This was an extraordinary Sunday crossword by David Kwong, his 24th for the NYTimes. David is a magician, fitting since there is so much magic in today's grid ... and art! In fact there is a palette of artists (and if palette's not the unit in which artists are measured it ought to be) as well, all part of a very, very clever theme. Deets inside!A reminder that our next Triplet Tuesday Contest is coming up this Tuesday, and you might be our next winner. With his expertise in enigmas and illusions, David Kwong delights and challenges audiences around the world with his intellectual brand of magic. He joins to discuss his one-man show, The Enigmatist, and his career as a magician, crossword puzzle constructor, and writer.

“Storytelling is really what sells the magic trick.” When David Kwong was a young child, a magician performing at a pumpkin patch fooled his father with a classic magic trick. From that moment, he knew he wanted to be a magician. He has since performed worldwide as an acclaimed magician and even consulted on many movies and TV shows like Now You See Me and After Party. Fast forward to today, David Kwong has written a book for every kid who ever wanted to fool their parents. In this episode of REPOD, David Kwong talks to us about life not only as a magician, but also as a “cruciverbalist” (crossword puzzle constructor). In fact, his signature trick involves him performing intense mental gymnastics on stage while creating a seemingly impossible crossword puzzle together with the audience. “I realized that taking these things that I love, magic and puzzles and word games, and fusing them together could cross pollinate and synthesize into something new.” His new book, How to Fool Your Parents, not only teaches kids how to perform the magic, but it also teaches showmanship. He tells us that “storytelling is really what sells the magic trick,” and in the book, he helps kids make the trick their own. I love escape rooms that make me feel smart, and David Kwong's magic is designed to do exactly that. The only reason that magic tricks actually work, according to the world famous magician and puzzle-maker David Kwong, is that “people want to believe.” The same theory applies to politics, fake news, and the entire tricks that Trump used to win the White House. Kwong joins us this week to share fascinating stories about magicians playing an integral role in war efforts, clandestine government operations, and yes, politics. My guest today is David Kwong. He’s a magician, New York Times crossword creator, and now author of the book "Spellbound: Seven Principles of Illusion to Captivate Audiences and Unlock the Secrets of Success. Today on the show, David and I discuss how several key principles from magic can be applied beyond the stage and make you more successful in business and life. We’ll learn what it means to “load up” in magic and how Richard Branson used that principle to start Virgin Airlines, and why storytelling is key for executing both a successful magic trick and a successful business. We also discuss how magicians plan for tricks gone awry and the lessons non-magicians can take from that preparation. We even get into the mutual admiration Theodore Roosevelt and Houdini had for each other and how Houdini personified Roosevelt's ideal of living "the strenuous life."

“The energy you give off is a very real thing. When you want something too much, you might give off this anxious energy that scares people away because you're trying too hard to impress somebody.” - David Kwong David Kwong. He is an illusionist and puzzle expert who believes that human beings are driven by the urge to solve problems and “create order out of chaos”. He is also the founder of the Misdirectors Guild, an elite group of magicians that specialise in magic for film and television. He's spoken at TED and As the head magic consultant, David created illusions for the bank-heist film Now You See Me, teaching magic to Jesse Eisenberg, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Mark Ruffalo and Woody Harrelson. He has also designed magic and puzzles for Ant-Man, The Imitation Game, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, to name a few. When we push ourselves too hard and come from a space of “needing” and “wanting” we send out the message that we cannot have what we desire. That's when we find ourselves facing roadblocks, burning out, flailing and repelling opportunities and people. Our conversation with David reminds us that it's about “finding something that you truly love and doing it in an authentic way.” He stresses that “authenticity is the real key”. Whatever it is that inspires you and has your creative juices flowing, follow that. Explore it with tenacity and work your magic. And keep doing working at it even when you find yourself staring obstacles in the face. There's always a way to figure out the puzzle. “Sometimes things fall apart, and you have to pick yourself up and try again. The fancy term is you iterate. You pivot left and right, back and forth until you find the next way to accomplish things.” An honest discussion about creativity, wonder and pursuing what you're here to accomplish.
