How close did the United States came to tearing itself apart during the American Revolution? And what can we learn from the turbulent birth of the United States? To illuminate this critical chapter in American history and its contemporary implications, Tavis is joined by Eli Merritt, political historian at Vanderbilt University and author of the new text "Disunion Among Ourselves: The Perilous Politics of the American Revolution" (June 2023). In the book, Merritt takes us on a journey through this tumultuous period, revealing how the Founding Fathers grappled with the very real specter of disunion and civil war. Against all odds, they managed to unite for the cause of liberty and self-preservation, forging historic compromises (such as the Declaration of Independence in 1776, the Mississippi-Fisheries Compromise of 1779, and the ratification of the Articles of Confederation in 1781.) In a time marked by political hyperpolarization, Merritt joins Tavis for a conversation on how the lessons from this critical period in American history can resonate with our contemporary challenges.

Diverse Voices Book Review host Hopeton Hay interviewed Eli Merritt, author of DISUNION AMONG OURSELVES: The Perilous Politics of the American Revolution. DISUNION AMONG OURSELVES  tells the story of the deep political divisions that beset the Continental Congress during the American Revolution. So fractious were the founders' political fights that they feared the War of Independence might end in disunion and civil war. In our interview, Merritt discussed the relevance of this history to the challenges American democracy faces today, and the dark path demagogues our driving America to. The former Mayor of New York, whose reputation has suffered from his constant efforts to back Donald Trump at any cost, and Lizzo, widely regarded as the greatest hip-hop flautist in the game, have something in common. It's not that they've both sexted with members of the Minnesota Vikings, that we know. It's that they're both getting sued with allegations of racism, sexism, harassment, and wage theft. In a provocative new book, historian Eli Merritt argues that the Thirteen Colonies only overcame their differences and united into a single entity due to an existential fear of civil war, collapse, and invasion. That fear is now gone. This week on Deconstructed, Merritt joins Ryan Grim to discuss his new book, “Disunion Among Ourselves: The Perilous Politics of the American Revolution.” Merritt argues that the founders — motivated by surviving as an independent government — united to avoid a civil war between the colonies. The “survivalist interpretation” of the nation's founding, he explains, led to a historic “shotgun wedding”: a compromise-laden journey leading to the Declaration of Independence and a failure to confront slavery. If you'd like to support our work, go to theintercept.com/give, where your donation, no matter what the amount, makes a real difference. And if you haven't already, please subscribe to the show so you can hear it every week. The simple version of American history depicts the original 13 American colonies banding together as one, declaring their independence in 1776, fighting and winning an eight-year-long War of Independence against the British, and then triumphantly establishing the United States of America. But how united was this new nation? Political historian Eli Merritt asserts that despite its harmonious sounding name, the United States was actually more like a shotgun marriage that nearly ended in a quick divorce.Merritt is the author of a new book, “Disunion Among Ourselves: The Perilous Politics of the American Revolution.” “The American Union was an unwelcome alliance formed by bitterly conflictual colonies and regions,” he wrote. The primary purpose of the original American government, he said, was to prevent the colonies from disintegrating into civil war.Merritt is a professor of political science at Vanderbilt University and writes political commentary for the New York Times, Los Angeles Times and for his Substack, American Commonwealth. Merritt said that America's founders warned of the danger of demagogues.“The first step in democratic breakdown is the election of a demagogue to power,” he wrote. "The demagogue is someone who wins votes by dividing the people not uniting the people … through fear mongering, through hate mongering, through bigotry. And sadly, it works. “The demagogue converts into an authoritarian once drinking at the cup of power. … We did see precisely that with Donald Trump.”Merritt argues that the founding story of the U.S. affirms that “when a government turns unconstitutional and repressive, you have the right of revolution, which means first, the right of resistance.”Merritt said he believes that Juneteenth is a far more significant day of independence than July 4. “This is the emancipation of 4 million enslaved people,” he said. “It is clearly the most important event in all U.S. history.”

As always, Eli takes what we think we know about history and turns it on its head. The United States as we know it was not a fait accompli, in fact far from it. Merritt details the many compromises it took for the Colonies to reach an agreement and move forward, from choosing George Washington as the leader of the Army, to Jefferson writing The Declaration of Independence and of course our biggest sin, perpetuating slavery. We also discuss Juneteenth and how we need to understand that history is not zero-sum but additive. As always, I cannot recommend Merritt's work enough and hope you will give a listen, a read and then discuss it with your peers.
