Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell encountered something new on the JP Miller beat over the past week and it might just be his villain origin story. Myrtle Beach churchy-business bro “Pastor” John-Paul Miller — who stands accused of stalking and harassing his estranged wife Mica Francis and allegedly contributing to her death in April 2024 — got married this past weekend to his rumored longtime paramour Suzie Skinner — the widow of a quadriplegic man who was found dead at the bottom of his community pool in September 2021 (two weeks after he allegedly told JP to stay away from his wife and kids). The beach wedding appeared to be hastily pulled together and none of their combined seven children were seen at the wedding, according to sources. The big question everyone has on their minds after Sunday's nuptials: What are these two up to? Also on the show Mandy and Liz share more recordings in the Scott Spivey case (aka the Horry County Police Department corruption case). Turns out North Myrtle Beach businessman Weldon Boyd got even more help from police officers after he and his friend Bradley Williams shot and killed Scott on Sept. 9, 2023. LUNASHARK reporter and researcher Beth Braden discovered that about an hour after Scott was killed, HCPD Officer Kerry Higgs advised Weldon to stop talking because he might have to walk his story back later. Higgs told Weldon to wait for detectives to get to the scene because they would give him the timeline and chronology of events (presumably so Weldon could shape his narrative around it).  Meanwhile a detective with HCPD — the one who interviewed the only witness to see what Scott did (didn't do) in the very last moments of his life — filed a report mixing up the order of events in a way that only served to help corroborate Weldon's account … directly contradicting the witness' 911 call and his video interview.  Plus, we'll give an update on surprising news out of Houston, TX connected to the (2:32) Christa Bauer Gilley case. Let's dive in!

On May 3rd, 2013, 23-year-old Amber Berbiglia never showed up for work. She was always on time, so her coworkers immediately knew something was wrong. They texted and called but received no reply. Around the same time Amber's coworkers were trying to reach her, two separate 911 calls came in. The first was from a caller who reported an abandoned vehicle. The second came from a group of kids who said they had seen a body near the same car. When detectives arrived, they found Amber dead. She had suffered severe trauma to her head, and at first, it was assumed she had been shot. But the autopsy told a different story—she had been beaten, and her arms showed signs that she had fought back. Now, more than a decade later, the person who did this to Amber still hasn't been caught—and her family and friends are still fighting for answers. 23-year-old Amber Berbiglia left her apartment on Golf Colony Lane in Little River, South Carolina, to run errands in the Myrtle Beach area. She first went to get a haircut in North Myrtle Beach before heading to Ross Dress for Less on Kings Road.  After returning items, she was then spotted at the Murphy's Gas Station on Kings Road at 2:00 p.m., before paying her cable bill roughly ten minutes later on Main Street, also known as Ocean Drive, in North Myrtle Beach. She was supposed to arrive at her job—Greg Norman's Australian Grill—by 4:00 p.m., but she never made it. Instead, two 911 calls came in reporting her car abandoned on Old Sanders Road under Robert Edge Parkway. Amber's body was discovered beaten, just feet from her car. Her cause of death was blunt force trauma with two skull fractures. There were no signs of robbery—her phone was within inches of her fingers, and her purse and cash were inside the car, untouched. Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — and the whole LUNASHARK team — are celebrating 100 episodes of True Sunlight Podcast, the show that emerged from their relentless pursuit of justice in the highly acclaimed Murdaugh Murders Podcast (which, of course, is the basis for the star-studded Hulu scripted series currently filming in Atlanta).  What better way to celebrate two years of post-Murdaugh reporting than with an old throwback … breaking Murdaugh news on a Wednesday! Former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill was arrested and charged with four felony counts — two misconduct in office charges, an obstruction of justice charge and perjury.  Though three of the charges are related to Alex Murdaugh's murder trial they are NOT related to Dick and Jim's claims of jury-tampering. Two of the charges are specifically related to photos of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh's dead bodies, which were allegedly leaked to a "news" agency during the trial and later distributed to random people following the Murdaugh case. Hmmm... But will these charges affect Alex's chances at getting a new trial?  Also on the show, an update in the (18:49) Jane Doe lawsuits against Myrtle Beach “pastor” John-Paul Miller.  Plus, our continuing coverage of (34:17) the Weldon Boyd Calls. From the second North Myrtle Beach businessman opened his truck door after shooting 33-year-old Scott Spivey of Tabor City, North Carolina, to death in September 2023, Boyd began his search for the perfect narrative — one that would explain his presence on Camp Swamp Road and fit the definition of the Stand Your Ground law; that would explain why Scott was shot to death in the back and in his truck; one that integrated the emerging bits of information Weldon appeared to be getting from the shadows of the so-called investigation by Horry County Police Department.  Lots to cover, so let's dive in...

