"We always put minorities to the front." The Mala Junta cofounder and affiliate talk about prioritising femme queer ravers, the value of local party crews and not taking themselves too seriously. Friends and colleagues Hyperaktivist and Yazzus share one important value: putting marginalised folks to the front. The Venezuelan and Ghana-via-London artists, respectively, met in Berlin not long after Yazzus went to the Berlin-based Mala Junta party, a collective co-founded by Hyperaktivist, DJ Tool and door selector Nyaam Hassany. Yazzus was asked to be a party resident and has collaborated with the crew extensively, playing their shows and helping curate lineups ever since. In this RA Exchange with Berlin DJ and journalist Juba, the two talk about their shared passion for better representation on party lineups and what authentic diversity means in a climate that often privileges checking boxes and meeting quotas. They also talk about their solo endeavours, their trajectories into dance music and their shared passion for nurturing the growth of homegrown parties and scenes. "I've always been fascinated with extreme art." The Fast Forward member discusses the Copenhagen techno sound, eroticism and his proclivity for noise and black metal. Martin Schacke has been leading the charge on developing the psytrance-inspired techno sound that's dominated clubs over the last couple of years. He's also known for making provocative, catchy club tunes like "Kisloty People"—his breakout single from 2019—and Apocalyptic Decadence, an LP that came out on Instruments of Discipline last year (which made Resident Advisor's "The Best Albums of 2022" list). He's joined by a rank of DJs from Copenhagen like Sugar and DJ Tool who are popularizing this fun and fast counterpoint to heads-down dance music, and which Schacke describes as originating from a desire to start a scene distinct from the Berghain sound. Interestingly, Schacke is also an artist of many trades. He's heavily involved with noise, industrial and black metal music, and he discusses how these more experimental forms have inspired his releases for the dance floor. "I've taken a lot of these ways of working with aesthetic opposites and absurdities from noise music, where it's normal to use extreme subject matter and go into dark territory and fun territory," he said. "I think those can really intertwine." Having grown up in a house where collecting music was the norm, Swedish-born DJ Philippa Pacho has carried this through to her adult life. As a result, the Berlin-based artist is a well-tuned and confident selector who knows how to capture an audience in any given situation. It all began with her father's hobby of collecting jazz, blues and folk records. As a teenager, Philippa built her own music library before attending her first rave, and later discovering the underworld of dance music and club culture. As standard in a community of electronic music heads, Philippa made friends from the scene in Stockholm and in 2010, formed a collective with a handful of girlfriends. Together, the women curated their night every Thursday at 2:35:1; an art gallery and club located in the city centre. It was here that Philippa delved into DJing headfirst, taking advantage of the creative freedom on offer and learning the skills of mixing and working the dancefloor until dawn. With two years of DJing under her belt, by this time she earned a residency at the Stockholm-based club Under Bron — where she remains the longest-running resident since the space opened in 2010 — Philippa's early sound leant towards hypnotic techno, but she has since graduated to a include myriad of bouncy and tripped-out rhythms within the genre. Playing at forest raves on the outskirts of Stockholm and upending abandoned warehouses in the city — balanced between Under Bron bookings — these raw experiences infiltrated Philippa's sound down to the last cadence, resulting in her groove-heavy collection and quick-fire blending. Making the move to Berlin in 2014 allowed Philippa to flourish and finesse her sound. Known today for merging contemporary and old-school techno while dipping into different tempos and sub-genres, Philippa has played for Ellen Allien's We Are Not Alone series, Synoid parties and DJ Tool, D.Dan and Hyperaktivist's event, Mala Junta. Such a diverse range of bookings has allowed her to reveal other dimensions to her sound, and joining MESS line-ups — a collective that celebrates diversity and supporting DIY club culture worldwide — has recently contributed to the growth of Philippa's profile. A recent chapter for Philippa sees her founding the label ‘positivesource' together with Blue Hour. The pair release various artist EPs from artists including Oprofessionell, Newa, Sugar, Alan Backdrop, Rove Ranger, Lady Starlight, LDS, Blue Hour himself and many more. With the return of nightlife, Philippa's focus remains crisp and clear; her goal is to get you to move your whole body in expressive ways. She sees herself as a dancer first and foremost and has that always in mind when she performs. "A good DJ set is like a candy bag. Venezuelan born Berlin based, Hyperaktivist has been shaking the scene in and outside Berlin, with her characteristically energetic sets, unleashing a new wave of faster psychedelic-tinged trance, tribal techno and old school house pulsations, often with a cheeky nod to the 90's rave era. She started working for the development of club culture in her native Venezuela since an early age. There, she co-founded SOLO, the first club dedicated exclusively to electronic music in her hometown. After finishing a degree in mass media and journalism, she relocated in Berlin where she completed a diploma in sound engineering at the studios of the infamous Funk Haus. In Berlin, she continues her work for the development of club culture as the architect of not one but two vital community-focused club nights. Her first called Mess, Mindful Electronic Sonic Selections where she plays the role of organiser, resident and curato. Mess, it's a forward thinking club night with a focus on women, queer and transgender artist from diverse cultural backgrounds, dedicated to the celebration of diversity Mess supports DIY club culture by working out different collaborations with like minded collectives around the world. Mess happens at Ohm, the more experimental club from Tresor. With Mess, Hyperaktivist has created a unique event in Berlin, attracting loads of attention for it's contribution in pushing the conversation about diversity in the city's musical landscape becoming an important platform for more underrepresented communities to show their force. Her second project is named: Mala Junta. Hyperaktivist, co-founded this club night alongside Dj Tool. They both curate, organise and are residents of the party, and since 2019 they have welcomed D.dan as their third and newest resident. Mala Junta is considered one of Berlin's fiercest underground queer-techno parties, with a focus on inclusivity, Mala Junta approaches the faster, groovier edges of dance music with an open mind and a relentless spirit. Hyperaktivist have directly influenced a shift in the scene, not only through introducing her hypnotising yet euphoric fresh sounds, but also by constantly advocating political values of equality & diversity at the forefront of her projects. Since being selected as one of the Shape Platform for innovative music artists in 2016, she has been touring around the world. It was also at the Shoom Club where Pete met Terry Farley and together with Andy Weatherall, collaborated in his first co-production. The track, 'Raise' by Bocca Juniors, was released on the newly formed Boys Own Records label.Heller and Farley continued to work together remixing and producing for the likes of The Farm and Primal Scream. When the deal with London Records ended, both were instrumental in the formation of the independent Junior Boys Own label and continued to produce their own material under pseudonyms such as Fire Island, Roach Motel and Heller and Farley Project.------------------------------------------------------------------------------the music------------------------------------------------------------------------------Pete's impact on the world of dance music has been staggering.
