A health reseacher said getting rid of the harmful marketing of junk food and alcohol and reducing nicotine is imperative for a healthier future in Aotearoa. The Cancer Society has released it 2026 Election manifesto, essentially a five point policy wish listto improve cancer outcomes. It wants fully funded cervical screening, and national screening programmes for skin and lung cancer and the bowel cancer screening age lowered to 50. The cancer society is also pushing for stricter rules for nicotine, unhealthy foods and alcohol. Dr Victoria Egli, is an associate professor of health equity and innovation at Waikato Uni. She spoke to Lisa Owen.
An extra half hour of The Panel with Wallace Chapman, where to begin, he's joined by Nights host Emile Donovan. Then: This morning, the Cancer Society released its election manifesto. Among its top asks are fully funding cervical screening, and lowering the bowel screening age. But what about treatment options? Car T-cell therapy is a potential underdog for New Zealand. Business consultant, cancer survivor and Malaghan Institute representative David Downs explains.
You know it's an election year, don't you? You know it's an election year when Winston's fermenting merry mischief, when the leader of the opposition is happy to put himself up for an hour of questions on talkback, and when lobby groups are releasing their election wish lists. The Cancer Society has released its election manifesto and is calling on the next Government, however it looks, to spend dollars to save them. For example, if you invest $5.5 million a year to deliver a national skin cancer prevention and early detection programme, more than 90% of cases will be prevented – nearly all cases are treatable when detected early. Every dollar invested, according to the Cancer Society, returns $11.90 in savings. And when you think of friends and family who have been through cancer treatment, you can understand how that would stack up. If you don't have to go through the torturous and expensive and generally lifesaving treatments, you are saving so much. So much of your own energy, so much time, so much money as a result of not getting cancer in the first place or early detection. As Cancer Society Chief Executive Nicola Coom told Mike Hosking this morning, given that cancer's New Zealand's biggest killer, it makes sense to invest in early detection and treatments. “One in three of us in New Zealand will receive a cancer diagnosis in our lifetime, but what's startling is one in three can also be prevented. So 81 people today around New Zealand are going to hear that they've got cancer. What this manifesto is about is we want those people to either A, not have that news in the first place, or B, be told it's okay, we've detected it early, your prognosis is good.” So the Cancer Society also wants to see cervical screening fully funded at a cost of $21 million per year and deliver on the 90% HPV immunisation target by 2030. You get that immunisation rate up and that eliminates cervical cancer. Invest the $5.5 million a year to deliver the skin cancer prevention and early detection programme, fund a lung cancer screening programme and begin rolling it out over the next three years, lower the bowel screening starting age to 50 and protect children and families from the commercial drivers of cancer. It all makes sense. If you can spend a dollar to save 11, why would you not? And you can say well the money's not there, but it is. It is there within the health budget. Imagine. Imagine if you didn't have to go through that whole gruelling process of trying to treat a cancer which could have been detected early, which could have been prevented in the first place when you look at the HPV immunisation. Cancer does not have to be a death sentence anymore. Breast cancer used to be, once you got the news about that, it was basically “set your affairs in order”. But as a result of new treatments, as a result of detection programmes, you no longer see it as a death sentence. 86% of people who are diagnosed with breast cancer survive 10 years or longer now. With skin cancers, if they're detected early, bowel cancer if you have the screening programme and can pick up the polyps that can turn into something life threatening, there is no reason for us to go through the agony of seeing somebody sicken and die. There will still be some that are just the anomalies of cancer cells being in your body and it's just your DNA and your bad luck and hopefully next life round you have a better run of it. But for many people it's detectable and if you have the early screening, you find it, the treatments are less severe, less harsh, less gruelling, less expensive. No brainer. I'd absolutely back the Cancer Society's election manifesto on that and I'll ask Chris Hipkins about that, but I'd love to hear from those of you who know exactly what this is all about, who've been there, who've done that, who've either had early detection or because of gaps in the system did not have the early detection and had a poorer outcome, tell me your story. The Cancer Society's asking political parties to stop tinkering around the edges and unite to more strongly fight the disease. It's joined with the Government to each commit another $1 million towards the Sun Smart skin cancer prevention programme. But the Society is also calling for more cervical and lung cancer screening, and to bring down the bowel cancer screening age. Chief Executive Nicola Coom told Mike Hosking skin cancer prevention has been underinvested in for decades, despite being the country's biggest killer. She says there's no doubt we've made a bit of progress in the last few years, but it's not enough to respond to the large number of cancer diagnoses New Zealand is currently facing. More cancer patients will get treatment closer to home with the expansion of infusion centres, according to the government. But the plan could take two and a half years to roll out. The governments opening 14 new infusion centres around the country, where patients can get chemo and other targeted therapies that are given intravenously or through drips into the vein. One west Auckland clinic opens later this week. It's also expanding 14 existing infusion centres. Nicola Coom, chief executive of the Cancer Society spoke to Lisa Owen.
The Cancer Society says widening access to cancer infusion treatment is a win for rural communities. The Health Minister announced $210 million from Budget 2024 will go into 14 new sites and expanding 14 existing ones. Small towns including Dargaville and Te Kuiti will get new facilities by 2028. Cancer Society Chief Executive Nicola Coom told Ryan Bridge that with the price of fuel at the moment, anything that reduces travel time is a win. She says it puts treatment closer to rural communities, which then frees up critical capacity in major tertiary hospitals. “A win for families, a win for our communities, and definitely a win for the system overall.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The government launched a two-year pilot of a genomic testing programme, allowing samples to be analysed locally. Health Minister Simeon Brown says it will cut wait times and uncertainty for cancer patients. Cancer Society chief executive Nicola Coom spoke to Corin Dann.
