On today's show, we examine the upsurge in violence against the transgender community. Insider spent 18 months investigating the murders of 175 transgender people over the span of five years, resulting in a published series called “Deaths in the Family.” They found that that murders of trans people have doubled over the last three years, that only three of the murders they investigated were charged as hate crimes, and that only 28 cases resulted in murder convictions. We speak with the editorial consultant on Insider's recent investigative series on anti-trans violence, Diamond Stylz. Diamond is a Black trans activist and the Executive Director of Black Trans Women Inc, a national nonprofit that is led by Black trans women focused on social advocacy, positive visibility, and building strong leadership among Black trans advocates, activists, and their allies. How do attacks on trans organizing and rights impact related movements for bodily autonomy, reproductive justice, and liberation? On episode 51 of "The Activist Files," our Communications Associate Lexi Webster talks with Imara Jones, award-winning journalist, content creator and thought leader, founder of TransLash Media, and host of the TransLash podcast, and Diamond Stylz, activist, media maker, executive director of Black Trans Women Inc., and host of the Marsha's Plate podcast, about how the work of movements for trans justice can inform social justice organizing on all liberation struggles.Their discussion centers around the ways in which an emboldened post-Trump era extremist movement on the right has set into motion a plan whose long-term goal is the creation and enforcement of a white ethnostate and how such a plot relies on the eradication of minorities deemed deviant, the targeting of reproductive rights, and the elimination of any and all protections afforded to trans individuals and communities across the country. They discuss the need for a broad, intersectional approach by progressives who purport to fight for queer and trans liberation, and the continued urgency to build popular momentum for forward-thinking policies by and for Black trans people. They argue that to combat an organized and well-resourced white supremacist Christofascist, nationalist movement would require that the needs of Black trans communities are not only acknowledged, but prioritized by mainstream LGB institutions and that trans-interest groups engage in deeper dialogue and collaboration to provide guidance toward those ends. They also touch on the importance of mutual aid in this work and how our collective eagerness and ability to meet the material needs of Black trans people can act as a litmus test to assess the health of our society and movements.Resources:Organizations and public figures:House of Tulip, New OrleansThe Transgender District, founded by three black trans women in 2017 as Compton's Transgender Cultural District Tourmaline, Black trans artistQuotes and publications:Biopower, theory of Michel Foucault Necropolitics, theory of Achille MbembeRaquel Willis' speech at the 2020 Brooklyn Liberation eventToni Morrison quote Julian K. Don't mind us. We just want a short but official intro episode that we can share across streaming platforms. We are Marsha's Plate, a progressive podcast hosted by three trans people of color. We launched in October of 2017 in response to the 2016 election. We didn't like how the media was covering the trans narrative by focusing just on the bathroom bills popping up all across the country. We wanted to create a show, named after the pioneer Black trans baddie Marsha P. Johnson, that shared the more pressing disparities of the trans community but also the victories and joys of our lives. Our hosts are millennials that represent the feminine and masculine sides of the trans experience. We have been featured on Spotify, ABC, The Root, Stanford, Bitch Media, Aljazeera, World Pride NYC, and at SXSW twice. Our creator and producer Diamond Stylz is a 25-year vet trans activist. She is the executive director of Black Trans Women Inc and a board member of Transfaith. Mia Mix is a Houston socialite and sex worker. LJ aka Jonathan is a black genderqueer trans guy from Milwaukee living in Seattle.
We discuss pop-culture current events, sex, relationship, and gender every week. Diamond brings a wide range of experience and formal education and history. Mia Mix makes it hot by bringing humor and Southern belle spirit to every conversation. LJ aka Jonathan brings the masculine, genderqueer trans guy next door perspective. We know that everybody is not invited to the cookout and that this is for us by us.
