Visit our Substack for bonus content and more: https://designbetterpodcast.com/p/jordan-mechner As a kid in the 80's, Eli fell in love with games on computers like the Apple II, Commodore 64, and later the Amiga and Macintosh. One of the very first games he played was called Karateka, which was inspiring for the realistic movements of its digital karate antagonists, even on a black-and-green Apple II monitor. Our guest today, Jordan Mechner, created Karateka while an undergrad at Yale University in 1984, and it went on to be a commercial success. He followed it up with the game Prince of Persia (you'll hear a clip from the soundtrack in the introduction, which Jordan's father composed and which Jordan invented a way to transpose onto the Apple II's tinny speakers before game soundtracks were widespread on the machine). Jordan documented the creation of the game in a wonderful published version of his diaries called The Making of Prince of Persia, and we spoke with him about how he taught himself the skills to build successful video games in a pre-internet era, why he journaled about his work process (and what it taught him), and about his new graphic novel Replay, a memoir recounting his own family story of war, exile and new beginnings. Book & links mentioned Journals: Steven Soderbergh, Michael Palin, Brian Eno Hobonichi Techo John August The World of Yesterday, Stefan Zweig Bio Jordan Mechner is an American author, game designer, comic book artist, and screenwriter, best known for creating the iconic video game Prince of Persia in 1989. He relaunched the series with Ubisoft in 2003 and wrote the original screenplay for the film adaptation produced by Disney in 2010, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. This work is considered a timeless classic and has spawned a global transmedia franchise, with over 20 million games sold to date. Since 2017, Jordan has been living in France, where he made his debut as a full author with his autobiographical graphic novel Replay. Among the albums he has written are Monte-Cristo (with Mario Alberti), Liberté! (with Étienne Le Roux and Loïc Chevallier), and Templiers (with LeUyen Pham and Alex Puvilland), which appeared on the New York Times bestsellers list. His latest works were first published in French, with English editions following in 2024. Jordan's video games, such as Karateka (1984) and The Last Express (1997), are recognized for their cinematic storytelling and innovative use of rotoscoping. In 2017, he received the Pioneer Award from the International Game Developers Association. Jordan also wrote and directed Chavez Ravine: A Los Angeles Story, an award-winning documentary broadcast on PBS. He has published his development journals, The Making of Karateka and The Making of Prince of Persia, as well as an adaptation of the Persian tales Samak the Ayyar. A passionate artist, he keeps a sketchbook journal, regularly sharing his thoughts and drawings, a testament to his love for art and storytelling. *** Premium Episodes on Design Better This is a premium episode on Design Better. Send us a textWhat happens when a big-budget blockbuster has all the right ingredients but still fails to fully satisfy? That's the puzzle at the heart of our deep dive into 2010's Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, a film that cost hundreds of millions to make but couldn't capture the magic of its video game source material. The conversation kicks off with an examination of Jake Gyllenhaal's bewildering accent and lack of charisma as the titular prince – a critical misstep that creates a void at the center of this action-adventure. "It's the worst accent of any leading man in a movie," we conclude, comparing his performance unfavorably to the natural charm of Brendan Fraser in The Mummy or the cast of Pirates of the Caribbean. The film's salvation arrives about 40 minutes in with Alfred Molina's scene-stealing performance as a tax-evading ostrich racer. His character breathes life into a previously lifeless movie, demonstrating exactly what was missing from the start: humor, heart, and genuine entertainment value. We discuss how supporting characters often make or break these big adventure films, and how Prince of Persia failed to understand this crucial dynamic. We also break down the disappointing direction choices that plague the action sequences – the choppy editing and shaky camerawork that obscure rather than showcase the parkour stunts that made the video games so special. For a franchise known for fluid movement and graceful acrobatics, the film's inability to properly capture these elements represents a fundamental misunderstanding of its appeal.Join us for this entertaining analysis of blockbuster filmmaking gone awry, and why some adventure films become beloved classics while others remain forgotten curiosities. And don't forget to tune in next week for our take on "The Gorge" starring Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy!Written lovingly by AIBe our friend!Dan: @shakybaconTony: @tonydczechAnd follow the podcast on IG: @hatewatchingDAT
