The MLB Winter Meetings are underway and the Chicago White Sox need to be busy. The White Sox have been active in the month of December in recent years. The organization has "won the offseason" a few times since 2016 but has produced zero ALCS or World Series appearances from the destinction. Will the Sox try to get creative via the trade or will they make a splash to fill one of their many voids? Michael Conforto's name keeps popping up. Jacob deGrom's new deal with the Texas Rangers should make a White Sox fan blush. The Sox have never spent anywhere near what deGrom got from Texas. Throwing money at problems is not the South Side way. Nickel and dining our way through the off-season is more of the approach we as Sox fans are used to. The Nomar Mazara, Edwin Encarnacion, Ivan Nova type deals is more our speed. The rumor season is also underway. Could the Kansas City Royals really trade Salvy Perez to the Sox and could Lucas Giolito be on his way to Tampa for Brandon Lowe? The Winter Meetings... a time of hope, wonder and sometimes irrational thinking.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Detroit Tigers 4, San Diego Padres 3 Colorado Rockies 6, Chicago White Sox 5 Cubs were off Tigers 4, Padres 3 – Reyes’ 2-out, 2-run double in 9th rallies Tigers over Padres Victor Reyes hit a two-out, two-run double in the ninth inning to rally the Detroit Tigers over the San Diego Padres 4-3. The Padres led 3-2 going into the ninth and brought on closer Taylor Rogers, who gave up a one-run lead in the ninth on Tuesday night in a game San Diego eventually won in the 10th. This time, Jeimer Canderlario led off with a double before Rogers retired the next two batters. Jonathan Schoop followed with a dribbler down the third-base line for a single that put runners at the corners. Reyes then hit a drive over the head of right fielder Nomar Mazara to win it. Mazara got close to the wall chasing the ball and let the carom bounce past him as both runners scored easily. Rockies 6, White Sox 5 – Díaz, Rockies rally off Graveman in 9th, stun White Sox 6-5 Elias Díaz hit a two-run single off Kendall Graveman in the ninth inning, and the Colorado Rockies overcame the loss of starting pitcher Antonio Senzatela to beat the Chicago White Sox 6-5. Senzatela, making his second start since returning from a shoulder injury, led 3-2 in the seventh when Leury García hit a comebacker off the pitcher’s left shin that rolled away for a single. After Lucas Gilbreath blew the lead, Graveman walked Colorado’s first three batters in the ninth. Robert Stephenson pitched a perfect ninth. Today Detroit (Alexander 2-3) at Toronto (Kikuchi 3-5), 7:07 p.m.                 WSJM/WCSY 6:45 Chicago Cubs (Steele 4-6) at San Francisco (Wood 6-8), 9:45 p.m. White Sox are off NFL – Lions optimistic going into second season under Campbell The Detroit Lions are optimistic that the needs they addressed in the offseason will make the second year under coach Dan Campbell much better than the first in 2021 when they won just three games. In the offseason, the Lions made a conscious effort to improve their passing game. By signing wide receiver DJ Chark in free agency and using the 12th overall pick in the draft on Alabama wideout Jameson Williams — who starts camp on the non-football injury list — Detroit is hoping to stretch defenses. Defensively, the Lions drafted Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchison with the second overall pick and re-signed Charles Harris after a 7 1/2-sack season in an effort to improve a pass rush that ranked 30th in sacks. NFL – Quinn says he’s on board as rebuilding Bears begin practices Chicago Bears defensive end Robert Quinn joined the rest of the team on the practice field for the first time under new coach Matt Eberflus after missing all offseason voluntary and mandatory work. Quinn says he doesn’t expect or want to be traded, as the rumors suggested all offseason. This doesn’t mean the Bears are without controversy at the start of training camp. Linebacker Roquan Smith wants a new contract and was placed on the physically unable to perform list. Smith was at practice, just not taking part. Eberflus doesn’t want to reveal the injury that landed Smith on the PUP list, assuming there is one. Smith was at all the offseason practices and did not have an injury then. NFL – NFL finance group supports Broncos sale to Walmart heir The NFL finance committee is unanimously recommending the league owners approve the proposed $4.65 billion sale of the Denver Broncos to the heir of the Walmart fortune. Team owners will gather Aug. 9 to vote on the sale. Twenty-four yes votes are needed among the 32 teams to approve the sale which is the largest for a sports team anywhere in the world. The ownership group led by former Walmart chairman Rob Walton won the bidding for the team that’s been run by the Pat Bowlen Trust for several years. NCAAFB – Big Ten – Old-guy quarterbacks could give Big Ten different look Sean Clifford and Tanner Morgan first met on a seventh-grade football field. They’re final matchup could come Oct. 22 when Minnesota visits Penn State. They may be the two oldest quarterbacks in the Big Ten. The 24-year-old Clifford and 23-year-old Morgan are still trying to lead Penn State and Minnesota to division titles. But they are part of a growing trend among conference