The MindBodyBrain Project
Exposing psychological myths and identifying strategies that really work, with Clinical Psychologist, with Dr. Nick Wignall

In an enlightening conversation, I sit down with Nick Wignall, a seasoned clinical psychologist, to discuss critical aspects of emotional resilience, stress management, insomnia, and the power of values. We delve into the nuances of emotional intelligence, challenge the conventional wisdom of stress management, and offer practical strategies to enhance mental well-being. What You'll Learn: Emotional Intelligence: Overrated or Misunderstood? Nick argues that while EQ is essential, it's often glamorised and misunderstood. He emphasises the need for emotional resilience over EQ, advocating for a balanced view where emotional fitness—a combination of resilience and fitness—plays a crucial role. Emotional resilience isn't just about understanding emotions; it’s about developing the capability to handle emotional challenges effectively. The Power of Values in Building Emotional Fitness: Nick introduces the concept of “emotional fitness,” akin to physical fitness, where consistent effort and practice lead to growth. The discussion highlights the role of values in guiding behaviour and building resilience. Paul shares personal anecdotes about how tapping into values like authenticity helped him address habits such as reducing alcohol consumption. Both agree that values serve as a compass, providing motivation and direction, especially during challenging times. Rethinking Stress Management: Challenging the notion of stress management, Nick and Paul suggest that instead of merely managing stress, individuals should address underlying stressors. They emphasise viewing stress as a potential growth area rather than something inherently negative. By shifting focus from managing symptoms to addressing roots, individuals can transform stress into a catalyst for development. Insomnia: More Than Just a Sleep Problem: Nick redefines insomnia, not as a sleep disorder, but as an anxiety-based problem. He underscores that insomnia often stems from excessive effort to control sleep, which paradoxically disrupts rest. Instead of intricate sleep rituals, the focus should be on reducing anxiety around sleep, adopting practices that encourage relaxation. The Scheduled Worry Practice: A Game Changer for Anxiety: Nick introduces the concept of a daily scheduled worry practice, proposing it as more effective than drugs or therapy for chronic anxiety. By dedicating specific time to acknowledge worries through writing, individuals can minimise their grip on daily life. This method, akin to exposure therapy, trains the brain to face worries head-on, reducing overall anxiety levels. Key Takeaways: Emotional intelligence is meaningful but thrives best when combined with active emotional resilience practices. Values are fundamental, serving as a guiding force in decision-making and personal growth, and are crucial for authentic living. True stress management involves addressing stressors, not just symptoms. This proactive approach transforms stress into an opportunity for growth. Viewing insomnia through the lens of anxiety highlights the importance of relaxation over rigid sleep routines. Scheduled worry practice offers a structured approach to deal with anxiety, promoting resilience and mental clarity. How can Ukraine hold the line against Russia?

