The Best International Feature category at the Academy Awards has grown in prominence over the years, coinciding with the inclusion of more international voters. It’s now meant more films typically confined to the Best International Feature category are now making their way to the conversation for Best Picture. This year, I’m Still Here and Emilia Perez serve as examples of films being nominated in both categories. In the recent past, we’ve seen the likes of Drive My Car and Parasite gain recognition from Academy voters in both categories. For this week’s FilmWeek feature, we’ll focus on this year’s crop of films for Best International Feature, and discuss our critics’ favorites. Joining us are Manuel Betancourt, Lael Loewenstein, and Christy Lemire.

Summary Andrew is currently working for a company called Practice CFO, a fractional CFO financial planning company for dentists and healthcare professionals. He is 37 years old and he has a net worth of $2.125 million, broken up into real estate and paper assets. His paper assets include a mix of index funds, ETFs, bonds, and REITs. Andrew is a long-term investor and is not concerned about short-term market fluctuations. He maxes out his retirement accounts and also invests in real estate syndicates, including single-family rentals, student housing, vacation rentals, and build-to-rent properties. He prioritizes filling up his tax-advantaged retirement accounts and then invests the rest in real estate or the brokerage account. Andrew keeps some cash available for opportunistic real estate investments. Andrew's main goal is to have a net worth of $5 million by age 45. He values financial freedom and the ability to buy time. He pursued a career in finance and strategy, working for companies like Dell and Vrbo. However, he felt unfulfilled and wanted more intellectual stimulation. He started doing fractional work for a friend's business and found it fulfilling. This led him to make the leap from corporate America to a small business environment. Andrew believes in working hard, serving others, and finding fulfillment in work. He emphasizes the importance of experiences and travel. He has maintained his financial habits and focuses on offense rather than defense with money. The Beatles Made a Mistake - Mike Cohn It should be a comfort to each of us to know that we'll probably never make a mistake as big as the one The Beatles made during this week in 1966.Following the critical and sales success of the prior year's “Rubber Soul” album, the Beatles released a new album, “Yesterday and Today,” in June 1966. The album was released in the US and Canada and contained songs that had been withheld from North American versions of other Beatles albums.Musically, it's a solid album featuring “Drive My Car,” “Nowhere Man,” “We Can Work It Out,” “Day Tripper,” and of course “Yesterday.”Where The Beatles went wrong was in the choice of the album art. The cover photo shows all four Beatles wearing white butcher's frocks with decapitated baby dolls and pieces of raw meat in their laps. The photo is in incredibly bad taste even to the less sensitive standards of 1966.I'm sharing this because on this day in 1966, The Beatles admitted their mistake and replaced the cover.I think The Beatles' experience with this botched album cover decision holds four lessons.First, it's important to acknowledge that when a team is moving quickly, team members will make some mistakes. “Yesterday and Today” was The Beatles' twelfth album released in North America in four years.Second, when you make a mistake, be willing to admit it. The Beatles did not blame their label for picking the cover. In fact, band members insisted on the cover over the label's objection. The Beatles said the cover was meant to be a protest against the savagery of the Vietnam War. I've always been skeptical of that as it seemed like an after-the-fact justification, but I appreciate that they owned the mistake.Third, correct mistakes as quickly and cost-effectively as possible. The Beatles corrected their mistake by recalling all the albums and pasting a new cover on top of the original.A few savvy DJs and record store owners did not return all the albums. This created a lucrative collector's market in copies of “Yesterday and Today” with the original cover. I've seen some sell for nearly $40,000.Finally, after correcting the mistake, put the memory aside and move on. After the cover debacle of “Yesterday and Today,” The Beatles went on to make some of their greatest albums including “Revolver,” “Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,” the white album, and “Abbey Road.”Mistakes happen. I make them. You make them. Your team makes them. Even The Beatles made mistakes.Let's acknowledge that mistakes will happen when moving quickly. Then, when we do make a mistake, let's own it, correct it, and move beyond it.It's quite possible, as it was for The Beatles, that your best work may follow your biggest mistake, How to connect with AgileDad: - [website] https://www.agiledad.com/ - [instagram] https://www.instagram.com/agile_coach/ - [facebook] https://www.facebook.com/RealAgileDad/ - [Linkedin] https://www.linkedin.com/in/leehenson/