People can use our show as a resource to learn passively with force your trans friend to always have to do the labor of educating you. It is so easy and non-invasive. You tune in, just listen, and learn.BOOM!!! That's easy. We introduce our audience to the news with deeper trans insights and seasoned or emerging trans community leaders throughout the country. This is important work because it archives the current trans movement, spotlights activists doing amazing work, and highlights the news that impacts trans people's lives around the globe which is a narrative ignored by mainstream news outlets.  #marshasplate #girlslikeus #boyslikeus #transgender #podcast #podsincolor #podernfamily #transisbeautiful #houston #lgbt #transmen #transwomen #blackfeminism #trans101 #trans #blacktranswomen #blacktransmen #houstonpride #indiepodcast #blacktranslivesmatter #lgbtqia #lgbtq #genderidentity #pride #blackgirlmagic #blackboyjoy #podcast

Texas HB 25 - Banning transgender student athletes -- Documentary "North by Current"We speak with local transgender activist Diamond Stylz about Texas House Bill 25, the bill banning transgender participation in student sports. We discuss her experience and how this bill will affect LGBT Texans. The Texas House passed HB 25, an anti-transgender sports ban targeting innocent school-age children. Equality Texas, the largest statewide organization solely dedicated to securing full equality for LGBTQ+ Texans, responded: “The passage of HB 25 is a hateful, targeted attack on transgender people living in Texas,” said Ricardo Martinez (he/him), Chief Executive Officer of Equality Texas. “Extremists in our Legislature have continuously leveraged cruel rhetoric and rampant misinformation to coordinate this attack on the transgender community — young children in particular — and have sent a clear message that Texas is not a safe place for them to live. GUEST: Diamond Stylz https://www.equalitytexas.org/for-immediate-release-equality-texas-statement-on-house-passage-of-hb-25/We speak Madsen Minax about the film "North by Current" playing at the Rice Cinema on Friday November 12th at 7:30pm. After the inconclusive death of his young niece, filmmaker Angelo Madsen Minax returns to his rural Michigan hometown, preparing to make a film about a broken criminal justice system. Instead, he pivots to excavate the depths of generational addiction, Christian fervor, and trans embodiment. Lyrically assembled images, decades of home movies, and ethereal narration form an idiosyncratic and poetic undertow that guide a viewer through lifetimes and relationships. Like the relentless Michigan seasons, the meaning of family shifts, as Madsen, his sister, and his parents strive tirelessly to accept each other. Poised to incite more internal searching than provide clear statements or easy answers, NORTH BY CURRENT dives head first into the challenges of creating identity, the agony of growing up, and the ever-fickle nuances of family.GUEST: Madsen Minax http://www.northbycurrent.com/

She unpacks and repackages the Book of Ruth, while she relentlessly highlights the patriarchy that fuels the narrative.  Diamond Stylz is one of the premier voices among the millennial black trans community. Currently, Diamond is the Executive Director of Black Trans Women Inc, a national non-profit that is led by Black trans women focused on social advocacy, economic equity and building strong leadership among Black trans women.  Diamond is the host and producer of Marsha's Plate, a weekly podcast that archives and centers the trans social justice movements and pro-black feminist culture.  Diamond also contributed an essay the the anthology OtherWise Christian 2: Stories of Resistance.    Liam shares the "Other Text," the poem, Gender, by Dr. Joy Ladin from her collection of poems entitled Impersonation. Dr. Ladin was a guest on Bible Bash and spoke about the story of Jonah as a metaphor for her own life.    In each episode of Bible Bash Podcast, Peterson, cisgender gay Bible scholar and co-host, Liam Michael Hooper, a trans Bible scholar, take turns presenting the text. On this episode of Black Diplomats we’re talking to three Transgender Black Women in three different countries about what liberation looks like for them. There is more transgender representation in media and politics than ever before, but transgender people still have to deal with hate and misgendering. Host Terrell J. Starr brings together a brilliant panel of activists from the US, Nigeria, and South Africa to fill us in on where the movement stands today, what it means for their fight to be connected on a global scale, and the true sound of freedom for Transgender Black Women everywhere. Our guests include Diamond Stylz in Houston, Texas, Executive Director of Black Trans Women Inc., a national non-profit that is led by Black trans women focused on social advocacy, positive visibility and building strong leadership among Black trans advocates, activists, and our allies. We also have Audrey Mbugua, a Kenyan activist who heads Transgender Education and Advocacy (TEA), an organization that defends the rights of transgender individuals in Kenya. In 2014, Mbugua won a landmark case, wherein the Kenya National Examinations Council was ordered to legally change Mbugua’s name and remove the existing gender designation on her academic certificates. Rounding out our brilliant panel is Ricki Kgositau, an openly identified transwoman from Botswana who lives in Cape Town, South Africa. She is Executive Director to an International NGO known as Accountability International, which has a global team in Belgium, Kenya, Sweden (where it was founded and registered) and South Africa (where she is based in the Cape Town office).