It's a tense moment for Ukraine. The optimism that followed Ukraine's early successes on the battlefield in 2022 started to fade last summer as its counteroffensive failed to achieve a breakthrough. By late 2023, Ukraine's then-commander-in-chief said the war had reached a “stalemate” — and by the start of the spring, things were looking even worse, with high-ranking Ukrainian officers warning a collapse of the front lines could be imminent without more weapons from Washington. In mid-April, U.S. lawmakers finally passed a $60-billion aid package, buying Ukraine some time and some hope. But Ukraine's defense still faces major headwinds, and Russian forces have continued gradually advancing along various sections of the front line in recent weeks. Amid this enormous uncertainty, a new report from the International Crisis Group titled “Ukraine: How to Hold the Line” aims to distill the lessons of the past year for Ukraine and its backers. According to Simon Schlegel, the group's senior Ukraine analyst, if Ukraine and its partners take these lessons into account, Russia's aggression is “likely to fail” — but applying them will be anything but easy. Schlegel joined The Naked Pravda to discuss Crisis Group's recommendations for Kyiv and its supporters and the stakes for the wider region if Ukraine fails to hold the line against Russia. Building on his conversation in Episode 153, Portfolio Manager Samir Taghiyev takes a deep dive into the mental models and frameworks that Mawer uses to evaluate company management teams, particularly within the small-cap space. Using both personal and financial examples, he illustrates the benefit of exploration and exploitation, striking a balance between focus and curiosity, and identifying opportunities on the S curve of the corporate lifecycle. Key points from this episode: Company management can be evaluated by determining if they are growing revenues while controlling costs and risks. This can be combined with other frameworks to create a comprehensive picture. The exploration vs. exploitation framework can be used to evaluate how well management balances focus with curiosity. There are four phases in the S curve of the corporate lifecycle—startup, growth, maturity, and decline. Mawer focuses on companies in the middle two phases, with Trisura and TerraVest provided as examples. Incrementalism is very important when it comes to exploration vs. exploitation because it strikes a key balance between spending to de-risk and learning. Companies can either drive growth organically, often through the introduction of new products, or inorganically through acquisitions. Using the “look back” and “trust but verify” processes, the small-cap team leverages their historical notes and third-party information to improve their verification of management claims. (https://vmasrani.github.io/blog/2023/aecr-challenge/) Second: Can we predict human behaviour? A discussion with Brett Hall (https://vmasrani.github.io/blog/2023/predicting-human-behaviour/) Quotes 0.2: Do you hate libertarianism? No. To many people, libertarianism is a reaction against an over-regulated society, and an attempt to spread the word that some seemingly intractable problems can be solved by a hands-off approach. Many libertarians have made excellent arguments for why certain libertarian policies are the best options, and I agree with many of them. I think this kind of libertarianism is a valuable strain of political thought that deserves more attention, and I have no quarrel whatsoever with it and find myself leaning more and more in that direction myself. However, there's a certain more aggressive, very American strain of libertarianism with which I do have a quarrel. This is the strain which, rather than analyzing specific policies and often deciding a more laissez-faire approach is best, starts with the tenet that government can do no right and private industry can do no wrong and uses this faith in place of more careful analysis. This faction is not averse to discussing politics, but tends to trot out the same few arguments about why less regulation has to be better. I wish I could blame this all on Ayn Rand, but a lot of it seems to come from people who have never heard of her. I suppose I could just add it to the bottom of the list of things I blame Reagan for. - https://slatestarcodex.com/2017/02/22/repost-the-non-libertarian-faq/ Socials Follow us on Twitter at @IncrementsPod, @BennyChugg, @VadenMasrani Come join our discord server! My conversation with Dr. Larry Chapp today discusses the recent teaching edict of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith: Fiducia Supplicans. The document attempts to clarify the pastoral meaning of blessings, particularly in relation to "irregular unions," but falls short on several fronts. We discuss some of our issues with the document, including theological incoherence, the invention of straw man positions, and the potential for misinterpretation. We also explore the implications of divorcing pastoral practice from truth, and the need for love to be grounded in truth. Included in the discussion: clericalism, masked homophobia, incrementalism and the law of gradualism, responses from bishops conferences around the world, synodality and non-synodal approaches, comparisons to Humanae Vitae (ha!), the subseuqent press release, the endurance of the Church, support for LGBT Catholics, and much more. European governments are emerging from 15 years of on-again, off-again crises that upended their budgetary positions. From close to balance in 2008, the aggregate budget deficit for governments using the euro is now 3% of output while public debt is up from 66% to 90%. These "processes happened more forcefully", writes Alice Cavalieri in Italian Budgeting Policy: Between Punctuations and Incrementalism (Palgrave MacMillan, 2023). Since 2008, Italy's primary account excluding interest payments has turned from a substantial surplus to a deficit while public debt surged from 100% to 140% of output. At the same time, Italy's politics have fragmented – leading to the formation of seven governments in ten years – and, for 15 months in 2018-2019, Western Europe's first-ever administration run only by populists.  Italy's budgetary framework has been tested like no other. “The budget unmasks politicians,” writes Cavalieri. “In contrast to other political documents, the budget cannot be exploited as a mere showcase of policy positions without any future but is rather a litmus test of actual policy priorities. It leaves no room for imagination, as it translates policy commitments into a quantifiable amount of financial resources, listing revenues and expenses for a delimited time period and conveying the services that the state wants to provide to its citizens and what specific services and to what extent citizens are entitled to them. Thus, it is not simply a document, it is a political act". Alice Cavalieri is a research fellow at the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the University of Trieste. For decades now the media and our politicians have been explaining to us that the reason America is stagnant is because Washington D.C. can't work together and compromise on solutions that work for the citizens. This explanation, however, rests on the premise that solutions to our problems can be created and offered by politicians. In fact, this premise is often just accepted as a given. However, Washington D.C. doesn't create solutions, it creates interventions, many of which make them richer at our expense. What's actually happening here is they are compromising (conspiring) to steal more of your liberty. Join me today as I dig into the results produced by compromise and incrementalism and show how neither of these is good for liberty or our civil society. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/seth-martin0/message

Today we're joined by Bradley Pierce, president of the Foundation to Abolish Abortion and VP of Heritage Defense, to discuss the abortion abolitionist movement and what it broadly believes. First we explain what some of the differences might be between abolitionists and pro-lifers, one of which is that abolitionists largely believe in criminal charges for a woman who gets an abortion. We discuss what justice for abortions might look like and how to balance impartiality and compassion for those misled by the media and the abortion industry. While it may seem like abortion abolitionists and pro-lifers are on the same side, much abolition legislation has been struck down by the pro-life camp – why is this, and what other criticisms of the pro-life movement exist from the other side? Abolitionists also don't believe in abortion restrictions, such as heartbeat bills, unless they are full bans (and in some cases have other qualifications). We discuss this rejection of incrementalism and ask what the proposals are that replace this method of fighting abortion. Will abolition legislation put women at risk who have had miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies, and why do abolitionists attack pro-lifers online? The July 2023 NATO Summit in Vilnius, Lithuania was a chance to end the ambiguity and incrementalism that has left Ukraine vulnerable to Russian aggression and continues to feed Putin's delusions that he can win the war and beat the Western alliance. The NATO summit, Ukraine's summer counter-offensive, and the recent instability between Russia and the Wagner Group have ensured that the Russo-Ukrainian war remains in the headlines. But what discussions are happening behind closed doors and what events on the ground may be influencing the direction of the war and its aftermath? Eating meat is such an everyday thing for most people that discussions about on animal protection are pretty rare or almost nonexisten. A lot of farmed animals are raised inhumanely and treated not as living things but as mere commodities. In this episode, Corinna Bellizzi chats with AJ Albrecht, Managing Director of Mercy for Animals, an organization that aims to end industrial animal agriculture by constructing a sustainable food system. She talks about the dangers of factory farming to animals, the need for more organic food choices, and the benefits of adopting a plant-based diet. AJ also shares their efforts to pass a bill that shifts the responsibility of the broken food system from everyday consumers to major corporations profiting from factory farming.About Guest:AJ Albrecht is the Managing Director of Mercy For Animals in the United States and Canada.
