We discuss how psychiatry developed under capitalism, the link between economic value and mental illness, the sociocultural context of psychiatry, and the madness of business enterprise. We discuss an economic style of psychiatric reasoning as a hermeneutic strategy for self-intelligibility, psychiatric diagnoses as interpretations, and when immoral behaviors are labelled as illnesses. Finally, we discuss a critique of capitalism, and a realistic perspective on psychiatry.--A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, HEDIN BRØNNER, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ALEX CHAU, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. O Pre-Bet Show está de volta e esta época chega com uma novidade especial: damos as boas-vindas de forma permanente à Rita Fontemanha, que passa a fazer parte da nossa equipa para mais uma temporada de futebol, debate e muita audácia. No FC Porto, a base parece sólida e o Diogo Costa continua a valer pontos.

Red, White & Blues FC | Butterfly Tattoos, a Mid-Episode Signing, and City CirclingChalobah's gone, City want three of ours, Chelsea completed a transfer while we were literally recording, and we made a tattoo pact on air. Normal Thursday. We open the only correct way — laughing at Arsenal, who apparently believed they had a shot at Vinícius Júnior right up until he pointed out he isn't tired of winning Champions Leagues yet. From there it's a rumor-mill episode, because there's exactly one confirmed piece of Chelsea business this week and about fifteen things that might be. Jason delivers a full monologue on why transfer season is the footballing equivalent of being cornered by someone describing their dream. And then, halfway through the Enzo conversation, Fabrizio broke a deal live and we had a new signing before the episode ended.Farewell, Trevoh ChalobahThe one concrete thing: Chalobah is officially a Como player, €30m plus €6m in add-ons. He'd been at the club roughly twenty years and BlueCo never knew what to do with him — treated like an afterthought, shipped out on loan, brought back, never quite trusted. Neither of us pretends he was world class, but that was always fine. He was an excellent role player who could cover injuries, give you cup minutes, and actually loved Chelsea, and you need those in a squad. He was better than Disasi, better than Badiashile, and frequently better than Fofana. Thanks, Trev. Enjoy Italy. BlueCo got their £30m of pure profit. The Rumor Mill: Osimhen, Diogo Costa, and Too Many DefendersTottenham have made an offer for Victor Osimhen, so naturally Chelsea might go back in for Osimhen — because they have a toy and now we want the toy. That's three summers running. It fell apart on wages last time, he's two years older, and nothing about the math has changed. More interesting: Portuguese reports have Chelsea in talks for Diogo Costa and ready to match his €60m release clause, which is the one goalkeeper move we're both fully on board with, even if he'd be inheriting the same shambolic back line. On which — do we need more defenders? Yes, but we still have Disasi, Badiashile, Tosin, Mamadou Sarr, and Aarón Anselmino sitting there, and only the last two have youth as an excuse. Badiashile's linked to Napoli, Tosin reportedly has “lots of interest” per Fabrizio (please, take him), and Crystal Palace have submitted a loan with an obligation to buy for Disasi — take it, take five pounds, just get out of the Disasi business. Move those three and you're left with Fofana, Lacroix, Colwill, Anselmino and Hato covering in, which is enough. Sell this summer, clear the deadwood, buy quality next year once we're back in the Champions League. The Butterfly Tattoo PactThen the bad news: Chelsea are reportedly leaning toward a transfer or loan for Mudryk to Strasbourg. We said on Monday we'd riot, and we meant it — this administration was already dead to Jason, and he's not sure what's past dead. Daniel's position is that if Mudryk leaves, the title dream is gone, Champions League is gone, we're in the Conference League, we might not qualify for Europe at all. His actual vision for the season: Chelsea win the league by three points because Mudryk comes off the bench to score a 90th-minute winner against Arsenal in a 2-1. And so the pact, arrived at independently by both of us, which is what almost thirty years of friendship does to two people: if Mudryk stays and Chelsea win the league, we both get the exact butterfly tattoo. One cheek each. Possibly a wing apiece so we can moon people in formation. The one loan destination