They say it's tough to beat a team twice in a season, and the La Vega Pirates will test that theory as they face off with West Orange-Stark on Friday in Magnolia. We've talked about the Pirates being a sleeper team for Jerryworld — what is it about the Pirates that suggests they could knock off the Mustangs this time?We still have seven teams alive in the playoffs in Class 2A: Hamilton, Axtell, Crawford, Marlin, Bremond, Mart and Wortham. We know that one guy can make a lot of difference on a 2A team. So who would you say is the top difference maker among our seven local 2A teams playing this week? One of the ways we judge how good a game might be is whether it was easy for us to pick it in our weekly predictions, or whether it was a tough call. So with that in mind, what was the hardest game to pick this week and why? It's driving-long-distances-to-cover-sports season, but what's on the car stereo as you spend hours in the car each week? What's your go-to road trip song?----- Music: https://purple-planet.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Update College Recruiting - expanded number of scholarships Intro - Larry Monroe Monroe was chosen by the Sox in the first round of the 1974 Major League Baseball draft with the eighth overall selection. After going 11-14 with a 2.91 ERA for the Knoxville Sox in 1976, he earned a late-season call-up to Chicago. He made his big league debut on August 23 against the Detroit Tigers, throwing two scoreless, hitless innings of relief. After his playing days, Monroe worked for the White Sox in various capacities. When Adrian Garrett replaced Vern Law as manager of the Denver Zephyrs in 1984, Monroe was brought in to become pitching coach. He was vice president of scouting and minor league operations from 1990 to 1994 and vice president of free agent and major league scouting until 2000. Monroe was an integral part of the advanced scouting team, which aided the Chicago White Sox in winning the 2005 World Series. More recently, he was an advisor to the baseball department through 2020. Monroe runs the personal pitching training business, Monroe Pitching, geared to young men looking to improve their talents. Monroe is the author of Best-Kept Secrets of Major League Pitching. Scouting story - JC left-handed pitchers in Florida. The mind of a scout. Topics Baseball has been thought of as a physical, mental, and emotional development game. Where have you seen the most changes in the areas of pitching development both positive and negative? TJ epidemic (tip of the iceberg). your thoughts and where do you see the most damage being done in your day-to-day operations? Contributing factors: Improper rest (weekly, monthly, annually), throwing year-round. Max effort philosophy in throwing and performance Pitch counts are adhered to in MILB and MLB but not in privatized amateur baseball Travel and Showcase baseball. Ex. 6 games on a weekend, where else does this happen? Quick story……. Jim Your thoughts on overall pitching development. Where do you place the importance in how you teach and coach? Any thoughts on how we reverse this injury trend? What can we learn from successful pitchers in the past (ex. Mark Buerhle) Any stories on the “Kiddie Core”, Dotson, Burns, Trout, Hoyt, and Wortham and how the White Sox were able to develop quality young starting pitching? In your scouting years (various roles) what were the things you looked for in a young pitcher? Any stories that show this thought process? One of my colleagues often quotes or shares talks given by Leo Mazzone and Don Cooper. Any personal insight on how the White Sox with Don Cooper was successful in developing quality pitchers? Mike Porzio story - how a different voice can alter a player's perception. How winter ball was used as an aid in development. Manageable workload was a part of development, now it appears MILB is merely the safety squad, trying to keep pitchers healthy by not throwing. MLB developed the Fall League for top prospects ( I believe spearheaded by Roland Hemond), bit now the top pitchers are usually not allowed to throw due to workload concerns. Any you would like to speak about please include.

The responsibility of addressing unacceptable behavior by spectators now falls under game administration. Another change allows the use of a one-way communication device between a coach in the dugout and the team's catcher for calling pitches, while prohibiting communication with other players on defense or while batting. Additionally, the use of non-electronic wristbands and pitchers' cards with specific game information has been approved, with guidelines for their appearance. These changes aim to balance the game, enhance pace, and responsibly incorporate technology.   We'll have Final thoughts coming up after this……     Break: Ted's - Henssler 60 Signoff- Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. Anxiety. Not only do we all deal with it, but it can take on many different forms. For example there's the new anxiety that comes from the Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO). The term refers to the sometimes energizing, sometimes terrifying anxiety that you are missing out on something absolutely amazing. It could be a party, a new movie, a special relationship, or a delicious romantic dinner; something awesome is happening and you are not a part of it. FOMO is an age-old problem that has exploded culturally thanks to real-time updates on social media. In the New York Times, Jenna Wortham wrote about a friend who works in advertising who told her that she was feeling fine about her life--until she opened her social media account. The friend said, "Then I'm thinking, I am 28, with three roommates, and oh, it looks like they have a precious baby and a mortgage. And then I wanted to die." Wortham claims that social media updates can make our simple everyday pleasures pale in comparison with the fun things we could or should be doing. Anxiety can pop up in the strangest of ways! Another area where anxiety is increasing rapidly is with Generation Z (people born since the late 1990's). Researcher Joseph E. Davis claims that we can trace some of the anxiety to what he calls "absurdly ambitious" goals for academics, sports, or their future career. Davis points to a 2019 survey that asked 3,000 American adolescents, most age 14-17, about their aspirations for adulthood. How important, for instance, was it to them to become, "powerful and influential" as an adult? 21% indicated "absolutely essential," and another 27% as "very important." (Source: Joseph E. Davis, "The Deeper Roots of Youth Anxiety" Institute for Family Studies) What these current examples of anxiety reveal is that much of our anxiety isn't from outside sources, it's literally self perceived or self generated. We don't think we measure up to the identity we've created for ourselves, and most importantly, we are aware of the flaws or brokenness we struggle with everyday. No one knows our flaws more then we do, we literally see them everyday in the mirror. Sometimes we literally hate ourselves because of all our perceived or real shortcomings.  This kind of anxiety is very real, at it happens even to Christians. So what are we to do when this happens in our lives? One word: Remember. Remember what God says about you. Remember where your identity comes from. Most importantly, remember where your strength comes from. Here is how the apostle Paul states it:  "But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." ~2 Corinthians 12:9-10 To learn more about how God provides us with the resources to deal with our anxiety make sure and to part two of Anxious for Nothing.

