On today's show, we examine the upsurge in violence against the transgender community. Insider spent 18 months investigating the murders of 175 transgender people over the span of five years, resulting in a published series called “Deaths in the Family.” They found that that murders of trans people have doubled over the last three years, that only three of the murders they investigated were charged as hate crimes, and that only 28 cases resulted in murder convictions. We speak with the editorial consultant on Insider's recent investigative series on anti-trans violence, Diamond Stylz. Diamond is a Black trans activist and the Executive Director of Black Trans Women Inc, a national nonprofit that is led by Black trans women focused on social advocacy, positive visibility, and building strong leadership among Black trans advocates, activists, and their allies. She also produces a podcast called “Marsha's Plate,” which is hosted by three Black trans people exploring pop culture and current events from a Black trans feminist lens. How do attacks on trans organizing and rights impact related movements for bodily autonomy, reproductive justice, and liberation? On episode 51 of "The Activist Files," our Communications Associate Lexi Webster talks with Imara Jones, award-winning journalist, content creator and thought leader, founder of TransLash Media, and host of the TransLash podcast, and Diamond Stylz, activist, media maker, executive director of Black Trans Women Inc., and host of the Marsha's Plate podcast, about how the work of movements for trans justice can inform social justice organizing on all liberation struggles.Their discussion centers around the ways in which an emboldened post-Trump era extremist movement on the right has set into motion a plan whose long-term goal is the creation and enforcement of a white ethnostate and how such a plot relies on the eradication of minorities deemed deviant, the targeting of reproductive rights, and the elimination of any and all protections afforded to trans individuals and communities across the country. They discuss the need for a broad, intersectional approach by progressives who purport to fight for queer and trans liberation, and the continued urgency to build popular momentum for forward-thinking policies by and for Black trans people. They argue that to combat an organized and well-resourced white supremacist Christofascist, nationalist movement would require that the needs of Black trans communities are not only acknowledged, but prioritized by mainstream LGB institutions and that trans-interest groups engage in deeper dialogue and collaboration to provide guidance toward those ends. They also touch on the importance of mutual aid in this work and how our collective eagerness and ability to meet the material needs of Black trans people can act as a litmus test to assess the health of our society and movements.Resources:Organizations and public figures:House of Tulip, New OrleansThe Transgender District, founded by three black trans women in 2017 as Compton's Transgender Cultural District Tourmaline, Black trans artistQuotes and publications:Biopower, theory of Michel Foucault Necropolitics, theory of Achille MbembeRaquel Willis' speech at the 2020 Brooklyn Liberation eventToni Morrison quote Julian K. Don't mind us. We just want a short but official intro episode that we can share across streaming platforms. We are Marsha's Plate, a progressive podcast hosted by three trans people of color. We launched in October of 2017 in response to the 2016 election. We didn't like how the media was covering the trans narrative by focusing just on the bathroom bills popping up all across the country. We wanted to create a show, named after the pioneer Black trans baddie Marsha P. Johnson, that shared the more pressing disparities of the trans community but also the victories and joys of our lives. Our hosts are millennials that represent the feminine and masculine sides of the trans experience. We have been featured on Spotify, ABC, The Root, Stanford, Bitch Media, Aljazeera, World Pride NYC, and at SXSW twice. Our creator and producer Diamond Stylz is a 25-year vet trans activist. She is the executive director of Black Trans Women Inc and a board member of Transfaith. Mia Mix is a Houston socialite and sex worker. LJ aka Jonathan is a black genderqueer trans guy from Milwaukee living in Seattle. We discuss pop-culture current events, sex, relationship, and gender every week. Diamond brings a wide range of experience and formal education and history. Mia Mix makes it hot by bringing humor and Southern belle spirit to every conversation. LJ aka Jonathan brings the masculine, genderqueer trans guy next door perspective. We know that everybody is not invited to the cookout and that this is for us by us. “Once a