Dumbing Down the Future - Mike Judge's Idiocracy This is an especially fun one! This week Mr. Chavez & I take a trip into a very funny, very frightening, and very likely future. In 2006 20th Century Fox released Mike Judge's Idiocracy in a manner that almost guaranteed that no one would ever see it.  . . . but the film would survive. Judge's bleak and pessiimistic vision of the future - the year 2505 - would find a cult audience that would embrace its hilarious prediction of a Professional Wrestler President, warehouse stores as a kind of Mecca, Fast-Food Restaurants as cheap, disgusting food and sex providers, and a population of such minimal intelligence that an "Average Joe" cryogenically frozen and awoken in the future would find himself the "Smartest Man on Earth". Judge spares no targets and we are grateful for the ride Idiocracy takes its viewers on. There's a whole lot to unpack here. Great Satire is usually ahead of its time and that is surely the case with this film. Judge would later joke, "I'm no prophet, I was off by 490 years." Sadly, he was right. There's a bit of pushback coming from some sectors in the education business towards the reading, writing, and maths tests. These are the tests we are failing. Those who are failing mostly come from poor backgrounds. I'm not sure equating monetary status and academic success should be a thing. But a bunch of principals from the "poorest communities" have got together to lobby the Government to stop the tests because they say it will lead to more kids leaving school with no qualifications. After two rounds of these tests more than half failed reading and writing and 75% failed numeracy. You can't get university entrance if you don't get these grades. Now, there is no doubt that failure affects attitude and there is equally no doubt that for some the “give it up” scenario must be tempting if the hurdle is too high. But then there's also no doubt that allowing kids to leave school having failed is a failure in and of itself. Any country that has any level of success globally is not a country that goes soft on education. The principals' answer is the answer that has failed us for years, which is also the Chris Hipkins Covid answer - give them something for nothing. An alternative to an exam is the extra 20 credits scenario that is due to expire at the end of 2027. They want that made permanent and instead of 20 credits they want it made into 60 credits. So, like Hipkins and Covid, extra credits for not actually doing anything. Just extra credits for life being a bit crap right now. No one gains when we do this. It is excuse making. It is an acceptance that we fail, and are failing, and failure is part of what we do. You can either read and write or you can't. You can either add up or you can't. And if you can't, having people pretend you can, won't fix anything. Part of why this country is where it is, is because we are apologists in areas like this and instead of being determined to fix it, we set about looking for ways to excuse it. Everybody knows America's public school systems have fallen in ratings and standards these past years, and are failing to educate children in the ways they need to lead fruitful, prosperous lives. But it's not enough to be aware of the sad state of America's education systems. It's high time to do something about it. Lott, Jr., is an economist and a world-recognized expert on guns and crime and also founder of The Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC).  During the Trump administration, he served as the Senior Advisor for Research and Statistics in the Office of Justice Programs and then the Office of Legal Policy in the U.S. Department of Justice. Lott has held research or teaching positions at various academic institutions, including the University of Chicago, Yale University, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford University, UCLA, and Rice University, and was the chief economist at the United States Sentencing Commission during 1988-1989. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from UCLA. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Dumbing down, published by Martin Sustrik on June 9, 2024 on LessWrong. In past few years I've been blogging in Slovak, that is, downscaling from writing in English, a language with 1457 million speakers to a language with 7 million speakers. From the point of view of the writer, this has been a very different experience. It's not only that for a topic that interests one million English speakers, the equivalent is five thousand in Slovakia, scaling down by factor of 200. It's also that topic that interests 100 English speakers, interests one half of a hypothetical Slovak speaker, that is, nobody. In fact, not everybody reads blogs, so the population in question is likely smaller by an order of magnitude or even two, resulting in even more fractional Slovaks... In other words, the reader population is not as big as to fill in all the possible niches and the writing thus has to become much more generic. It must also be "dumbed down". Not because Slovaks are less intelligent than other nations, but because the scale of the existing discourse is much smaller. While in English, not matter how esoteric your topic is, you can reference or link to the relevant discussion, in Slovak it often is the case that there's no discussion at all. The combination of the two factors above means that you have to explain yourself all the time. You want to mention game theory? You have to explain what do you mean. You want to make a physics metaphor? You can't, if you care about being understood. You want to hint at some economic phenomenon? You have to explain yourself again. And often even the terminology is lacking. Even such a basic word as "policy" has no established equivalent. I had to ask a friend who works as a translator at the European Commission, just to be told that they use word "politika" for this purpose. Which is definitely not a common meaning of the word. "Politika" typically means "politics" and using it for "policy" sounds really strange and awkward. (All of this gave me gut-level understanding of how small populations can lose knowledge. Joe Henrich mentions a case of small Inuit population getting isolated from the rest and gradually losing technology, including the kayak building skills, which in turn made it, in a vicious circle, unable to import other technology. This kind of thing also tends to be mentioned when speaking of dropping fertility rates and possible inability of a smaller global population to keep the technology we take for granted today. Well, I can relate now.) Anyway, it's interesting to look at what kind of topics were popular in such a scaled-down environment. Rebecca Baumgartner recently drew attention to the habit of many authors of popular nonfiction to write for an “audience of imagined idiots.” The folk wisdom these days is that regular folks just don't like to think and that the only way to get them to do serious intellectual work is to lure them with charming anecdotes and digestible little nuggets.