we'd actually enjoy is Coventry, purely to watch Frank Lampard coach up Mudryk — and it's genuinely nice to see Lamps is a good manager after all, just one who was handed two impossible situations at Chelsea.City Want Three of Ours, and Has Enzo Peaked?Manchester City have been linked with three Chelsea players in one day: Malo Gusto at £75m, Pedro Neto around £70m, and now Enzo Fernández, with Rodri reportedly off to Barcelona and Maresca wanting Enzo as the replacement. The Gusto number is Chelsea pricing a player so he doesn't sell — City said interested, but absolutely not at 75, which is what anyone with a footballing brain would say. Neto's number, by contrast, is priced to be paid, and the official line that he's “a very important part of the squad but the price would have to be right” translates cleanly as: we'll sell him tomorrow to a big enough sucker. Neither of us will miss Neto, a player who does almost nothing with an enormous amount of talent and whose main skill is spamming crosses without knowing where they're going. The Enzo conversation is the meatiest thing in the episode. Has he peaked? Jason thinks roughly yes — 20 goal contributions a year is his ceiling, and last season's 10 goals and 4 assists are attacking-midfielder numbers, not the Fàbregas-style controller you'd want beside Caicedo. That's exactly why the pivot fails: Caicedo drops to a fifth defender, Enzo pushes forward, and Chelsea simply cede the middle of the pitch, which is what Maresca did to us all season. Lavia is the right profile, if Lavia could ever string together ninety minutes, which in three years he hasn't. We both like Enzo, both think he plays hard for the badge — and both suspect he's a mercenary who'd play just as hard for City's badge the moment they pay him.And Then We Signed Someone Mid-EpisodePep Chavarría to Chelsea, broken by Fabrizio while we were recording: €19m plus €2m in add-ons, flying for a medical, signatures the same night. A 28-year-old left back from Rayo Vallecano who has never been capped by Spain. Daniel's verdict is blunt — this is not a Xabi Alonso signing, this is 100% a BlueCo signing, and the idea that every arrival this window is an Alonso pick is a narrative the club is happy to let run. In fairness, Chelsea genuinely don't have a left back since Cucurella left; Hato can do it but is better at left center back, and Palestra can technically cover. The question is whether we've just bought a starter or a very expensive backup. Elsewhere in the Juventus match: Hato started at left back, Palestra and Quenda linked up well on the right and Quenda had a strong first half, Fofana has publicly announced he wants to prove he can be the player we thought he was before the injuries — which mostly tells you he knows what the rest of us know. The squad is bloated, more players keep arriving, and the thing Chelsea are worst at is the thing they most urgently need to do. As Jason puts it: BlueCo aren't bad at selling players, they're bad at buying them, and then they have to sell the bad players they bought, and nobody wants them because they're bad.Programming NoteThe live Thursday show didn't happen this week and probably won't next week either — most likely we kick it off properly when the season starts. We discuss why we learn from others, when we copy others, and how we learn from others despite our individual differences. We talk about what Zionism was originally, how it became intertwined with the displacement of Palestinian people, and how it became a state ideology and a settler colonialist ideology. We discuss the “anti-Zionist” label. We talk about what it is like to grow up in Israel. We discuss whether Hamas and Hezbollah are resistance movements. We discuss what could be the aftermath of the genocide in Gaza, and why Israel is in a state of forever war with its neighbors. Finally, we talk about how there could be stability in the Middle East.