April 13, 2025Today's Reading: Luke 22:1-23:56 or Luke 23:1-56 or John 12:20-43Daily Lectionary: Exodus 8:1-32; Psalm 118; Hebrews 1:1-14“So Jesus said to them, ‘The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.'” (John 12:35-36)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Spelunking is a unique activity. Inside a cave, where the light of the world cannot reach, pure darkness exists. No light. The only light present is the temporary light that humans bring into the darkness by means of a headlamp, a light dependent upon batteries, or some other form of stored energy. If you lose your light while spelunking, you will get lost.In our lives today, it may seem like we are lost. We feel that we are aimlessly wandering through each day, unsure of what tomorrow will bring. We struggle in family relationships, friendships seem superficial, our bodies do not look the way we want them to, and our lives seem really dark. The Gospel of John teaches us about a tension between light and darkness. The darkness that has overcome the world is sin. God's creation no longer walks in the light as Adam and Eve did at the beginning of creation. Now, man walks in darkness. We try hard to create our own light in this world of darkness, but in the end, it is only temporary and leaves us lost in this world of sin.Christ came into this world of darkness as the light of the world. His light is not temporary but eternal. It shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not (and cannot) overcome it. In your Baptism, you are connected to Christ. You are connected to the light of the world. Sin, satan, and the world want you to believe that the darkness is permanent in your life, but Christ gives to us the defeat of darkness. His ride into Jerusalem was the beginning of the end for darkness. Today, you can boldly and confidently say, “I am baptized into Christ!” Darkness tries to prevail, but Christ has already overcome it. In your Baptism, you walk in the light of Christ. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Almighty and everlasting God, You sent Your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, to take upon Himself our flesh and to suffer death upon the cross. Mercifully grant that we may follow the example of His great humility and patience and be made partakers of His resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (Collect for Palm Sunday)-Rev. On this episode we watch 2005's The Descent. A year after tragedy strikes, a group of friends discover something far worse in the deep caverns of the Appalachian Mountains. This spelunking splatter fest is a contender for many titles, including best horror movie of the 2000s, most objectionable thing to watch for anybody with even the slightest claustrophobia, and having maybe one of the worst best friends in all of horror movie history. Listen up as we also thoroughly debate the appropriate moniker of Vampire Bats vs. Crawlers in this modern horror classic.Other topics include reflecting on the recent loss of Val Kilmer, visiting with Jim Jarmusch, pivotal David Lynch L.A. landmarks, Days of the Dead Chicago, found footage influence in the early 2000s, and the 90s forgotten gem Rumpelstiltskin on 4K.Songs of the WeekFuck and Run by Liz PhairBy the Light of the Silvery Moon by Little RichardRemainders Jukebox PlaylistWebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeTwitter

Greg is telling us about a true mystery in the Caucasus Mountains of a 350ft shaft at the top of Khara Hora mountain that appears to be a supernatural anomaly. Constructed by polished megalithic stones weighing over 200 tons no one knows it's true purpose or who made it.... but one thing appears obvious - it was not naturally formed so what exactly is the Khara Hora Shaft See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Underground caves are a complex, underground ecosystem that must be treated with care and responsibility. Pat Minnick is a member of the Franklin County Grotto which is a local chapter of the National Speleological Society. Minnick shared some of the dangers of the popular recreational activity. “The most common type of injury. With the carving action, it is a cave or fall. Someone trips falls and generally it might result in a lower leg injury, sprained ankle, broken leg, that kind of thing.” Minnick also recommends letting a trusted friend or family member know when you decide to go caving. “Now, you want to allow enough time so that if you're, you know, maybe an hour late or something, nobody's punching 911. But you need to let somebody know where you're going and have a plan of what you're going to do if the person doesn't come out. Most recreational cavers go to someplace that's known. However, a lot of people are doing project cave in cave mapping, so they're going in to maybe a known cave, but there's unknown passage beyond. So, they're in the process of mapping the cave. And mapping the cave involves compass and a tape measuring, measuring the cave, and then doing the cartography or drawing up the map. So, they're people that that excel at that and produce wonderful cave maps that show new maps and new caves.” Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Claustrophobics need not apply this week, lil onions! We're breaking down one of Carie's all-time favorite horror films, The Descent (2005). We follow the journey of a group of female spelunkers as the traverse an unknown cave system and disturb the ancient horrors within. Carie is overwhelmed by the physical display of badassitude on behalf of the all-female cast, Ross is on the Juno For Death 2005 campaign for the entire film, and the siblings discuss how the film's two different endings impact the overall narrative.
The Scriptures are the Christian's playground. They are given to us not only for teaching, correction, reproof, training in righteousness, but also to be explored and enjoyed. Is there an album more representative of this podcast's main focus? Not outside of Norway, there isn't. Montréal's DBC (Dead Brain Cells) released ‘Universe' in 1989, a tech-y cosmic opus of 37:26 that manages to cover the big bang, the evolution of life, the fall of the dinosaurs, man's eventual dominance on Earth, and humanity's possible future in the album's brief but eventful duration. Join us as we spelunk through the black holes and blocky, monolithic riffs of DBC's second and final album… Note I:All Ye Who Enter: Tangents on other Canadian metal bands will happen throughout this episode. And a Swiss one, too. And time machines…and the moon…and Phil Anselmo's Mind Over Four shirt.Note II:Although Hunter claims Garth Richardson (aka GGGarth) produced Helmet's Betty, the RR fact-checking department can find no evidence that the guy was anywhere near that album. Hunter apologizes and says, “Total brain fart. It was T-Ray [Todd Ray].” Note III:The Radical Research Patreon page is now set up and ready for your patronage. This podcast is conceived and conducted by Jeff Wagner and Hunter Ginn. Though we consume music in a variety of ways, we give particular privilege to the immersive, full-album listening experience.