Hi y'all, this is our first "Transcripts Presents" episode, where we bring you the latest and greatest in trans audio. First up, a sample of Diamond Stylz's show "Marsha's Plate." Diamond was one of the guests on episode one-- she's the one who became an activist after making it big on YouTube and now runs Black Transwomen Inc. She also runs her incredible podcast along Mia Mix and Zee, fellow Houston-based digital strategists, black feminists, civil right advocates, and black trans people. This episode, Black Podcast Joy, really showcases what I love about this show-- it's honest, straightforward, and you can hear trans people disagree with each other in nuanced and loving ways. --- Original show notes: On Today’s Menu: on Marsha’s Plate we talk about how extending your self as a trans resource can put you in harms way, we talk about our favorite Black podcasts in the industry, then we talk about Black trans folks you should be watching. --- If you loved this show, please go subscribe and drop some money in the Marsha's Plate patreon at Patreon.com/MarshasPlate. This is Transcripts, bringing you both original programming and a round-up of the best and brightest in trans audio. We're a program of the University of Minnesota Libraries. To learn more about us, go to bit.ly/transcriptspod. See you in two weeks for more trans activist brilliance.

We're dropping a bonus track today because we think you need to hear this conversation RIGHT NOW. This is the recording from our show launch event at the Minnesota Institute of Art in Minneapolis. Hear our hosts Myrl Beam and Andrea Jenkins in dialogue with LaSaia Wade (Brave Space Alliance) and Diamond Stylz (Black Transwomen Inc). They discuss the uprisings against white supremacy and police brutality, the relationship between anti-Black racism and COVID-19, and how YOU can help them in their work. The audio is a little wonky because it's a Zoom call. Transcription will be up on our website soon. Even though transgender-themed TV shows like Transparent and Pose have achieved mainstream popularity, trans people still face huge barriers to employment, housing, and safety. In fact, many trans people of color say that their lives are harder than ever before. In this first episode, "I’m Seeing My Liberation Right Now," hosts Myrl Beam (Virginia Commonwealth University and University of Minnesota) and Andrea Jenkins (Minneapolis City Council) investigate how trans activists are grappling with those contradictions - and what they’re doing to change the system. David Chandler an Australian, joins Liam Hooper and Peterson Toscano to talk about the first chapter of the Book of Ruth. Peterson reads from the new anthology Otherwise Christian 2: Stories of Resistance, edited by Mx Chris Paige. He shares a passage from the essay Womanist by Diamond Stylz.  David also shares the "Other Text," the third saying in the Gospel of Thomas.  David Chandler is an actor, singer, writer, magician, bibliophile, amateur folklorist and a spoons-player. Last year they completed their Bachelor of Music Theatre at Federation University, Australia. Right now they are in the midst of doing their Honours in Creative Arts. They are focusing on early queer rights activist and theorist, Karl Henrich Ulrichs. Growing up in the Uniting Church in Australia, they currently find their home with the Quakers. David adores the poems and paintings of Edward Lear. They also love apricot jam on vanilla ice-cream. Follow David on Twitter: @DavidCChandler and see their Facebook page: David is a Magician.  In each episode of Bible Bash Podcast, Liam, a trans queerish man, and co-host, cis gay Bible scholar, Peterson Toscano, take turns presenting the text. They then discuss. In addition, each episode they present an other text, a non-Biblical text of note--religious or secular--that may or may not correspond to the Bible text.  Bible Bash Podcast is a project of Ministries Beyond Welcome.  Our theme song is Playbill by The Jellyrox.