--A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, HEDIN BRØNNER, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ALEX CHAU, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Red, White & Blues FC | 4:45 AM Football, a Set-Piece Guru, and a Plan to Get a New GoalkeeperChelsea are in Sydney, we are not waking up for it, and Xabi Alonso just gave us a reason to root against our own back line.Preseason is here, which means Chelsea are on the other side of the planet playing Western Sydney Wanderers at 4:45 in the morning our time. We open by loudly committing to live stream it and then immediately un-committing, which tells you most of what you need to know about how much stock we put in the Sydney Super Cup. But underneath the jokes there's actually a bit of optimism creeping in this year — a training session that looked like real coaching, a new set-piece coach who might be the best in the business, and a manager saying things a manager is supposed to say. Then there's the goalkeeper situation, where we land on a plan so stupid it might work.Australia at 4:45 AM, and Why We're Even ThereThe tour is Sydney (Western Sydney Wanderers, then Tottenham), Hong Kong, Jakarta, and Malaysia, with Juventus and AC Milan in there too, a Real Sociedad friendly at Stamford Bridge on August 15, and then the season opener away at Fulham because we are apparently never allowed a home opener. Jason's read: this is a cash grab with terrible timing, and if BlueCo would just sell the front of the shirt — four years running now — maybe we wouldn't need to be chasing the Australian and Southeast Asian markets at dawn. Daniel's more forgiving: let the boys go on tour, do some PR, build rapport with a new manager. We check the weather in all four cities like the professionals we are. We also agree that a Tottenham derby in Sydney is not a derby, because nobody out there is going to hate anybody properly.Preseason Expectations: Please Just Don't Get HurtJason's forecast is bleak and specific — one to five players will get injured, they'll be pivotal, and the transfer strategy hasn't accounted for it, because it never does. Daniel finds the silver lining: minutes for the academy lads, Levi Colwill getting his legs back, Cole Palmer maybe getting going, and Estêvão on the pitch. We're missing Caicedo, possibly Enzo, Reece James, Morgan Rogers, and Geovany Quenda, which limits what anyone can actually learn. The bar is simple: don't lose to Western Sydney Wanderers, don't lose to the side in Jakarta. Lose to Tottenham, Juventus, or Milan and fine, we're learning a new system. And if there is one prayer we're saying out loud, it's that Estêvão comes home in one piece.Austin MacPhee Is Here and He's a Glorious BastardThe genuine highlight. Chelsea have hired Austin MacPhee from Aston Villa, the Scottish set-piece specialist who also works with the Portugal national team, whose Villa side outscored every club in Europe's top five leagues from set pieces in 23/24 and finished joint-top with Arsenal in the Premier League last season — the difference being Arsenal shat their way to it and MacPhee does it properly. If this podcast has one recurring complaint over four years, it's Chelsea set pieces. We once lost our minds over a short corner under Pochettino. Hiring an actual set-piece guru, rather than another motivational coach imported to install a “winning mentality,” is the single clearest sign that somebody at the club is taking this seriously. Daniel is now on a mission to find MacPhee's Twitter, ask him his favorite scotch, and get him on the show. Austin, if you're listening: there's also Miller Lite, and you look like a Miller Lite guy.The Goalkeeper Plan (Root Against Your Own Defense)Xabi Alonso has said everything is open, every position, and per Ben Jacobs on the CFC Hub he's asked the club for time to assess the keepers in preseason before making a recommendation. Which leads Daniel to the big-brain question: shouldn't we then want to ship a load of goals in Australia? Jason is fully on board — a preseason loss tells you nothing about the club, but it tells you plenty about the goalkeeper. So, Levi and Josh, do us a solid and let a few in. Underneath the bit is a real argument we go back and forth on. Robert Sánchez is a genuinely excellent shot-stopper — 95 saves, nine clean sheets, statistically a better shot-stopper than Mike Maignan, in a harder league — and the 47 goals conceded says as much about Wesley Fofana's pace, Tosin's one-v-one defending, and Mamadou Sarr as it does about him. But he can't distribute, he can't play with his feet, and every manager keeps asking him to do exactly that. There's a £60m keeper with a release clause sitting there in Diogo Costa who does both. Pay it, keep Penders, and let us stop holding our breath every time the ball rolls back.Estêvão vs. Yamal, and the Photo We Refuse to BelieveWe close on the good stuff. Alonso on Estêvão: “plays with the confidence of someone who's been in Europe for years — age means nothing when the talent is that special.” We both think this is his breakout year and the hype only grows. Jason rates him above Lamine Yamal for one reason: humility. The only off-pitch photos of Estêvão are of