This week there's a music documentary, an eco-fable set in Japan, and Dave's favorite cinematic subgenre: Australian detective stories starring Eric Bana! To start things, Dave fills Megan and Evan in on Michael Lindsay-Hogg's remastered LET IT BE, which crawled so Peter Jackson's GET BACK could fuggin' sprint. Megan watched EVIL DOES NOT EXIST, said eco-fable, which focuses on a village near Tokyo and a clamping site being developed nearby. This is Ryusuke Hamaguchi's follow-up to the much-lauded DRIVE MY CAR. Finally, everyone saw FORCE OF NATURE: THE DRY 2, which features Bana reprising the role of Aaron Falk from THE DRY. (Aside: (Dave and Evan's alternate title: THE WET, as this story is set almost entirely in a rain forest.) Of course, Dave can't resist doing his bad Australian accent and giggling uncontrollably. But is THE DRY 2 good? We let you know! Over on Patreon we talk about the 1979 comedy THE FRISCO KID starring Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford.

"Evil Does Not Exist" had its world premiere at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its direction and writing from Ryūsuke Hamaguchi, and score by Japanese singer-songwriter and musician Eiko Ishibashi. Following their collaboration on the Oscar-winning film, "Drive My Car," the two intended to make a 30-minute short film accompanied by a live score. But as the production got lengthier and the shoot went along, Hamaguchi decided to turn it into a feature film with dialogue, which is the film we have today. Ishibashi was kind enough to sit and talk with us about her latest work which can be listened to below. Fresh off of scoring Evil Does Not Exist, composer Eiko Ishibashi joins The Film Scorer podcast! Evil Does Not Exist is Eiko's second collaboration with acclaimed director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, and the film itself actually stemmed from Eiko approaching Ryusuke regarding providing visuals for her live performance. Evil Does Not Exist grew out of that, while also spawning the film Gift, a sort of "composer's cut" of Evil Does Not Exist, which removes spoken dialogue and focuses on Eiko's music. Not surprisingly, we compare and contrast her work on Evil Does Not Exist and her prior score, Drive My Car (the Oscar winner for Best International Film). Along the way, we also cover things like Eiko's approach to music and preference to giving control to the director, trends in Japanese film music, and more.  Note that this is an interpreted interview, so you'll hear snippets of Eiko's responses in Japanese but the answers are primarily via English translation. You can find out more about Eiko on her website. Eiko's score releases digitally and on physical media on June 28, and Evil Does Not Exist is currently in theaters.

On this week's episode of Grease the Wheels, we get into the nitty gritty when it comes to test driving customers' vehicles. Any manager who says that you should blindly test drive a vehicle before putting it up on a lift to see if it is structurally sound should listen to this episode. The aforementioned pitch can be a seriously bad idea, especially if that vehicle has serious problems. We have all seen the “just rolled into the shop” posts where a vehicle shouldn't have even made it into the shop, and we get into some of the dangers that driving a vehicle like that can pose to both the technician and the general public.  We also get into some of the most dangerous cities in America to drive, but for most of them they really have no excuses compared to some of the other parts of the country that go through all four seasons in one afternoon. We also get a bit scientific with the idea that most people are too oblivious to know that they are bad at driving, as well as what happens with your brain when you get into an unpleasant smelling customer car. Also Uncle Jimmy classes-up “truck nuts” and recreates classic Dukes of Hazzard stunts with his mom's Vega.

