John came into the Get Back project only one fully formed new song, "All I Want Is You," later re-named as "Dig A Pony." After a possibly initial ambivalent reaction, the band tightened it up as the first song recorded in their own Apple Studios. It eventually found it's true home on the rooftop of Apple on a cold January day, where the band nailed it in one rock solid take. The song lumbers and moves in weird ways, almost like a giant kind of stomping slowly, while John delivers a fantastic vocal of some kind of wordplay I've never really understood. Musically, it's just so good though. The riff is classic rock guitar at it's core, held down by the most perfect subdued drumming from Ringo, and a jagged and refined yet unexpected solo from George. It's such an odd song, but it feels so good, you can't not love it. Joining us this week is New Orleans-based songwriter and producer Nicholas Dayton! Nick writes songs for Sesame Street, which is maybe the coolest job you could ever have. He's also done some acting, and been seen on 30 Rock and Nickoldeon. Add to that he plays bass in a 60s cover band AND an Elton John tribute? It's like a found a long lost sibling! Join us as we chat about hearing Big Bird sing a song you wrote, Lin-Manuel Miranda, 60s music, and so much more! What do you think about Dig A Pony at 82? Too high? Too low? 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of the release of the Beatles' final album, Let it Be. To commemorate the occasion, the remaining members of the band have remixed the album and unleashed an eight-hour-plus documentary directed by Peter Jackson that lays bare the making of the record. For super-fans this video memoir reveals a lot about the messiness of the creative process: The Beatles nearly broke up while making it! Author Tim Riley says that the band approached Let It Be with an aesthetic challenge: to get back to playing as a live band. But the original release of the album deviated from that mission and received mixed reviews. Over the decades, The Beatles have revisited this work with multiple mixes and alternative takes that try to show the original spirit of this direct-to-tape, live album. Charlie and Nate listen back, warts and all, to get to the heart of this enigmatic project. It was a quiet Thursday morning on January, 30th 1969 as the garment district of London went about their work week. The cold winter air suddenly crackled with a sound from the rooftop of 3 Saville Row - the biggest band in the world were performing their brand new album. This rooftop performance marked the ending of the Get Back project, providing the live finale to what had evolved into a concert film. It was an iconic moment, but one born of frustration by a band that was nearing the end of their capabilities to creatively fulfill one another - four people who had been so close but whom had drifted so far apart in a relatively short period of time. As Paul fought to preserve the group in the form that had brought them to unsurpassed heights of success, John and Yoko’s battle with heroin addiction left a void in the band’s leadership, and George’s battle for musical independence and recognition was simply lost in the shuffle, falling on the deaf ears of bandmates. The songs from the era say it all: John sang to Yoko “all I want is you” in Dig A Pony and pleaded “don’t let me down”, George gave his eulogy for the past with All Things Must Pass and Paul grieved with denial (Two of Us), bargaining (Get Back), depression (The Long and Winding Road) and finally acceptance (Let it Be). Paul’s Get Back project was meant to redefine the Beatles’ purpose and align their sights toward the future as a unified group, but despite his best efforts all the project did was show the band just how far they had fallen -- it was shelved indefinitely. I am delighted to have as my first guest, bassist, composer, recording artist Chris Lightcap. Chris has played and collaborated with an amazing array of musicians: he is a regular in Regina Carter’s band, and over the years has played with Marc Ribot, Craig Taborn, Glen Hansard, Mark Turner, John Medeski, Jason Moran, Chris Potter and many more. His playing is featured on over 60 albums and as a bandleader/composer he has produced four critically acclaimed albums of original music–in 2000 he released his first solo album, Lay-up, followed that up with “Bigmouth” in 2002, Deluxe in 2010 and his 2015 release, the spectacular Epicenter, was featured as an “A” list jazz pick by Apple Music back in July and has received glowing critical reviews. It took us a few weeks to get our schedules in sync to do the interview, and I learned from Chris that syncing schedules with other musicians is actually one of the more significant challenges when making a collaborative record. We wasted no time getting down to our conversation, in fact we dove right in talking about his recent trip to Bogota, Columbia, more on that in a moment.