him in church; Yamal's are from the club. Not a moral judgment, just a pattern — Messi didn't live that way, Ronaldo didn't live that way, and Daniel's comparison point is Neymar, all that talent shadowed by off-pitch noise and injuries. And speaking of Messi, we are not letting go of the bathtub photo. Why did nobody see that image until the World Cup? We're calling AI, we're calling gaslight, and we're calling for a whole midweek episode of football conspiracy theories where we take turns dragging each other down the rabbit hole. Transfer season is in full swing, England are out of the World Cup, and Chelsea's board is once again €20 million short of common sense. We get into all of it.Church is in session this week as we run through everything that's happened — and pointedly not happened — in Chelsea's transfer window. Trevoh Chalobah looks bound for Como, the Pep Chavarría saga has gone fully sideways, and we're now officially linked to Porto's Diogo Costa, which naturally means the board thinks he's worth €20m less than his release clause. We also debut a brand new segment: the Shitty Transfer Rumor of the Week. It goes about as well as you'd expect.Farewell, TrevChalobah has finally said yes to Como — except now Como might be getting cold feet, having never actually met our valuation. We're both sad to see him go: Chelsea through and through, a solid role player who did a lot for the club. Jason floats a theory that Como is waiting on England's third-place match to see if Trev finally gets minutes (and stays healthy) before dropping the cash. Also on the record: if Thomas Tuchel plays Reece James in that match, we are both going to lose it.The Left-Back Saga: Chavarría vs. CarrerasRayo Vallecano has gone from wanting €21m for Pep Chavarría to demanding his full €42 million release clause — for a 28-year-old with zero Spain caps whose market value sits around €10m. Meanwhile we've bid €25m for Real Madrid's Álvaro Carreras, a player Xabi Alonso has actually managed and might actually want. We go back and forth on which link is real, but land in the same place: if the prices are comparable, go get the guy your manager knows. And half of Chelsea Twitter screaming “back Xabi” over a Rayo left-back needs to log off.Diogo Costa and the €20 Million ProblemHere's the one that sends Daniel over the edge. Chelsea are linked to Porto keeper Diogo Costa — Portugal's starting goalkeeper at this World Cup — who has a €60m release clause. The board's position? He's worth more like 40. Just pay the extra €20 million and lock down the position for the next five to seven years. Get a shirt sponsor — you know, like every other club in the Premier League has — and you've found the money. Five sporting directors, and this is the M.O. every time: wildly overpay (Cucurella, Mudryk, Gittens, Delap, Fofana, Badiashile, Disasi) or nickel-and-dime a deal to death. There's no in-between.John Stones on a Free?Joe Cole and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink both say Chelsea should sign John Stones on a free after City let him walk. Jason's initially in — then remembers Stones is 32 and, in Daniel's words, “can't jump anymore.” But with Chalobah leaving and our record buying defenders in their prime, we grudgingly agree: he started every England match at the World Cup while Fofana, Disasi and Badiashile sat at home. He can't make the back line worse. The fact that we're seriously weighing this — and might lose the bidding war to Leeds — tells you exactly where this club is right now.Shitty Transfer Rumor of the Week (New Segment!)Our new favorite thing. Jason brings a single-sourced Egyptian TV report that Mo Salah wants to come home to Chelsea. Daniel counters with PSG — the two-time defending Champions League winners — preparing a €65m bid for Nicolas Jackson. Both are complete nonsense. Both are exactly why this segment exists. We close with the Disasi-to-West-Ham rumor (£25m reported) and whether this board will ever move the players nobody wants. This is a public episode. In this episode, we start by talking about the piece “The Right Wants You Stupid”. We explore the historical link between anti-intellectualism and the American right, the idea of a natural order to society, and how it benefits the ruling class. We talk about anti-intellectualism in the American modern era, and charges against SJWs, feminists, Marxists, the wokes, and “cultural Marxism”. We also discuss whether the right is really in favor of academic freedom. We then talk about Dr. McManus' piece “Steven Pinker Doesn't Know Anything About