Sehr beeindruckend! Jordan Mechner is an American author, game designer, graphic novelist and screenwriter. While a student at Yale University he designed and programmed the martial arts game Karateka. To create the animations in the game he pioneered a rotoscoping process to capture Super 8 film footage of his friends and family members. My guest further developed this technique for his next game. Prince of Persia became a best-seller, then a series, then, in 2010, a film produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, and Ben Kingsley, for which my guest also wrote the screenplay. In 2017, he moved to Montpellier, France where he has authored several graphic novels, including, most recently, an autobiographical work titled, Replay: Memoir of an Uprooted Family. Be attitude for gains. https://plus.acast.com/s/my-perfect-console. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

If a AAA game studio is closed, was it ever a AAA studio? Netflix closed their AAA game studio before even announcing a project. The US Copyright Office declined a DMCA exception for Video Game Libraries looking to help researchers access their materials online. A Larian Studios executive made comments about Ubisoft's drive to be more subscription only after the new Prince of Persia was declared not profitable and the team disbanded. We start the show talking about Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Word has traveled around the gaming universe that the team behind this game has been split up and put on other projects. Why didn't this game sell more copies? Is it really the fault of the developers? Or bad publishing decisions by executives at Ubisoft that cause their games to miss the mark time and time again? We discuss this and much more in gaming news on a Halloween week edition of the longest running video game podcast, Orange Lounge Radio! Also in the News: * Beyond Good & Evil 2 Still in Development * Nintendo Mystery Project Revealed to be an MMO of Sorts * BAD Decision by the US Copyright Office * Vampire Survivors Castlevania DLC All this and more on the show where EVERY gamer has a voice-- Orange Lounge Radio! Brace yourselves for a shocking revelation: Ubisoft is in serious trouble again. Or still... or, maybe, both. This week, Zak and Aaron sit down to discuss the newest plan to wrest control of the storied French studio/publisher away from the Guillemot family — this time at the hands of activist-investor group AJ Investments — and what that all-too-possible future may look like. They also discuss Ubisoft's many failures, a few of its more telling strategy shifts, and just how we got here in the first place. Please, enjoy.Listen to Beach Girl on SpotifyCheck out edouggieart on EtsyCheck out even more edouggieart on Instagram

Patreon.com/RememberTheGame The PlayStation 2 has one of the most stacked libraries in gaming history. So when Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time beat out a bunch of games to win the PS2 Patreon Poll, I was intrigued. And after playing the game, I totally get it. Sands of Time is awesome. I love these puzzle platforming-esque games, and you can see the DNA of so many gems from today in Sands of Time. The controls can be a little irritating at times, but the action, that dope rewind function, some humorous voice acting and the reasonably tight combat kept me invested for me entire 10-ish hour playthrough. My buddy Daniel played this one back when it came out. I finished it about 5 hours before we recorded. But 2 decades doesn't change the fact that a good game is a good game. And Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a good fucking game. And before we play with sand, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if I'm getting more concerned about game preservation as online stores on classic consoles start shutting down. Who are my video game crushes? And is "any" publicity for a game actually "good" publicity? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 of my favourite PS2 games: God of War, Twisted Metal: Black, and Bully. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Prince of Persia is back — again! For the second time this year, Ubisoft has released a new Prince of Persia game that shifts the series to a new genre. Rogue Prince of Persia is, as the name suggests, a roguelike. Built by the team that steered Dead Cells through its later updates, Rogue Prince of Persia builds on that game's formula in clever ways. But! In a market full of killer games in this genre, where does this new one stand? Get the full list of games (and other stuff) discussed at www.besties.fan. Want more episodes? It's time for move bad movies that did badly at the box office video game edition! This week, 2010's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time starring one Jacob Gyllenhaal as the titular Prince Dastan. It basically boiled down to this being Disney's attempt at another Pirates of the Caribbean but instead of turning out like Pirates of the Caribbean it turned out like that bad Pirates of the Caribbean.