Cancer exacts a high price at the best of times but it's gettting more costly for hundreds of patients due to war in the Middle East. Many people with cancer are forced to drive hundreds of kilometres to main centres for treatment and specialist appointments. The conflict in the Middle East has seen petrol prices jump, costing an extra $23 to fill an average petrol tank. Under the National Travel Assistance scheme patients needing to travel frequently to see specialists can apply for a mileage reinbursement. But the payment is only 34 cents a kilometre and has strict criteria. The Cancer Society's southern head of cancer services Craig Watson spoke to Lisa Owen.
Just because someone beats their estimated prognosis. Doesn't mean they are not suffering. Actually, it's quite the contrary! They continue to live because they are fighting HARDER than ever before! They have something to prove. Or, in my case... someones. You pick and choose your battles in life. This, I learned the hard way. CHOOSE WISELY!.
Concerns over skin cancer with many Kiwis still getting sunburnt. A new Cancer Society and Otago University survey, has found 64% of respondents were sunburnt at least once last summer, including 26% severely. Dr Bryan Betty joined Jack Tame to break down the data and discuss some of the best ways to push skin protection to the youth. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This episode is a little different.I recorded it while away at the beach with my family, fitting it in between swims, time with the kids, and the usual holiday chaos. Instead of the usual interview, this is just me taking a moment to reflect on the past year of Purposely Podcast and some of the themes that kept coming up.2025 was a big year for the podcast. We recorded 49 episodes and are closing in on 300 in total since Purposely began in 2020. This episode is a pause rather than a performance. A chance to share what stood out, what I have learned, and what feels worth carrying forward. One of the questions I ask in every interview is about mission and purpose. It has become increasingly clear to me that organisations with real clarity on why they exist tend to do better. They raise funds more effectively, motivate their teams more strongly, and stay focused on the impact they are trying to have. That clarity acts as a north star, especially when things get tough.I also share some thoughts on what it has meant to hear from listeners and see the podcast grow. The feedback, messages, and ongoing engagement really matter to me and help shape where the podcast goes next.A strong theme this year was the value of lived experience in leadership. Two conversations that stayed with me were with Nicola Coombe, CEO of the Cancer Society of New Zealand, and Shaun Robinson, CEO of the Mental Health Foundation. Both spoke openly about how their own experiences shape the way they lead and the empathy they bring to their roles.Another recurring topic was shared leadership and the rise of co-CEO models. Conversations with Alison Goodman from Noah's Ark Children's Hospice and Dean Hegarty from the Responsible Investment Association Australasia showed how well these arrangements can work when there is trust, complementary skill sets, and very little ego.I also reflect on the growing interest in venture philanthropy. In a difficult funding environment, conversations with Mary Rose Gunn from The Four and Izzy Horrocks from the Aotearoa Life Course Fund highlighted new ways of supporting early-stage organisations and social entrepreneurs, and why understanding how funders think is becoming increasingly important. This year I also hosted a number of in-person events, bringing together people from the investment world and the for-purpose sector. One thing I have become more convinced of is that as technology and AI make information easier to access, human connection becomes more valuable, not less. Meeting in person, learning together, and building relationships still matter.Towards the end of the episode I share a personal story about discipline and consistency. It is a reminder that change does not usually come from big gestures, but from small actions repeated over time.Thank you for listening and for supporting Purposely Podcast through 2025. I am really looking forward to what is coming in 2026, with more conversations, live events, and some new formats as the podcast continues to evolve. Some reflections from the yearThemes that stood out in 2025Connection still mattersA personal reflectionLooking ahead

Summer is well and truly here, and with warmer days comes more time spent outdoors, and the need for sunscreen. Head of advocacy and public affairs at the Cancer Society, Rachael Neumann spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
New Zealand has the chance to virtually eliminate cervical cancer but the uptake of a vaccination that prevents it remains incredibly low. The latest State of Cancer report released today says half of all cancers are preventable. The Human Papilloma viruses or HPVs are the main causes of several cancers including cervical, mouth and throat cancer. But the HPV vaccine can prevent the virus. Head of Advocacy and Public Affairs at the Cancer Society, Rachael Neumann spoke to Lisa Owen.
There are areas for improvement in how we prevent cancer, with the number of new cases expected to jump in the next two decades. The Cancer Control Agency's latest State of Cancer report shows cancer's on the rise. Diagnoses are expected to rise from 30 thousand this year to more than 45 thousand in 2044. Cancer Society National Chief Executive Nicola Coom told Andrew Dickens people with cancer are living longer, but we could have less cancer to begin with if we introduced more screening. She says other OECD countries we compare ourselves to are preventing more cancer because they do far more in the cancer prevention space than we do. When it comes to cancer more patients are starting treatment within the government's 31 day target time according to new figures. Nationally 86.3 per cent of patients started treatment within that time frame up from 83.5 percent last year. The government's gunning for 90 percent by 2030. A breakdown of districts though shows wait times have acutally got worse in eight areas in the past three months.