Marxism”, and explore how he is wrong about Marxism; whether Marxism has really been tried in any society; Pinker's flawed take on the Enlightenment; and issues with Pinker's approach to history, anthropology, politics, and economics. We talk about whether artworks themselves can be depraved, and the intentions of artists. We talk about sex, nudity, “obscenity”, and pornography. Christian Polanco and Alexis Guerreros react to Colombia's hard-fought 0-0 draw with Portugal, a result that secures first place in the group for Los Cafeteros while leaving Portugal searching for answers ahead of the knockout rounds. The guys break down the biggest moments from the match and discuss why Colombia continues to look like one of the tournament's most balanced teams heading into the Round of 32. Next, The Cooligans examine Portugal's disappointing performance and ask the biggest question surrounding Roberto Martínez's side: can Portugal realistically win the World Cup with Cristiano Ronaldo leading the line? After another ineffective outing in a marquee match, Christian and Alexis debate whether changes are needed before the knockout rounds. They also reveal their Player of the Match, Diogo Costa, whose outstanding goalkeeping performance helped Portugal escape with a draw. To wrap up the show, the guys look ahead to the Round of 32, breaking down Colombia's matchup against Ghana and Portugal's showdown with Croatia. They also preview two of the most intriguing knockout fixtures, Canada vs. South Africa and Brazil vs. Japan, discussing which teams are best positioned to make a deep World Cup run and where the biggest potential upsets could happen. We start by discussing what conflict resolution is, how it is studied cross-culturally, and how it varies cross-culturally. We talk about human universals, and whether they are necessarily evolved adaptations. We talk about the role of reciprocity; relationships and interconnections; justice, and respecting the rights of others; reconciliation, apology and forgiveness; and revenge. His research investigates how people initiate romantic relationships and the psychological mechanisms that help romantic partners to remain committed and attached. One of his research programs examines how the qualities that people say are critically important to them in a romantic partner - their ideal partner preferences - direct partner selection and retention. He is the author of Bonded by Evolution: The New Science of Love and Connection. In this episode, we start by criticizing the three pillars of the evolutionary psychology of mating. We discuss whether pursuing a “short-term strategy” influences someone's long-term relationship prospects. We discuss whether dating apps are realistic. We talk about the association between evolutionary psychology and the manosphere, and we speculate on the traits of evolutionary psychologists. We talk about the contemporary issues of loneliness, sexlessness, and singlehood, and the causes behind them. His research revolves around the idea that theories from evolutionary biology can shed light on human psychology. In particular, he's interested in the evolutionary origins of altruistic behavior and human sex differences. His latest book is A Billion Years of Sex Differences: How Evolution Shaped the Minds of Men and Women. In this episode, we focus on A Billion Years of Sex Differences. We start by discussing what sex differences are, why they matter, and the best ways of studying them. We talk about people who minimize or exaggerate sex differences, and five positions in the nature-nurture debate surrounding sex differences. We discuss limitations with behavioral genetics, cross-cultural evidence, and cross-species evidence. We talk about the most robust sex differences, and we debate educational and occupational choices. We discuss whether sex differences can be compatible with feminism. We talk about the evolution of sex differences. We discuss how to think about intersex people, trans people, and non-binary people. Finally, we talk about the best approach to deal socially with sex differences.--A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, HEDIN BRØNNER, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ALEX CHAU, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Check the website here: http://enlites.com/ THIS INTERVIEW IS IN PORTUGUESE.O Dr. Nuno Pessoa Gil é médico psiquiatra no Centro Hospitalar de Tondela-Viseu, membro da Unidade Terapêutica de Dor Crónica do CHTV, assim como Diretor do Serviço de Psiquiatria e Saúde Mental do CHTV.