Friend” (October 1, 1977) Often cited as TV's first sympathetic portrayal of a trans character, this episode of The Jeffersons introduces Edie Stokes as someone who, unlike other trans characters in earlier portrayals, is not at a point of crisis. She's transitioned, she's living the life she wants and she's merely reaching out to her old Navy buddy to say hi — not to get his approval. Drew and Glen are joined by Marsha's Plate host Diamond Stylz to discuss why this episode is not only good for when it aired but also better than many portrayals of trans characters who'd come in the years to follow. Texas HB 25 - Banning transgender student athletes -- Documentary "North by Current"We speak with local transgender activist Diamond Stylz about Texas House Bill 25, the bill banning transgender participation in student sports. We discuss her experience and how this bill will affect LGBT Texans. The Texas House passed HB 25, an anti-transgender sports ban targeting innocent school-age children. Equality Texas, the largest statewide organization solely dedicated to securing full equality for LGBTQ+ Texans, responded: “The passage of HB 25 is a hateful, targeted attack on transgender people living in Texas,” said Ricardo Martinez (he/him), Chief Executive Officer of Equality Texas. “Extremists in our Legislature have continuously leveraged cruel rhetoric and rampant misinformation to coordinate this attack on the transgender community — young children in particular — and have sent a clear message that Texas is not a safe place for them to live. GUEST: Diamond Stylz https://www.equalitytexas.org/for-immediate-release-equality-texas-statement-on-house-passage-of-hb-25/We speak Madsen Minax about the film "North by Current" playing at the Rice Cinema on Friday November 12th at 7:30pm. After the inconclusive death of his young niece, filmmaker Angelo Madsen Minax returns to his rural Michigan hometown, preparing to make a film about a broken criminal justice system. Instead, he pivots to excavate the depths of generational addiction, Christian fervor, and trans embodiment. Lyrically assembled images, decades of home movies, and ethereal narration form an idiosyncratic and poetic undertow that guide a viewer through lifetimes and relationships. Like the relentless Michigan seasons, the meaning of family shifts, as Madsen, his sister, and his parents strive tirelessly to accept each other. Poised to incite more internal searching than provide clear statements or easy answers, NORTH BY CURRENT dives head first into the challenges of creating identity, the agony of growing up, and the ever-fickle nuances of family.GUEST: Madsen Minax http://www.northbycurrent.com/

Liam and Peterson welcome Diamond Stylz to the podcast. She unpacks and repackages the Book of Ruth, while she relentlessly highlights the patriarchy that fuels the narrative. Diamond Stylz is one of the premier voices among the millennial black trans community. Currently, Diamond is the Executive Director of Black Trans Women Inc, a national non-profit that is led by Black trans women focused on social advocacy, economic equity and building strong leadership among Black trans women. Diamond is the host and producer of Marsha's Plate, a weekly podcast that archives and centers the trans social justice movements and pro-black feminist culture. Diamond also contributed an essay the the anthology OtherWise Christian 2: Stories of Resistance. Liam shares the "Other Text," the poem, Gender, by Dr. Joy Ladin from her collection of poems entitled Impersonation. Dr. Ladin was a guest on Bible Bash and spoke about the story of Jonah as a metaphor for her own life. In each episode of Bible Bash Podcast, Peterson, cisgender gay Bible scholar and co-host, Liam Michael Hooper, a trans Bible scholar, take turns presenting the text. They then discuss. In addition, each episode they present another text, a non-Biblical text of note--religious or secular--that may or may not correspond to the Bible text. Bible Bash Podcast is a project of Ministries Beyond Welcome. Our theme song is Playbill by The Jellyrox. It is available on iTunes, Spotify, or through Rock Candy Recordings To share your questions, comments, requests for passages to be discussed, or suggestions for guests who can talk about texts, email Liam & Peterson: ministriesbeyondwelcome@gmail.com Bible Bash Podcast is part of the Rock Candy Network Bible Bash logo was designed by Diana Coe at Crone Communications Check out other Rock Candy podcasts Brown Suga Diaries Sacred Tension by Stephen Long Bubble&Squeak by Peterson Toscano Eleventylife by EleventySeven Common Creatives
I am a fan of the show POSE! I am waiting for Season 3! So with the second snubbing of the cast of my show, I had to say something. Representation includes recognition as well. Remember that.