In September 2023, highly connected North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, businessman Weldon Boyd and his friend Bradley Williams shot 33-year-old Scott Spivey to death on a rural road. From the very start, Horry County Police Department seemed to go to great lengths to paint Spivey as the aggressor and Boyd and Williams as merely victims who had no choice but to defend themselves. Months later — after an alleged investigation — Horry County Police, 15th Circuit Solicitor Jimmy Richardson, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson's office all declined to file charges against Boyd and Williams, citing insufficient evidence … the very same evidence that is now at the heart of what is turning out to be one of the most egregious cases of public corruption in a state that never fails in outdoing itself in that regard.  Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell sit down with Scott Spivey's mother, Deborah, and his sister, Jennifer Spivey Foley who — along with attorney Mark Tinsley — continue to battle the broken system to get justice for Scott. On today's episode Deborah and Jennifer share stories about the Real Scott Spivey, discuss the overlooked but glaring facts of the case and talk about what it's been like to be betrayed over and again but a law enforcement agency that's supposed to serve and protect.  ⚖️☕ Premium Members also get access to episode videos, case files, live trial coverage and exclusive live experiences with our hosts. CLICK HERE to learn more: https://bit.ly/3BdUtOE. Many adults with schizophrenia rely on family members for daily support, often depending on parents in their 50s or 60s. As these parents grow older, they face mounting physical and emotional challenges — along with the pressing question of who will care for their child in the future. In this episode of Inside Schizophrenia, host Rachel Star Withers, who lives with schizophrenia, and co-host Gabe Howard dive into the unique struggles of aging parents caring for an adult child with schizophrenia. Joining the conversation is Maye Jepson, a mother and caregiver to an adult son with schizophrenia. As a passionate advocate and a master's-level counselor, Maye offers invaluable insights on navigating the caregiving journey and preparing for the future. Maye Jepson lives in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and, along with her husband Phil, is the caregiver/TRUST PARTNER and parent of Jason Jepson who has a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder. Remembering the uncertain days when her family first learned of her son's mental illness, Maye formed a Facebook support group — Parenting Thru Mental Illness — hoping to give and share resources for those who are newly entering the world of mental illness. In the past, Maye has volunteered with several international boards, including Stonecroft Ministries, Imago Dei Arts, and Global Partners in Hope. In addition to a Bachelor of Science degree, Maye has a master's degree in counseling from Marshall University. Like her son, Maye volunteers with the Share Network where she shares her perspective on mental health as a parent, wanting desperately to help a young adult child maneuver the challenges of schizophrenia. She works as a Care Guide for Johnson and Johnson's Connected by Hope program. Maye serves on the Advisory Board of Students with Psychosis because she believes in the importance of shedding light on mental health issues from the youngest to the oldest consumer. Maye and her son Jason were Finalists for the Social Health Network's Best Team award, and they were the recipients of the Students with Psychosis Family Advocacy Award. Our host, Rachel Star Withers, creates videos documenting her schizophrenia, ways to manage and let others like her know they are not alone and can still live an amazing life. She has written Lil Broken Star: Understanding Schizophrenia for Kids and a tool for schizophrenics, To See in the Dark: Hallucination and Delusion Journal. Fun Fact: She has wrestled alligators. This is a big deal — especially considering he's yet another man with resources who seems to think he can buy his way out of consequence with a pricey defense team that includes the likes of Robert Durst's attorney, Dick DeGuerin, and maybe even an image consultant, based on his public behavior as of late.  Also on the show, Mandy and Liz take listeners on their first deep dive into the killing of (11:15) Scott Spivey of Tabor City, North Carolina. Thirty-three-year-old Scott was shot to death in a hail of bullets in September 2023 on a rural highway in Horry County, South Carolina. In other news around the club industry, the greenside bunker renovation project at Tidewater Golf Club in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., included the renovation of all greenside bunkers, repaired drainage, reshaped bunkers for increased playability and aesthetic benefits, and renovated several fairway bunkers to improve sight lines and reduce hidden hazards. The Cowlitz Tribe decided not to move forward with purchasing the Tri-Mountain Golf Course in Ridgefield, Wash. While no clear explanation was given, the county's requirement that the course continue to operate as a public facility may have been a contributing factor. Lastly, Donald P. Emery, CCM, CCE, General Manager/COO at Grey Oaks Country Club in Naples, Fla., initiated the Emery Family Fund with a desire to make a difference in the club industry and encourage others to contribute to support all those who benefit from The Club Foundation's work.

