Don Cooper was referred to me by a mutual friend, Carolyn Strauss, in my search for a chapter speaker who would bring an innovative approach to sales training.  He brought his most popular workshop, The Myth of Price, and got great reviews from every attendee.  And - thankfully for our listeners, he made time to come by The LoCo Experience studios and share some of his principles for creative thinking about sales, and ultimately to break some of the psychological barriers for sales professionals - and clients - to get to win-win-win and YES!  Don's sales career began in middle school, when he started buying candy in bulk and selling to kids - and sometimes teachers or admin staff - but not competing with the brands the band or cheer squad were selling for fundraisers.  He was a socially awkward kid, and endured an abusive and isolating relationship with his mother for much of his childhood.  Eventually finding success and social skills through speech and debate, at one point Don imagined a life in conservative politics.  After growing disenchanted with politics, however, Don built his sales skills and programs, and came to Colorado as part of the Gorilla Group in the early 2000's.  When he was laid off during the post 9/11 dip, Don launched his independent sales training business in 2001 and hasn't looked back.  Don is the Sales Heretic - and a heretic in general he would say.  He's an eccentric genius - my favorite kind - and he shares very abundantly from his sales and training toolkit in this conversation.  So please enjoy getting to know and learn from the Sales Heretic, Don Cooper.  The LoCo Experience Podcast is sponsored by: Logistics Co-op | https://logisticscoop.com/

Update College Recruiting - expanded number of scholarships Intro - Larry Monroe Monroe was chosen by the Sox in the first round of the 1974 Major League Baseball draft with the eighth overall selection. After going 11-14 with a 2.91 ERA for the Knoxville Sox in 1976, he earned a late-season call-up to Chicago. He made his big league debut on August 23 against the Detroit Tigers, throwing two scoreless, hitless innings of relief. After his playing days, Monroe worked for the White Sox in various capacities. When Adrian Garrett replaced Vern Law as manager of the Denver Zephyrs in 1984, Monroe was brought in to become pitching coach. He was vice president of scouting and minor league operations from 1990 to 1994 and vice president of free agent and major league scouting until 2000. Monroe was an integral part of the advanced scouting team, which aided the Chicago White Sox in winning the 2005 World Series. More recently, he was an advisor to the baseball department through 2020. Monroe runs the personal pitching training business, Monroe Pitching, geared to young men looking to improve their talents. Monroe is the author of Best-Kept Secrets of Major League Pitching. Scouting story - JC left-handed pitchers in Florida. The mind of a scout. Topics Baseball has been thought of as a physical, mental, and emotional development game. Where have you seen the most changes in the areas of pitching development both positive and negative? TJ epidemic (tip of the iceberg). your thoughts and where do you see the most damage being done in your day-to-day operations? Contributing factors: Improper rest (weekly, monthly, annually), throwing year-round. Max effort philosophy in throwing and performance Pitch counts are adhered to in MILB and MLB but not in privatized amateur baseball Travel and Showcase baseball. Ex. 6 games on a weekend, where else does this happen? Quick story……. Jim Your thoughts on overall pitching development. Where do you place the importance in how you teach and coach? Any thoughts on how we reverse this injury trend? What can we learn from successful pitchers in the past (ex. Mark Buerhle) Any stories on the “Kiddie Core”, Dotson, Burns, Trout, Hoyt, and Wortham and how the White Sox were able to develop quality young starting pitching? In your scouting years (various roles) what were the things you looked for in a young pitcher? Any stories that show this thought process? One of my colleagues often quotes or shares talks given by Leo Mazzone and Don Cooper. Any personal insight on how the White Sox with Don Cooper was successful in developing quality pitchers? Mike Porzio story - how a different voice can alter a player's perception. How winter ball was used as an aid in development. Manageable workload was a part of development, now it appears MILB is merely the safety squad, trying to keep pitchers healthy by not throwing. MLB developed the Fall League for top prospects ( I believe spearheaded by Roland Hemond), bit now the top pitchers are usually not allowed to throw due to workload concerns. There is a great misconception that sales is about getting what you want. The truth is, sales is about helping people get what they want; in return, they help you get what you want. I have the amazing Don Cooper joining me on the show in this episode. Don will be helping us sharpen our sales skills to move to the next level in our business. Don Has been in sales for a long time and has some amazing tips and steps that can come in handy in our lives.  Listen in and learn. Is mindset essential in sales? According to Don Cooper, mindset is more important than skill. When it comes to sales, if you have the right mindset, you will always be in a position to win your prospects. Confidence during meetings/presentations Confidence is one thing that you can never fake because people will always know you are not confident. Another thing is that confidence is contagious. If you are meeting with a prospect and you are confident in yourself, your business, and your product, then the prospect will be equally confident in you. How to connect with a prospect If you want to have a great connection with your prospect, you need to learn how to ask the right questions, which will lead you to connect with them at an emotional point. The fact is, your prospects won't buy from you unless you can connect emotionally. Every purchase is an emotional decision. Timestamps: [00:39] Getting to know Don Cooper [04:26] Don's views when it comes to mindset and sales [09:42] Steps to follow before going out to sell a product [11:12] Pre-presentation tips [13:19] The essence of confidence [15:28] Five steps on how to deal with objections [20:48] How to connect better with a prospect [26:53] Don's inner superpower Quotes: “Sales is about helping other people get what they want. And if you help them, they will help you.” “I teach people that you've got to love your product, company, and customer. You have to love all three of those things to really be effective in sales.” “Our brains are so incredibly complex and so powerful, and we understand so little about how they work.” “If you're giving yourself constant good feedback, ‘That I am good, and I excel at what I do, and I'm a good person, and this is going to work' Then nothing can stop you. Because that mindset will keep propelling you forward against any obstacle.” “Mindset is more important than the skill set. Because you can be skilled, but if your mindsets are not there, your skills don't matter a whole lot. If you've got the right mindset, you can find the skills.” “People can sense when you're not confident. And if you're not confident in yourself, then they're not going to be confident in you.” “Emotion is what triggers all action. Every single purchase is an emotional decision.” “Sales must be ethical. You must always be working with your prospects' best interest at heart, and you should always tell the truth.” Connect with Don Cooper: Website: https://www.doncooper.com/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/salesheretic    If you enjoy the content that we're bringing to you, then please feel free to drop us a review on the platform you're listening to us through. :)