His works prioritize displays of personal innocence and acts of kindness within surreal landscapes and elaborate draped environments that reimagine the social boundaries imposed on male interactions, platonic and otherwise. The use of gestural kindnesses between real and imagined characters are inspired by his various experiences growing as a black boy in Baltimore, MD and his later experiences navigating the world as a black queer man. Memory subconsciously roots itself in the use of familiar household materials & fabrics, while symbolically he arranges it. Looking to buoy his new realities in a permanent real space, Morris posits his reimagined societies as a prehistory to futures that are impossible to imagine. Ike Reighard, senior pastor of Piedmont Church and CEO of MUST Ministries, was named the Marietta Citizen of the Year Thursday by the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. Reighard was surprised with the honor at the chamber's Marietta council luncheon following Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin's State of the City address. As Tumlin announced Reighard as the Citizen of the Year, the pastor shook his head in disbelief. Tumlin cited the famous New Testament verse, Matthew 25:35 — “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,” — to describe Reighard's service to the community. Reighard joined MUST Ministries in 2011. The organization provides assistance to families and individuals in need, from food drives and fundraisers to the Hope House Emergency Shelter, which sleeps 136 residents. After receiving a standing ovation, Reighard made his way to the front of the room and accepted the award from Tumlin and Andy Gaines, the 2022 Marietta Area Council director. Two former Amazon employees who worked at an Amazon warehouse in Smyrna pleaded guilty after being accused of stealing nearly $10 million from the company, federal prosecutors announced Thursday. The defendants stole the funds while employed at the company in managerial and loss prevention roles, prosecutors said, and spent it on real estate, sports cars and jewelry. Ryan K. Buchanan, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, said that Kayricka Wortham of Atlanta and Demetrius Hines of Smyrna used their positions at the e-commerce and tech giant to submit more than $10 million in fictitious invoices for fake vendors, leading the company to pay approximately $9.4 million to Wortham, Hines and co-conspirators. As part of their sentencing, Wortham and Hines will forfeit cash and assets purchased with the stolen funds, prosecutors said. For Wortham, that includes more than $2.7 million, a Smyrna residence (purchased for more than $900,000), a 2019 Lamborghini Urus, a 2021 Dodge Durango, a 2022 Tesla Model X, a 2018 Porsche Panamera and a Kawasaki ZX636 motorcycle. Hines will forfeit more than $600,000, along with a 2022 Suzuki GSX1300 Motorcycle, a 2013 Ford Shelby Mustang, a 2021 Ford F-150 Black Widow, a Rolex Day-Date watch, a diamond bracelet and a diamond necklace. Wortham, 31, also known as Kayricka Dupree or Kayricka Young, was the leader of the scheme and worked as an operations manager at Amazon from August 2020 to March 2022 at the Smyrna warehouse, according to prosecutors. A Marietta man was sentenced to life in prison for aggravated sodomy, the Cobb County District Attorney's office announced Wednesday. Travis Leonard Hudson, 50, was sentenced by Cobb Superior Court Judge Mary Staley Clark Monday after he was found guilty by a jury on November 18, according to a news release from the DA's office. Prosecutors said Hudson's trial began Nov. 14, and that he was tried for sexually assaulting a female acquaintance on the night of March 12, 2021. The woman was reportedly visiting Hudson at his apartment and woke up to him assaulting her. Following an investigation by the Cobb County Police Department's Crimes Against Persons Unit, Hudson was arrested in June of last year. During the trial, Assistant District Attorney Sarah Hilleren presented the testimony of law enforcement, the victim, medical professionals and other evidence, the release said.   An Acworth woman and alleged gang member previously convicted for her involvement in the murder of a 17-year-old in Bartow County has been sentenced to more than a decade in federal prison, federal prosecutors announced Wednesday. Jennifer Foutz, 30, received 12 years in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, after she pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting murder in aid of racketeering, and aiding and abetting the use of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence resulting in death, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia said. Gary Terrell Davis was sentenced this week for his role in the murder, the last of eight alleged members or associates of northwest Georgia's 135 Pirus gang accused in the murder. The lead defendant in the case, Maurice Antonio Kent, 32, of Cartersville, was found guilty of four felonies in May. On Aug. 24, Kent was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison to be followed by three years of supervised release. Others convicted in the case included Christopher Nwanjoku, 30, of Lawrenceville, Jamel Dupree Hughes, 27, of Atlanta, Cedric Sams, 29, of Cartersville, Michael Kent, 32, of Atlanta and DaSean Dorey, 29, of Decatur. Foutz, also known as “Rose,” had previously been arrested in connection to an unrelated shooting at an Acworth gas station in June 2017. Authorities said at the time she and Hughes encountered a member of another gang at the gas station. Hughes allegedly shot the member of the other gang multiple times before undercover police at the gas station working an unrelated case saw the shooting, and proceeded to pursue Foutz and Hughes, who attempted to flee in their car.   