Then the conversation turns into a powerful reality check for school owners: today's families are overwhelmed, attention spans are shorter, and “flavor of the month” thinking is real. So what do you do? You set expectations early, you educate parents consistently, and you build systems that reinforce responsibility and attitude—without apologizing for it. Duane shares his school's practical “responsibility strikes” and “attitude strikes” structure, and the group explores the tradeoff every owner has to make: standards will repel some people, but they'll also attract and keep the right people. The challenge is that the public only recognizes a few labels (MMA, BJJ, kickboxing). That's the deeper product you're selling: Self-belief Confidence under pressure Resilience Identity change Belts are just the measuring stick. Action Steps for School Owners 1) Write your “brand translation” in parent language Create a simple 3-part statement you can use everywhere: What we do: (training approach + culture) How we do it: (standards + curriculum + coaching) What it creates: (confidence, discipline, resilience) If you can't say it in 20 seconds, it's not ready yet. 2) Audit your lobby and training floor for brand alignment Walk in like a new parent and ask: Does this place feel like what we claim? What are the first 3 things a parent sees? Are our values visible (not just spoken)? Then pick one upgrade that makes your culture obvious. 3) Build one “standard system” you can enforce consistently If you're constantly frustrated about uniforms, gear, or behavior, don't rely on reminders alone. Pick one system and make it automatic: Responsibility strikes Attitude strikes Testing eligibility requirements The key is consistency. Families can handle strict. They can't handle random. 4) Put standards into onboarding (not just correction) Don't wait until a problem happens. During onboarding, clearly explain: “This is a school.” “There's curriculum and responsibility.” “Here's what happens if your child is unprepared repeatedly.” When parents know the rules early, enforcement feels fair. 5) Teach parents what to look for (and what to ignore) Parents will chase labels (BJJ, MMA, kickboxing). Your job is to reframe: “Here's what well-rounded training actually includes.” “Here's why character development requires standards.” “Here's what progress looks like over months, not days.” Education isn't a one-time talk. It's ongoing. Boston Consulting Group leader Gabriella Rosen Kellerman studied what actually happens to people who are using AI intensively at work, and what she found is that beyond a certain point, something breaks. Not burnout. Something different, something the existing research wasn't equipped to explain, and something that organisations are currently making worse without realising it. So Mike, great to catch up with you.Mike Rowe:Thanks,Russ White:Russ. Great to be here. And Sage, good to have you on the show.Sage Kellerman:Yeah, thank you.Speaker 1 (00:17):Mike could just start, give us a little bit of your background and what first attracted you to MSU as a student back in the day?Speaker 2 (00:25):Interesting. I started out of high school. I went to western Michigan for a year. And I'm going to be honest, this wasn't crazy about that atmosphere or whatever was going on or wasn't going on there, but Michigan State, just basketball had just won the national championship with magic and the cheerleaders had just won their national championship and all this. And I was like, I had friends coming here, I'm thinking I'm going to move across the state, I'm going to transfer. I wasn't doing anything with my major, was kind of interested in the landscape architecture puts around with that for a little bit. But the main thing that attracted me was just the environment, the huge big 10 collegiate feel and the athleticism and football obviously. I tried out for cheer my first season here, contemplated walking onto the men's team, but the cheer team needed Tumblrs in that I could do.(01:16):So was fortunate enough to do that. And yeah, the rest was history with that. Did it for my entire career here. I think I was on the five year program here, but I cheered for four and in 84 we were second at the national championships, which was very cool. And obviously the thrill of it was traveling with the football and the basketball teams. We only cheered for two sports at that point and just traveling and the comradery of, I think there was 20 people on the team and it was so much fun. It kind of consumed me. I probably could have been a better student, I'm not going to lie. We didn't have academic resources like they do now, but did as well as I could, but just had a great time. My sister ended up transferring here from Central Michigan and we were partners for a couple of years, so that was kind of cool. My parents thought it was, yeah, and graduated with a bachelor of landscape architecture and was minoring in musical theater, but ended up buying a one way ticket to the west coast and jumped right into musical theater right away. SoSpeaker 1 (02:29):A little bit then of how the YMSU experience impacted you, prepare you for your professional life.Speaker 2 (02:36):Interesting. I think the performance aspect of it, because even though I was majoring in landscape architecture and I was still interested in it, didn't know what I was going to do with it at the time, but the cheer and the dance, I was actually taking dance courses on the side at Ace of Dance Studio across the street, across Grand River from campus and kind of got the bug for that. So when I moved up to the west coast, was very fortunate and got some shows right away basically because of my gymnastics, if they were musicals, my extracurricular activities at MSU are what prepared me for the rest of my life kind of thing. It wasn't really academia, but yeah, it just, one thing led to another and I was very fortunate to write a wave of show after show after show through networking choreographers, directors, people I had worked with before, didn't have to audition a lot, so that was gymnastics and tumbling was starting to become a big kind of revolution and the musical theater aspect and timing was everything. I was in the right place at the right time.Speaker 1 (03:42):Well, Sage Kellerman, tell us a little bit about what attracted you to MSU and a little bit of your background.Speaker 3 (03:49):My family has always been Spartan fans, so that was obviously something that I've always kind of wanted to go to Michigan State. I was talking to Michigan State before and then I quit. So then obviously I wasn't talking to them anym...

In this episode, Clark and Matt return to the topic of Leadership Development. Is traditional leadership development a worthy endeavor for most organizations? Well, the research, or lack thereof, indicates that at best, it is questionable, and at worst, it may actually undermine or act at cross purposes to what the company strives to attain.  Of course, in the end, they propose what they think might work more effectively. It's about context! Matt and Clark discuss four inherent issues with traditional leadership development, based on Matt's booklet on the topic, available for free download here: https://members.ldaccelerator.com/c/what-is-lda-press/leadership-development-the-four-issues-that-undermine-traditional-leadership-development-programs-3f451f4a-a52a-4ebe-9561-3d4e32cc23ba The Lacerenza, et. al. meta-analysis is below in the references.  Matt makes the case for a definition problem. In other words, we are rarely clear or consistent in our use of the word leadership. Because of this lack of agreement on what the term means, and more importantly, what knowledge, skills, abilities, and values embody effective leadership, it is very difficult to design effective learning.  They highlight the misalignment between what gets espoused by the "experts," the stakeholders in the organization, and the learning team, with how leadership actually shows up behaviorally in practice. Also, there is a tendency for all parties to idealize the factors that make up leadership and ignore, or sweep under the rug, some of the more nefarious behaviors that support leader outcomes.  Next, there is validity and reliability. When the learning team decides what to teach, is the model, the process, or the tools supported by research and experience? Do they work consistently over time? Matt uses Servant Leadership as an example. Of course, given the next problem of context, we know they are not consistent. But we make matters worse when we also use models unsupported by evidence and research… or, we use models that work once or twice in practice… but not in all circumstances. Finally, Clark and Matt explore the problem of the said context. Shifting situations, people, crises, opportunities, technology, and more make the environment in which one leads always unique and difficult to predict. What works today tends not to work tomorrow. What didn't work yesterday may work today.  Matt raises the Keith Grint model of leadership based on wicked, tame, and critical problems. Throughout the discussion, they reference lots of leadership and leadership development researchers and thought leaders (references below). They mention Jeffrey Pfeffer, Barbara Kellerman, Ronald Riggio, John Kotter, Warren Bennis, Bert Nanus, and David Grad.  Clark mentions the Cynefin framework by Dave Snowden as an alternative to the Grint framework.
