James Marriott traces the flows of Britain's global oil empire in the 20th century, from a village in Nigeria to The Beatles' 1965 vinyl, Drive My Car. Penned by Paul McCartney and John Lennon in 1965, ‘Drive my Car' transported The Beatles on their way to international success. It is the soundtrack of the British empire of the 1960s, characterised by pop culture domination and high-powered men in business suits, rather than top hats and general's uniforms. This ‘late empire' was built on petrol, plastics, airplanes and vinyl records - which permeated British homes and everyday lives. Tracing the crude oil connections between Ogoni in Nigeria to refineries in Wales, and the colonial heritage of businesses like Shell-BP, James Marriott exposes the pipeline politics underlying Britain's global empire of oil. PRESENTER: James Marriott, writer and activist at Platform. He is the co-author of Crude Britannia: How Oil Shaped a Nation with Terry Macalister, published by Pluto Press in 2021. He is executive producer of THE OIL MACHINE (2022), a documentary film screening across the UK in November 2022. ART: Vinyl Record of Drive My Car, The Beatles (1965). Daniel shares hisol opinion with the critics that it is a beautiful meditation on grief and art. Connor thinks it is long, boring and pretentious. Will these two knuckleheads ever see eye to eye on anything again? Or will this descend into a mutual therapy session that has little to do with the film and much more to do with their personal lives? Only one way to find out! Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

Composition by Christina Wong. "I was initially inspired by Eiko Ishibashi's beautiful soundtrack to the film Drive My Car and how she wove the sounds of the car, of driving so seamlessly into the music and I wanted to see how I, too, could incorporate this notion of driving along per se into my own piece. But the more I worked on it, the more it evolved into something different altogether. I started with the sound of the handbrake. I wanted it to be almost like a clock ticking. You know it's there, but sometimes you don't always notice it (the handbrake, or time). It then took a while for me to fully realize what I wanted to do with the composition, but I knew I wanted the music to represent a journey of some sort. I've been struggling with stress, burnout and self-doubt, especially this past year, to the point I didn't feel as present or feel like myself. So in a sense, this piece became about a journey of letting go. Letting go of those worries and stress; letting go of the expectations and perceptions people have of you and freeing yourself to do the things that make you happy, even if it's not what people think is conventional; letting go and letting loose once in a while; and letting go and simply be in the moment." This is part of the Obsolete Sounds project, the world's biggest collection of disappearing sounds and sounds that have become extinct – remixed and reimagined to create a brand new form of listening. Explore the whole project at https://citiesandmemory.com/obsolete-sounds

The 2022 Oscars will forever go down as the day Will Smith non-jokingly slapped Chris Rock in the face on national television. Also, some people won awards and stuff! Todd, Lara, Andrea, and I provide fresh, initial thoughts on our feelings on the smack, the winners, the losers, and the films we will definitely be watching as a result. EPISODE NOTES: The following are the 2022 Oscars Best Picture nominations and our opinions on if you should watch: "Belfast" -- No one watched, but Todd and Andrea were interested. "CODA" *WINNER* -- Todd and Andrea agree that this was a worthy choice. "Don't Look Up" -- Lara and I disliked this movie very much. Andrea ended up falling asleep. "Drive My Car" -- No one watched, but Andrea heard from the one person she knew who had seen this film that it was a bit on the slow side. Apparently, they aren't driving that car fast. "Dune" -- Todd and Andrea LOVED this film. Both agree that I will probably not like it, but my love for Timothy Chalamet may win over. "King Richard" -- Todd and Lara loved this movie, and Lara and I will also watch it FOR SURE. "Licorice Pizza" -- No one has watched this, nor does anyone understand what it's about. I should also disclose that no one plans on watching this unless one of you tells us we should. "Nightmare Alley" -- Todd watched it and said we would not like it. But he did have it as an "I'll allow it" for Best Picture. That says a lot. "The Power of the Dog" -- Andrea watched it and said she would never watch it again. She understands why it was nominated, though. "West Side Story" -- We all watched it and thought it was terrific! Especially the non-depressing parts. Note: Also on our "to watch" list is: "Encanto" and "Free Guy." SHOW NOTES: Subscribe to Podcast: iTunes or Android Follow Me: Facebook and Instagram, and Twitter