Ryan has a different angle on the interview process for the former Cardinals' manager, while Josh is going to flip the table if this manager role goes to the 76 year old has-been. Do you think Don Cooper will get another job somewhere? Football was the next discussion, as the Titans won and are still playing victum after beating the Buffalo Bills, who should be worried about their defense because it's been bad. We got into COVID19 talk again because one of us thinks that enough is enough in the football community. How many schedule changes, positive tests, and limbo acts will we have until they admit this was a bad idea? Le'Veon Bell is free to talk to teams and we both hope the Bears are at the front of the line. However, Josh had to stick up for David Montgomery because his slander will not be welcome here. Oh, and the Jets suck. MLB Postseason: While the discussion was a bit confusing, the consensus still holds that the Rays are it in the AL but we still disagree after the Dodgers dismantled the Braves 15-3 in Game 3. We then ended the show with a candy draft. Both of us selected a candy that we think is most-superior and in the end, you can decide who had the better candy squad! Leave a voicemail, get entered to win a jersey: 815-714-9044 On this episode, one-half of the podcast gets a new look with can be seen on Twitter. We flipped the show around for tonight's edition. Starting with the Chicago White Sox parting ways with not only Ricky Renteria but Don Cooper. The page has officially turned on the south side and it's time to find someone who can lead this team in the playoffs. We discussed all about the Sox moving forward and how the optimism is higher every day. Gears changed as we brought up the Chicago Blackhawks. Listen, understandably so, the glory days are behind this franchise, but there's no sense of direction and Stan Bowman continues to dumpster dive in order to fill this roster. Admit it, it's over. The fact that Jonathan Toews and the rest of the core didn't get informed as to what was going on is a joke. Also, Jeremy Colliton behind the bench helps nothing and hurts everything. We moved on to talk about the NFLs biggest headlines from Week 5. Dak Prescott's injury was terrible. Leave Tony Dungy alone, man. Yes, he phrased what he said the wrong way, but understand what he meant. The Cleveland Browns are officially good. Are the Kansas City Chiefs in trouble? Are they frauds? Russell Wilson has to be the early favorite for the league's MVP, right? There are som names that give him a run for his money. The show wrapped up with MLB Postseason talk with a little bit of Rays-Astros talk and Dodgers-Braves. Look, it's too early in the NLCS, but the Rays series is good and Tampa Bay looks to create a stranglehold in Game 3. Today on Chicago Sports HQ chatter Cole and I dive right into what is going on with the White Sox and the current situation regarding the firing of Don Cooper and Rick Renteria. Was it the right choice for the White Sox to let him go or was it a premature firing like his time on the North Side. The Bears continue to win ugly, but a win is a win as they improved to 4-1 on the season. We also look at the NFL landscape and discuss some of the happenings going on. Both NHL and NBA are in off season mode so it's time to look at some of the changes being made across the board on both rosters. With just three weeks left of the MLS season, the Chicago Fire are in full playoff mode as they continue to pick up much needed wins and improve their stock in the playoff picture.

We talk about how the Indians might look at a few other starters to move this year if they are looking to get max value in deals. We talk about my concerns for this shortened season and why for a contender they have more question marks than most and really only two or three sure things. We spend a lot of time on players who have opted out, and how this will be a common theme this year. Players can opt out any time, and according to Joel Sherman many are likely to do it as the season progresses. A player could at any point and time after hitting service time requirements or if their team is way out of it decide to end their season early. We focus in on Michael Kopech due to issues with what Don Cooper said in regards to the young arm and also just due to the fact his opt out likely has the greatest effect on the Indians of any player so.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Rock AutoAmazing selection.
