From 2011 to 2016 I would often find myself in Corvallis, Oregon. I'd fall in love with the fall foliage, the beautiful dimes from Sean Mannion, the crisp routes by Brandin Cooks and the production meetings with Mike Riley. But above all of that, what I enjoyed the most were Friday afternoons.Post meetings and post practice I would find myself alongside one of the most positive, optimistic and talented coaches in the nation and for an hour we would run the campus while talking about life, coaching philosophy and his family. If you haven't figured it out yet, that man was Brent Brennan.Back in the day it was clear that he had a vision for what he felt coaching was and while the X's and O's were a major part of that – Brent's voice always took a different tone when he spoke about culture, team building and leadership. Not a surprise when you learn about his late father, Steve, who played WR at San Jose State. Not a shocker when you learn how the great Dick Tomey poured into him. And definitely not a surprise when you meet his wife, Courtney, who is a total rock star and went pseudo viral with her recruiting of Noah Fifita. When he was named the head coach at San Jose State in 2017, I would visit with him once or twice per year and have him on my podcast, and each time his passion for culture only grew. After winning the Mountain West Championship, he wasn't looking for the next best job, he was competing to be the absolute best version of himself as the leader of young men. He spent his off-season learning from the likes of Phil Jackson, among many others. Since Brent Brennan has arrived at Arizona he has continued to place dramatic emphasis on culture, team building and grounded principles that have led his past teams to success. He's on the razor's edge of high performance when it comes to bringing people together to truly tap into who they are, and what sports can do for them. And in an era when most conversations are, at times, are filled with NIL, transfer portal and media rights dialogue – Brent Brennan is leading his new program into discussions around commitment, connection and ‘ohana.Presented by our founding partner 76, I hope you enjoy our conversion from Big-12 Media Days and learn a little bit more about what makes Brent Brennan the man that he is.And I'd bet he would recommend that you listen on a run. I would. This episode is produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Jessica Altman. This podcast is a Best Coast Media production. Unlike Jedd Fisch, Dick Tomey came into Tucson looking to take over for Arizona football coaching royalty. And many look back fondly on the era. But Tomey wasn't able to capitalize on the benefits of putting together multiple top 10 seasons. John Mackovic never got the ship into the ocean. Welcome to the second season of our podcast. The quote for this episode is from Dick Tomey "We want to be known for the way we play, not the way we look." Dick Tomey Jeff Hammerschmidt has coached on the collegiate level since 1991 with previous stops at Cal Poly, Montana, Saint Mary's, Indiana, Southern Utah, Colorado state, and Arizona. He was a coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 2016 to 2020, finishing his career as the assistant special team's coach of the New York Jets. Over his five years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 23-57-0. Hammerschmidt coached the linebackers at Cal Poly in 2005. From 2003-04, he was Montana's defensive coordinator and secondary coach that followed a three-season stint at Saint Mary's (2000-02) as the Gaels' defensive coordinator and defensive line coach. You can find coach Hammerschmidt at Syracuse as special teams analyst. He spent two seasons (1998-99) at Indiana coaching outside linebackers and special teams after two years as the defensive coordinator at Southern Utah (1996-97). He began his coaching career at his alma mater as a graduate assistant under Dick Tomey in 1992. He was Arizona's defensive backs coach from 1993-95, helping the Wildcats lead the nation in passing defense in 1995. Hammerschmidt, who earned a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from Arizona in 1991, was a four-year letter-winner (1987-90) and two-time All-Pac-10 selection as a defensive back for the Wildcats. He helped his team to two bowl games (1989 Insight Bowl, 1990 Aloha Bowl), and was selected to play in the Japan Bowl and Hula Bowl following his senior season. He went on to play for the Los Angeles Rams during their 1991 training camp and for the Frankfurt Galaxy of the World League in 1992 under head coach Jack Elway. The San Diego native graduated from Helix High School, where he was chosen as one of the Top 100 all-time high school football players from the San Diego area by the San Diego Union-Tribune. Hammerschmidt and his wife, Felicity, have one daughter, Bryn (born May 6, 2005) --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lifeacpov/support

Breakdown (44 Minutes) (2:00) Offering condolences to Dick Tomey's family and reflecting on his legacy as the head coach at University of Arizona. (3:45) Suns forward Josh Jackson was arrested for attempting to sneak into a music festival's VIP section, and charged with a felony for running away from police. How should Suns fans feel about Jackson at this point, and should the franchise move on from the former #4 overall pick? (10:50) Max Kellerman said Larry Fitzgerald's hall of fame candidacy would be based on 'longevity.' I think Kellerman would have sounded less crazy if he made the argument that Fitz was the best wide receiver of all time. (19:40) Centennial High has won a handful of football championships, and stands alone as the premier program in the West Valley, but recently, drama has swirled around the program as people on the periphery call into question whether the team is doing enough to help kids get scholarship offers. I dive into the nonsense to outline why I've always enjoyed covering Centennial, and whether I feel the criticisms are appropriate.
John Daly is trying to get approval to use a cart this weekend. Tiger Woods commented on the subject, clearly not in support. (Will they even make the tournament anyway). We also get Jon's thoughts on Dick Tomey, the latest on the Arizona scandal, and his thoughts on the Warriors in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
