Since 2010, Eugene's minor league baseball team have been playing at University of Oregon’s PK Park. But with a MLB decision to upgrade to a more expanded season, conflicting schedules and facility requirements mean the Emerald's can no longer play at the field they’ve known for the past decade. The team has proposed a multi-use facility, but they only have two-thirds of the funds to pay the $90.4 million bill they would need. Allan Benavides, the general manager of the Ems, joins us to share what’s next and what the team means for the community.

When the Eugene Emeralds announced that they would play as the Exploding Whales for a few games this season, general manager Allan Benavides was unsure how people would react to the club's nod to the famous 1970 incident on an Oregon beach. The club had ordered merchandise with the new, alternate logo. Enough shirts, jerseys and hats, Benavides thought, to last through Christmas. It sold out in 90 seconds. Benavides, who has worked in minor league baseball for two decades, joined Sports by Northwest this week to discuss the Exploding Whales debut this weekend and also the future of professional baseball in Eugene. Here are some highlights from this week's show: · What fans attending an Exploding Whales game can expect to see · The recent promotion that MLB executives disapproved of · The future of the Emeralds hinges on construction of a new stadium by 2025 · Is there any hope of Major League Baseball landing on Portland for a new team in expansion? Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants' announcement that they have extended invitations to four teams to be affiliates under a new agreement with Major League Baseball. Triple-A Sacramento and Double-A Richmond are set to remain affiliates, but the Giants plan to ditch their affiliation with Augusta Green Jackets in favor of a High-A affiliation with the Eugene Emeralds. San Jose would move from High-A to Low-A under the new agreement. The Giants also announced that they signed catcher Chadwick Tromp to a major league deal, and they signed several others to minor league pacts. Tromp was non-tendered by the Giants last Wednesday. Ben also talks about tomorrow's Rule 5 Draft, and about how Mike Yastrzemski is a finalist for the All-MLB Team, which will be revealed today.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
