Minute Thirty-Seven: From Erik Telling His Assistants Where They Can Put It to Coulson Telling Steve About His Vintage SetJay Shepard from MCULocationScout.com and RetroZap.com joins us in this episode!In the thirty-seventh minute of The Avengers...Following our last minute's extended scene, we already have another one. We're in Loki's underground lab and there is more between Erik Selvig and Clint Barton, between Erik Selvig and Loki, and between Clint Barton and Loki. It all feels awkward, though. While there are some interesting points brought up in this extended scene – like Barton talking about why he might not have killed Fury and more about Selvig's connection to the Tesseract – it all plays awkwardly. We definitely prefer the version as it exists in the film, though this one is an interesting exploration of these characters. The scene plays a bit strangely anyway. They have an awful lot of people they've found in just a few days and seem to have accomplished an incredible amount of work on everything. Plus, we have the odd exit of the scene with a request for an eyeball. Just what is Clint up to? That, of course, brings us back to the bridge of the Helicarrier where we get a bit of the conversation about trading cards between Steve and Phil. It's pretty cute. All in all, there's certainly no shortage of content to discuss in this minute! You had been reluctant to accept Clint Barton's invitation to join his family's Christmas, not wanting to intrude. However, when Kate Bishop accepted, taking Lucky the Pizza Dog along, you decided to join them. Beats spending Christmas alone in your New York apartment. Gravel crunched beneath the tires as Clint pulled the car into the driveway of a homely farm. You all climb out as Clint unloads wrapped presents from the trunk. “Coming?” he asks you and Kate, balancing the gifts in his arms as he makes his way up the porch. “Yeah,” the younger archer answers for both of you as she grips Lucky's leash. “Hey, you sure this is okay?” Kate asks, voicing your concerns. “Oh, I'm telling you, they are very excited to meet you.” Clint's words were confirmed by the flurry of excitement greeting them at the door in the form of three Barton kids. Introductions were exchanged as everyone was ushered in and out of the cold. Warmth settles into your bones from the crackling fireplace in the living room, encouraging you to remove your winter coat. “Brought home a couple strays,” Clint says to a woman who could only be Mrs. Laura Barton as he gestures to you and Kate. She welcomes you both with a warm embrace. Her hair smelled of fresh gingerbread, her bright smile was infectious, and her hug was filled with motherly invitation. You felt yourself relax by the welcome into their home and family Christmas. Tea, coffee, and hot chocolate were passed around. The heat of your mug seeps to your fingers. You settle on the couch next to Kate and watch the kids open their presents. You smile at Nate's squeal of delight. You divide your attention between the gift unwrapping and the movies playing above the fireplace. Elf, Kate's favorite, played first followed by Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, a fitting film, you think. Warm and cozy, the aches and pains from the past week melted from your body. You sink back into the couch with a sigh of contentment. Yep, this definitely beats being alone on Christmas. I've already talked about each original Avenger, their strengths, their weaknesses, their struggles and how they have witnessed horrors and had overcome many odds; even when they were at odds with themselves. From the concepts of selfishness and selflessness with Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, emphasising what its like to have a massive ego with Thor and Hulk (with Bruce Banner struggling with this identity), and finally the sense of belonging with Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff. In the MCU, they were heroes, the Avengers. But here, with you and me, they are just people struggling along like the rest of us, and being the best versions of themselves. But have you ever wondered why there were six infinity stones and six original avengers? This is a theory in itself, and I thought it would be interesting to share it with you. Agent Barton shuts the door softly behind him while Agent Romanoff immediately starts building a fire. You drop Barton's jacket, which he had loaned you to fend off the rain, onto a chair. You sink into the couch, your sore and exhausted muscles groaning with relief. It had been a fight to get out of the lab. You were not trained for field combat, but thankfully agents Barton and Romanoff were the best of the best. Once you all got out, Agent Phil Coulson ordered you to lay low in a safe house. When you graduated from the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy as a scientist, you never thought you would make enemies along the way. That was for the field agents like Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff. Now some psycho who is... not human is after you for information only you possess. Director Fury assigned STRIKE Team: Delta to protect you until the threat is neutralized, but even they were not enough for this monster's wrath. So many agents and fellow scientists were killed trying to get to you. Too many. You push aside the memory of your coworker's bodies and focus on the heavy footsteps of Barton's boots. At last, Romanoff got a fire going. Its warmth seeps into your skin and slows your shivering. As you start to relax, the heat makes you drowsy. You stretch across the couch, tuck a throw pillow beneath your head, and close your eyes. You hear Barton in the kitchen brewing coffee for himself and Natasha. He sighs, sounding tired and defeated. You always wanted to meet STRIKE Team: Delta. Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff were living S.H.I.E.L.D. legends. Rumor has it, they-despite having no superpowers-were potential candidates for the Avengers Initiative. You never thought you would ever work with them, let alone be under their protection. You almost jump as cold yet gentle fingers brush against your shoulder as someone-Romanoff- drapes a warm, scratchy blanket over you. You can't hear her movements until the sharp scrape of a knife being sharpened accompanies the rumbling thunder outside. As you lay on the sofa half- asleep, you catch murmured conversation between the two assassins: "Natasha… how many agents-?" "Don't. Don't do that to yourself, Clint. This is monsters and magic, and nothing we were ever trained for." "He got away?" Clint sighs. "Yeah.” You want to tell them it's okay. The deaths of those agents are not their fault. The villain's escape is not their fault. You are alive and safe, therefore they're succeeding in their mission. You want to tell them they are heroes, except you don't think they would appreciate you eavesdropping on their conversation. "He's gonna make his play soon though. Today." "We got to stop him.” "Yeah? Who's 'we'?" "I don't know. Whoever's left." In the late hours of the night-or maybe the early hours of the morning now-your mind and body finally relaxes. Exhausted from the trials of the day before, you slowly succumb to sleep, lulled by the sounds of knife sharpening, your own soft breathing, and the low murmurs of the ones who will stay awake all night to protect you. For the first time since this living nightmare began, you feel safe.

It is one of the very best fanfictions I've read in a long while! ---- "I'm going to be late because of you." You catch yourself smiling at the spunky young adult who reminds you of yourself back when you were her age. "You're gonna be alive ‘cause of me." Clint returns. Shoving your cold hands into your pockets, you take in your surroundings through the fog of your frozen breath. The streets of New York bustle with people rushing through their last-minute Christmas shopping or holiday activities. You hear construction happening down the street, the harsh beeping of equipment cutting through the Christmas tunes and city ambiance. Your steps are loud as the snow crunches under your boots. You allow yourself to relax a fraction. There are no tracksuits, no excessive use of the word "bro" and no threats. For now. Out of the corner of your eye, you notice you were not the only one observing your surroundings. ‘Old habits die hard, partner,' you think to yourself. It's habits like these that kept you alive the last five years. "Oh. Being a gentleman walking on the outside. That's nice.” Only then did you notice that your partner had moved himself so that you and Kate Bishop were on his left side. "No, no. It's just so I can hear you. And to be clear, not 'cause I want to, just ‘cause I need to.” So it is a hearing aid. You had wondered what happened to cause Clint to lose his hearing since you and Ronin were taking down gangs and mafias together. You were doing just fine by yourself when Ronin came onto the scene. However, you quickly realized the power and fear that caught the hood like a fire catching dry wood. The name Ronin became infamous in the crime world, and you wanted that name on your side. He was adamant about working alone; said he already had a partner. "Well, where is he?" you had asked. From under the hood, crinkles formed around his eyes. "she. Trust me, she will kick your ass. Then she'll kick my ass for replacing her." When you insisted, he shook his head and told you he didn't want to drag you into this. His mission was vengeance. Rage and destruction and blood followed him like a shadow. You said, "Me too.” He never officially accepted you as his partner. So like Kate, you didn't take no for an answer and stitched yourself to his hip. Hey, you have yet to hear him complain. "No, my problem is you-” You catch Clint saying, snapping you out of the past. "-and this ninja suit that people were trying to kill you because of this ninja suit. The whole thing's a problem that I'm going to solve today so I can go home to my family.” That same ninja suit you saw on the news caused you to find Clint Barton. When you realized the past was not yet behind you, you left your New York apartment in the dead of night to track down your former partner. You didn't expect to find him with an archer girl and a dog with one eye that likes pizza. "No, it's branding,” Kate deadpans. You huff a laugh. Kate, who has idolized Hawkeye since childhood after seeing him fighting off Chitauri soldiers, has troubling matters of her own to deal with, which connect her unexpectedly with her hero.
