No. 18 BYU football found a way to pull off the win over the Arizona Wildcats to remain undefeated. The Cougars knocked off Arizona on Parents Weekend, 33-27, in double overtime. BYU trailed 24-14 in the fourth quarter but stormed back, led by true freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier. Bachmeier scored a rushing touchdown at the end of regulation and in double overtime. Arizona quarterback Noah Fifita had a strong performance along with the 3-3-5 Wildcats defense, but it was BYU that came up with the key plays to get the victory to improve to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in Big 12 play before next week's game against rival Utah. Arizona's Brent Brennan struggled in his first season in Tucson. The roster overall struggled to find success in the schemes ran by Brennan and his offensive coordinator Dino Babers. It made perfect sense - stepping away allowed them to recharge, gain new perspectives, and pour into their families. In the coaching profession, I've always believed sabbaticals should be the norm. Every coach I've met who has taken a year off, whether by choice or due to job circumstances, has experienced tremendous growth.Pete Carroll famously reinvented his coaching philosophy during his year off. Chip Kelly, Dan Mullen, Urban Meyer, and Bill Belichick all spent time in TV roles before returning to head coaching jobs. He offers insight and analysis into Mario Cristobal's team, which Bruce thinks is their most talented team in 20 years.Having played on the same field as that team 22 years ago, I'd have to agree.This year's ‘Canes may not be better, but they have a QB who is simply special in Cam Ward.Former Cal WR, founder of Elite 11, and mentor Andy Bark reminded me today that the state of California has always had an impact on the QB position at Miami. Players like Heisman winner Gino Torretta, Ken Dorsey, Kyle Wright, Brad Kaaya and more have been gone from the Golden State to QB1 for the Hurricanes. Ironically, the Cal Bears starting QB Fernando Mendoza hails from Miami and Christopher Columbus High School, which Mario Cristobal also attended.