teams. At least nine conference schools are expected to open the season with the same quarterbacks that finished last season. NCAAFB – C-USA’s state of transition: 6 of 11 schools in final year Conference USA is in a state of transition, with six of its 11 football teams going into their last seasons in the league. Western Kentucky coach Tyson Helton was a freshman quarterback when Houston won the first C-USA football title in 1996. He’s now going into his fourth season with the Hilltoppers, who are one of five teams that will be staying. He says the conference has recreated itself many times and become stronger every time. Defending champion and preseason favorite UTSA is among six schools leaving next summer for the American Athletic Conference. WNBA – In rare contact, US offers Russia deal for Griner, Whelan The Biden administration has offered a deal to Russia aimed at bringing home WNBA star Brittney Griner and another jailed American, Paul Whelan. That’s according to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who also revealed Wednesday that he has asked to speak with his Kremlin counterpart for the first time in months. The statement marked the first time the U.S. government has publicly revealed any concrete action it has taken to secure the release of Griner. He did not offer details on the proposed deal outlined to the Russians, though a person familiar with the matter said the U.S. has offered to trade convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout for Whelan and Griner. WNBA’s Griner tells drug trial: ‘My career is my whole life’ WNBA star Brittney Griner testified at her drug possession trial in Russia that an interpreter translated only a fraction of what was said during questioning when she was detained at Moscow’s airport in February and officials told her to sign documents without giving an explanation. The testimony by Griner came on the same day that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Washington has offered a deal to Russia aimed at bringing home the WNBA star and another jailed American, Paul Whelan. Griner has been detained since mid-February after police said they found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage. She has pleaded guilty to the charges. Olympics – US sprint great Allyson Felix joins IOC athletes’ commission American sprint great Allyson Felix and a refugee cyclist originally from Afghanistan have joined the International Olympic Committee’s athletes’ commission. Felix is a seven-time Olympic champion. She joins after winning her 14th career world championship title last week. Cyclist Masomah Ali Zada was born in Afghanistan and competed in the women’s cycling time trial on the IOC’s refugee Olympic team last year in Tokyo. The other two new members are two-time Olympic triathlon champion Alistair Brownlee of Britain and Oluseyi Smith of Canada. Olympics – Germany offers money to families of Olympic attack victims The German government has indicated it’s willing to pay further compensation to the families of 11 Israeli athletes killed at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich by a Palestinian group. Relatives of the athletes, however, call the proposed amount “insulting.” The families have long criticized how German authorities handled the attack and its aftermath. Demands for further compensation have threatened to overshadow a planned memorial event for the 50th anniversary of the massacre. Germany’s Interior Ministry said it was holding talks with the relatives and that the “serious consequences for the surviving dependents" should be reassessed. It was not clear how much money was being offered to the families. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks more about the fallout from Wednesday's non-tender deadline. Some notable non-tenders around the game were David Dahl, Archie Bradley, Kyle Schwarber, Eddie Rosario, Nomar Mazara, Carlos Rodón, and Matt Wisler. Among them, Dahl was probably the most surprising, and he actually fits one of the Giants' biggest needs. He's a young, left-handed-hitting outfielder who's capable of playing center. He has impressive tools, including power, speed, and an ability to play solid defense. He was a former first-round draft pick by the Rockies. The Giants will almost certainly be interested in signing Dahl, among with several other players who were non-tendered on Wednesday. The Winter Meetings kick off next week, in virtual fashion, and that may hopefully kickstart what has been a slow offseason around the league to date.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. The preseason countdown continues with the Chicago White Sox at No. 8. They won just 72 games last season but there may not have been a team more aggressive about improving their roster in the offseason.Adding Yasmani Grandal, Nomar Mazara, and Edwin Encarnacion adds some pop to a lineup that already had solid veterans Jose Abreu and Tim Anderson, along with rising stars Yoan Moncada and Eloy Jimenez. Add in a couple of talented rookies, Luis Robert and Nick Madrigal, and the White Sox lineup is that of a contender. The question will be whether the pitching staff can do its part. Lucas Giolito has emerged as the ace and the White Sox added veteran left-handers Dallas Keuchel and Gio Gonzalez. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