Up until today this news segment hasn't been available to the public … possibly since 1993 when it last aired in the Florence and Myrtle Beach areas. Today, we dive in deep on previously unknown information about alleged sex predator Wayne Miller and the cover-up that he and his colleagues appeared to take part in. Also on the show, Horry County Police Department reopens its (pathetic) investigation into the 2023 shooting death of North Carolina man Scott Spivey. On Wednesday — just one day after the resignation of Horry County assistant police chief Brandon Strickland — Horry County announced that there were unresolved questions in the closed case and it was being referred to the FBI. What's weird is that Strickland appears to have been friends with at one of the shooters, North Myrtle Beach restaurant owner Weldon Boyd. And what's even more strange is the case already underwent a review by SLED and South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson's office. Send us a textIn this episode we look back at a triumphant week for President Donald Trump as he held a pre Inaugural press conference on the transition and his plans for a second Trump term. In this episode we will listen in on all the various themes and issues he touched on in his hour and 20 minute press conference and then delve into the historic legal proceeding in New York State. In our opinion, that action by the New York State Court was exactly the type of overreach that we hope the President will remember as he takes office on January 20th. Our podcast, has dove in deeply into our examples of how lawfare has created a rift on our national body politic for over a half century and how desperately we believe this evil needs to be stopped. History, fate,  or circumstance, has given Donald Trump an unparalleled opportunity to destroy this evil political ploy that no one in our history has ever been handed. The use of lawfare destroyed the Presidency of Richard Nixon, helped end the career of George H. W. Bush, crippled the remainder of the Presidency of Bill Clinton, and while Senator Ted Stevens would be eventually totally exonerated that all occurred when he wasn't a Senator any more. Donald Trump has been afforded the opportunity to right this wrong after being its victim for the entire time he was out of office between January of 2020 and literally, last week. This episode is also dedicated to President Donald Trump's biggest fan here in Horry County, a woman instrumental in his success in our State of South Carolina. Gerri McDaniel was a force of nature who exploded onto the local political scene almost 18 years ago as a leader in the Tea Party movement, she would go on to help engineer Newt Gingrich's victory in South Carolina's Primary in 2012, and was the early leader here for President Donald Trump throughout his time in politics. She passed away suddenly this week and we thought it only fitting she share in this moment of triumph for President Trump. The worst thing imaginable happened to Bob Arnold and his wife Jeanne in 2002. They were getting ready for bed and a coroner calls. Their 23-year-old daughter Marcie was found dead in her apartment nearly 500 miles away. Marcie, a vibrant young woman who was just getting established in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., was talking with a friend on the phone when the conversation went silent. She had suffered QT prolongation, sudden death from cardiac arrest, a rare occurrence that afflicts people with arrythmia, or irregular heartbeat. It is a tragedy that no parent should have to endure. But rather than get angry or go into denial, Bob and Jeanne chose another route to confront their suffering. "I knew one thing that had to happen in order to do that ... is to really be honest about what's going on," Bob said. "Trying to think of all the ways to try to rationalize this or deal with this, I knew none of those were reality." Bob started journaling. In the first three years after Marcie's death, he wrote 1,300 pages to help him "sort through the depths of despair" he was feeling. Those reflections turned into a book authored by Bob and Jeanne called When the Circle is Broken: Our Journey Through Deep Sorrow and Surprising Joy in the Loss of Our Daughter. The suffering also led Bob to ministry. The Arnolds now have a 70-acre farm in Western Maryland named Marcie's Meadow, which serves the ministry. They help people who are facing illness, death, divorce, or family difficulties find the joyous hand of God in their sorrow. "God doesn't take away the pain, but the pain continually became a healing agent," he said. "It (keeps) shaping and reforming and reforming, and in the process, we meet this compassionate and caring God." Bob's spirituality is evident in this week's episode of Chiseled. He tells a profound story of sorrow and joy and shares a path to healing that we can all follow.  Bob's ministry is available to anyone who needs a lift. He can be reached at his email or phone number, which he shares at the end of the episode. Meanwhile, you can check out his ministry at his website, meadow4.org.

