). Will is passionate about https://www.listennotes.com/it/podcasts/the-veterancrowd/140-will-huff-army-veteran-ZSRIKx6ulMW/ (sports) and believes https://www.listennotes.com/it/podcasts/the-veterancrowd/140-will-huff-army-veteran-ZSRIKx6ulMW/ (athleticism) is a valid path in the military to produce good combat leaders. Will Huff is a 1991 West Point Graduate and served in the Army from 1991 to 2015, retiring at the rank of Colonel. You will learn about what continuous learning looks like as a leader, how to be a good teammate, a coach, and a leader, and take care of all these distinct responsibilities all the same time, to nurture a culture of a learning organization. You'll also learn the value of mastering the basic skills until everything becomes second nature to you. As a result, you will gain a better appreciation of why you need to earn the right to win and prepare yourself for success. You will then be more willing to accept and withstand the obstacles and roadblocks ahead knowing that the real challenge is keeping your commitment to the process itself. ----- Resources Mentioned: https://www.amazon.com/Earn-Right-Win-Superior-Preparation/dp/1591847281 (Earn The Right To Win) by Tom Coughlin ----- 01:06 - Being a good teammate 02:27 - The value of proximity and preparation during any kind of transition journey 05:41 - Checking your ego and exercising humility as you move up the ladder and hone your craft 07:46 - Balancing being a teammate, a coach, and a leader 13:12 - What continuous learning looks like when you're already a leader 16:26 - Avoiding complacency and fighting the monotony of mastering a skill 20:57 - A well-planned execution that failed can be a teachable moment about what you can still improve 24:25 - Communicating better and listening more as personal milestones ----- Here is how to connect with Will Huff: https://www.linkedin.com/in/will-huff-3a699593/recent-activity/shares/ (LinkedIn) ----- Connect with Got Your Six podcast: https://www.thetonynash.com/podcast (Website) https://www.instagram.com/gotyour6pod/ (Instagram) https://discord.gg/KPPzmevp (Discord) https://www.linkedin.com/company/gotyour6pod/ (LinkedIn) https://twitter.com/gotyour6pod (Twitter) https://www.tiktok.com/@gotyour6pod? Why MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) Is No Longer Reassuring

Central to America's strategy in the Cold War was the principle of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD). The idea was to make nuclear warfare a lose-lose proposition — a game you just can't win. Whichever side was attacked would retain the capability to counterattack. Both sides would end up devastated, if not annihilated. But MAD works only if both sides are equally averse to mass death and destruction. When it comes to Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, Ali Khamenei, and Kim Jong-un, can we be confident of that? If not, what replaces MAD? Perhaps robust deterrence and comprehensive missile defense systems — neither of which can be achieved easily, cheaply, or quickly. And we've really not yet begun to pursue such goals. To unpack these issues, Foreign Podicy host Cliff May is joined by Rob Soofer. Formerly the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear and Missile Defense Policy, Rob is now a Senior Associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University's Center for Strategic Studies. Caleb Campbell is a kid from Texas who did the impossible: he was the first player in West Point history to be recruited into the NFL. His dreams came true, all the hard work paid off, everyone was so proud. He had the life millions of young athletes fantasize about. But there was one problem: he hated himself. And he knew, secretly, that in order to survive, he needed to quit football. On our debut episode of Quitted, Caleb takes us to church as he shares his story of leaving behind who he thought he was and his path to finding his way home, casually dropping an entire book's worth of wisdom along the way. If you've ever assumed you'd have nothing in common with a pro football player, this episode will prove you so wrong. About Caleb Campbell: Caleb is a West Point Graduate, former Army Officer and an ex-NFL linebacker who now travels the country as a full time keynote speaker and workshop facilitator.