For the Marietta flag football team, it follows a simple premise. If the other team doesn't score, it can't win.  That was the case again Thursday night when the Blue Devils defeated North Gwinnett 13-0 in the quarterfinals of the Class 7A state playoffs. With the win, Marietta moves on to play Blessed Trinity in a rematch of last year's state semifinals, a game the Blue Devils won 26-0.  For the Blue Devils, it was their eighth shutout of the season and third straight to open the playoffs. The defense was so dominant it allowed only two first downs over the first 39 minutes of the 40 minute game, and only two plays of more than five yards during that stretch. With 3:53 left to play, North Gwinnett had one last chance to try to work its way downfield to try and tie the game, instead it went backwards. A run on first down lost three yards, a botched pitch on a reverse lost seven yards and two incomplete passes gave the ball back to Marietta at the Bulldogs' 5-yard line. It took only one play for Hennessey to find Gabi O'Neill with a short touchdown pass to put the game away.  Monday's semifinal matchup will be played at the Atlanta Falcons training facility in Flowery Branch. It is the first time the final four will be played there.   The Marietta Police Department and its retiree association honored women who have worked on the force in a ceremony at City Hall on Thursday. Jack Shields, a retired sergeant who worked for the MPD for 33 years and now organizes the department's retiree club, had the idea for the ceremony when he heard Susan Fuder would be in town for the regular MPD retiree lunch. Fuder, now in her 70s, became Marietta's first woman police officer in 1972. She was an officer for 10 years, during which she worked on patrol and in crime prevention. Shields said he figured it would be a good opportunity to recognize all women police officers. He and Marietta Chief Marty Ferrell presented Fuder with a plaque for her service. Fuder said when she applied to be an officer, the police chief at the time asked if she was sure she didn't want to be a secretary. She was sure — and had wanted to be a police officer since childhood. When Fuder became an officer she said her first uniform was a skirt, despite her request for pants. That changed after she had to retrieve a stolen bicycle tossed in some brambles. Frank Fuder, her husband who coached football at Osborne and Campbell high schools, said at the time he was concerned about her safety, but knew she would do a first rate job. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews      -            -            -            -            -            The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.             Subscribe today, so you don't miss an episode! MDJOnline            Register Here for your essential digital news.            https://www.chattahoocheetech.edu/  https://cuofga.org/ https://www.esogrepair.com/ https://www.drakerealty.com/           Find additional episodes of the MDJ Podcast here.             This Podcast was produced and published for the Marietta Daily Journal and MDJ Online by BG Ad Group   For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com                        See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Providence Journal writes, “This year's Unraveled is a hidden gem of a book that reads like Craig Johnson's Longmire on steroids.” Wortham's new high octane contemporary western series from Kensington Publishing featuring Texas Ranger Sonny Hawke kicked off in 2017 with the publication of Hawke's Prey. The fourth Sonny Hawke thriller, Hawke's Fury, was published in June 2020. In 2019, the Western Writers Association presented Hawke's War with the Spur Award in the WWA Best Mass Market Paperback category. #cowboybooks #westerns #Goliath #reaviswortham #jeffcrawford #newrelease #podcast #authorsontheair

This week sit down with singer and songwriter Peter Sinclair! Peter is based out of Wortham, TX and he recently released his debut album, The Freestone Man. We get into his (relatively) short but impressive career so far - his songwriting, touring, and his relationship with country legend Billy Joe Shaver. Peter is a young and amazing talent who I'm sure we'll be hearing about a lot more in the future. linktr.ee/petersinclair

Audrey, propelled by her obedience to the spirit within her and her passion to advocate for freedom, steps into a topic not talked about enough among believers. In this episode, she boldly shares her struggle with sexual immorality and temptation, one that left her enslaved to sin, held back by painful bondage, and weighed down by intense guilt, fear, and shame. If this is your story, be encouraged! This episode is a call to step out of darkness into glorious light, an invitation to take your seat at the Fathers table, and a powerful declaration that the the sin and the enemy do not have the final say. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free, our God is victorious, He calls us by name, and we are His. "Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold." 2 Corinthians 3:12
