As our annual celebration of 4/20 rapidly approaches, please roll up and get ready for the incredible true story of how a small Northern California weed crew created an analog meme that grew into an international high holiday of cannabis liberation. But first, we check in with acclaimed journalist David Downs and Lance Lombard from Grove Bags about "weed week" in San Francisco, particularly the "Get to the Bag" art show, which chronicles the fascinating history and subversive artistry of the mylar bags that became industry-standard cannabis packaging for licensed brands and illicit operators alike starting about fifteen years ago. And speaking of 4/20, if you're in Portland on 4/19 please grab tickets to my live show The History of Weed, happening at Kickstand Comedy theater. This is the State of California: Doug Sovern and Patti Reising are away today. The Justice Department has proposed reclassifying marijuana as a Schedule 3 drug, which would ease federal restrictions on cannabis if approved. This move, deemed "monumental" by President Biden, follows his moves to pardon those convicted of simple marijuana possession, and highlights his administration's focus on marijuana policy reform. Although Marijuana is legal in California, there are still federal laws that prevent its use in certain instances in the state. And to break it down, KCBS Radio's Bret Burkhart was joined by David Downs, the Senior Editor at Leafly, an online marijuana resource.
In this special episode, Sara interviews David Downs, Ngaio Bealum and other guests of SF Weed Week's 420 celebration. [Ep104]

Vice President Kamala Harris' push to rally voters in San José around support for reproductive rights ran headlong into protests on Monday, demanding an immediate cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas War in Gaza. Scott talks about that with Guy Marzorati, who was there before and during Harris' appearance. Plus, President Joe Biden is facing major problems with younger voters. They're upset his climate change policies haven't gone further, and they're disaffected by his unwavering support for Israel in its war with Hamas. Some think a push for decriminalizing marijuana use could help Biden win back voters under 30. Scott talks to David Downs, senior editor and reporter with Leafly.com, an online publication that covers marijuana policy.

Each week BusinessDesk and the NZ Herald's Cooking the Books podcast tackles a different money problem. Today, it's all about expanding your customer base by going international. Hosted by Frances Cook. When you're on the hunt for customers, you usually would like as many as possible. One way to increase those numbers is to increase the size of your hunting ground, by taking your business international. Of course, that is better suited to some businesses than others, and you might need to change tactics in order for it to work. For the latest podcast, I talked to David Downs, CEO of the New Zealand Story. If you have a question about this podcast, or a question you'd like answered in the next one, come and talk to me about it. I'm on Facebook here, Instagram here, and Twitter here. David Downs is eternally optimistic. He currently heads up New Zealand Story, a government agency introduced to market a feelgood Kiwi story to the world. David was also told a few years ago that he had one year to live. He refused to give in, and after being thrown a hail mary pass by a random American stranger, he beat cancer. David joined me in studio for a brilliant conversation about what makes New Zealand, and Kiwi's, so bloody great, and why he wants the world to know about it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