S4, June 29th, 2024 During the summer the Carolina Outdoors loves a visit from self-described beach bum & inventor & founder of the famed Hammerhead, Pile-Driving, sun umbrella holder, Mike's Spikes, Mike Haney.  Host of the Carolina Outdoors, Bill Bartee visits with Haney this week with a summertime Ocean Drive, SC, beach report (It's HOT!) & about the invention & it's impact on safety for beach goers.Show Highlights: Ocean Drive in North Myrtle Beach, SC is one of the most popular areas along the Grand Strand. The Mike's Spike is a pile-driving design that secures your sun umbrella holder into the sand. Several coastal communities (North Myrtle & Myrtle Beach cities, being two of them) restrict tents & wind shade providers due to lack of room The restrictions during the heart of the warm weather months when the crowds are at the largest has provided Mike's Spikes a great niche. Thankfully the rip currents affecting NC and FL haven't been prevalent in SC Mike's Spikes, a specialized beach umbrella anchor, is a solution designed to secure beach umbrellas and prevent them from being blown away by the wind. Invented by Mike Haney, this product has become a staple for beachgoers, ensuring their umbrellas stay firmly planted in the sand. Design and Features Mike's Spikes is designed to be user-friendly and efficient. The anchor consists of a carbon steel spike with a powder-coated finish, which makes it durable and resistant to rust and corrosion. The device is equipped with a two-pound drive-weight that helps in securing it into the sand with minimal effort. One of the standout features is its large nylon wing screw, which ensures that the umbrella stays in place once installed. The dimensions of Mike's Spikes are 27 inches in length and 3-3/8 inches in diameter, weighing approximately four pounds  (Jesse Brown's Outdoors). Installation One of the key selling points of Mike's Spikes is its ease of installation. Users can set up their umbrella in less than 60 seconds, thanks to the pile-drive mechanism. This feature not only makes it convenient but also safe, as it significantly reduces the chances of umbrellas becoming airborne and potentially causing injuries. The stabilizing fins provide an extra level of security, ensuring the anchor remains firm in various types of sand (Jesse Brown's Outdoors). Multifunctionality While primarily designed for beach umbrellas, Mike's Spikes also doubles as an anchor for surf fishing rods. The top of the spike has a notch that can securely hold medium-sized fishing rods up to 1-1/2 inches in diameter, making it a versatile tool for beach activities. This multifunctionality adds to the product's appeal, making it a useful addition to any beachgoer's gear (Jesse Brown's Outdoors). Availability and Community Impact Mike's Spikes is available for purchase at various outdoor and beach gear retailers, including Jesse Brown's Outdoors. The product has garnered positive reviews from users who appreciate its reliability and ease of use. Mike Haney, the inventor, has been a long-time customer of Jesse Brown's and has contributed to the Carolina Outdoors radio program, sharing beach reports and personal stories. His involvement with the community and dedication to improving beach safety has made Mike's Spikes a trusted name among beach enthusiasts (Jesse Brown's Outdoors). Safety and Environmental Considerations In response to concerns about beach safety and environmental impact, many beaches have banned tents and canopies due to issues with discarded items and unsecured structures. Mike's Spikes addresses these concerns by providing a secure method to anchor umbrellas, thereby reducing the risk of accidents and environmental hazards. This has made it a preferred choice for many beachgoers who prioritize safety and environmental responsibility (Jesse Brown's Outdoors). In summary, Mike's Spikes is a reliable, easy-to-use beach umbrella anchor that has gain...