Interview with Ramona Jan of The Comateens  Part 2 The Comateens were one of NYC's earliest synth-punk bands, along with Suicide and Kraftwerk one of the few live bands to perform with a drum machine. Jan and North formed the band in 1978, bonding over their shared love of merely playing music together and the punk rock scene taking shape in downtown NYC. Singer and synth player Lyn Byrd and drummer Harry Viderci joined shortly afterwards. Both cuts were recorded at Mediasound in 1979 with Jan on guitar, North on bass, Byrd on synths and Viderci playing drums. Don Wersheba and Harvey J. Goldberg engineered; Ray Janos was the mastering engineer. The Comateens' Ramona Jan and Nicholas “Nic North” Dembling had just gotten started when they recorded “Danger Zone,” a sneering, blaring punk song spit-sung by Nicholas with Ramona Jan's untutored guitars sounding like an electric razor, a catchy chorus floating in from Jan's love of Motown. “Elizabeth's Lover” leans toward 60's girl-group with a gleeful chorus as taunting and addictive as “My Boyfriend's Back.” The song marks Jan's turn from punk rock to new wave. “Danger Zone” was originally backed with “Cool Chick,” recorded during the same session and released independently on Teenmaster Records. Jan left the band shortly after recording these songs due to a series of unfortunate misunderstandings, so this version of “Elizabeth's Lover” was never released. Jan recorded it again, later, with Dizzy and the Romilars. Left for Dead's James Reynolds considered releasing the original “Danger Zone” single on his Jimboco Records, however he put out Dizzy and the Romilars' version of “Elizabeth's Lover” in 1980 instead, followed by the Ramona Jan-produced NastyFacts single “Drive My Car” in ‘81. The band was able to record at Mediasound because Jan was an audio engineer there, one of only a handful of women engineers in the world. On the then-gritty Upper West Side, Jan lived cheaply at the bohemian Bretton Hall on the corner of Broadway and 86th Street, dodging pimps and prostitutes on the elevator to her apartment. The building's low rent also attracted other types of artists, though, and a neighbor heard her singing, knocked on the door and asked her if she'd want to record. The neighbor worked at Mediasound Studio in Midtown. Jan took one look around and realized she just had to work there. She told the boss she'd wanted to be a recording engineer all her life—a lie—and that her mother was an electrician, her father a piano tuner, another falsehood. She was hired on the spot and thrived, kicking off a lifelong career in engineering and production that led to work with Brian Eno, Talking Heads, Ramones (who wrote “Ramona” about her.) and more. Comateens continued after Jan left the band, recording three full lengths and building a dedicated following in France before breaking up in the mid-1980s. Their biggest hit was a cover of the “Munster's Theme Song,” recorded in 1981. Ramona Jan has also had an active career in music since, performing with Dizzy and the Romilars and more recently Northeast Regional Folk Alliance award winners, JANTURAN. She was a founding member Venus Fly Trap, an all-female vocal group, whose members Soozie Tyrell and Lisa Lowell now tour with Bruce Springsteen. Venus Fly Trap sang with David Johansen's Buster Poindexter act and won the 1984 Village Voice Award Best Street Performer. Jan is also a writer, the author of the first biography of Jon Bon Jovi, published by Sony. She recently received the 2023 Upper Delaware Council Cultural Award as well as a 2023 Congressional Award for her work as Director of Yarnslingers, a true storytelling group based in the Catskills. She is currently the Tuesday columnist for the award-winning Sullivan County Democrat with her column, Ramona's Ramblings. https://www.leftfordeadrecords.com/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/445047024405291 https://www.instagram.com/leftfordeadrecs/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comateens, https://comateens.com/

This week we're excited to present an archival conversation between journalist & author Min Jin Lee and Drive My Car director Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, whose new film, Evil Does Not Exist, will make its U.S. premiere as a Main Slate selection of the 61st New York Film Festival. Inspired by a Haruki Murakami short story, Ryûsuke Hamaguchi spins an engrossing, rapturous epic about love and betrayal, grief and acceptance. With his characteristic emotional transparency, Hamaguchi charts the unexpected, complex relationships that theater actor-director Yûsuke Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima) forges with a trio of people out of professional, physical, or psychological necessity: his wife, Oto (Reika Kirishima), with whom he shares an erotic bond forged in fantasy and storytelling; the mysterious actor Takatsuki (Masaki Okada), whom he's drawn to by a sense of revenge as much as fascination; and, perhaps most mysteriously, Misaki (Tôko Miura), a plaintive young woman hired by a theater company, against his wishes, to be his chauffeur while he stages Uncle Vanya. Hamaguchi specializes in revelations of the heart, and Drive My Car—a beautiful melding of two distinct authorial sensibilities—consistently steers clear of the familiar in its characters' journeys towards self-examination. Winner of Best Screenplay at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.