Segment 2, July 15th, 2023 Mike Haney gives us a beach update from Ocean Drive in North Myrtle Beach, SC.  This is one of the most popular areas along the Grand Strand.  Much of the music, culture, dancing, & resorts that had such a hay day along Myrtle Beach's boardwalk community moved northward after the Pavilion & Boardwalk were developed. This is also where builder turned inventor, Mike Haney, moved.  He's a self-described beach bum that enjoys the coastal life.  So much so, that he had one of the biggest beach inventions in the last twenty years:  The Hammerhead Mike's Spike. The Mike's Spike is a pile-driving design that secures your sun umbrella holder into the sand.  Why has this invention been so meaningful?  Several coastal communities (North Myrtle & Myrtle Beach cities, being two of them) restrict tents & wind shade providers due to lack of room, people leaving tents on the beach, & safety reasons (namely debris flying in the wind). The restrictions during the heart of the warm weather months when the crowds are at the largest has provided Mike's Spikes a great niche. It goes easily into the sand within seconds & secures your umbrella so that you can enjoy the sand, water, & sun securely. The host of the Carolina Outdoors demonstrated on-air the tamp style of Mike's Spikes. Plus, a bit of the beach is on-hand at Charlotte's beach store, Jesse Brown's.  We have a sand display with Mike's Spikes inside it.  We're glad to demonstrate the product so that you are ready to use it as soon as you arrive at your beach destination.

In this episode , we look back at John Jenrette's fateful decision to run for the South Carolina State House. He was living in North Myrtle Beach and struggling as a Lawyer. In that day lawyers could not advertise and John Jenrette was trying to figure out a way to get his name out to the public. He was, he said, tired of getting paid in collard greens. It was a decision that would change his life forever. He won. That lifted him to position of Chairman of the Horry County State House delegation. He was 28 years old and the system of that day was entirely different than what we have in the state today. There were no County Councils and the state senators ran the county. In that respect, John Jenrette was sitting in a really good position, he was young, energetic, and the cousin of the sitting State Senator in Horry County, James Stevens. It was a relationship that would pay dividends. In this episode, we will hear about how under Jenrette's leadership, along with Senator James Stevens, they went to work to build roads, bridges, and develop a fledgling school, then known as Coastal Carolina Community College. It was quite the ride for a young man in a hurry.  It was this extraordinary run in the State Legislature that would be the foundation for his later runs for Congress against an entrenched , powerful incumbent. Then we learn about the distant family tie between John Jenrette, a man of  French Huguenot descent, and the leader of  another nation on the North American Continent , Pierre Trudeau , the Prime Minister of Canada.  Jenrette enjoys talking about his family and their long history in America and the Carolinas. We will also be introduced to one of John Jenrette's closest friends and a legendary political ally whose career was as large as any in modern South Carolina history, Senator Dick Elliott of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.  We will look back at their friendship, its importance in the rise of John Jenrette, and Dick Elliot's own outsized career both in politics,  in business, and its  impact on our State of South Carolina and through out the Pee Dee region. Dick Elliott was as responsible for the rise of the Grand Strand in the Golf business, the tourism business, the improved road system, and the growth in Real Estate as anyone in the state, for he was a leader in every one of those industries as well as politics for nearly a half century.  In this episode we look back as John Jenrette lays the groundwork for one of the great upsets in the history of South Carolina politics against Representative John McMillan, who had served 16 terms in Congress. That will be the next story we will tell.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

It's no secret that the Inflation Reduction Act is going to make an impact on our country's sustainability efforts. But just how much of an impact will depend on several variables. One of which is how many consumers will take advantage of the tax incentives offered by the legislation. Mike Switzer interviews Jared Crawford, a certified financial planner in North Myrtle Beach, SC.
